His mind has been fractured for years. Now he could be humankind’s only hope of stopping the end of our species…
Special Forces Captain Cade Rearden struggles to control the whispers in his head. Plagued by Multiple Personality Disorder, he nearly spirals into insanity after extremists kill his whole team and hold him captive. Defeated but not broken, he can hardly believe it when an artificial intelligence named Doris rescues him, then recruits him for an impossible mission.
Pulling together a crack military team, Rearden must take down Janus, a rogue AI intent on launching a chain of deadly attacks on American soil. And the key to staying one step ahead of the enemy could lie in understanding and protecting the incredible knowledge Doris possess. Knowledge that didn’t originate here on Earth.
Can Rearden somehow control his internal chaos and the battles raging around him? Can he and his team prevent the genocide of the whole human race? The stakes don’t get much higher.

Admitted tech geek, entrepreneur, cyclist and inveterate storyteller, JK Franks’ world was formed by a childhood spent in the rural South growing up during the Space Age. This is when he developed a love for writing. He also became an avid student of history and science, and a regular reader of reference books and biographies. Once he discovered science fiction he never looked back.
His protagonists are human: not superheroes, just normal people with the same problems as everyone else, but who rise to challenges when they come along. The Catalyst series combines his passion for hard science fiction with his outlook on self-reliance.
Franks and his wife now live in West Point, Georgia. He is currently working on this next book. It's always incredible when you stumble across a new author and suddenly want to power through every word they have written. Jk Franks has become one of those authors and I am very intrigued where this series will take us.
State of Chaos was a fresh twist on the "AI armageddon" genres that blends science fiction, political and technical realities, and the influence extraterritorialism into a world that had me looking forward to the next page after page after page. No matter if you are a science-fiction fan or a military-fiction fan JK Franks has been able to bring together these worlds into a fresh and creative story. As the heart of the series is Special Forces Captain Cade Rearden, who in itself, is such a dynamic character whoes personality every reader can literally relate to. Where will he take us as I begin to turn the pages of book 2, Midnight Zone?
No matter how you enjoy the story, through anear flawless audiobook, your favourite e-reader, or as a hard copy, be sure to give this series a try. You will not be disappointed. I can't wait to jump right into book two as soon as I hit submit.
( Format : Audiobook ) "Putting them out of their miseries." A satellite station abandoned by people but with a still resident, watching AI, three signals over approximately two years which appear to be messages from space, a small group of children who find the satellite complex, and in Washington, a rogue AI who wants more... State of Chaos is an high octane, fast paced thriller in which mankind itself is fighting for survival as two powerful computer based entities face up to each other. Numerous characters, introduced carefully, do not overwhelm the story and Cade Rearden, the lead figure from the series title, is but one - or perhaps several - of them: a soldier with multiple personalites, recruited to help the defence. It is a long book, lasting appropriately seventeen hours, but never tedius, even when DORIS is explaining technologies way over this reader's understanding.
In part, this was down to the narration by Lee Strayer, whose well paced reading carried the text with just the right input of expression, well modulated and with good, individual voicings of the characters. His pronunciations of some words were a little unusual but did not distract from the overall performance.
This was a most enjoyable and exciting read which felt frighteningly plausible. I was fortunate in being freely gifted with a complimentary copy of State of Chaos, at my request, by the rights holder via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much. Cade Rearden is an unusual protagonist: not sure that I like him - but I look forward to meeting him again in the next of author J.K.Frank's new series. Recommended to readers who enjoy fast paced thrillers with plenty of action.
Amazing as always.... Jk Frank’s never lets you down. Lee strayer did an incredible job narrating as well. I need more of this story but I think the series continues as more of Cade than the kids & Doris in this book. So may interesting concepts and ideas. Science fiction meets a bit of reality. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
In rural Georgia, a group of young people stumble across an abandoned facility. When they enter the facility, they find Doris, a sapient Artificial Intelligence being. The facility was originally part of the SET I network, hoping to capture transmissions from space. When it was abandoned, the computer system holding Doris was given the directive to keep searching for messages from space.
This story pops ahead a few years and there have been amazing improvements done on the facility and the computer system Doris resides in.
A lot happens in this story, from who is recruited to help Doris to the finding of a malevolent AI that wants information from Doris.
The book is action packed and a fun read. It is the first book in a series and I can hardly wait until 2020 to read the next installment.
I loved the characters, especially Doris, and I loved the Bat Cave technology.
I received this book from the author in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.
What started out to be an amazing story line fell apart just a few chapters in and the rest was just a boring morass that I thought would never end. There were too many characters, all poorly developed. The author kept repeating the same pieces of text multiple times and someone really needed to do a professional editing and proofing job on this mess. Don’t waste valuable reading time on this volume when there are so many good books for you to discover.
Interesting book! Grabs you right in the beginning with Cade's military detail being ambushed in part by an AI! Then you have teenagers finding an abandon Seti site, with an AI! It's a great read and full of adventures! Read it, you will love it! I am anxiously waiting for book two!!
Brings together three of my favourite story plots from the world of sci-fi with militaristic theme and a little sprinkling of self serving politicians to keep it bubbling along.
Sometimes you just get lucky. J.K. Franks’ novel, Midnight Zone, looks absolutely fascinating to me, but I decided to start with this first book in the series to make sure that I knew everything I was supposed to when I started the next book. Now, all I can say is, “WOW!” State of Chaos is an amazing ride that had me hooked from the very beginning straight through to the final page.
This book has everything a good thriller needs and a heck of a lot more. There’s a war between two rival AIs. There is first contact with an alien species. There’s a plot to create a coup within the U.S. government which will have the unavoidable side effect of killing many millions of people. And there are a few decent people dragged into the plots and conflicts that are trying desperately to keep Armageddon from happening.
On top of all of that, Franks has clearly thought very carefully about all the issues involved and pulled together a highly credible setting. These are events I could imagine happening in the modern U.S., which is quite an accomplishment since it involves two AIs, aliens, and a lot of high-tech break throughs.
The book is called a Cade Rearden Thriller, and frankly Cade, with his military training and multiple personalities is a great character, but there’s nothing in this first book to make you think he’s the only main character—i.e. the character the whole series will be built on. That’s because the rest of the cast from the friendly AI, Doris, to the teenagers she recruits to help her fight the war, to the handful of critical military personnel and scientists fighting to save humanity, are also great characters. I hope very much that they appear in the next book as well.
State of Chaos is an amazing experience. If you like high octane thrillers, strap on your seatbelt and give this novel a try.
I received this book for free from Audiobook Boom in exchange for an honest review.
This is an interesting AI versus Us storyline that we’ve encountered before but this one has much more personality. The characters are likable, not having much background but the story moves along quickly and I don’t miss it or need it. The plotline is perhaps a little implausible but it’s well-written, everything fits together nicely, and I did enjoy it. In this first volume of the series, Doris, the pleasant, morally gifted AI is pitted against the malicious, power-hungry AI called Janus. Doris recruited four teenagers to help her with her upgrade plans. The three teens plus one younger brother, while exploring for a campsite, had discovered Doris in an unused telephone relay station. With the kids' initial help, Doris created quite the facility, recruiting additional scientists and assistants of all disciplines. Doris also needed muscle, for protection, and possible tactical missions. This is where Special Forces Captain Cade Rearden came in. It’s a complex story and only got better as it progressed. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
So I thought. This turned into a disaster. Needed an editor. Why tease us with an alien message and half way through the book no alien? This is Skynet vs HAL. Two sentient AI using mankind as pawns. What?
"Open the Pod bay doors, please, HAL"
"I know you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and that is something I cannot allow to happen"
"Uh, oh!"
I can't remember a book that started out with an interesting 2 or 3 chapters then turned into...uhm...I don't know.
Two super-computers, humans, and aliens are brought together by JK Franks in a terrific action novel. His intricate storyline shows the good and bad of artificial intelligence along with the creativity and violence we humans bring to the table. Cap these off with seemingly benevolent messages from the cosmos and you have an exciting and entertaining book. I loved it!
This book was so filled with computer terror tricks that it made me believe it was all possible now. The kids in the story and how a compassionate AI entity taught them how to develop their own skills and become a part of a world-saving organization. There were moments when it seemed all too true, dealing with the takeover by a thinking machine with nothing important except winning at all costs.
I’m not a huge fan of interrogative back and forth in order to provide the reader with basic understandings of an item or subject. Lots and lots of that going on here so not my favorite. Not really a spoiler but I was also less than enthusiastic about the just in time discoveries of abilities and tech to save the narrative more than once. Would not have have seemed so ‘convenient’ if they happened earlier in the storyline and then found to be useful later.
Amazing book! Not sure if it’s a fictional story or a forecast for our future. The story is very well written and the characters are great. The characters are diverse but come together well in the story. The computer AI is such a great and believable villain. It’s scary because you can see this story as a real future reality.

Exciting combination of commando adventure and Sci-Fi
Fast paced and relevant to current events with politics and advancement of AI as an unclear and undefined threat. The characters are well developed and believe able. I was intrigued and easily got to the finish.
This was my first read of any of Mr. Franks work and I will certainly be reading more.
I enjoyed reading this action packed story. The establishment of two competing artificial intelligence entities provided an interesting conflict. I would have liked to hear more about the character Micah and what his secret was all about. Definitely a page turner! Great job Mr Franks!
Fun read. Kept me wanting to know more on a continuous basis. Also made me reflect on many topics from philosophy to ethics. Fair balance between action, science, low key romance, adventure and political schemes. Want more!
Fantastic character development. Very intense and a few good twists. I'm not usually into these types of tech stories but this one held my attention. I had a hard time putting it down.
We are thrown into the book of the future – or perhaps it is actually the possibility of NOW? It’s going to appeal to a wide range of readers, from young adult to seniors (who actually have a better picture of the progress and growth of AI). Fact and speculation, blended well into an exciting, thrilling possible future, makes a fantastic reading experience!
Doris was cataloging the signal spikes she received from space. But this time was different -- something was out there, something that was attempting to make contact, a 64% likelihood, and finding it had been the primary mission since her inception long ago, to monitor the stars for radio signals of unknown origin. This was the third such signal spike she had ever recorded, but each time, no other earth stations had corroborated the event. It could be a phantom signal caused by faulty hardware – but it was different and uncovering new data.
Doris needed to communicate to a human, but only one of her original team was still alive. In half a minute, she easily passed through firewalls and encryption. Suddenly one of her internal monitoring alarms notified her of a hostile code tracking her through one of the systems. It was not interfering, but definitely watching her. When a wave of energy passed over and through her, trying to compress the file system she was contained in, she recognized the attack and alerted the security system to take action. She spoke to the intruder and it answered back. She would bet this one would be back – it was just getting started!
Special Forces Captain Cade Rearden struggles with Multiple Personality Disorder after extremists killed his whole team and held him captive. He is amazed when an artificial intelligence named Doris rescues him, then recruits him for an impossible mission. Along with a crack military team, Rearden will try to take down Janus, a rogue AI just beginning to launch deadly attacks on America. Most important of all, however, is protecting Doris and the data she has been gathering!
This is an amazing story that is thrilling because it actually could happen. Amazing progress has been made with artificial intelligence, and when it can improve and repair itself, one wonders if human interaction is needed anymore! So much is going on in this exciting story as we observe the search for the malevolent AI that will be looking for information gathered by Doris. Can Rearden’s team succeed? Can Doris keep her nemesis from destroying her? Grab your copy and find the answers!
I found this to be a very long and complex story. I liked the fact that the various different groups of people came together to try and defeat the influence of the evil AI - someone/thing who was everywhere.
There were parts of the story that made me feel like I was there e.g. the parts of the story that featured Cade and what he went through. I like a bit of military action in books, I have to say.
I got a little bit lost with some of the computer terminology and I think some of the explanations there could have been a little shorter. This was an extraordinarily long book! It also had a fair few typos which was distracting sometimes but it didn't detract from the story.
All in all, this was a great read and I would love to know what Cade and the rest of the gang get up to next.
I was really looking forward to this after reading the summary under the title but not only did it not disappoint, it was even better!!! So I am a sci-fi nut but this story is amazing! I love the tie-in with mental illness, especially MPD which is an extreme disorder - many people think it is the same as schizophrenia but it is not! Because I work in the mental health field, along with education, I love it when people are able to see someone struggling with this illness who is actually a hero. Great job on this book!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
From the very beginning of the story I was hooked. The author took me on a thrill ride as he described the battling AIs and the humans who became involved . His writing made me feel like I was there, and it is apparent that the author has done meticulous research. Can't wait to read the next Cade Rearden adventure!
It was okay. Very long. Started out like a YA book, with the kids finding the AI Doris. Then switched to Cade, the main character soldier type. Finished it but didn't like enough to pick up others in the series.
