Shirayuki's naturally bright-red hair has gotten her into a lot of trouble forcing her to flee to the neighboring kingdom... but fortunately it allowed her to meet the prince of Clarines, Zen! Thus starts a friendship between a most unusual herbalist and a lovestruck prince.
The Premise
Snow White with the Red Hair vol 3 throws in a pot full of princes and makes Shirayuki feel deeply insecure. Things with Raj didn't turn out anywhere near what I thought they would! He actually does cause a bit of a sensational incident and it really causes Shirayuki to feel like she is hurting Zen. But our girl isn't about to give in to political pressure. And I love how a new character gives her a way to help out Zen and get her feel back under her... because the political backlash is about to get dangerous!!
The Buzz
We get Obi's POV in Snow White with the Red Hair vol 3!! He's the mysterious guy with skills who claims to be Zen's servant... yeah, Zen decides what to do with the guy finally. Obi is an intriguing character as you aren't really certain why he's there. But he does jump into his new role with gusto. Actually his slice of life moments with Shirayuki are quite cute. If the romance wasn't already totally set you might have wanted her to go for him...

We get tons of friendship in Snow White with the Red Hair vol 3 and I LOVE it!! Shirayuki needs a little more female friendship in her life at the castle and a girl with a mission to save her way of life appears. Zen in put in a pretty tight predicament and with his big brother looking over his shoulder he needs to handle it politically correct! I love the plan they come up with and genuinely am looking forward to how Shirayuki saves the day...
The Visuals
Snow White with the Red Hair vol 3 kills it with the art!! The romance totally comes out in how space is used when Shirayuki and Zen are on the page together. It's beautiful, subtle and heartfelt. I love the new character art and how her way of life comes alive even though its just a few frames with her bird. And that finally scene where we are left on a cliffhanger!! GAHHHHHHH! I am on tenderhooks! I never suspected the art would add so much tension to this slice of life manga.

Yes, I just want him to fully realize how much he loves Shirayuki. *cries* Silly big brothers and dumb politics are holding back my ship and I don’t like it.
However, we still get those warm-fuzzy scenes that made my heart so happy and giggle, but not as much as I wanted. We also get a lot more Obi and that was awesome! I love his eyes and his personality. Such a great character!
I need the next book now with that cliff hanger!!

This volume features Obi's POV, especially his opinion on Shirayuki and Zen. With Obi being my favorite character, I loved getting to see things from his perspective.
One of the things I really love about this series is the friendships. Zen, Mitsuhide, and Kiki have a tight friendship, and other friendships are beginning to form as well. While I really love the romance in this series, I also really enjoy the friendships as well.
Also, I enjoy reading the author's sidebars in this series! That's not something I usually mention in a review, but these ones are really fun to read!

I like this volume sooooo much because it includes so many realistic conflicts that arise from Zen and Shirayuki's relationship and on top of that we get a closer look at the characters' personalities and motivations which make them beautifully three-dimensional!

As I was reading through this volume, especially its first half, I found myself wondering why it is that shoujo fantasy manga hasn't ever done a lot for me. I've been soaking in manga and anime for upwards of thirty years now, and have given a pass to works that are far more questionable than this, so it isn't a cultural thing.
Part of it I think, is that I'm picky about my fantasy in general. YA fantasy in particular has a huge uphill climb with me, whether it originated in Japan or not. A lot of fantasy manga feels like the author decided to make it a fantasy first, and then started building the world after that... if they bother to do that at all beyond there being castles, and no modern conveniences or guns. As a very minor example in this story, you have even relatively low-status people like Shirayuki wearing clothing with elaborate design, down to carved buttons. It's beautiful to look at! Still, the huge amount of labor required in a pre-industrial society has been swept under the rug. Where are the cooks, the ferriers, the blacksmiths, the seamstresses? All those glass bottles had to have been made by somebody. Even the author herself notices she has far more soldiers than maids in her fantasy castle. :D Fantasy is inevitably a product of the time and place it's created in. As a reader, it's interesting to see which elements the author considers important to their setting, and which not.
As for the story, the first two-thirds of this book just bored me. The stakes are fairly high for Shirayuki, but I don't feel those stakes. Maybe because a prince is on her side, and there is no way on earth he'll break her trust, it's hard to take any of the court intrigue seriously. The last third, with the falcon-like bird, seems to center on a debate as to how best to exploit the animal, whether killing it for its feathers or using it as a messenger. So the story is kinda meh.
Still, this series is finally starting to sink in with me, despite the fact that that it's a YA fantasy, and all those other things above, largely because of its main character. I like Shirayuki a lot, especially how she never backs down. She never loses a stare-down contest, never concedes the field no matter how worldly powerful her opponent might be. I enjoy the herbalism parts of the story, too, and how they contribute to a lived-in feeling for this world, much more than the political parts, which consistently feel underdeveloped.

Another great volume I’ll just sum up in bullet points:
* Izana’s a creep. And the stunt he pulled with Prince Raj was just SUPER mean and he fully deserved to faint.
* Zen and Raj—seriously no comparison though their interactions make me laugh. The way Zen was just going to pound into him… 😂
* The politics I didn’t quite get but that’s normal—maybe on a reread I would understand better?
* Shirayuki and Zein’s friendship and trust is top notch—I seriously love these two. 🥰🥰🥰
* I like Obi but sometimes he can be a bit too forward with Shirayuki. The part where he pulled her mask off I don’t quite get either. Was he trying to flirt with her or was he really just effected by the plants?
* The bird plot line was so fun and interesting! Not what I was expecting going into this series, but it was really cool. Though we can throw that viscount dude in the lake…

I really enjoy the stories in this series! Unfortunately, having seen the anime first, the manga doesn’t really add anything to the story that I didn’t already get from the show. Also, wow, does this volume end on a cliffhanger!

Review:
What I love about this manga is how cute Zen and Shirayuki are. How supportive they are to each other, kind and caring. How they tackle the obstacles they face and the things that threaten to separate them.
They just make a great team, and I really hope this manga doesn't drag out their romance and we never see them get married, they both deserve the world.

Il y a eu quelques tensions plus que bienvenue dans ce tome avec l'arrivée du Prince Izana, le frère aîné de Zen. L'avenir de Shirayuki en tant que pharmacienne au palais semble plus ou moins compromis.
Un troisième tome qui m'a beaucoup plu et que j'ai lu avec plaisir. Les dessins restent toujours légers et mignons.

I appreciate the author noticing that there's more soldiers than maids in the manga. It would have been nice to see Shirayuki become friend with one. Anyways, missed opportunity.

One of my favorite things about this series (outside of the VERY lovely romance) is how our main characters treat each encounter as something special because of how it WILL impact them. Whether that's in the now or the future, they choose to face situations and make decisions in a way they hope will be good, but could also be "bad" too. However, I think that's the beauty of it because they are ALWAYS given a choice. Despite how much Shirayuki and Zen care for one another, they never force the other to be or act a certain way. I think it was last volume but a great example is when Zen is asking Shirayuki if "Friend" or "Prince" is better and she answers that he's "just Zen" to her. Due to their first encounter and every encounter thereafter, it affected her in that moment because Zen has never forced her to choose and she was able to interpret their encounter through her own lenses. I'm not really sure if all this is late night rambling and makes sense, but either way, I really love how significant encounters are in this series and seeing that really bloom in this volume, even if some of those encounters weren't the best.
Shirayuki continues to stand strong in growing as an individual and doing all she can so that Zen never suffers because of her decisions. There was one moment where we finally see the fears lurking in her heart in how she cares so much for Zen and doesn't want to make a mistake that could possibly lead to him being dethroned, BUT! At the same time, she is willing to endure any treatment towards her so she CAN still stay by his side and nor does she WANT to leave his side, even if that could potentially happen in the future. Truly, seeing her steadfastness continues be deeply inspiring to me. <3
I loved the chapter of Obi seeing our leads from his perspective! Another fun and informative chapter that changed things up, even though I have been deeply enjoying everything so far! This volume contained the beginning of the arc with the birds, which I remember deeply loving years ago.

Chapters 9~11 Izana's Test of Loyalty
I don't get why everyone is hating on Izana. He might've seemed a little harsh (He's got the authority to do much worse tho) but reality is harsh and he's obviously the type who would do anything to protect his little brother, especially his heart. If you look at the way things turned around, he's basically training them to toughen up and have a clear mindset.
He's a brilliant person who cares about his people and tends to do things in an indirect way to get the best results.

"Snow White with the Red Hair" is fantasy-type manga that takes place in a faraway kingdom. At the beginning of the tale, Shirayuki wants to become an herbalist, but the prince of Tanbarun is planning to make her his concubine! She makes a run for it and encounters Zen, the second prince of the nearby kingdom of Wisteria. Zen helps her escape from her plight and escorts her to his kingdom, where she becomes a full-fledged court herbalist. The rest of the story follows their adventures together (and apart!) as they develop deeper feelings for one another and work to overcome the gap between their social stations.
What impressed me the most about this story was how balanced the characters were. Often, characters are written with extreme characteristics and stereotypes. While this can be funny and distinctive, it can also get old after a while. It was refreshing to see that Shirayuki wasn’t a helpless princess, nor was she refusing assistance. She certainly did want to do things for herself and on her own, but she wasn’t above accepting help when she needed it. Even Zen, despite his stubbornness and rule-flouting tendencies, didn’t just rush off to do whatever he wanted all the time. Instead, he faithfully played the role of prince and followed his duty rather than his emotions.
Personally, I find it so much easier to connect with a character who knows how to flex and adapt as their situation changes. Plus, it was so exciting to see these characters build their relationship the “right way,” by working through the rules and customs of their world so they could perform the roles they’d been given to the best of their abilities.

Oooh I love this so much.
I really love the main couple. I really like Shirayuki and how she gets a chance to show off her own skills without Zen. Zen is also a stand up guy, trusting her to do her own thing. When Zen and Shirayushi met, Zen was a lot more of a smart mouth, which I really liked about him, but I still find his mellow side very charming. I will say that the romance got established very quickly, and it almost feels baseless how fast and how deeply they care about each other. I think they've even gotten past the awkward phase, and are comfortable with embracing each other. Or they're very close to getting past that stage. To be fair, I don't know the timeline of events, so a lot more time could've passed than what's shown.
I'm not sure where the plot is going, but it looks like world building as well as developing new characters. Lol maybe Shirayuki and Zen will get married at the rate they're going.

Zen gets questioned by his brother about his relationship with Shirayuki, and rumors start to spread about the 2. Lords of lands nearby come to fawn over Prince Izana, and one of them is someone from Shirayuki's past, while the other is playing a political game Zen and Shirayuki must outmanoeuvre to save the local people.
Hmm, Prince Izana turns out to be less of a jerk than I previously thought in this one. I feel like the translation into English needed a little more work. There were several times in this volume I was left scratching my head and trying to figure things out more by context and the illustrations than what the words told me. A little confusing, but I do feel like the overall plot is improving and I actually really want to read the next volume (which has more been a case of I guess I should read the next volume to see if it is ok for the school shelves so far).
Notes on content: A few minor swears. No sexual content. There's some not nice actions towards the end that could result in harm but we'll have to wait till the next volume to find out. Shirayuki is enjoying her job in the castle of Clarines as an herbalist and growing stronger friendships with the people around her. Which is a good thing, as she'll need their support navigating the complexities of being a commoner and friend of the second prince, Zen, under the watchful eyes of the court and crown prince, Izana, particularly during a visit from the infamous prince Raj of Shirayuki's native home of Tanbarun and when another commoner brings a plea for assistance against the noble who rules her homeland.
This is where we realize there may actually be hope for Raj! Not for him and Shirayuki to end up together, but that he might someday become a decent human and perhaps even a good king. Otherwise, love all time spent with the crew, particularly when Kiki gets to show her skills! And that Shirayuki shows she's anti-jerk no matter which country they're from!
Content notes: No language issues. People around the court are still heavily implying that Shirayuki and Zen are more than friends, but no-one says anything outright. Perilous situations, but no outright fights or skirmishes in this one, more out-thinking difficult situations... and Shirayuki jumps out a window at the end.

All in all, a very textbook shoujo except with the female lead being just as strong and headfast as the male lead. Shirayuki is extremely independent and is deeply thoughtful about how her actions and choices will effect others and what sort of choices it will force them to make in turn, or what opportunities they'll be given. Because of that, right now, she is tending to worry quite a bit about the people around her but most of all Prince Zen. She worries for herself as well and if her very existence standing where she chooses to may be more problematic than neutral. However, by the end of this volume, Shirayuki seems to have made her mind up and is once again charging headfirst into what she thinks is right. Sometimes her rash decisions get her into trouble, and sometimes her boldness saves more than she foresaw. But most times, she's able to clean up her messes herself. Will she still be able to stand by Zen's side? And for how long?
Real talk though, I'm so ready for Shirayuki to become a court herbalist and stand closer to Zen. This vast gap between them socially just makes me feel so, so uncomfortable right now.

Very cute
I'm loving how this story is progressing - manga wise. I didn't know how much of the anime stuck to this part of the series until now.
The author scribbling down notes in the side is one of my favorite parts of these volumes, since this was written a while ago it's like I'm reading it while they write instead of years later.
Obi has always been such a good and interesting character that I'm glad to see More of him in this. He isn't just brushed off and it makes me happy to know that he gets some love.
Prince Raj is also a favorite! Name a better character arc! He still wants Shirayuki, and knows that she doesn't want him but is still willing to take her home and give her the life of a noble but effectively backed the heck off when Zen expressed that it would not be happening! He goes from 0 to 100 and it's so good to see him become a respectable prince.
The Popo arc was not my favorite; I always forget the characters names and why they are really doing what they are doing but I get Why it has to be done.

July 11, 2021The last chapter annoyed me, with the viscount bullying Shirayuki for her low birth. I didn’t feel it was logical that he threatened her guard - he may be nobility, but he’s in the palace and expressly going against the prince’s orders. You can’t order around a royal guard just because you’re noble....the guard was there to accompany her and oversee the test, so when you are blatantly cheating it’s kind of obvious who s going to be in trouble. Also pretty stupid to insult and manhandle the person that the prince is fond of. Even if Zen couldn’t take her side openly or he’d get ridiculed, he can certainly get his revenge later..
