I don't even know where to start with 穆然 / Muted because stories like this genuinely break my rating system. Break it because despite having its flaws, this was a very perfect read for me; exactly the kind of danmei that scratches something deep and rotten in my brain. Give me pitiful shous who are devastatingly sincere when it comes to love, unbearably lonely, painfully insecure, easy to manipulate, easy to hurt, and so full of tenderness that they would rather destroy themselves than hurt the people they love, and I will immediately lose my mind! Add overwhelming dogblood, severe wife crematorium, psychological suffering, endless regret, obsessive yearning, and a gong who slowly goes insane after realizing too late what he lost? Yeah, expect me to be ON THE FLOOR BARKING!! This book was practically engineered in a laboratory for me!!!

I haven't stopped thinking about it since I finished it hours ago. Honestly, reading this felt like inhaling every chapter line by line without stopping. I was consuming this novel like a starving person. And the Chinese readers were absolutely right!! This is a classic angst dogblood danmei!!! Because this really does feel like one of the defining works of the genre, and I love it very much! It reminded me so much of 娘娘腔 / Sissy in the way it creates that same unbearable sinking feeling (which I have been looking for for months), that constant dread where you know the protagonist is going to suffer horribly, yet you can't look away because the emotional payoff is so addictive. The entire reading experience made me feel like screaming, crying, giggling like a big pervert, and rolling on the floor simultaneously.

The novel is actually emotionally sincere beneath all the nonstop melodrama. Yes, this novel is absurdly dogblood. Yes, the suffering is excessive. Yes, everyone desperately needs therapy and communication skills. But underneath all of that is a story about loneliness, inferiority, guilt, trauma, and learning how to love someone properly after already destroying them once. And honestly? I'm so easily sold, haha!

Mu Ran absolutely made this novel for me. He is one of the par with the most devastating shous I've ever met because his tragedy is so quiet. So quiet that his pain consumes him entirely. From the very beginning, Mu Ran fundamentally does not believe that he deserves love. His entire personality is shaped by inferiority and emotional deprivation. He is cautious, overly accommodating, painfully self-sacrificing, and constantly convinced that he is a burden to everyone around him. Even after Yi Tian changes, even after Yi Tian practically tears himself apart trying to prove his love, Mu Ran still cannot truly believe him because his self-worth has already been shattered beyond repair. And that's what makes every single one of his decisions hurt so badly. Mu Ran keeps leaving not because he doesn't love Yi Tian, but because he loves him too much. He was always trying to minimize his existence, always trying to make himself easier to abandon. Even during the wife chasing arc, he keeps convincing himself that Yi Tian is only acting out of guilt or responsibility because the idea that someone could genuinely love him wholeheartedly feels impossible to him. He's so pitiful, it's so delicious!

And Mu Ran's love is terrifying in how pure it is. This man committed one horrible mistake in his entire life because he fell in love for the first time and became desperate enough to grasp at something he thought he could never have. The novel didn't really excuse what he did, but it also asks a question: how much punishment does one mistake deserve? Because Mu Ran spends the rest of the story emotionally and physically destroying himself over that one act. Even after years of humiliation, abuse, illness, psychological collapse, and self-hatred, he still believes he somehow owes more suffering to the world. Deep down, Mu Ran truly believes that love is something he has to earn through endurance and pain.

And then there's Yi Tian, he's so pathetic and I respect him for that, hahahaha! He is very awful but not too awful, just perfectly enough to keep me craving with all his absurd behaviors. He wasn't secretly soft from the start. He was cruel, possessive, arrogant, emotionally immature, and genuinely terrifying at times. He humiliated Mu Ran, manipulated him, weaponized his insecurities, and treated him like something he could control whenever he pleased. The novel never pretends otherwise, and I actually appreciate that. Xu Ran (we love you big sister!!) especially refuses to romanticize his behavior and repeatedly forces him to confront the consequences of what he did.

But Yi Tian's wife chasing arc is genuinely DELICIOUS because once he realizes the depth of Mu Ran's suffering, he completely falls apart psychologically. The sheer insanity of this man becoming physically ill from longing, alcoholism, insomnia, stomach perforation, obsessive searching, emotional breakdowns, hallucinations, and complete emotional dependency was everything I wanted. Watching someone as proud and untouchable as Yi Tian slowly unravel because of love was unbelievably satisfying. This man really went from emotionally constipated rich asshole to: “Please don’t leave me.” And I ate up every second of it!

It's so entertaining to read how distorted their understanding of love initially is. In the beginning, love is treated as possession, obsession, punishment, dependency, and emotional control. Neither of them knows how to communicate honestly. Mu Ran expresses love through silent endurance while Yi Tian expresses attachment through control and cruelty. Their relationship is deeply unhealthy at first, and the novel knows it. But over time, love slowly transforms into something gentler. There's body worship here and I WAS LIVING FOR IT, omg it was so good. That evolution is what makes the romance so emotionally satisfying despite all the suffering. Yi Tian's greatest development isn't just realizing he loves Mu Ran, it's learning that love cannot exist without respect, patience, and gentleness. Meanwhile, Mu Ran's growth lies in slowly allowing himself to be loved without immediately viewing himself as a burden.

The first volume (22% of the book) especially blew me away. I loved how Mu Ran wasn't even directly named at first, almost as if his identity itself had already been erased by suffering. His catatonic state was written so vividly that I genuinely felt suffocated reading it. Every tiny reaction, every stolen kiss from Yi Tian, every desperate moment of waiting made me insane. I knew exactly what kind of story this was going to become, and instead of making it predictable, it somehow made the experience even more exciting because I was anticipating every emotional collapse in advance.

And despite all the pain, the eventual payoff felt completely deserved. The wife chasing arc was satisfying because Yi Tian truly suffered. He lost control of everything: his pride, his emotional stability, his health, even his position within the family. Watching him willingly sever ties with his family and give up power for Mu Ran felt like the ultimate narrative slap in the face to everyone who had underestimated or mistreated Mu Ran before. Honestly, I still wanted more people to apologize to him, but seeing Yi Tian—someone once so untouchable—become completely consumed by love and regret was satisfying enough for me.

I also loved the side characters so much, especially Xu Ran. She genuinely felt like the older sister Mu Ran desperately needed. I adored how fiercely protective she was of him and how she constantly forced Yi Tian to confront reality instead of letting him wallow in self-pity. She's really so important in the story because she refuses to romanticize the abuse. She's not letting guilt masquerade as redemption. She understood Mu Ran's pain while still demanding accountability from Yi Tian, and honestly, the story needed someone like her to keep the emotional narrative grounded. And I was so surprised and excited abou Su Wenyang (Yi Tian's secretary) secretly loving Mu Ran was also such a good detail because honestly? Of course people would love Mu Ran. He's the kind of person who quietly gives warmth to everyone around him without realizing how precious he is.

And the ending! The recurring theme of "home" throughout the novel really did me good. Mu Ran spent his whole life searching for warmth, safety, and belonging, while Yi Tian—despite all his wealth and power—was emotionally hollow and incapable of building genuine intimacy. In the end, they become each other's home. And they have two perfect children! Mu Jin and Yi Hang are so cute, Mu Ran is the only mother ever! It would've been more awesome if this was ABO, I bet Yi Tian will be more crazy because if he was me, I will impregnate Mu Ran! Hahaha!

Anyway, with all my rambling, I am really genuinely satisfied. I cried a lot honestly! Even at the last extra. Yi Tian was literally promising Mu Ran that he will not hesitate to end himself if Mu Ran dies. He had already proven that he could abandon wealth, family expectations, and lifelong status for Mu Ran, so the novel quietly makes you realize that his own life had also become something he considered disposable in comparison to losing him. That's so romantic to me! Like his life will be meaningless that moment Mu Ran leaves this world. It makes me feel settled, tbh. Mu Ran once wished that if there really is a god or an afterlife, he wished for a home. And he will have it! Yi Tian will never abandon him even in the afterlife! Aaaaa, I'm so corny, this is so corny, but I love this so much! I will miss them a lot!

Title: Muted
There are trigger warnings for this novel. If you are currently dealing with depression or are in a bad mental state, I suggest you skip this one.

This story isn't for everyone. I just happen to enjoy angsty novels, but even I had a hard time reading this; I was almost pulled into the same state of depression that the main character was experiencing.

Mu Ran is our MC, who made a massive mistake and felt an immense amount of guilt for it. He went through so much and sacrificed so much. He was completely alone and tried to find someone to fill the void, but that didn't last long. While he does eventually find happiness, he had to endure an overwhelming amount of pain before he could get there.

Yi Tian is our ML, and he isn't the kindest person. He is rich, proud, and couldn't accept Mu Ran for the longest time, often resorting to humiliating him. Over time, he began to grapple with his emotions—not quite understanding why he couldn't stop thinking about Mu Ran.

I know a lot of readers felt that Yi Tian should have groveled more, but considering the story is only two volumes long, I think it was well-written. We get to see Yi Tian yearning, learning about himself, working to become a better person, enduring his own physical pain, and missing Mu Ran to the point of breaking.

🎂Spoilers Ahead🎂

Mu Ran is an orphan who just wants to experience someone's warmth. He found that warmth, but went about it the wrong way: he drugged and blackmailed Yi Tian because he had fallen in love with him. Afterward, Mu Ran carried a mountain of guilt for what he did. In return, Yi Tian and his friends found endless ways to humiliate, mentally torture, and physically beat Mu Ran for Yi Tian's satisfaction.

Mu Ran spiraled into a deep depression after a person who had become his found family passed away. He attempted suicide multiple times, eventually becoming entirely emotionless, with empty eyes and a subconscious state where he did nothing but eat and sleep. Yi Tian took care of him throughout this initial healing process.

After a very long road to recovery following a car accident, Mu Ran finally left Yi Tian. He moved to a small town and adopted a homeless child. Meanwhile, Yi Tian couldn't stop thinking about him. After going through his own share of pain and suffering, Yi Tian eventually tracked Mu Ran down, apologized, and they later got back together.

“Simplemente no entiendo él.

After the english translation stopped at like chapter 25, I started reading the spanish translation which took some getting used to but overall, I liked it. It wasn't anything too new in the wife chasing crematorium genre and I thought the addition of the child wasn't necessary/add anything to the story besides making the MC look better.

Summary: Mu Ran met Yi Tian when Yi Tian saved him from getting bullied and fell in love with him instantly. He chased him and then drugged and blackmailed him so Yi Tian could be with him and Mu Ran thought that his love would eventually move him into responding to his feelings. The story starts three years later when Mu Ran gets home from a trip with gifts with Yi Tian only to hear Yi Tian having sex with some random man in his home. Mu Ran is an orphan and considers his ability to even have a home precious this is the last straw for him and he gives the blackmail photos to Yi Tian and says they should break up.

Me gustó mucho.
