A summer interlude volume where Shoko Komi takes care of a young house guest, Rei, who has her own communication disorder (though this is one point of the series; though Komi has social anxiety disorder, many young people have psychological issues in communicating), pushing back in anger at everyone around her because her family has been moving so much. Komi and Rei actually learn to communicate very well together. Part of it is the age difference, as Komi seems to talk better to younger kids, and they begin to function as sisters. Compare Komi's paralysis in the early volumes to her relationship to Rei and you can see the progress she is making. And you see how Komi, learning from her own struggles to talk, can help others who are struggling to communicate.

But slow progress on the presumed future romantic relationship between super shy Tadano and Komi, who still can't quite click though they clearly both want to, in a brief scene.

Komi, who had set a goal of having a hundred friends, challenges Rei to the same goal, which is. . . fine; she encourages Rei to make social connections, though my nit to pick about it is that quality of friends is way more important than quantity.

A summer horror movie fest goes well, with a test of courage, where Najimi and others attend, sweet fun. And the volume ends well, satisfyingly.

This is another good volume of Komi-san, and unlike the previous one, this is one to share to a new reader of this title.

The highlight of this volume is the Komi-Rei dynamic. Unlike with her other friends, Komi has a hard time of reaching out to a child who hides well the trauma of moving constantly and losing friends. Thus, Rei has learned to hardened her heart to spare her the pain of separation. Somehow, Komi has to show Rei joy of making and keeping friends again.

The summer arc continues with the classic staple of test of courage, and we get meet the Katais, and now we know were Tadano's friend gets his fearsome aura.

This manga is really starting to settle into its groove. The gimmick isn't petering out, the characters don't feel stagnant, and the series doesn't feel like it is being unnecessarily stretched out.
A volume that shows what a kind person Komi is and shows the benefits she has gotten from working so had with Tadno to make friends. The arc with Rei is super heartwarming and I like the glimpse into more of Komi's family dynamics and the end of her visit with Komi is very satisfying. The horror movie arc is more silly, but there are some nice Tadano moments and I love meeting the Katai family!

During summer vacation, Komi watches after a young houseguest who has her own version of a communication disorder. There is a nice balance of heartwarming drama and joyful humor as they work out their relationship.

In the final quarter of the book, the friendship group gathers for a sleepover full of horror movies and a courage test in a dark forest. Much squealing, handholding, and instant embarrassment ensue.

Whoopsy! As I logged this book I discovered I skipped Vol. 12! Must backtrack ASAP! (You know, I did wonder for a second when that little houseguest had arrived . . . ) Considering the episodic nature of the series and the slow pace of the romance arc, it would be easy to skip volumes, but I certainly wouldn't want to miss a second of the happiness I get from reading about Komi and Tadano.

Another solid installment in the Komi series! I loved how much we get to see Shoko speak with her voice in this particular volume. I also love the look at social anxiety in other characters, as it truly looks different for everyone. Some have communication disorders out of choice, and others from paralyzing fear like Komi.
I also love that we see Komi and Todano both wanting to take the next step, but they don't know how. It's sweet.

We see Komi spending time with Rei, the daughter of her mom’s friend who staying with them for a week and despite a rough start, they have a wonderful time and that they’re a bit alike. Later, she and the friends have a lively dojo sleepover at a surprising location and an interesting development of infatuation happens. A- (91%/Excellent)

Danke. ♥

Oda, you can't do this to me. You can't kick me in the feels one minute then make me nearly pee myself chapters later.

Volumes like these are Oda at his best; showing vulnerability, growth, and fun social interactions. This series can be a rollercoaster in terms of quality, but when that quality occurs it SHINES. Loved it.

Komi and her young charge Rei are actually communicating quite well. Or are they? Faced with a difficult child, can Komi ‘hmph’ her way out of this one? Then we pivot to a sleepover at Kirai’s that basically highlights everything this series does well, and, yes, that means I get to talk more about the actual best character in the book.

If ever a volume of this series could be considered quintessential Komi, this is definitely up there. As I noted above, it takes all the things this series does well and just runs with it.

The Rei and Komi dynamic ends up being a ton of fun - the way that Rei copies Komi is an almost note perfect approximation of the way a young sister might look up to a big sister. Their friendship is really heartfelt and this section has some good bits in it, including a hilarious throwaway to how Komi’s brother spends her time.

So it’s something else when this suddenly goes for the feels and Rei lashes out viciously, acting out less so because of Komi but more because of the situation she keeps finding herself in with her mother moving for work.

Komi legit says more in this storyline than she has in the entire series and it was a good time for her to do so. It lets her shine bright while she helps Rei realize that you can leave your friends, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave your friendships. It’s all incredibly sweet and delivers the goods.

We then get a cute digression where Tadano and Komi are very much needing to see one another, but their mutual shyness causes them nothing but problems. If you ever questioned how much Tadano (and the book in general) loves Komi, you’ll have a solid guess by the ending when the view switches to first-person briefly.

Then comes Najimi planning a sleepover (at Kotai’s house, without first telling him, of course). This one’s also a real laugh because it uses this as a springboard for a bunch of jokes that almost all work. Kotai’s family is all very thug-but-not-really like him, but they aren’t the best at expressing themselves.

When we get the reams of text his dad is trying to impart just by scowling, that’s good, but it’s even better when the resident communication expert, Tadano, knows exactly what he means.

There’s almost too much to go over in this section. The horror movies are a bit weak, though Manbagi’s incredible love of them is pretty fun, but once Najimi shows up to start a test of courage things go particularly awry.

Before Tadano has to go through twice (no points for guessing who he gets paired with), the very sweaty Ase and the very self-obsessed Naruse go together and this coupling is as cute as it was last time at the beach. Naruse has the confidence Ase lacks and it was genuinely touching to see him lend her some.

Tadano gets put through the ringer - he is utterly jerked around by Najimi when he’s with Komi, the poor guy, and then goes through with Manbagi, who remains a wreck when it comes to her own feelings. She’s such a wonderful character that when she gets her feelings for Tadano shredded I’m going to be genuinely bummed. That’s what good writing will do, I suppose.

4 stars. An easy win for a series that has lost none of its zip for the most part, especially when it’s focused on what it does really well. A great excursion for the cast and the series has really been operating on a high note these last couple volumes.

This was such a sweet volume and shows that Komi is so much more capable than her anxiety allows her to feel. I loved the whole “tadano deficiency” and “komi deficiency” thing.

Ugh, forever waiting for more cute things to happen like it did a few volumes ago 👀

Happy reading!

The beginning of this volume was great, and I loved that there was some more Shosuke character development. However, said bit with Shosuke ended a little earlier than I hoped.

The majority was fun as always, but nothing particularly stood out to me.

At the end, the friends were watching horror movies, and nearly everyone was terrified. Komi was especially scared, and was holding onto Tadano for comfort. I was thinking, "Oh boy, is this another situation where there needs to be a male savior?" and was actually considering deducting points for that. But then I thought about it some more, and pretty much everyone was equally mortified. It just happened to show Komi in more detail because the story is shown from Tadano's perspective, and nobody really noticed Komi holding on order than Tadano himself.

The point is, this book was great in the beginning, good in the middle, and sexist/not really depending on how you think about it at the end. I think this volume is worth four stars as this series continues to fulfill its purpose. It's fun and lighthearted, with a couple new faces appearing each volume, and an ever-growing relationship between the two most prominent characters. Everyone gets a little more backstory or development sprinkled in every once in a while, as well.

About half of this volume was devoted to Rei and Komi's relationship, so that was a bit of a drag, since I don't find Rei to be a particularly alluring character.

But Katai and his family were a highlight, and things got interesting at the end, from a romantic point of view. Though maybe not my kind of interesting, and that love triangle that was already previously insinuated seems to be gaining traction for future volumes...

Still quite cute, but perhaps my least favorite addition to the series so far.

I loved the relationship between Komi and Rei and how big sisterly she was to her. Plus sharing her goal as a contest for 100 friends with Rei knowing it would help her as she moved touched my heart!
The friends visiting a dojo and having that zombie prank was fun too, plus seeing how the other classmates live and interact is fun!
The hints of a love triangle continue!

I love how Komi imparts her wisdom of how to make friends with Rei, so cute!! The first couple chapters are so touching, with Komi offering emotional support to this poor little girl who has to move all the time and has trouble keeping friendships. I loved the chapter where Komi and tadano just can't find the courage to ask each other out on a nice day Also, I find it hilarious how Tadano has this psychic ability understand everyone who talks without actually speaking😂

Summertime lingers, and with it the attendant duties of helping out relatives, bumping into friends at the local udon shop, surviving a rigged "test of courage," and doing everything one possibly can to endure the dearth of warmth that comes from not socializing with everyone's favorite, quiet beauty. KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE #13 feels very much like another interstitial volume for this manga series, though not without a few delightful moments worth recalling.

The current volume brings to a close Komi's interaction with her tiny, emotional, questing-for-certainty relative, Rei Natsuki. Circumstances go awry when the little girl realizes she's grown overwhelmingly attached to Komi and her family. For one who transfers schools and says goodbye to her neighbors more often than she says hello, Rei isn't sure what to do with the closeness she feels with Komi's (and Komi's family's) constant attention. It's a little heartbreaking, to discern how the girl's growth is so closely tethered to her untethering to the community around her, but Komi, surprisingly breaks Rei out of her shell. They become friends, and pledge, together, to make more friends in the long run.

KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE #13 doesn't expand the purview of the manga's original premise. It does, however, make a concerted effort to show the different ways one can value friendship amid awkward circumstances seemingly beyond one's control. The ongoing episode with Rei is a testament to his approach.

This volume also includes is a delightful intercalary chapter involving gamer-girl Omoharu Nakanaka, who typically roams the school halls wearing an eye patch. First, the girl pulls an all-nighter blasting away noobs (which is normal for her). When her tummy grumbles, and all of her snacks are gone, Nakanaka heads to the convenience store (at 2:12am). In doing so, she dances all through the empty streets, masters a sword fight with an invisible foe, barrels into a quick-change gunfight with another invisible foe, and accidentally exposes her humor to a bunch of lazy first-years. When she's spotted, the girl freezes, panics, and flees, screaming in her head.

Nakanaka is a background character, but sometimes, she feels very much like one of the most real characters in the whole book.

The latter third of KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE #13 finds the core cast hoofing it over to Katai's place. The sort-of delinquent's family dojo serves as the setting for horror movie night and Osana's spurious test of courage at the nearby shrine. Katai's family is a hilarious assemblage of tough-as-nails-but-iridescently-sweet people, whom, unsurprisingly, scowl all of the time and mumble all of their words. Good thing Tadano is a communications expert.

The whole scenario is fairly rote and nothing particularly fascinating occurs beyond the delightful pairing of Shibuki Ase (the girl who sweats all of the time) and Shisuto Naruse (the clueless narcissist). Naruse, for all his ego-driven ineptitude, offers the girl resounding emotional support when she beats herself up on account of her out-of-whack body functions (Naruse: "Ase, you have every right to love yourself."). A very strange, and strangely appropriate, companionship emerges.

As has been the trend of late, readers don't receive much in the way of Tadano-and-Komi encounters. Hopefully, as summertime crests, these two wayward friends might drift closer, even if out of pure happenstance.

Another solid offering from one of my most fave series.

Ah, Tadano, will Komi and you ever get over your issues and realize you both have a crush on each other, and that you make a perfect couple? Komi, all you have to do is look at Tadano, and he instinctively knows what you are thinking. The two of you are so much in synch, you can go a whole day without uttering a single spoken word, yet carry on a nonstop conversation. It's like in the Marvel Comic's Inhumans - there, King Black Bolt cannot dare utter to even whisper a single vowel, such is the power of his ability, his voice can literally destroy mountains. Yet, his commands are always understood and carried out, as his wife, Queen Medusa, well, all she has to do is search her beloved husband's face, and instantly knows what he wants her to do or say in his stead. Now Komi and Tadano don't have super powers, but they fit together extremely well, and Tadano always knows what Komi is thinking, but can't give voice to. Shes a gorgeous gal, and communication disorder or not, she's such a kind, loving soul. Especially to her Tadano. He's the only guy she even sees. Everyone else is just a friend, be they female, male, or Najimi, lol. As for little Rei, she may have started out as a spoiled brat, but Komi quickly won her over. Now, Rei wants to be just like Komi when she grows up. Later, the gang go to Makoto's family's Dojo for a sleep over. However, Najimi shows up, and talks everyone into taking a test of courage by hiking in pairs up to a remote shrine in the dark in the middle of nowhere. Well, as anyone who loves the dog named Courage knows, "Strange things happen in the middle of nowhere!" And they sure do. Well, Komi gets paired with Tadano, then later Manbagi gets paired with Tadano, and while standoffish at first, Manbagi yet again realizes she definitely has a crush on Tadano. Fears are revealed, fortitudes are examined, and a few pranks get thrown in, by of course, none other than Najima. All in all, another enjoyable volume. I eagerly look forward to the next one.
