Mistaken Divinity: A Beaumont and Beasley Story

Rate this book
A goddess of death is attempting to destroy the city of Talesend.

That's not particularly unusual.

Thor and Loki are pretending to be Nick Beasley and Lady Cordelia Beaumont.

That's slightly odd.

Nick Beasley has been given a magic hammer that summons lightning.

This could be a disaster.

Kyle Robert Shultz is the creator of the Aftermythos, an interconnected collection of stories set in an alternate universe where fairy tales and mythology are history. Shultz is a completely ordinary human being with no remarkable qualities whatsoever. Accounts suggesting that he is a dangerous wizard exiled from a parallel reality, a cleverly-disguised magical creature passing off the history of another world as original fiction, a mysterious trickster entity described in the folklore of a circumscribed region of Wales, or a pseudonym adopted by three talking otters stacked up in a trench coat should be dismissed as not entirely accurate.

I was so excited to read this story and Kyle didn't disappoint. (But does he ever? No. Not a chance.)
This story was a rollicking adventure from start to finish.
So glad no one was around because it totally had me laughing and gasping out loud.

I love this story for the short highly-entertaining read that it is. I’m coming to expect Shultz’s books and stories to be zany, light-hearted adventures of close encounters with the big names in folklore, fairytales, and mythology. With unexpected outcomes and quick wit, his stories make me laugh, smile, and sit back with a general feeling of contentment. Even if Loki and Thor don’t appreciate the methods used by Beaumont and Beasley, fans of the series most certainly will!

From the very beginning when Thor and Loki showed up at the Beaumont & Beasley door, I knew this would be hilarious. And like all Shultz stories, it was hilarious while still managing to pack a punch of feels. (Ahhh, some hints about Nick and Cordelia!) It was also very cool to see the connections to the “actual” Norse legends, since I’m more acquainted with the Marvel version. :)

Since this story has connections to both Hollow and “The Dragon Delusion,” I’d personally recommend reading both of those before this one. But you can read and understand this after reading just the first Beaumont & Beasley, The Beast of Talesend. “Mistaken Divinity” is free when you sign up for the author’s newsletter, The Blackfire Circle (which is written from the point of view of the amazing Malcolm Blackfire himself), so get ye to Kyle’s website and sign up! You don’t want to miss this hilarious addition to the Afterverse!

What I loved:
-A more traditional version of the Norse pantheon with all of the problems, but presented in a way that's not nearly so...uh, not family friendly, if you catch my drift
-Cordelia (she just wants her tea, why is that so difficult?)
-Nick (trying to be reasonable but no, Cordelia is there; the quickest way out is with some backhanded cunning, and she wants her tea, especially if there's a pending apocalypse)
-It's a very quick read; a perfect pick-me-up of hilarity and ominous foreshadowing to go with your morning tea

What I didn't like so much:
-Huh? I have to pick something I didn't like? Erm...I guess if I was in a mood for description/a slower pace this would annoy me, as it's fast-paced with primarily dialogue. But I know the characters already, and this is what I was in the mood for at the time. So...nothing I didn't like, really...

I read this book, The Centaur Express, and The Haunted Hoard all in a little more than an hour. Super fun books, and I recommend them to anyone who enjoys a little spin on traditional fantasy.

I have to say, the play on words in the title of this book caught my attention first. I love puns and play on words (plays on words?). And this book didn't disappoint. It may not have had many puns in the content, but it was still a super fun story.

This is my first experience with Beaumont and Beasley, so I didn't get some of the references to backstory, or appreciate the obvious foreshadowing. It also tied in a little with Norse mythology. And since everything I know about Norse mythology comes from the Thor movies, I had to re-align my preconceptions a little bit.

All told, I really enjoyed it, and I'm sure I'll be reading more Beaumont and Beasley in the future.

Did I use a Beaumont and Beasley story to get me out of a reading slump, why yes, yes I did!! Kyle Shultz never dissappoints and I needed something to get me back on track: this was the perfect fix.

I'm obsessed with Beaumont and Beasley to begin with but then we add Loki and Thor. I mean honestly how was I supposed to resist.

Mistaken Divinity is another patron story that can be yours for as little as a dollar a month.

In this months Adventure our heros find themselves face to face with themselves. The Norse gods Thor and Loki have taken the forms of Nick and Cordelia in order to confront the goddess Helja.

Wait I know what your thinking and this is not some lane rip off of Thor Ragnarok. There is no Hulk for one thing. And for another, Nick and Cordelia are much more qualified to handle a runaway death goddess than Thor and Loki are.

This was one of the best Afterverse tales yet.

I really enjoyed the story, and I found the characters engaging and amusing despite having never read anything with them before. I especially enjoyed the plot and the bits of Norse mythology thrown in(the one thing that confused me was when they said Freya was Thor's stepmom?? But there are theories that Frigg and Freyja were originally the same goddess, so maybe that's why). All in all, I absolutely loved it and I'm planning to read the rest of the Beaumont and Beasley stories as soon as I can!

You can find a full review of all of the Afterverse books here.

This is gonna sound mean, but I just don't really like Marvel. And yeah, I know Thor and Loki aren't Marvel's, but the ones in this book are clearly based on the Marvel version. The story itself was nice as usual, though.

My nerd side loved the introduction of the Asgardian pantheon to the Beaumont and Beasley world, and I really loved the characters.
