Breaking the Plan

Rate this book
Oliver Stoneridge loves order and plans, especially when they’re laid out on a perfectly formatted spreadsheet. But when his girlfriend, Violet, dumps him, Oliver’s strategy for the future slips away. Desperate to win her back, he begs Taryn, his archenemy and Violet’s beauty queen roommate, for help. Taryn’s gorgeous, thinks he’s a nerd, and wouldn’t know a plan from a prom dress, but Oliver soon finds himself tangled in her web of sexy. Suddenly, Ollie’s falling for Taryn and losing track of everything he thought he wanted.

Taryn Markos knows that agreeing to help Ollie win back her best friend is a dumb idea. Not only because he’s all wrong for Violet but because the more time she spends with him, the more confused she gets. Who knew Nerdilicious himself could challenge her with a single look, even from underneath those unruly eyebrows in dire need of a tweeze? How could she have known that he would accept her and defend her when she needed it the most? Taryn’s hated Oliver for three years. Why does the sight of him now make her come alive?

As things heat up between the frenemies, sparks begin to fly. But Ollie and Taryn know their love-hate flirtationship has to stop—before someone ends up with a broken heart.

“But isn’t it possible to love two women? Two very different women for very different reasons?”

Much thanks to NetGalley and Jessica Calla for this complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and opinions are fully my own.

⚠ Read if: you are looking for a new NA romance author to love ❤

Now I have learned that you should never judge a book by its cover, because I almost did not go for this read. Jessica Calla is a new-to-me author but I am glad that I took the chance. Her writing is just the way I like it and I am happy.

BREAKING THE PLAN is about Oliver, who was recently dumped by his long term girlfriend, Violet. He is the type of guy who's cute, smart and has everything planned for in his life. When his plan got messed up and Violet flew to Vienna, Austria, he reached out to Vi's bestfriend, Taryn, to help him win Vi back.

Taryn is an often underappreciated girl. Her looks make people think it's all she can offer. She has always ignored Oliver but made a deal to help him win Violet back.

Theirs is a push-and-pull love story. As sparks fly between them, they are reminded of Violet and the original goal that they set. Will they take a chance? Will they have a fling or will they make it serious? Will they ignore the spark and just go on with their lives?

I know this is not for some people, but I loved the morally gray will-they-won't-they situation here. I loved how the author made their attraction and love feel. It was magnetic and electric, and it is really clear that they made each other better.

Obviously, I am #TeamOlivyn, and loved reading this book. I could not put it down, because I loved all the angst, the fluff and the hot scenes. Even the ending was too cute to handle!

Very excited to read the next 2 books of the series!

Well, this was quite a surprise, in the best way! This was a new to me author and I was a little nervous from the blurb. It’s definitely a forbidden romance, in that Taryn is Violet’s roommate and best friend, and Violet was dating Oliver. When Violet breaks up with Oliver, Taryn agrees to help him try to get her back. They have tolerated each other in the past, more enemies than friends. This made for great banter, and some serious sexual tension.

From the very beginning, I LOVED Oliver. He was funny, sweet, protective, nerdy, and loved a good plan. Oliver assumes Taryn is the exact opposite. She comes off as a party girl, pageant queen, and seems like she has no real plans for her future. But, she is not what she seemed. She was a positive, good person just trying to survive her life. I adored her. They were so great together, and I rooted for them the whole story!

Obviously, with this being a forbidden romance, some extra drama ensued toward the end. While this was necessary for the storyline, it did feel a little drawn out. But, then that ending, and epilogue were exactly what I hoped for! I really enjoyed this one, and I’m eagerly anticipating the next books in the series!

Jessica Calla is not a new author to me, since I loved her Sheridan Hall series. With this new one we're still in New Jersey, following the story of Ollie and Taryn.

Oliver is a nerd who is trying to stick to his plan, which consists in becoming a lawyer and marry his longtime girlfriend Violet. But when Violet breaks up with him and goes abroad for something related to her major, Oliver is heartbroken and can't accept that his future plans are basically ruined. Taryn is Violet's roomate. She's carefree and unlike Oliver, she doesn't know what to do with her life. Despite she and Oliver never got along, she decides to help him get his ex girl back, but her plan backfires. As Taryn gets to know Ollie, she'll realize he's not that bad as she thought and he'll do the same.

The relationship between Ollie and Taryn is weird, but in the good sense. They're different, yet they have some things in common. They start hanging out because she wants to help him get Violet back and wants him to help her write an important paper. They both dread to be around each other because they never agreed on anything, but when they see how they are comfortable when they are together - and they get each other out of their friend-zone - their perspective on what they are, which type of relationship is blooming between them, changes suddenly. Ollie realizes that Taryn isn't just a beautiful girl who likes to evade by going to parties, and Taryn sees that Ollie isn't just a nerd.

Ollie is adorable. He's not the usual alpha male we see in many romance novels. He's a nerd, he's been with just one woman in his life, because that was his plan. He is complicated because he has a logical mind and thinks before he acts, but he'll also surprise you and act impulsively and throwing his plans out of the window. Taryn may seem like the type of character who screws around, but we see she's not. She was labeled wrong by Ollie, and as he gets to know her, he realizes that she may be who he wants to be with.

I liked how their relationship was built slowly. They took their time to understand that they liked each other and to jump on each other. It didn't feel rushed and the timing was OK for this kind of story.

Just one thing. Since I'm Italian and Taryn says that she learned Italian by working in a place owned by Italians, I wanted to correct a sentence that appears around position 2207 (on my Kindle at least). It's when Taryn says: "sono così affamato che posso mangiare un cavallo". The sentence is not correct. The verbs and nouns in Italian agree with the genre of who is talking. Since Taryn is a woman, the verb "affamare" conjugated to 1° person, singular has to agree with her genre, so it has to end with an -A (that marks the feminine, singular) instead of an -O (that marks the masculine, singular). So, it has to be "affamatA". The verb in the subordinate sentence is also wrong. Is not "posso". It's true this sentence means right now, in this moment, but we don't use the present tense but the conditional, because it's a condition you're so hungry you could eat a horse. So the correct sentence would be: "Sono così affamata che POTREI mangiare un cavallo" or, "Sono così affamata che MI MANGEREI un cavallo" (still with conditional). Or, since it would fit the scene, she could also say "Sono così affamata che ti mangerei" = "I'm so hungry I would eat you"... Sorry about the correction, but since Italian is my mothertongue, I wanted to be of help by fixing this error.

Ok, that's it! If you love new adult and college romances like I do, you gotta read this. And if you haven't, go read the Sheridan Hall series too. I can't wait for the following book!

***I received an eARC for review from NetGalley. All thoughts are my own.***

Oliver is the man with the plan. He is going graduate college, get into Harvard Law, become a successful lawyer, and marry his 5 year girlfriend, Violet. This is how things are meant to be. Until Violet tells him she needs "space" and then promptly takes a six week college course in Italy.

Oliver feels lost and he is sent reeling by what he feels is his life crashing down on him. He has no one to turn to except for Taryn, Violets roommate and best friend. They have never got along with each other. They always fought for Violets attention and not in a fun way. But Oliver needs his plan to work, and Taryn might be his only chance to win Violet back.

So, there were a lot of fun aspects to this novel. Oliver was sweet and such a different kind of guy. He had body image issues and that was interesting to hear it from a man. He feels self conscious about how skinny he is compared to other guys and he has a slight drinking problem, which gets him into trouble sometimes.

Taryn is a beauty queen, excuse me, runner up beauty queen, and she loves life. She isn't worried about a plan. She just wants to finish college and get out of town. Violet is her best friend in the world, and she is so proud of her for dumping Oliver and trying out her freedom. But I also love that she is still compassionate to Oliver, and since they both love Violet, they are able to console each other in certain ways. She doesn't think Oliver can win Violet back, but she needs help with a paper, so why not give him some ideas.

Their chemistry is amazing, and it is believable that with Violet gone that they might notice that when they otherwise wouldn't have. They become really drawn to each other, and they have to put the breaks on a few different times.

I really enjoyed myself in this read, but the story falls apart a bit for me near the back 25%. They worked themselves into a corner that I did not feel comfortable in, and to me it made them both a bit too unlikeable. It suffers from the same issues so many romance novels do, but I am always looking for someone to break the mold. This one didn't quite do that.

3.5 rounded to a 4 for me. Enjoyable most of the way through and I am intrigued enough to read Josh's story next. He seemed like such a great guy, and I want more of him.

4.5 Nerdilicious stars!

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was from a new-to-me author so I tried not to have high expectations about it, even though the blurb hinted to one of my favorite tropes.
As soon as I started, I was hooked. I absolutely fell in love with Ollie and Tar and there sort of forbidden romance. The storyline was super addictive and I wanted to find out how things would play out for them. The writing was absolutely flawless which made the story flow naturally.
I loved everything about it, except the way the story ended. From the moment Vi came home, I started to get confused at the decisions they both made and how they dealt with the situation. I understood where the author was coming from, but I personally didn’t appreciate it which was why I couldn’t give it 5 stars.
Other than that, I can only say how much I loved it and I can’t recommend it enough.

I loved this enemies-to-lovers story of Ollie and Taryn who are so different but mesh together so well. So many fun twists and turns, Italian food and wine, reluctant beauty queens, math equations, and all the feels! Love this author, and this story is in keeping with her well-developed characters and her stomach-fluttering emotion. Highly recommended!

I swore I had read Jessica Calla before, I just couldn’t put my finger on the book. So I decided on reading this one, and then going back and finding the other one. In to the first two chapters, I knew I’d love this book. In to half of the book, I couldn’t put it down, I had a flight to catch, but book took preference; PRIORITIES!
We have this adorable hero, Oliver, who in the start seemed like a control freak and I felt that he kinda pushed his agenda on to others, specially his now ex girlfriend, Vi, but as you read further and further, you realize that that’s not the case, and this revelation is dawned upon both the readers and our heroine, Taryn, alike. There’s more to Oliver than meets the eye. He’s kind, he’s considerate, he’s a “fixer” and he’s there for the people who matter to him no matter what the circumstances. He’s also “the man of the plan”. One blip in the plan and his whole universe would come down, or so he thought.
Our heroine, Taryn, whom I really really liked (also reminded me of a heroine from another novel, later realized that that book was by the same incredible Jessica), left her mark. I’m mostly in to naive heroines who take the bull by its horns despite their lack of experience. They aren’t shy to speak their minds. Taryn wasn’t naive, but she still had doubts and still had a habit of running away from new challenges. All she needed was a push, so that she could follow her dreams (of traveling and staying warm ;)) and who else to give that much needed push than our plan master, Oliver.
When the two previously arch enemies make a deal that’d benefit them both, their insecurities, their strengths, their interests and their whole lives come to a new light, and surprisingly, when the one is down, the other is there to pick em up. So what started as a new friendship, turns in to much more.
The only problem is, Vi’s back in town, and the two souls who had challenged each other and made each other see themselves in a new light, are faced with a dilemma; should Oliver break the plan and should Taryn finally build one of her own based on her dreams, together or should they go back to being their old selves.
Seriously, this you gotta read cuz I might spoil the whole book here.
I promise you, you won’t be disappointed.
My only issue was a “very” few typos here and there. Rest, the book was a gem.
Go read it, whatcha doing still sitting here?

PS: the other book was “She Wants It All”.

I was given an ARC of this book for an honest, cross my heart, review. Thanks for trusting in me.
Love and hugs.

I really enjoyed this one and I was routing for Ollie and Taryn. As a reader you felt along with them, you could pick up on the tension that grew as they got to know each other. They were great together and Taryn made Oliver think and not just go along with a plan for the sake of ease. Oliver and Violet had been a couple for years and had grown up together. She needed a break and went off - this gave Oliver and Taryn time to get to know each other. As a reader you don't get to see Oliver and Violet's relationship but you do get to see the growing connection between Oliver and Taryn and they seem so right together. We do get a HEA at the expense of Violet but you do feel the book ended as it should.

I look forward to reading Josh's story in book 2.

Thanks to NetGalley for the copy.

** spoiler alert **

This book is about Oliver who gets broken up by his girlfriend of 5 years and gets her best friend Taryn to help him get her back, they don't like each other at first, she thinks he is just a nerdy guy that is keeping her friend from living her life in college and he thinks she is just a party girl who gets with a lot of guys. When the friend goes away, they make a deal but when times goes by they get to know each other and start falling for one another.

I really enjoyed this book, I couldn't put it down, it was well written and I really liked their relationship, I liked the characters a lot, how he was the skinny nerdy guy but she just loved him for who he was, this was just a really sweet romance where they both experienced growth and found each other.

Love This New Series!! ❤️❤️❤️

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! This book has it all! I loved the Sheridan Hall by Jessica Calla as well so I was excited to see the newest series is set in not only the same universe, but on the same campus! With all of her books, there is humor, swoon worthy romance, and the best HEA ending making me crave more. I binged this one in two days and have already preorder the next book in the series, Making The Move. Can’t wait to dive into the next one!

Jessica Calla strikes again with another can't-put-down and well-written New Adult romance. From the moment we first meet Ollie and Taryn, their chemistry leaps off the page. I for cheered them throughout the whole story. I loved that they grew to be their better and true selves together and discovered how wrong they were about each other in the beginning. Highly recommend.

description

This is my second time reading a novel by Jessica Calla, and thankfully, I had a much better experience this time around!

In the interest of full disclosure, I'll admit my first impression of Ollie wasn't good. Like, at all. The dude was a mess. He seemed like a very overbearing, stifling boyfriend. Also came across as too judgy and worryingly misogynistic. With a dangerous tendency to get violent when drunk. I found him very off-putting and unlikable.

But by the end, he'd grown on me. Taryn's awesomeness had rubbed off on him and he ended up becoming a more chill, relaxed, carefree person. He became immensely more likable once he broke free of the plans and predestined path he believed he needed to follow. Once he allowed himself to be free to chase that which made him happy.

I'm not typically one for character driven books, as I tend to get bored when there's nothing but relationship drama moving a plot forward, but I have to say at no point was I bored while reading this book. Love a forbidden romance plot! I got sucked in and invested and was curious to know how they'd deal with the aftermath of facing Violet (Ollie's ex and Taryn's roommate and BFF). That had messy written all over it. And I was satisfied with how everything was ultimately resolved.

This was a very solid book, and a great choice to read in between other slow or super heavy stories. Just a simple tale of two unlikely people unexpectedly falling in love with each other (with some steaminess to give it a little kick and make it all the more fun!)

"We can be Tariver. Or Olyvin."
"Oh, I like Olyvin. Team Olyvin for the win."
.
La historia se centra en el rompimiento de Oliver y Violet. Ella se embarca en un viaje a Vienna en la Academia de Orquesta, así que los dos permanecerán separados por ocho semanas.

"Still, Violet was my forever. We had a plan."

"What exactly am I to you?"
From behind me, his voice carried with the fall breeze. "You're everything."

Al terminar el libro salí enamorada de Ollie, es un hombre gentil, dulce y sobretodo cuando tiene que luchar por lo que quiero lo hace con todo lo que tiene.

Totalmente enamorada de Ollie, alias Nerdilicious.

Oliver Stoneridge has always had a plan. Go to Harvard's Law School in Cambridge, graduate and move to New York City to work at a law firm, and marry his best friend and childhood girlfriend - Violet. That is until his girlfriend decides that she needs "space" and leaves New Jersey to study abroad. Leaving Oliver heartbroken, he decides to ask Violet's roommate and best friend - Taryn Markos - for help to get her back. The problem is they can't stand each other. Taryn decides to help Oliver if and only if he helps her write an essay for one of her classes. It isn't until after they've spent so much time together getting to know each other when they realize that there might be something going on between them.
I received this book on May 2019, and finally got around to it. This story was easy to read, cute, funny, and quite sexy! I personally love sexy-nerds, and I can't express how much of a turn on Oliver actually is. However, what really got my attention was what a gentleman he is. We don't see a lot of those in New Adult novels, and I truly enjoyed how being a bully was not being romanticized in this story. A quote that really spoke to me was: "To have been so codependent and then have to learn to live without each other must be hard".

Received an ARC from the author for an honest review:

This books was so sweet. It was a very well written enemies to lovers romance. I loved the transformation in Oliver the most. He had the best character growth. I really would have liked a longer epilogue to see where Taryn and Oliver ended up and what Oliver decided to do with his life since he decided not to do the plan he had mapped out. I felt bad for Violet at first but then when you read about the chemistry between Olivyn it was obvious they were destined to be together. I also did not like the fact that Violet purposefully posted the picture with her and another guy so soon after she left to get under Oliver's skin. I thought that was very immature of her. Overall, this was a really sweet romance where the two main characters experienced growth and true love!

I tore into this book. Oliver was the perfect amount of nerdiness. Taryn was nice after you understood her walls she had up. Loved the pace of the two getting together and when they did, wow! Hated when the book ended. I wanted to see more of what happens with them. Wasn't a fan of Violet but hope she redeems herself in the next book. Josh - what a great friend and I can guess who he likes. She better deserve him. Overall this book is a 5K for me and that means it is a keeper and would be on my keeper shelf if it was physical. Also means it is one of the few I would actually reread. Grab this one!

What a heartwarming and emotionally satisfying story. I connected with the heroine strongly and almost instantly as someone I could see as my friend, someone I cared about. She was interesting, relatable, smart yet not without her insecurity struggles, and so much more than she seemed to be on the surface. I loved how she challenged the hero's expectations in the best way possible. The love story was believable, and, at times, heart-wrenching. I was rooting for this couple so hard. Kudos to Ms. Calla for writing a great book!

Just...wow. I could not put this book down. I am pretty sure I read it in just a few hours. The story and characters just kept me sucked in as soon as I started it. The relationship between Taryn and Ollie was fun, heartbreaking, amazing and happy all at the same time and the writing made you feel all those emotions right along with the characters. I could not reccomend this book enough and can't wait for the next one!

Will they or won’t they

A great read for a day at the beach or sitting by the fire on a winters day.

An enjoyable book with a hero for once that doesn’t have a six pack. A refreshing change to read a love story with real characters we can all identify with, rather than mr and Mrs perfect.

A big plus is going to the gym wasn’t even mentioned. These two spent their time having fun and getting to know each other and I loved both of them. More please

really enjoyed this. The story is sweet with characters that you will either love or dislike. I disliked Vi so much and felt for Ollie and was rooting for his happiness. Taryn is a character that can be relatable as she is misjudged based on her appearance and this happens a lot to people. I would definitely recommend this sweet romance and look forward to seeing more of these characters in the next book.

Loved it

A few typos which were annoying. Apart from that I read it in one sitting-ish. Loved the dual POV and seeing the characters reveal themselves as the story progressed. Sometimes you can be acquainted with someone for a long time but it takes a split decision for you to learn who they really are.

Nope inter relationship between roommates who are friends is a big no no
I mean cmon it’s gross and i want my H and h to have an amazing all encompassing love not this when they are confused and don’t know what they want plus the declarations have to be something heartfelt.
So it failed on all three counts.
