Opus X #8

One Dark Future

Rate this book

Another planet closer to Earth than Erik's moon gives up its secrets, providing Erik and Jia with clues that could lead to the answer to one of the questions he has been searching for.

What was hidden on that small moon that his people were killed for?

Along with the clues, an unexpected question pops up.

Could an unfriendly but extinct species of alien not be extinct, as presumed?

Both want the truth—but is the effort to reveal the truth good for humanity?

Two years ago, a small moon in a far-off system was set to be the location of the first intergalactic war between humans and an alien race.

It didn't happen. However, something was found that many are willing to kill to keep a secret.

Now they have killed the wrong people.

How many will need to die to keep the truth hidden?

As many as is needed.

He will have vengeance, no matter the cost. She will dig for the truth, no matter how risky the truth is to reveal.

Audiobook: narrator, mixing, and backing tracks were excellent.

Story was what we come to expect save for a few nits.

And damn were there some scenes of action and loss.

Nits: we've known this whole series what inspired Blackwell to bed soon this path, he's grown a bit... Which means he doesn't need to constantly freaking repeat within 2-4 chapters that he's doing it for those he lost on that moon, especially with established characters who are aware.

Was going to rate it lower but the last quarter of the book really tiee everything together so well! The habit of having several separate stories in one book actually paid off pretty well in this one .

Looking forward to the next installment

Expect The Unexpected

Erik and Jia are getting closer and closer to admitting their true feelings for each other. Pesky missions always seem to get in the way. New powerful high tech toys are coming their way. All they have to do is keep delivering spectacular results. I like the action, humor, and romance. The Audible narration added a lot of ambiance to the read. I look forward to the next book.

Cops in spaaaaace.

Well, I guess technically they are not cops any more but I could not resist paraphrasing those old muppet show sketches. I quite liked the muppet show when they were in their heydays.

As you can probably guess Eric and Jia goes into space in this instalment. Really into space. Not just a tour to the moon or something. For some reason the book blurb of these books are pretty rubbish. More or less just a copy of the blurb for the first book repeated for every single instalment. So I am going to amend to the blurb by revealing (not really a spoiler so do not worry) that Eric and Jia get to make an encounter with a comet in their new FTL ship.

Not only are the comet not what it seems at first glance but there are other interested parties which is the main reason why Eric and Jia rush to their rendezvous.

I quite liked the story in this book. Apart from some nice action, including some space action, it really has some nice twists, plenty of mystery, lots of Eric and Jia and, did I mention?, action.

Eric and Jia are their usual themselves which translates into lots of bantering, snarky comments and ass-kicking.

The core story advances a bit but a lot also stays the same. That is, the secret conspiracy is still there in the shadows even if they got their asses kicked again and Eric and Jia are not really that much closer to finding them.

I would like something to come out of Eric and Jia’s encounter with the comet but sadly I think that part will fade into obscurity as just one sub-plot along the way.

Overall a good and very enjoyable book in the same style as the previous ones. I really liked that they finally got to break in their fancy ship including using all the stuff that goes boom on said ship.

Didn't see that coming....

I really love it when an author throws in a twist that you didn't see coming. The trouble with reading hundreds of books a year is that so many books while having a great story they often have a predictable progression - especially those of a series.
Michael has once again proven why he is my most read author, not are his tales original and entertaining, even after scores of titles, he can be unpredictable.

Horror beyond horror

Erik and Jia continue to enthrall. The story grabs you from page one and doesn't let go. The conspiracy deepens, but the duo are definitely getting closer. Can't wait for the next one.

Still enjoying this storyline. Really want to know how this turns out. Note: even though there is talk of aliens, there never seems to be any around. The bio-constructed things on the "comet" ,to me, don't count.

Good Reading

This book was a good read, it’s sort of brings out the best of what people can do in bad situations. It also shows the distance that a lot of men and women in the military will go in order to achieve an objective even though they see it is a dead end.

It lost my interest for most of the beginning, but the ending raised the bar for threats. Will be interesting seeing on where things lead from here on out.
