DREAM HOU$E follows two Latinx sisters on an HGTV-style show who are selling their family home, hoping to capitalize on the gentrification in their changing neighborhood. As they perform for the camera the show starts to slip into the surreal: one sister grapples with turmoil in the family's ancestral past and the other learns how much she's willing to sacrifice for the family's future. A play exploring the cultural cost of progress in America.
As with every script, I think I'd rather see the play. However, in my imagination, this is a powerful piece of work. Messages about values and priorities and family and community are deeply moving.
I read this play because I was sent an audition for a production of it for the role of Julia. I am so grateful this audition was sent because now I know this beautiful play and it is the epitome of the kind of acting work I would like to do as a mixed Latina actor. I think we don't get to see characters like me on stage as often, especially characters that are Latina, but not as connected to their culture, just like I am. As someone who is always wanting to learn more about my culture and feel more connected to it, this character hit very close to home. It also struck a special chord in my heart that it was a story about sisters and family, as I come from a family with three daughters myself. I found this play to be extremely relatable and beautiful and even if I don't get a callback or cast in this production specifically, I would love to play Julia one day and this is definitely one I can come back to for monologues/scenes.
