The Han Wars #1

Fleet Opposed

Rate this book
The Republic has known peace for nearly a century. Memories of the Han War have faded over time, with the pain and suffering of total war, and sense of shared sacrifice in the face of annihilation, both distant memories. Disagreements among member systems threaten to fracture the cohesiveness of a united Republic, but the Combined Fleet—an aging shadow of what it once was—still stands guard.

Beyond the outer reaches of Republic space, an old enemy prepares to strike. Fueled by the bitterness of defeat, and enflamed by an apparent sneak attack, the Han cultivate the seeds of dissent among those in the Republic sympathetic to their cause. To the Han Bloc, the moment to act has arrived. Once again.

Aboard the Republic cruiser RSS Repulse, Commander Jackson Flynn takes the reigns of command and quickly finds himself in the middle of a war no one expected, a war not only between the Republic and the Han Bloc, but also against the treachery within the Combined Fleet itself. As the fleet crumbles before his eyes during the opening stages of battle, Jackson Flynn knows one thing…

The Han are on the march again, with a vengeance. And his Repulse is on the line.

"Fleet Opposed" is a heavy military science fiction novel, focusing solely on a surprise attack after nearly a century of watchful peace. It's a starfleet battle step by step with action alternating between the commanders of different ships, including opposing ships. There are many characters, all fleshed out realistically. And, the story is all about a great military battle like a giant naval battle.

Loved the book, if you read the 3 novella's and enjoyed them hoping for more like I did then this is exactly what you wanted. Great story telling from multiple characters and view points that really fills it out. Definitely recommend.

Thank you to Chuck Grossart and Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book!

This book is a must for military science fiction fans that enjoy Battlestar Galactica and The Expanse. The author describes a resumption of hostilities from two empires, including an Earth based Republic alliance and a former chain of colonies that formed their own empire, which appears to be a derivative or descendant of Russia. The author cycles between numerous locations or ships over the course of the narrative, some of which are only referenced once or twice, some visited more frequently. The reading comes across almost like a screenplay for a science fiction show, rather than a book, with the reader bouncing from one event to the next. The author names many of the ships and space stations of the Earth's Republic after famous American and British warships, naval figures, or battles from World War II, while the Han Empire's ships uses the names of former leaders of that empire which have a Russian sound/spelling to them.

The action itself is scripted much like one might have scripted Tora! Tora! Tora!, In Harm's Way, or the original Midway movie. There is an opening, which is a series of events indicating hostilities are resuming after a pause of approximately 100 years. The book then follows the procession of a series of engagements, starting with a surprise invasion coupled with a linked chain of sabotage attacks. The reader is treated to the struggles, successes, and failures on both sides of the conflict, with several surprises shared as events unfold. Both sides of the conflict struggle with resistance on the home front and struggles with maintaining order due to the politics on the homefront. This political struggle adds a greater level of uncertainty to the events, thereby making the read that much more exciting.

Of course, because this is the first book of a series, the author could not resist leaving the reader a cliffhanger or two at the end, to entice the reader to anxiously wait for the next book. While it is clearly a complete book in of itself, the story line is not resolved, so I too am anxiously awaiting the next book . Thanks again for a great, compelling book, and I look forward to the rest of the series!

Good read

A good story line. Believable characters from different points of view. The ending came to a conclusion for the book but kept you hanging on for more.

Chuck's books always feel like I'm watching a movie. I've enjoyed his writing style since his first book and always look forward to seeing what he does next.

This is pure military sci-fi and if you enjoy that sort of thing then I recommend this series. Yes, there is a lot of military jargon/acronyms to wrap your head around, but it's a great story. Here in book one, we see the start of a huge space conflict between the Republic and the Han Bloc empires. It all plays out pretty straight forward with an easily predicted twist at the end, but it's a fast paced fun ride to get there.

I'll definitely be reading the rest of the books in the series to see how it all plays out.

This book was intensely action packed as two confederations of worlds join in war. There are finely drawn characters and battle plans by the dozens. Our outnumbered Republic is taken off guard by the reemergence of the Han destroying entire worlds. We see the war from both sides and find all is not as it seems. The characters breath life into this book and make it a great read.
I received this book from Netgalley and wish to thank them, the author and the publishers.
The only thing that detracted from the story was the over use of military terms and abbreviations that I had no idea what many of them meant and added nothing to the story. Overall an interesting and entertaining read.

Onward to Glory

I was looking forward to this series after reading the prequel novellas and Chuck did not disappoint. There are a few typos that my OCD brain caught and there is a lot of military lingo that takes some getting used to (yes I realize it is a military sci-first book), but the story is what makes a book and the story told by Chuck is great. It gives off some serious Cold War vibes which this 70s/80s kid loved. Fast paced story telling and continuous action throughout with a satisfying ending that leaves you ready to dive into the second book in the series.

One of the best I've read

I really enjoyed this book, it has almost all of the pieces I like in a book. Lots of action, many surprises interesting turns of events. About the only thing missing was boy meets girl. Inspire of that, it was very enjoyable.

Chuck Grossart https://www.chuckgrossart.com is the author of more than a dozen novels. Fleet Opposed was published in 2019 and is the first volume in his Han Wars series. This was the 85th book I completed in 2022.

I received an ARC of this book through https://www.netgalley.com with the expectation of delivering a fair and honest review. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own! Due to scenes of violence and mature language, I categorize this novel as R. The primary character is Republic Commander Jackson Flynn.

It has been nearly a century since the Republic was at war with the Han Bloc. Peace has filled the years, and the Republic has grown less vigilant. Without warning, the Han launch a sneak attack on the Republic.

Flynn is Captain of the Republic cruiser RSS Repulse. They witness the destruction of nearly the entire Combine Fleet by the Han. Only the Repulse and a handful of other ships manage to escape the vicious attack.

Flynn and the crew of the Repulse are determined to fight on. Mere survival will not be easy. They must contend with Han warships, as well as former Republic ships now controlled by the Han or their Republic sympathizers.

But all is not what it appears. A quiet conspiracy has been in the works. A conspiracy to bring the Republic and Han back to war.

I enjoyed the 9 hours I spent reading this 403-page science fiction novel. I have also had the opportunity to read one of Grossart’s earlier novels The Phoenix Descent. I enjoyed that novel, but I think this one is much better. The chosen cover is simple but eye-catching. I like it. I give this novel a rating of 4.8 (rounded up to a 5) out of 5.

This was a decently written book that kept me interested. It was very heavy on the ship-to-ship battles with a little bit of character development. The ship battles seem to ignore much of the actual physics of space, in particular the amount of time and energy it takes to maneuver and change directions, gravity effects, etc. However putting that aside the plot and characters kept me going.

I don't care for the stopping point of the story though - my preference is for key story arcs to have an ending in each book... some sense of conclusion. For me the main characters and overarching story arc should compel me to want to read the next book. When a story ends with some of the key subplots still in play, I am less likely to continue to the next book.

Book 1

Book 1 was a fun read and had a few errors throughout. The plot and characters are developed well. The plot is a bit predictable, but still has a few twists. Reading the novellas is helpful and insightful. The characters are likeable enough, but not invested in what happens to them. There are a lot of characters and acronyms for their rank, but once described is easy to follow. I look forward to the next book.

A great start to the series

Well, after reading the three prequels, I was anxiously awaiting this book. I was not disappointed! The tension and anticipation in each battle, the hope and disappointment kept the story going to its surprising final chapters. Thank you, Chuck Grossart, for another great read!

Naval combat in space

This is a good read for fans of mil/sci-fi, particularly of the naval variety. If you take away the space aspect of this novel, it’s a book about Western (NATO) navies vs. the Soviet Union.

A little heavy on the military speak but a solid story

I LOVE Chuck Grossart's writing. This story was very engaging in the beginning but as I have no military background I found it difficult and somewhat confusing to try to keep up during the battle scenes with all the military speak. I think all of that was a bit too heavy for me and I had to scan through it to get to language I could grasp. Still, if you're able to hold on through all of that the story is VERY solid and engaging and well worth the read. Ended on a great cliff hanger and I've already pre-order the next book inn the series and very much looking forward to reading it once it's released. Once again, excellent story telling.
