An alpha who thirsts for blood discovers his greatest temptation yet: an omega who belongs to the enemy.
As a Bloodstrain wolf, Roman Redthorne is one of the most feared shifters in the surrounding territories, and for good reason. His family line has been closely guarded for generations, all with the intent of strengthening the rare trait that allows them to draw power from the blood of their enemies.
There’s only one rule a powerful alpha like Roman must obey: find an omega who’ll strengthen the line.
Jake certainly isn’t that, but when Roman is betrayed and left for dead by his own brother, the feisty omega who takes him home makes him question everything he thought he knew. Captive behind enemy lines, Roman will have to fight for his freedom. But what if freedom doesn’t mean what he always thought?
Captive Wolf is the first book in the Wildcrest Pack series. This is a standalone Mpreg romance with a cold-as-ice alpha and the fiery omega who makes him melt, a loving pack of close-knit shifters, and a guaranteed HEA.

Ooo pretty darn close to perfection as a shifter story in my eyes.
I loved the premise of forbidden love between wolves of packs at war. I loved this world where not all wolf-shifters are created the same. I loved the idea of Bloodstrain wolves. Wolves that feel no emotion. Have no understanding of imprinting or 'fated mates'. Wolves bred for war and blood. A militarized pack. Roman comes from that world and finds himself confused when he begins to feel drawn to the enemy omega, Jake. When he begins to feel this odd thing called emotion.
"He was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen, and I was fucking terrified of him. I wasn’t meant for beautiful things. I was meant for war, and the only thing that belonged in my grasp was a blade, not something soft and fragile and full of life. I was going to break him. God, I was going to break him and I didn’t want to, but I couldn’t tear myself away. I couldn’t let him go."
Jake is a fierce and adventurous omega. He's always hoped to find his fated mate. That's until fate gives him more than he can bite. Finding himself drawn to the Alpha of a pack they were at war with. Unable to stay away. Unable to deny himself. In love with a wolf he can't have a future with.
Oh what fun. This was truly very entertaining, and quite well written. Onwards to the next book. This is definitely a series I am looking forward to continuing. Highly recommend for those who love Shifter stories!!!
LC Davis is back with a new mpreg shifter series, and I cannot be more exited! The Mountain Shifters is one of my all-time favorite series, and I'm super excited to see what he will do with this new one.
I love stories that have interesting pack dynamics, history, and world building, and I thought that this story had a great setup in the different packs and the wars, alliances, and relationships between them all. Roman is a rare bloodstain wolf and has grown up knowing very few kindnesses in life. He believes he is unable to love, mate, imprint, or have anything more than a formal physical agreement with an omega of his father's choosing. However, when he meets Jake, an omega from a rival pack, everything changes.
I loved Roman and Jake together - I loved their bond, the pull between the two of them early on. And these two had some seriously great chemistry together! Fans of mpreg will be pleased to know there are all the components checked off - heat, knotting, nesting, scent, marking, etc. are all in this story.
This story really sets up future stories very nicely! There is now agreement and peace between the two packs, although I'm sure there will be more struggles as the pack continues to work together. This story also does a great job of introducing plenty of secondary characters that all deserve their own story - I, for one, am SUPER happy that we won't have to wait too long for Klaus and Declan's story!
I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.
I am not going to rate this one since my mood has part to do with me stopping here. I may continue another time.
Also I can only take so many chapters that start with ”A week had passed” or “A few weeks had passed” it just really dragged on for me and I lost interest and started skimming....
The description of this book had me intrigued to get to it right away. The opening was interesting as we get caught up with pack dynamics for both Roman and Jake, and Roman is betrayed by his brother. I was then expecting a good revenge story with a forbidden fated mates vibe added in, and while I did get some of that, the execution wasn’t all I was hoping for.
The storyline all had the same tone for me and it was largely flat once Roman is captured. The Bloodstain wolves that Roman is from do not feel emotion, so I felt it was more difficult to capture a romance when one of the pair doesn’t feel anything. There are mentions of Roman not understanding why Jake affects him so much and trying to understand what he is feeling, but overall, I didn’t feel the emotion of this relationship.
The time jumps ("a week passed" or two months later) got to be a bit annoying. I know a lot of time passes in the story, but it kept throwing me out of the story to figure out where in the timeline we'd now be (especially with Jake's pregnancy). (<---LOL, listening to a late night show review of the debates and originally wrote "presidency.")
LOVED Roman's character development, though.
Definitely interested in the next installment...and probably all the other characters that will have books coming.
well written and developed characters.... good storyline with a bit of uniqueness thrown into this.. it was fun.. it was action packed.. and it was interesting.. i really enjoyed it and cant wait for the next one.
LC Davis is my favorite mpreg author and books like this one, as well as the Lightbearer, prove why: the woman can write. The writing style, the editing, the depth of characters and detailed world building is way above what I've come to expect from the average mpreg book, even from the average romance book, period.
Here we have two shifters from enemy packs who are attracted to each other, a kind of Romeo and Juliet story, so it's not as fluffy as your usual mpreg romance. Jake was sweet enough to make his one-dimensional character more palatable (it's why I had to take half a star off), however I loved Roman with his imperfections and found his struggle to set his priorities right after meeting with Jake very realistic. I also loved the world building, the other characters of the Wildcrest pack with their obvious/secret passions, the dynamics between them and the fact that they indeed felt like a pack. I can't wait to read the rest of the stories!
I started this book and I immediately hated Roman and it was so weird for me because this is a shifter romance which is my comfort zone. I can read shifter romances no matter how shitty because I just love the tropes but for a second there I was scared I would have to DNF this book which would have been nothing short of horrific because this book was so so good.
Roman didn't start off as my favourite character but by the end of the book, he was the one I loved the most because he undergoes such a tremendous amount of growth in this story. He became an inspiration and it was really cool to live his transformation which while, subtle had a lot of impact. That scene in the end with him standing in front of his pack really showcased how far he had come and it was far indeed.
Jake was so easy to love. He was so persistent and stubborn and I loved how he just set his eyes on what he wanted and didn't allow anyone to stand in his way. It was amazing how tenacious he was because it endeared him to me.
Jake and Roman were somehow always perfect. Even in the beginning when I was still figuring out who these characters were, it was their interactions that sparked my interest in this story. Here were two shifters who couldn't be more different, who couldn't possibly want more different things but yet, they fit together in inexplicable ways and that story to finding out 'why' was equally as beautiful.
This story is a shifter romance but we get to see a whole new twist on the lore. There is a concept of 'Strains' wherein if the strain breeds true the progeny has certain abilities peculiar to the strain. It was an exciting concept and I liked how it was incorporated into the story. There was a whole array of pack dynamics that come into play because of this which made this whole world richer for it.
The Wildcrest Pack has some amazing people in it. We get Umber, who was really like Jake's big brother who was always there for Jake no matter what. When Jake is at his most confused he goes to Umber to clear his mind. Then there is Declan the pack alpha's mate who basically raised Jake and is always there for him despite his precarious position in the pack as Jason's mate. Klaus, who can always make you laugh. Ashton, who Jake can never lie to. Damien, the pack Sire, always looking out for his pack. Even Gabriel who is the silent and brooding type and who had all my attention and I'm really looking forward to his and Ashton's story because that will be EPIC. This pack was so amazing they personified togetherness and just knowing them made it easy to understand the fabric of Jake's memories.
I was in love with Jake and Roman but by the end of the book, I fell for Wildcrest Pack almost as much as Roman fell for them maybe even more. I was excited to dive into the next book as soon as I finished only to learn that I have three more days before book two gets published and I am eagerly waiting to pounce on it as soon as humanly possible.
The book started off great and then kind of lost the plot. I expected more as I enjoyed the authors previous work...but this followed along the predictable storyline in this trope. I didn't feel the chemistry between the Mcs and I probably won't be reading about declan and klaus. I wasn't invested in the romance and honestly Roman is supposed to be incredibly strong...we hear about the bloodstrain genes throughout the book..but he gets his ass kicked often by strainless wolves. Didnt see what the big deal was.
I just finished Bro and the Beast and was in the mood for the same comedic relief in a omegaverse universe when I checked this out - however, this is angsty! angsty af. My bad.
I enjoyed it to a certain extent but - there were a lot of characters (at the end there were still names popping up where I went who now?) - the overarching plot was tied up just a little too neatly - I did not feel the connection between the MCs at all and that although they're fated mates - the sex scenes got extremely repetitive - the time jumps were extremely odd
We could have had - more forbidden UST - blood play/connection - more mental connection stuff - more sad alpha - less repetition or shorter book - more nesting? (He makes a nest and then doesn't even give birth in it or cuddle with his newborn in it? :'))
Quotes
"No one's ever told you they loved you?" I asked in horrified surprise. "No. Not just that - no one has loved me. I'm a Bloodstrain wolf. We're not exactly... loveable." (p. 161)
NSFW infos: - Alpha with auburn hair and green eyes (age unclear) - Omega with soft brown hair, early twenties - Strict alpha/omega top/bottoming dynamic - knotting - sex through prison cell bars
This was by no means an easy read. It was bloody, gritty, steamy, angsty, and had very little lighter moments. What I enjoyed though was that it held a lot of believable resolution, one that wasn't all happiness and roses, but one that felt hard-won and completely right for the characters at the "end" of their journey. With a very Romeo and Juliet feel to the overall story it could have taken a few unfortunate turns along the way, but thankfully their crazy road was kept focused on the points of the plot that really mattered to them. Along with truly interesting side characters, this is shaping up to be a very good series.
There were quite a few things that weren't awesome, I will admit. Roman was more interesting to me as a character because he had so much in his life that needed to be opened, changed, and softened. He had the most growing to do...at least when we first meet him. He definitely has the most drastic changes necessary for a happy ending, but it's actually Jake that has the most growing up to do. His relatively sheltered life led him to a slightly naive world-view that makes progress between him and Roman stunted at times. It's clear that his immaturity is more of a stumbling block than Roman's seeming coldness.
My interest was piqued by quite a few things as we followed Jake and Roman's story. Shifter strains, bonding, fated mates and how they recognized one another, pack tensions, and omega gifts are chief among the draws to this new series. It was the end of Jake and Roman's story however, that really solidified my interest. There were a couple different and predictable solutions to the pack issues surrounding their mating and I'll admit to surprise that I was completely wrong on most counts. The way the resolution played out was perfect for the couple and had a whole lot more depth for not only them but for the packs' interplay and dynamic from here on out. I'll be very disappointed if the subsequent stories in the series fall short of the more surprising and satisfying ending we got here since I'll be expecting, at the very least, the same quality.
As Jake and Roman overcome the obstacles that appear insurmountable we're introduced to other characters, plot points for the overarching series, and bloodlines that are quite unique in the shifter and mpreg genres. I'm incredibly interested in learning more about the different strains, their significance, and how they all can work together as the series progresses. I think it's safe to say that I'm in for more.
Blurb = (Why do I include this? Because I don't think a book should be docked stars for being what it says it will be. Meaning, if I don't like stories about werewolves and I choose to read one, I shouldn't give it 2 stars JUST because I don't like those kinds of stories. Unless... it wasn't clear the type of story I would be reading.)
Ecellent blurb. Very clear. Even have info on what to expect in terms of upcoming books.
My Genre Scale = 5 star genre for me. I love weres, vampires and such. Though, I'm ambivalent about the sub genre of omegas.
Odds if not your genre = Depends. Omega aspect was done well if one finds that intriguing. The plot was interesting, but I'm not sure there is enough to elevate it if you don't typically care for these types of stories.
What stood out = The scene setting was good. I could really visualize where they were etc... Roman as a character and his bloodline too.
Mood Type: If you want a nice balance of story, relationship building / character growth, and sex scenes.
Warnings = None
Series Notes = First of what looks to be 5;set in the same universe, but can be read as a stand alone - with each one focusing on a different couple.
Rating Notes = Overall I feel it is a very balanced entertaining read for those that love this genre. I would have liked a little more development of the world and its mythology - especially about the different strains, the packs, and a few other things. It felt like the whole pack was just those in the house, yet they are fighting a war. Where is the rest of the pack, what do they do, how are they mustered, etc...? Except for the final battle, (where we are told Roman's family pack has crossed onto their lands), it was unclear on exactly where, when, how the war was waged. There were a handful of little things like that, where I could fill in the blanks, but it felt underdeveloped or slightly unclear. Not to the point of knocking me out of the story or effecting my engagement, but enough to give me pause which disrupted the flow a tad. It could legitimately be rounded up to 4 stars, but for me it didn't have anything that really pulled it up to 4 stars which for me means really good.
Factors: Since 2009, I have exclusively read m/m. My 1st was in 2007. I am a Kindle diehard, and I never do audio for m/m. . I read at least 100+ books a year - at an average length of 220± pages; but the total number of books is usually much, much, higher. My Goodreads lifetime rating (at the start of 2020) was a 3.72 average for 1390 books.
This fantastic Mpreg romance is an excellent start to a new series & I was completely enthralled from beginning to end. The plot is suspenseful, well-written & intriguing with a outstanding world building & scene descriptions. The well-developed characters are quite complex at times & have distinctive personalities, they are inclined to be confrontational at times while they go on a journey of discovery as they continue to develop throughout the story-line to ultimately complement each other. There is good support from the secondary characters. There is: a alpha bloodstain wolf (Roman) is betrayed by his cruel & deceitful brother (Sean) & left for dead but is found by a feisty omega (Jake) from an enemy pack, a conniving alpha (Jason), a hellhound (Gabriel), pack rivalry/war, political pack issues, wolf shifters, humans, hunters, twists & turns, suspense, drama, intrigue, deceit, betrayal, enemies, violence, conflict, danger, a honor debt, captured, imprinting, attractions, unexpected surprises, manipulations, confrontations, battles, injuries, death, meetings, decisions, alliances, love, happiness, some steamy scenes & a satisfying well-deserved conclusion for this couple with a interesting epilogue paving the way for the next book in this series.
🤨🤨🤨 was the vibe I carried for the majority of this book. Y’all... YALL—home boy had sex in a dungeon... through a jail CELL! 🤨🤨😵🤨🤨 say what now??? Like it had the potential to be strangely hot but the author went on tangents through the whole smut scene, like I couldn’t tell if they were still fucking or already done or imagining never fucking anyone else ever again, so confusing.
Roman. Alpha. Pack Alpha to-be. Our residential brooding hunk. Also, so forgettable. What was he supposed to look like again???
Jake. The omega who isn’t like an omega. 🙄🙄🙄 okay then prove it bitch. The author literally started the story off by Jake being caught on patrol by an enemy pack member, right AFTER he said something about being able to outrun and outsmart any wolf, alpha or not. Oh really? 🤔 Is that what that was?? YA HAD ME FOOOLED! He bugged me the most. He had so much leeway it was quite insane and soon became unrealistic: Jake protected an enemy wolf against his packs’ wishes? Forgivable. Jake snuck into the dungeon to see said enemy wolf? Forgivable. Jake was caught fucking said enemy in the dungeon? FORGIVABLE! And pls note that I was a QUARTER of the way into the book. QUARTER! Sorry but I decided not to stay for the shit that was about to be served.
DNF. Peace out.

I received this book by the author and this is my honest opinion. I love this authors work, the way it's written and the characters just absorb you into the page. I'm loving that this author is doing another series of shifter mpreg as I loved the mountain shifters one. This book had great world building to acquaint us with this world, sometimes harsh environment. Roman and jake I loved the dynamic between two rival packs and then forging a relationship despite obstacles. The chemistry heated nicely and we had humour, angst and all that good stuff. The mpreg was well detailed and I liked that you could feel their love from the page. This story is a beautiful start to I suspect another brilliant series and the author has plenty to work from from the abundance of great secondary characters from this one, can't wait
Soooooooooooo Once again, LC Davis has a good book, but its a little too wordy and drawn out for my taste. I liked the characters well enough, there was definitely some potential there for the characters to be amazing. The plot was the same way, very Romeo and Juliet. However the author never fully delved into anything. Lots of side characters and names got in the way of the actual plot and mains. There was a lot of first person POV which I enjoy, but Jake was in his head a lot and it made it extremely difficult to like Roman due to the fact that we never really got to know him. The romance felt rushed due to the weird cadence of the POV flipping and I never really recovered. The war time plot was interesting, but again, not much came of it/I wasn't ever invested. Just a meh book
It was unexpectedly great. I was searching for a A/B/O books since I read Nora Phoenix shifters series and these one met my expectatives completely!
There are lovables MC, a good plot, so much action and hot sex scenes.
The only thing that annoyed me was that every time Declan appeared, there is a comment about his phisique. It is told from the very beginning that he is a little fat and big, like a bear. And it is said EVERYTIME he appears. Ok, I get it. He is not thin or skinny but please can you just stop.
But despite of that details, I really like the story and I'm going for the second in the series!
I kept wanting to DNF this starting about halfway through, but I was just curious how it would turn out. There are a lot of things I just don't get about this. Like how the Wildcrest pack went from an alpha who let the omega's pick their mates to such a jackoff douchebag and how all the other wolves just....let him be a little bitch? The constant time jumps and "the war raged on" but like, what war? It was always just a vague allusion to something happening off page.
Around like 55% I just skimmed to see if they killed Jason yet, it was a little more enjoyable after that, the ending was good. Still not sure if I will continue with the series.

Great start to a new series. The world building was great, the characters were great and I love the MC’s. I love the confusion when they don’t understand what finding your mate means. And then the fighting it when it’s smacking them In the face. I loved their journey though I do wish R had a grater place in the end especially with where he came from. The writing was great. The smexy was hawt, and the side characters were amazing and I can’t wait to see them find their HEA.
At 60% and the MCs have not even had a full conversation with each other and They’re expecting a child.Roman has been betrayed by his brother, his dad has died he’s being forced to fight for another pack. Yet He never discusses anything with his mate. They don’t even talk about the fact that they have not yet bonded. I really had a lot of expectations from this author. I’m going to keep reading let’s hope for the best. 100% good plot premise but Didn’t like the storytelling.

I liked it, except it kind of petered out at around 60%. At that point, all he has left to do is kill his brother, right? But there was still 40% of the story left to go? How? There didn't seem to be enough plot left to sustain it. I'm really looking forward to Declan's story, though. I'm definitely going to read book 2.
I didn't think that the characters were fleshed out enough and I hated that it was instalove but I'm going to give the second book in the series a chance.
Summary: Roman is from a special bloodline if werewolf and he gets betrayed by his brother and left for dead. An omega wolf from the enemy pack finds Roman and they realize they're fated mates while Roman is imprisoned.
This is an mpreg that takes itself seriously, and I love it. The world that Roman grew up in was really interesting. Utilitarian, Roman-like in it's politics and social practices. It threw me off whenever things like cars were mentioned because this would actually fit in the past instead of the present/future.
I love this storyline! It’s different but LC Davis made it easy to follow. There is nothing meek about Omega Jake and that’s what makes him so lovable! Jake is just what Roman needs but doesn’t know it! I can’t wait to read more!
Loved this and finished it in one day! I usually shy away from shifter stories but this one hooked me:) it got a little repetitive in the middle but all in all it wasn’t too angsty and the couple was super sweet! Recommended if you like cinnamon rolls who charm emotionally stunted alphas:)
