3.5 stars and I refuse to round it up because I hate how much I am enjoying this book of awful people and yet, like a car wreck, I cannot turn away.

Kazuya makes a drunken ass of himself over Mami, but the drinking party ends up getting together on a beach trip, sans Chizuru, who is off the clock, but if you think that they won’t all get thrown together... c’mon...

So, the art in this book is perfect. It is not just art, it is ART. I have rarely enjoyed a book’s style like I do this one. It is thick and blocky yet soft and just right.

The fan service, I gotta say, is particularly well done - when Chizuru emerges at the beach it is a moment, full stop, and this book sells it for all it’s worth. And I have never cared about the Pocky game before, but here you can almost feel the heat emanating from the page (up to the point where Kazuya does one of the few things that didn’t make me want the beach to swallow him this volume).

And the sequence that ends this book? Just gorgeous - a beautiful bit of motion. Maybe buy a phone that isn’t made out of rock candy next time, Kazuya...

If this book has a point, it’s that Kazuya does have a decent guy inside him but it is buried under a ton of hormones and immaturity. The shocking knowledge that a college student could be a hormonal asshole (or worse) doesn’t make it much more fun to read.

Still, I think the book even realizes this, as we get a little backstory for Kazuya, but not before his best friend can call him out for thinking with his dick all the time. It’s a moment of catharsis this story needed.

Then there’s Mami, who I correctly pegged at the end of last volume. She is a snake in the same way that a bite from a black widow is mildly inconveniencing. As the audience, we are privy to how much she’s seething at Kazuya (apparently) doing better than her and it’s scary how good the story is at selling her disguising her actions as pining for lost love.

It’s a perfectly plausible reason for her to have any interest in him and the way she weaponizes her sex appeal is something else.

Poor Chizuru doesn’t get as much to do except look good and deal with things this volume, which is a bummer. It was cool to see that she has actual friends of her own, that’s a nice touch, but she is here for beach scenes and to have somebody the reader doesn’t actively dislike (she is too good for this book).

Make no mistake, even with all my complaints, I want the next volume of this series RIGHT NOW. It’s like a bag of Doritos - nothing about it is good for you and it has no nutrition whatsoever, but it’s impossible to put down.

Reread: 11/01/2025

I just remembered why I love this series so much. Its filled with so much tension as all of them go to the beach after that incident and you see Chizuru being uncomfortable and at the risk of reveals she has to pretend to be his GF again and you see the tension and all and its so well done like I said last time. Plus the whole deal with Mami-chan and her sinister goals and whats going on with Kazuya and what I love here is his friend Kibe and I love that character seeing a friend look out for his his best friend and seriously wow and that epic climax with Kazuya saving Chizuru OMG! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! That is like the high end point of the series for me for sure!!
________________________________________________________________
This was so good again omg!

Kazuya has to deal with the awkwardness of the dinner and we see Chizuru and him trying to make up and well the weird things happening wwith Mami and then there is the thing on the beach and how co-incidentally they meet up again and well the GF has to come out again and I love the chase of will his friends find out and how will he keep it hidden until he does something weirdly weird. Plus the real friendship of Kibe is shown here and I love it and it made me love his character and it shows you what a real friend is and its awesome to see it. And then the last ch. with what Kazuya and Chiziru do and the climax omg! <3

Its a lovely volume and will make you love these characters and the mangaka does an awesome job exploring the tensions and drama and the cute romance underneath! <3

Ah we all knew the main characters would eventually catch feelings.

So this picks up with Kazuya stumbling home with Nanami. That's right, his EX! And when she almost invites him over but then reveals a little bit about her true nature and how mean she can be to Chizuru, Kazuya flips out a bit and stands up for himself. But when he heads on vacation with friends his mindset is to get back with his ex...

This is a back and forth, how do I break up with my fake girlfriend, to get back with my old real girlfriend. Everyone's true colors begin to come out and the second half is actually pretty intense. The last few pages got me going "Oh shit" and excited to see where we go. I just with people can see how broken Nanami is and why she acts the way she is.

A 4 out of 5.

Where do I even begin?!?!?!?!
Mami is still the worst.... actually she got even more worse, which I was not happy about.... I really mean it! She better have some serious character development!
Kazuya is also the worst right now but not as bad, though I'm not a fan of how he is treating my girl Chizuru. Like come on man! Open your eyes!
I am really loving the story line and everything.... hopefully this series just keeps getting better; though I am a little worried because this series is so long, like how many things can actually happen that it needs to be this long!
Anyway! I'm very happy that I have Volume 3 because that cliff hanger was not cool! I am stressed!

Honestly this books graphics are really good but the story was dragging really slow up until the end where it picked up a good bit and then left you on a really bad cliffhanger.

Can't wait to read the next volume to see how that cliffhanger picks backup.

Three and a half stars, four for a romantic comedy.

We left our pathetic, drunk protagonist as his narcissistic, scheming ex-girlfriend was helping him stumble towards his home. She had recently learned that apparently the protagonist is dating a ten out of ten, which made the ex-girlfriend plan to break their relationship just so she can have the protagonist back to pining after her, even though this bitch doesn't actually want to date the guy, and pretty much considers him a pathetic loser. The protagonist confesses that looking at her thicc thighs made him horny, but when the ex-girlfriend starts dissing the guy's girlfriend (who is actually an escort, but nevermind that, as nobody else but the two protagonists know it) as if the girlfriend were a pretty face with a terrible personality, the protagonist goes serious and defends the escort. The ex-girlfriend is hurt that this guy, pathetic as he is, would defend his girlfriend over her. Facing a tense situation, the protagonist decides to just run away, a technique that he'll attempt at different points of this story.

In any case, the escort and the protagonist live door to door. This urge to defend the escort, whom he considers a nice person with a good head on her shoulders, is his first real step in his character development, which goes a bit further in this volume. Although she clearly doesn't want to get very involved with this foolish guy, when he admits what an idiot he's been recently and how difficult he's made things for her, she offers him to keep buying her time and attention if that's going to help him feel a little better. He states that he'll move towards figuring out if he has another chance with his shitty ex-girlfriend.

Shortly after, the protagonist is invited along with his two best pals and some college people to a beach in some other city. A beach episode on the second volume, huh? His ex-girlfriend is also onboard. The protagonist focuses on stealing glances of this girl's small tits in a bikini, as well as of her sand-spattered ass, which she keeps casually turning his way when bending over. In isolated moments we see how this girl is posting in some social media site (maybe a personal blog?) about her single-minded intention to break the relationship between the protagonist and the vastly hotter coprotagonist. This being an ecchi romantic comedy, turns out that the escort's college friends have also invited her to this very beach, and both protagonists face each other realizing that the might be very close to being outed as someone who hires escorts and as someone who is a escort respectively. The escort is wearing her regular clothes along with her glasses, which hide her identity in a Clark Kent sort of way.

Both protagonists argue in the bathroom of some shop. She demands of him to stay away from her during this trip to avoid putting suspicions in other people's minds. However, as they were formulating a plan, the guy's ex-girlfriend recognizes his voice. He gets out, but the girl knows that he was sharing the bathroom with someone, and the escort has no choice but to undress to her bikini and act like the guy's girlfriend. Whenever the ex-girlfriend faces this much hotter female, who now owns someone who briefly used to belong to the ex, the ex shrinks. Clearly her narcissistic frame of mind doesn't allow her to be second best. In any case, the escort insists to him that he needs to make an excuse as soon as possible to justify her leaving, because she needs to prevent anyone from learning about her chosen career.

Both groups gather on a table, and the mismatch between the protagonist and such a ten prompt everybody to pay extra attention to the couple and ask questions about how this unlikely pairing came to be. The protagonist, who should have already broken the situation up and left the escort alone, keeps making up lies about where they met, her family situation, etc. With her getting increasingly uncomfortable at the attention, he just bails from the situation and goes for a swim. However, he's ashamed of himself: although the escort is a good girl, he keeps hurting her because he can't stand up for himself and do what he needs to. The guy's ex pretends that she's lost some bracelet, and when he goes over to help her look for it, she kisses him in the mouth, which leaves him mostly confused and horny.

When both come back to the table, the escort looks as if she's getting sick. Shortly after he announces that they had decided to break up. His resolve impresses the escort, and when she notices his shaking hands, she takes pity on him. However, the guy's best friend, whom he's known from childhood, punches the protagonist in the mouth. They exchange punches for a bit. The friend, who seems the most decent guy on this cast, yells at him that he had misjudged him, that he didn't took him for such a calculating scumbag: he had noticed him stealing glances at his ex, and given that they believe the escort to be his girlfriend, the fact that he would sacrifice someone so good for a fling with this ex sickens him. The protagonist, crying, defends himself that they had no idea how much getting dumped hurt him, and that he never stopped wanting the ex. His friends are horrified at the protagonist saying such things in front of his fake girlfriend, who is standing there feeling increasingly sick.

In the end she takes the opportunity to leave and prevent her college friends from finding about her real life. However, as the protagonist was wandering off feeling like the biggest piece of shit, she intercepts him. He apologizes for having caused so much trouble for her. She states, however, that she was impressed by how he managed to close that chapter of their relationship in front of his friends even though it was killing him inside; she suggests that he has some manliness in him after all. He says that he'll use his newfound courage to pursue his ex-girlfriend, and that therefore he'll have no further use of the escort. He walks away saddened.

As the escort was preparing to change back into her Clark Kent persona and rejoin her college friends, the protagonist's childhood friend forces her into a conversation. He tells her that although the protagonist is an idiot, and that he keeps causing trouble for others, and believes that everything will turn out alright although he's constantly relying on others to do most stuff for him, he's someone who'll pursue his dreams to the end of the Earth. He tells an anecdote of growing some flower in class, and him methodically watering what everybody believed to be weeds, but that turned out to be the most beautiful flower, or something. He wishes for her to give the protagonist a second chance. He's bought two tickets for a ferry so they can have a private moment. The protagonist, who was hiding in the bushes listening to this conversation while crying his eyes out, later tells the girl that she doesn't have to go along with it, but the escort, looking under the weather, says that she cannot refuse after the heartfelt speech the friend gave, but that this is the last time they are going to interact with each other.

They board the ferry. Almost immediately the escort begins to feel terribly dizzy. The guy keeps insisting on how he's grown a spine and he'll just pursue his ex from now on and leave the escort alone, but she asks him to please leave her alone for a bit. The protagonist, wandering away, receives a call from the ex, who demands to meet him right now in some pool, but at that moment, the escort, nauseous, approaches the veranda of the ferry only to end up falling overboard. The protagonist, not stopping to think for a second, drops his phone, which breaks on impact, and he jumps after the sinking escort. As the last panel of this volume we have him embracing the torso of the passed out girl in order to bring her back to the surface.

For a guy who started as an unredeemable loser who tended to flee from every uncomfortable situation, risking his life without thinking to save her life adds some coolness in his favor. At this point, however, the only reasonable good ending for me would be if he manages to become a proper man and date a good girl in his league thanks to the guidance and general kindness of this escort person.

Compelling series for an ecchi romantic comedy. Good conflict, sexy girls. Unfortunately for me, my enjoyment of this series is reduced because I can't identify with the protagonist's decisions nor how he tends to make trouble for the people who care for him to whatever extent.

I watched the anime and I found it really funny. I liked the art style, music, and character designs. I liked the art style in the manga too and I enjoyed the western comic inspired panelling. I only really connect with Mizuhara though and don’t rlly like the main character. But I’m going to keep reading it bc my bf bought me 1-12 lol <3

Kazuya makes a bunch of DUMB decisions this volume, and I really dislike that he has yet to see through Mami’s manipulations. I don’t know if I’ll continue with the series, to be honest.

Wow, this was a great volume!

I'm straight up impressed with Kibe, I thought he was just an asshole friend to Kazuya, but he really does care about him and wants him to do better. It was interesting learning about his friendship with Kazuya and him acknowledging that Kazuya can be awful, but he is a genuinely good guy. To me, I think the issue is that Kazuya is a good guy, just not when it comes to women. Don't misunderstand, I'm not saying he's a sexual predator or an abuser, but I think his ideas about dating are warped because he basing it off of society's views towards it and, let's be real here, society's views on dating regardless of culture are horribly screwed and contradictory. I won't go into a whole rant because I don't have the time, but I think most people will agree that dating culture is not a particularly healthy thing for someone so inexperienced with dating like Kazuya.

But back to Kibe, what I liked most about him was that he took action to help bring Kazuya back to reality and make him see how badly he's fucking his life up. Not only did he chew him out, he also called out Mami for leading him on when SHE'S the one who broke up with him. Not only that, he talked to Chizuru separately to try and mend things between her and Kazuya. He's a really decent guy and I'm glad that he's acting like a true bro to Kazuya rather than pick on him. But speaking of Mami...

HOLY FUCK, I HATE THIS CHARACTER! Not because she's poorly written, but because she's such a manipulating piece of shit. I'm sure we're going to get more backstory on her later down the line, but holy fuck, what is her problem?! She dated Kazuya for a month, broke up with him, blocked him on Twitter to shit talk him, then get's mad that he has a new girlfriend, and is actively trying to break them up DESPITE THE FACT THAT SHE DOESN'T WANT TO DATE HIM!!! I repeat, what is her fucking problem?! Ugh, she makes me so angry and I hope Kazuya sees the light and roasts her ass, cuz she fucking deserves it.

Finally, I actually like Kazuya despite what an ass he is. Like Kibe said, you can tell that he's a good person underneath all his crap, but his priorities are horribly misplaced and while he tries to do good, it just ends either blowing up in his face or making look like an even bigger asshole. But I want to see him grow and change and I think he has the potential to become a great person once he gets over his insecurities.

Long rant, I know, but I did really enjoy this volume and am really looking forward to continuing with the series. If you were on the fence with continuing after volume 1, I highly recommend giving this volume a try before deciding whether to drop the series or not. This has the potential to be a great series and I'm on definitely on board!

Mild spoilers ahead

This volume plays a key part in shifting this series from good to great. The beach arc was a great way to ratchet up tension and we also get a lot more character from Mami and Kibe (worst girl and best boy, respectively). So I said in my last review that Mami was a key reason that I wanted to re-read this series, because in general, I like her fans. All the other people that pick a "waifu", they can reasonably explain their pick with some pretty surface level stuff. If you want to like Mami for any reason other than just thinking she's the cutest, you have to diiiiig. And I may not like her, but I love an excuse to try and dig deeper into a series. Her twitter posts make those other arguments really hard to listen to, but I've loved looking for secondary motivations, alternative readings of her actions, and there have been some that make quite a lot of sense.

On the main character front though, I really like the dynamic between Kazuya and Chizuru in this one.

BIG SPOILER AHEAD for this chapter up to current: Reiji has already said that even though it hasn't happened yet, Kazuya and Chizuru will end up together. It's not really a shocker, the manga shies away from any harem vibes pretty early on, but it begs the question: when did Chizuru fall for Kazuya? Or at the very least, when did she start to? There's an arc around volume 17, that a lot of fans are pretty confident that she has fallen for him by. I would argue this volume is at the very least where she starts to. I think she gets really moved by Kibe's speech, and then when Kazuya says they'll basically be completely done after this trip, she gets sick. There've been a couple hints that she's having problems with the heat, but her posture suggests discomfort in her stomach. Like nausea. And, she's now in a shaded boat. I'm sure by the end of the manga we'll find out exactly when she fell, but for now that's a pretty compelling argument.

What appears to be Kazuya and Mami rekindling their love for each other turns into a rejection from his side. Very much like Chizuru's reaction to Mami badmouthing Kazuya, he rejects Mami when she badmouths Chizuru. The guy is still in love with Mami, but Chizuru is off limits for any criticism.

Next is a fun day at the beach. It's arguably less fun for our named characters. Kazuya is hopeful that Mami still has feelings for him. He wants to patch things up with her. Mami's jealousy is getting the best of her. Her goal is to break up Kazuya and Chizuru. Oh, if she only knew the truth. Chizuru is all business. She isn't allowed by her company to be wearing swim suits, so she only wants her money for services rendered during the previous date. She joins her college friends to the beach to unwind. Yeah, the same beach as Kazuya. All these coincidences are starting to get thin.

An excellent second volume! I found it far better paced than the first, and its ending has left me more interested in reading the third volume than the first made me for the second.

I found the character development interesting, and the characters themselves were more entertaining; it feels like real depth is now capable, whereas in the first volume it was painful at times how much comedy/comedic timing was being relied on, especially concerning the main character.

Even the secondary characters, where authors tend to fall at character development and begin to rely on singular traits, appear more interesting than at first glances from the first volume. I'm interested to see how they develop and how the structures of the relationships in the manga evolve and change in the next volumes.

The art is classic and clean; the line is particularly attractive, professional and works within the expected standards of the West as compared to some other manga currently on the market. Also makes a nice, easy-going introduction to readers wanting to explore manga for the first time (without wading into the daunting worlds of One Piece or Bleach) as definitely gives you an eye into most modern + some classical manga tropes within the romance genre, while introducing the reader to other, more widespread manga tropes.

If you too struggled with finding enthusiasm after the first volume, I encourage you to try the second - you really might surprise yourself!

Honestly, I wanted to like this more. But given that we pretty much see, thanks to this volume, that Mami is a bitchy ex who is manipulative and wants to break up Kazu and Mizuhara because,,, she hates seeing him happy or something and it's even questionable whether or not she actually wants him back or just wants to toy with him? I don't know, really, but the fact the author decided to do that with the ex-girlfriend in order to keep her around as an antagonist (and if my understanding of the fact this apparently turns into harem territory serves correctly, as a potential choice/endgame for Kazuya even) just is boring. It's disappointing and boring and it's been done a dozen times before. This volume isn't bad per se, and I liked seeing more of Kazuya and Mizuhara overall, but the fact that that's literally the role that Mami is being used for and kept around for? Boring. I can honestly say that I hate it. It'll be a miracle if I buy more volumes after this.

That ex gf... ooh she one nasty woman.

This tragic comedy of errors continues. Our lad goes with his friends to a beach resort... only to run into Chizaru, in her "college nerd" form, with her school friends... later they get caught together in a bathroom by none other than Blondie, who then tells everyone else, and everyone thinks they were getting down. Blondie then lures our lad to a secluded cove, and tries to make out with him. He's so confused. He wants Mami, but he's falling head over heels in love with Chizaru. Later, the pair take a cruise for two around the area, and Chizaru gets sick, passes out, and falls off the top of the boat into the ocean. Our lad, he's currently talking to Mami, who's trying to lure him to the secluded hotel pool. When everybody shouts, he turns to see Chizaru fall off the boat. He drops his phone with little-miss-can't-be-wrong still on the phone, & dives off the boat, to save the girl of his dreams!

This volume is basically the beach episode. All I have to say is that chizuhara doesnt deserve any of this she is the best character in the series besides Kibe who was being a real friend in this volume.
Kazakun is pathetic as always and idk what it was but in this volume it was even worse to have to read him treat chizuru like shit and mami chan in this volume just shows how manipulative she is.
Because I feel like the only reason she is interested in him is because he is dating chizuru now.
Luckily the ending made up for having to read all these pages of him being pathetic. Because the ending is pretty sweet what Kibe said about him to chizuru and then him saving chizuru from drowning finally shows him as a man. Not just a pathetic wimp.

so overal I would say it was like a 2.5/2.75 for me.

What made me want to go on reading this series was the fact that the main female character actually had depth and seemed to be sex positive. The tension of the guy not being able to handle fake affection was what really interested me. But this volume had almost none of that... it was a series of situations where the main guy kept saying "oh no I hope I don't get caught looking at boobs". Like the big cliffhanger is that his ex is in a pool in a bikini and he wants to go look at her boobs. This one just crossed the line of pervy and shallow too quickly for me to remain interested.
This has been "Max tries to get into manga" part something.

I don’t hate this series, I just don’t like several of the people in it. However, like the sucker I am, I got sucked into continuing at the end of this volume just like I did the first one. Originally I was going to read one more volume then decide whether I was going to continue reading. But that ending!!!!! Now I just have to keep reading on in the series.

This is one of those series where the drama is so good, it's a steaming hot cup of tea. Kazuya is so dumb but I understand his struggle so you still route for him despite his decision making not being the best, and finding out that his pined after Ex isn't exactly the angel he makes her out to be. Everyone in this series is human, which I think is what keeps me coming back for more.

This romantic story is coming along nicely. Rent-A-Girlfriend is not the type of manga I usually read, but I am really enjoying my time with it and am glad I got the first six volumes together on sale :)

This volume's conclusion is epic and unexpected. I won't spoil it for you, but let's say that Kazuya finally reveals who it is that he really cares about ;)
