Diary of a Gay Porn Star

Rate this book
I guess you could say I was just like any other straight guy in his twenties: booze, bars, pumping iron, chasing girls – you know the deal.
Until I became a gay porn star.
This is how I got here.

The Instagram message came out of nowhere: “Hey, I’m Mike from Broke Straight Bros. We’re a gay porn site, but we specialize in finding unknown straight guys like you. We came across your profile and really like your look. We’d love to explore your interest in doing a shoot with us! PS: the $$$ would be substantial.”

Of course I laughed it off and moved on. I mean, I’m straight – why would I ever do that? But fate had other plans. When my mom’s health issues took a turn, her doctors said she needed life-saving surgery – and her insurance wouldn’t entirely cover it. So since I was already broker than broke, I swallowed my pride, crawled back to Mike, and made an offer: one solo video. No sex. No other guys. Just me, my hand, and some lube, all in the name of helping my mom.

My first shoot went surprisingly well – so well, in fact, that it went viral. So Mike came back with an even more shocking offer: $10,000 for a shoot with a guy. And with my mom’s bills mounting, I pushed the anxiety out of my mind, watched some gay porn for research, and then had dinner with my potential costar, Justin Kane, just to feel things out. But that created the biggest problem of all: Justin turned out to be funny, kind, charismatic, and has a bubble butt sent from the gods…

And against all odds, I think I might like him. According to Mike, though, the #1 rule in porn is never to fall for your costar. Ever. If I catch feelings and make things weird, I could get fired on the spot and lose my only shot at saving my mom. But the clock is ticking, the shoot is tomorrow, it’s too late to back out now…

And Justin’s gooey brown eyes are getting no less mesmerizing.

Ok.
This book was incredibly delicious.

Jon Rivera is a young man who is totally broke. Like broke broke. Each day is a struggle. He barely has anything. And he has to take care of his mother who is in coma. I love him because even with all of that, he found a way to laugh about it.

« Thinking of my mounting bills, I grab a beer and head into my bedroom, sitting down on the mattress with a sigh. My bed frame is falling apart, meaning my two-hundred-pound body makes the bed sag a little. Suddenly the thought strikes me that I am so broke, I cannot afford a fucking bed – clearly, something has to change.
Despite myself, I laugh at my situation a little. ».

In the middle of his meltdown, he receives a text from a guy name Mike. Mike wants him to become a....pornstar.

« Hey, I’m Mike from Broke Straight Bros. We’re a gay porn site, but we specialize in finding unknown straight guys like you. We came across your profile and really like your look. We’d love to explore your interest in doing a shoot with us! PS: the $$$ would be substantial. ». .

After a big struggle (he considers himself straight straight, and it's still porn ) , Jon resigns himself to do it. He needs the money and no other solution is there.

From there Jon Rivera aka Maverick Smith was born.

His first scene is a solo scene.
He
Just
S***
His
Own
D***.

I mean.
Speechless.
Buzz on the site.
Number 2 most-viewed debut ever.
Another proposition.
Another video. With another man this time.
Epic.
Another buzz.
Then another proposition with another big star: Justin Kane.
The check is more and more important.
The future is brighter.
And between him and Justin Kane there is a little...something going on.

This end on a total cliffhanger!
I'll love read the next book.

Every once in a while, I get a CRAVING for a certain thing. A certain genre.. a certain feel of a story. I get this and there really isn’t any other way to say it than I get desperate!

I start scanning through GR like a frantic person and I read the first thing I set my eyes on that seems to have a something of what I’m looking for.

This, unfortunately almost always, ends up not having the greatest consequences...

This is my very first Seth King. I’ve marked some of his books as TBR but I’ve not gotten as far as reading them yet. I’m sad to say that if this is the author’s normal writing style, I won’t be joining the band wagon. I will however give another try to them to be fair.

There were really a few great ideas in this, but it sadly just never went anywhere? I mean...it had so much potential? But there was a boat load of cheese and crackers and if it wasn’t this short I don’t think I’d have finished it. Even with my unsatisfied craving.

I can’t even mention all of the things that just drove me nuts.
I’m in the medical profession and I don’t know about America but in South Africa, the nurse does NOT discus your account with you during a visit... I can go on about only that if you need me to but really? What would be the point?

Don't get me started on his fabulously professional therapist... yeah.. Nope. I'm sealing my mouth now.

I could see the story making a turn for the better where Justin came into the picture but that didn’t pan out either. It just made me want to throw my reader. This could have been something really great, and darling we don't give a damn if you write "porn" but at least give it a story? Some reality?

I’m now one cranky woman with an unsatisfied craving for a porn star book. Thank you very much.

4.5 stars Meet Jon Rivera
He’s got low self-esteem, tries to survive and in desperate need of money. First, he was the popular guy with a promise to a great future, and now, not anymore, with a record and no money. His mom got sick, sicker, sickest and that’s where he has to step in.
The answer to his problems falls on his doormat when he gets an Instagram dm with the offer for modeling. Right! It’s for a gay porno site. Right! He only has to do some introductions and show off his body.

After a lot of inner turmoil, weighing the pros and cons he accepts the offer.
Everyone is delirious enthusiastic about the new porn star.

“my dick harder than a math exam”

Meet Mike Miller
He’s the recruiter for a porn site. Finding the new guy is one, but getting him on board is something else. And they need him! And not only to show his body. Mike has to conquer Jon.

Surprisingly refreshing watching the story alternate between Mike and Jon. Angles from both sides of the story was quite enjoyable. We are a witness to some delicious awareness of sexuality.
Jon is quite open-minded and dedicated. Unaware of his charms. He tells us a lot about himself, I found him adorable, almost innocent he seems, and still going further than anyone, including himself, ever expected.
Captivatingly written, honest and with humor. I loved the scenery.
It’s almost like a Christmas story, sparkling lights, from cold broke to hot stoke.
There will be a next installment, awesome!

Note:
I’m so lucky to live in a country with a good health insurance policy, and I’m sad about the fact others aren’t as lucky as I am.

I love how everybody out there is giving it 3+ stars and here I am with my 2 stars and my DNF at 85%.

This is not Seth King’s best work. There. I said it.
I know the author wrote this book as a “Fuck you” to an ex boyfriend and that could be a problem and a blessing. I find that most books that are written as a “fuck you” to other people or movements are, sometimes, not done very well. Most books that were done as a response to the “Cocky” word being copyrighted were lame as hell. Authors sometimes try too hard on those types of books and lose their essence in the process.

I am sure the author had other books that were better than this one. There has to be one.

The sex was meh, the plot was almost non existent and the MC was as fun as watching paint dry. It felt cheap. Like reading a Walmart novel. Let’s not even mention the constant need for the author to put down women to lift their male character up. “Women don’t know how to do this and that” “I’ve done with females before but this doesn’t compare to...” “This female was mean once but this guy isn’t. Females are so evil” etc (I am joking in that last one...sort of). This is a disease that M/M books have and I am working hard to eradicate it.

I am sure that the sex-without-plot thing was done in purpose to fight the author’s ex boyfriend but yikes. You should have thrown any of your other books at your ex-boyfriends face and move on.

I love porn, I love fast-paced stories, Seth's straightforward writing style never bored me. When I'm not reading, I'm thinking of Jon and what's gonna happen next and it's been so long since I'm this invested in a story lol!

"Straight guy" gets into gay porn because of a tragedy in his life and he needs money.

Old tired trope. Yawn.

Sex scenes were boring. Characters are lifeless.

Also didn't understand the need for the porn recruiter to have his own POV and story. I mean seriously? Who gives a fuck.

The story is short and I still skimmed a bunch and almost DNF.

The story ends in a cliffhanger. We can all guess what happens next. Predictable. Doesn't need to be milked into a series.

This was. Not good. Won't waste my time on the sequel. Just. No.

Sooo...I gave this book 2 stars because it ends with a cliffhanger, it's the 1st book in a series, the 2 main characters don't even meet in person (they have like 3 convos on the phone in the last few pages and seem to be falling for each other already...like....how??) and it felt like I was tricked into reading it because these factors are not mentioned anywhere in the description, otherwise I wouldn't have read it. Other than that, I thought it was very mediocre, the main character was bland, barely any background info and the "straight guy turned bi (I guess)" plot was rushed and not believable for me. Sorry to leave a negative review because I liked a few books by this author, but this was not for me, and in may not be for a lot of people.

I have to say that this book intrigued me so much. I love the straight guy to gay genre so much. Seth King did an incredible job on this book by taking us through the steps that his main character Jon went through to get to the point where he was when this book ended. I will be honest when I say I was not not ready for this read to be over and now I will have to impatiently wait the next book!!! I really wish it was already out but I know that it will be worth the wait!!!

Jon is as straight as they come. He does not have a problem with gay people. He is one of those people that believes in the “ live and let live” way of life. But he has never thought of anyone other then woman for himself.

Jon has not had it easy. His mom is in the hospital from an illness and they lost their home because of it. He had to drop out of college and whenever he tries to better his life with a better job, he gets turned down because he has a felony assault on his record. Jon is at his wits end.

One night unexpectedly Jon gets an email asking if he ever thought of being a model. At first Jon is skeptical about replying but in the end he does. What he never expected was the guy, Mike, that emailed him to be a recruiter for Broke Straight Bros, a gay porn site. He is interested in Jon comin aboard and if for no other readon then to do a solo video.

Jon is very skeptical about doing this because he is not sure that he would be able to perform even by himself for porn, much less a gay porn site. Jon is not worried too much about what others will think because he does not have a lot of people in his life, but he is still just not sure. After much consideration he finally agrees to a solo shoot because let’s be honest the money is just too good.

Will Jon be able to perform for the camer? Will he enjoy it? If so will he decide to take it further if given the chance? Could he actually do it with another guy? These questions and so many more will be answered in this read.

I truly enjoyed this book. I honestly cannot wait for the next book to come out to see how things progress for Jon!! Jon is one of those very likable characters and one of those that makes you look forward to more with them in it!! Seth King did an incredible job on this book and I cannot wait for more to come out in this series.

Was given this galley copy for free in a random drawing!!

4.5 hearts
I read the synopsis for this book and was immediately interested. I was delighted to receive an arc from the author and started it right away.
What we get is a very personal and interesting story from a man who is struggling with some major things in life and who really could use a break in whatever form. What he gets is a break in a totally unexpected way being offered to do a shoot for a gay porn company.
Money can do a lot of things and in this case it can make sure his mom will be taken care of. He takes the gamble and does that first shoot.
The next offer is there and he also takes that on and then comes the offer that’s to good to refuse, right??!
As the blurb says the offer is to shoot with a guy and is he willing to do that?
What you don’t read in the blurb and what you need to experience for yourself is how this all evolves. The feelings, the thoughts, the insecurity, the loneliness, the care, the family love…so much for one person to be going through.
Those are the things that drew me into this story. There is so much underlying sentiment and emotions that I found myself feeling very involved in what he is doing or willing to do.
The conversation between both men is extremely interesting and sharp. I love how the author played that out including the rules and regulations they have to endure.
And there is where my only point of criticism comes from. I didn’t expect this book to end where it did. And then finding out there will be a book 2?
I am seriously not wanting to wait for that book! I want to read what happens and see how this all ends up.
So please Mister King can you make sure to get that part two out asap please. That would be highly appreciated 😉
On a site note I wonder about Mike and his happiness but perhaps that is something for another story, I guess 🙂

A wild and fun read... please give me more!

Diary of a Gay Porn Star by Seth King is a fun read. Some parts funny, some parts emotion pulling...this story grabbed me right away and took me on a wild ride. Well written story that mixes interesting story, entertaining characters and heated scenes together to deliver an amazing reading experience. This was a story about a guy who needs money to take care of his mother. So this is his answer to getting money quickly. It just starts out as him alone with the camera but develops into more when the money offered increases. Then things change when he begins to get to know a future costar. However, this is where the book ends. I would have loved to have known what happened with the costar but not enough. Had I known there were two books in this series, I don't think I would have made the purchase. I love Seth King but I would have gotten something else. This book did not need a cliffhanger. It didn't make sense to me to stop the story when he did.

One and half stars

So I'm seriously ticked at myself for failing to realize that I did not want to read another book by this author. Like the book "Straight", this is a badly written story about unappealing people participating in uncomfortable sex scenes. Like "Straight" it also bizarrely lists gay stereotypes as if there were fact. Either the author is actually writing satire or is laughing at the reader for being dumb enough to waste their time on this crap.

The story ends at a random point. The good news is this is really short. The bad new is it apparently a first installment.

A fun read that offers a different take... this is not a romance! It is a cliffhanger, however. What's super disappointing, though, is that part 2 appears to be nonexistent. 😟

“Well, okay. I’m going to become a gay porn star today.”

(Love the dedication. Pretty sure we all have an ex who deserves a 🖕🏻.)

Set in and around Atlanta, Georgia.

Jon Rivera is a big, solid dude—6’2” and 200 lbs. Biracial: half-white and half-Cuban.

Jon was an excellent basketball player. He attended the University of Georgia, but he lost his scholarship and ended up dropping out of college.

Currently, Jon is a “broker than broke” felon with a terminally ill mother.

But an Instagram DM changes Jon’s life.

Watching the gay porn…and liking it.

Jon’s sensitive side is very endearing.

Jon is also rather an exhibitionist. He’s always reveled in the attention, the appreciation…and the praise. He’s getting it now—more than ever before.

“And is it problematic to put ‘straight’ guys on a pedestal, like they’re sexier than openly gay men? Sure. But hey, this is a business, and that is just the stuff that brings in the big bucks.”

One of the best things about a gay male author writing a book about gay men is that you get a realness and authenticity that’s not there when penned by others. The BS in the above quote? It’s unfortunate, it’s true—and Seth King has the balls to acknowledge it. Lesser writers (of GFY garbage) wouldn’t deign to address this.

Beautifully done with anatomy, physiology, and verbiage. Realism is commendable. The first video is 🔥 🔥 🔥. Special talent, indeed!

I felt electric, jolted, alive. I was a performer all along, and I’d had no idea.

Internal struggles are genuine.

The next video is just as scorching. 🥵

Shopping. Finding his joy.

The parts with Jon’s mom are rather weird. His whole reason for doing porn is dubious as hell. She was a terrible parent.

Full awakening and confession. 🙌🏻

Jon’s realization that he loves blonde guys.

Justin Kane is one hell of a blonde man. Smart and sassy. Love the connection between the two.

But…no sequel?!? What the hell, Seth? We need to see how Jon and Justin end up together.

“How does it feel?”
“Like I should have done it sooner.”

Fascinating dive into gay for pay porn

I'm not sure when exactly I discovered I like gay romance, which led to watching gay porn because I was as clueless as this book's character, Jon. As a woman, I found it bizarre that I was more aroused by gay porn than straight, well, I guess it's whatever my fancy at the time.

ANYWAY, I've read many of Seth King's books and always found them insightful. I didn't expect to learn much by reading romance but it has been very educational on many topics. This one focuses on the gay porn industry, specifically "gay for pay" or "straight gay does gay porn". I enjoyed the 3 viewpoints here: the "straight" guy, the scout/director, and the eventual co-star. I thought the author provided a compelling motivation for gettng in to porn as well as what its like trying make or keep a business going as we move more into independent & essentially self-publishing there are some references to open your mind about the fluid nature of sexuality. I loved how the book unfolded and look forward to the next one to see how the story plays out.

Every Seth King book I read always feels the same and Diary of a Gay Porn Star is no different. It's the sucker punch I never saw coming. It often starts with the dedication, sometimes he throws in a disclaimer and then there's the story. I read and I think I know where this is going. I've read this story before, but themes are finite and I'm okay with that, because it’s all about the journey. And the journey is amazing when Mr. King is the navigator.

Spoiler alert: if you've ever seen the finale of Joss Whedon’s Angel, well there's the sucker punch. Heroes on the precipice of battle. And still it doesn't leave you wanting. I liken Seth King's Diary to that moment. Because seriously whether it's heroes on the precipice of battle or lovers on the edge of tomorrow we don’t really need that next moment to enjoy the story. Though I wouldn’t complain if Mr. King wanted to take us there sooner rather than later.

The blurb pretty much sums up the whole book. Nothing more happens and honestly the sex scenes where boring. The two main characters don't even meet in person but they just talk on the phone towards the end of the book and that's it. The whole thing ends in a cliffhanger right where the blurb ends because it's the 1st book in a series and I didn't know it (was it even stated anywhere?) and I felt tricked. I'll still read the sequel when it will be released hoping for something better but I'll set my expectations lower this time.

This book is hot as hell! Jon is desperate to make money to help his ailing mother and ends up doing gay porn. Reluctant at first he is thriving in his new role. When he has a lengthy conversation with his next co-star new feelings arise but company rules prohibit relationships amongst co-stars.
Not only is this book super sexy but it also gives you an insight look of the gay porn industry. Seth King is one hell of an author that truly brings emotions into every single book.
