Shine on: The Remarkable Story of How I Fell Under a Speeding Train, Journeyed to the Afterlife, and the Astonishing Proof I Brought Back with Me

Rate this book
Across thousands of years, people have described one of the most astonishing of all human phenomena: the near-death experience (NDE), the subjective experience of an Afterlife, a place where we apparently survive death. The more powerful the NDE, the more profound the after effects. The ambitious reset their priorities. Atheists change their values. Doctors rethink their beliefs. But what if the after effects of an NDE were undeniable? What if someone suddenly developed the ability to produce high quality paintings of their NDE, a new-found skill that went far beyond the artistic ability they had before? And what if that same person then suddenly acquired the ability to compose classical symphonies after their NDE? And their symphonies were then premiered at sell out orchestral concerts, even though, to this day, they are unable to read or write a single note of musical notation. Wouldn't this be proof that even a cynic would have a hard time explaining? After his NDE, this is exactly what happened to David. And this is his story.

I'd like to believe that there is an afterlife. This is the true account of the author's life after a near death experience. The accident should have killed him. We learn snippets of his life before the accident then how it changed his life forever.

David Ditchfield tells us his experiences, warts and all. I've never heard before of people bringing back a talent after a near death experience. There's more about his life before the accident than after it it does help to let us know exactly what his life was like beforehand. I'm still not sure what I believe after reading this book but I did enjoy reading all about it.

I would like to thank NetGalley, John Hunt Publishing and the authors David Ditchfield and JS Jones for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is a true story about a young man who got pulled under a train and lived to tell the tale. After a teaser at the beginning to leave us where the accident is about to happen, we read about everything going wrong in his life in the lead up to that point and his alcohol dependency which underlies some of his problems.

The accident is described blow by blow, telling us the full traumatic episode as well as a mystical near death experience that happens. This is followed by both physical and psychological treatment, as well as his journey to share the mystical experience with others. He also learns that he's not alone in these experiences.

Having read a fair bit about near death experiences, or NDEs over time, I found it fascinating. David's experiences fit in with many other accounts I've read and to my joy, the book has an introduction by Raymond Moody, one of the primary authors I've read on this subject.

What is different about this case is that David was driven to paint what he saw during his mystical experience, despite not having been an artist before. This was followed by a similar impulse to write music of the classical type when his only previous experience of music was playing a guitar for a punk band. He couldn't read music, but with help he was able to transcribe an entire score for an orchestra and hear the music in his head played live, including procuring a usually hard to get tenor for a vocal passage.

It's an amazing story of an extraordinary near death experience that sent me to the Internet to see the paintings and hear the music. The music is especially moving and can be heard on his own website. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in NDEs.

How I read this: Free ebook copy received through NetGalley

NDE stories are nearly always inspiring, and that's why I couldn't turn down a chance at reading and reviewing this one when I was invited to. The bulk of the book isn't about the NDE - rather, it's about the time before it (the time the author was struggling with life) and the time after it (the time it took to heal - more mentally rather than physically, and more from the effects of his life before rather than just the accident itself.)

It is a strong story for sure. There is a lot on what stages David had to go through during his therapy to get over some of the inhibitions and blocks he had in himself that were stopping him from moving forward.

There is also a tendency in this book to focus on the spiritual side - but by no means in terms of religion - there is nothing of religion here. But there is a belief in the far-reaching consciousness of existence - something bigger than us, something humbling. I believe the author has tried very hard to convey this sense in all his work ever since he had the accident - in his paintings as well as his music, and even this story.

Perhaps the most moving part of this story, when you think about it, is to know that the author lost basically most of the use of his arm after the accident, and yet, the fact that he can barely use it anymore rarely even comes up in the story. It's as if what he gained spiritually from the NDE experience is just so much more important to his life than the fact that he has been permanently physically affected and can't really live the way he did before. With most accident stories, you will hear a lot about how hard it was to get over the new disability, the pain and the sudden impossibility to do things that came naturally and easily before the accident, as well as how the healing went. But in this book, this is mentioned so little that you almost forget what he's gone through physically (which I can imagine must've been an ordeal). That really stood out for me - but only after I finished the book did I realize how odd it was not to have heard more about it, when it so clearly makes up a lot of the author's life after his accident. It only goes to show how much he must've gained from his spiritual experience and how its meaning is bigger to him than the ways he is now more physically challenged than he was before. (This is just my take on it though, it might be that the author had other reasons for not sharing it.)

At the end of the book there is an interview with his friends and relatives and what they think about what happened to David. That was also interesting to read. David also has a website where you can listen to his symphony and see some of his paintings - it really brings his story together and sort of brings it from just the pages of the book into our own reality.

It is a wild, inspiring and unusual story to say the least. Also written in a captivating way, it was a good read and if you're into reading about soul-searching and life-changing events, you should read it.

Triggers

I must warn that the first third of the book is very upsetting. David is experiencing a real breaking point in his life where things just fall apart, and that's even before his accident. It's really sad. And as for the accident... I don't know when I became this emotionally frail wreck that cries even at books, apparently (not even movies anymore!), but I cried at the part where David gets crushed under the train. I mean, I knew it was coming, that's what the whole book is about, and I knew he survives - but I cried, and it wasn't just a few tears (yeah, okay, I wept.) It was just so heart-breaking and terrifying. Not to mention morbid and gory (he had a terrible wound). While it may be worth reading for what comes after, if you are sensitive to this kind of thing then you should know that it's really quite tough to stomach. The therapy that David goes through was also not very easy to read and could prove triggering to some people - he suffers a lot of anxiety and feelings of inadequacy, inferiority (also he feels very bad about having dyslexia). I certainly got triggered by some of it myself and I can see others finding it tough to relive. So while the book is inspiring and humbling, it's also really, really hard to read if you're not in a good place right now, so keep these triggers in mind.

I thank the publisher for giving me a free copy of the ebook in exchange to my honest review. This has not affected my opinion.

Thank you Netgalley for an e-arc. All opinions are my own.

This had so much substance; although I went in to learn about the near death experience, I was left really caring about our author and his life and how this terrifying event shifted his attitude to life. David was an amazing storyteller. He made his life worth learning about and I was interested throughout the whole account.

I got emotional for him when he was pleading to be taken away from the harm that was his near death experience and although I knew overall he'd be okay, I was really panicking for him!

The art he produced was beautiful! As was the music he wrote. Absolutely breath taking and made me feel so at peace. What an amazing achievement, especially having never done anything like that before. I truly believe in what he experienced.

I liked the little interview part at the end.

Pick it up, give it a go and enjoy! >(^_^)<

I have never read or heard of anything like this before reading this book. I have a passing interest in near death experiences (NDE), but have never really focused on them. This book may have changed all that. This is the story of David Ditchfield and his NDE and how it changed/affected him. The book provides a lot of information about his life prior to the experience, so the reader can better understand where David is coming from. It allows on to see how thing were and how they changed after the NDE. I am still not sure about how or if I believe this, but it was a fascinating story to read—and I tend to think it is true (though, as I said, I am not fully convinced). There is some of the spirituality transformation he experienced mixed in with the physical, real-life stuff, which made it more interesting and believable. One thing I noted is that there was not much about his experience in higher realms, which most of the NDE books or articles I have read tend to focus on. Instead, the book focuses on his life and how it changed after his NDE. One reviewer compared it to diary, which is a good description. As I said, the jury in me is still out about what to believe/accept, but this book had brought me further along. It is different, and can probably interest anyone looking for something a bit different. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.

Shine On is a quick and compelling read. Though the author's NDE is the centerpiece of the book, very few pages are devoted to his experience in the higher realms. Instead, the book takes us on David's journey of transformation, contrasting his life before the accident with the creativity, growth and evolution that came after. It's a satisfying narrative that reads a lot like a diary. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance reading copy.

This book is advertised as a near death experience. David Ditchfield was dragged under a train in England. The train was stopped and he was dropped onto the tracks. He suffered many injuries and was taken to hospital where he had a NDE.

This book tells about events leading up to the accident, the accident itself, and the strange changes that happened to him afterwards. I felt far too much time was spent on his life before the accident.
I have read of many people gaining unknown talents after such an experience and Mr. Ditchfield's gains unbefore unknown talents in music and art.

I am a skeptic and really don't know what to think of all of this except that I doubt that he remembers verbatim many of the conversations related in the book. If this had been advertised as a novel, I'd have given it a much higher rating. But the dialogue is just a bit too much for me to accept.

I loved this book on many levels, from the style of writing through to the shared spiritual insights. It is easy to think you are reading a novel due to the flow of the story, but we are reminded throughout of the true life journey that David experienced.

David Ditchfield, a dreamer lured by the appeal of finding success in the big city, soon finds that London is not the mecca he was hoping for. He is not able to find enough work to cover the extortionate effects of living in the capital, falling ever further into debt. He hopes to impress his rich girlfriend Emily with his competencies, but inevitably meets with still further humiliation. He begins to slide further into drinking to numb the pain.

Then on one fateful day, he is nearly killed once a train pulls out of a station, with his coat caught between the doors. He is pulled under the train's wheels.

However, David experiences a powerful NDE, which is to sustain him during a slow recovery towards functionality. His therapist is skeptical, but does recognise that something extraordinary is at work in her patient's life.

David learns to paint as well as to compose classical music. He finds the inner strength to give up alcohol. Somehow., everything just falls into place as he pursues thiy new, creative path.

Spiritualists and mediums crop up aplenty in this autobiography, but this story does manage not to descend into facile New Age woo-woo. The account of David's descent into depression and alcoholism, the recognition of the sense of failure that fuelled it is gritty enough, and do is the robust admonition from his therapist, that whilst alive, facing the darkness is the only way to become truly rounded.

The real test for David Ditchfield lies beyond his hard-earned new success. He is to recognise that art for art's sake has its own special thorns and traps, whilst over and beyond that, there is also the need to find true love.

This then is a story full of feel-good factors for those who may suspect that tbay are looking for fulfilment in all the wrong places. Definitely a worthwhile and edifying read, even for those who, like David's therapist, maybe sceptical of the near-death experience, but who can recognise how it might be capable of changing someone for the better.

Two reviews from me - all for the price of one.
The writing of J S Jones Phd gets a 4.5 from me which I would have rounded to 5 - my only gripe is the use of American spellings throughout for a story set in England, about someone from Blackpool and which takes place in mostly London and St Ives. In addition the annoying use of "sat" when "sitting" is less jarring - this style throughout kept jolting me from a wonderful narrative in every other respect. Great dialogue, rhythm, pace, description and a compelling read - and I look forward to the next book from this writer.

The story of David Ditchfield - had it been presented as fiction - would also get a 4.5 but it got a 3.6 rounded to 4 as I felt, despite all the eulogies, that it is actually quite a weak example of the NDE. Ghastly accident and a remarkable recovery but for someone who played guitar before to write a classical score is hardly the most dynamic change of circumstances and isn't the "astonishing proof" of an after-life trumpeted on the cover. The story is so pat. Alcoholic recovery - check. Two likeable mates - check. Love interest - check. Feelings of low self-esteem - check. All the material that make for a jolly British film made by Richard Curtis with Russell Tovey in the lead role.
I was given the book as a gift for Christmas following a conversation about life after death but this adds hardly anything to the debate.
As for unconditional love - that being what the authors suggest is waiting for us all - I am not sure that this is a suitable portal for mass murderers and the like. Unconvincing but a well-penned novel.

A big thank you to the publisher for gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! I'm always so thankful to have these opportunities!

Fair warning, that the first chapter of the book can be a little intense for those of you with a more delicate disposition, honestly the first third or so of the book is a little intense! I will admit I am one of those folks who got a little wobbly with the reading of this - take care if you're an empath or are triggered by the reliving of difficult memories or mental health situations!

This book was a very interesting, fast-paced read for me. The author's voice is compelling, to me it felt like a long conversation with a friend. The vocabulary casual although the topic anything but.

I am giving this four Triquetras instead of five as I had hoped there would be a bit more information on the Afterlife. That part of the book seemed to be very quick, and while I'm happy to read about David's transformation and his journey, I was under the impression that we would be getting a little more information.

This book will be for anyone who loves reading about NDE's, who wants a fascinating, true-story read. I believe this will be excellent summer reading for anyone who has an afternoon to devote to this fantastic book, or for someone who is looking for the "sign" that life will get better. David reminds me of the arrow - you have to be pulled back and the bow stretched to the limit before the arrow can go whirling full force into the future.

This is a beautiful book.
I enjoyed the hooks at the end of each chapter enticing me to read the next one.

I found it beautiful to read of someone following guidance so profoundly that they would paint when they haven’t painted and write music when they never written music before.

I also appreciated the naming of insecurities, how that journey progressed to one of greater openness and confidence, and how it impacted David’s ability to be in relationship.

So I enjoyed both the ‘ordinary’ and the ‘extraordinary’ in David’s story.

I have had many spiritual profound spiritual experiences in my life, none of them NDE’s but many of them triggered by living with severe illness combined with spiritual practice. Much of David’s description of the afterlife connected me with moments I have had in this life of falling into the present moment and receiving unconditional love.

I feel very unpreoccupied with the afterlife. Reading the book helped me to ponder on why that is.
Perhaps because when I have experiences of an all embracing unconditional love it’s clear to me that this is reality, and the rest is illusion. I therefore have a confidence that reality will continue.

It makes sense to me though that for many people, David’s revelation will make a big difference.
Bless you David for a wonderful book. Bless you in your life.

As a reader I want to be moved by the characters in a book but that doesn't happen too often. But this book definitely did that. I could see this book as if it were a wonderful movie. As corny as this sounds I do think the "Light" the author experienced seeped into me as I read and pulled emotions forth. It was lovely to read and even more so because it is a true story. Thank you David and J.S. Jones as well. This is a gift to read!
Having read this incredible story in one day, I immediately went to the internet to hear David's music. As the first notes of his first movement of Divine Light the tears began to roll down my cheeks. I'm not musical myself and don't understand any of the process except to say David's music sparked something deeply in me. I could literally FEEL the love he describes.

Shine On

Gives profound spiritual truth that at the point of death there is nothing to fear because we are welcomed with love and healing on the other side, and how those who experienced an NDE come back with overwhelming desire to express the beauty of the other side, in various art forms. The author hit the rock bottom and from there learned how to trust the subtle whispers of inspiration by Spirit and his trust orchestrated his channeling of beauty into this world and going through his personal gradual and profound healing from self doubt and into self acceptance and self love.

I have a library of books about NDE - it's a subject I've been fascinated by for over a decade - but I've never read a book like this before. It gives an extraordinary insight into an area of NDE which is rarely explored - the gifts that people can bring back with them from the afterlife. I'd heard about this phenomenon, but never read about it in such detail as in this wonderful book. It's also an intimate and heartwarming account of one man's struggle against adversity and his victory against all the odds. With its message of hope and love, it really is a book for our times.

As far as the actual NDE experience goes, David's story is good. But the truly amazing aspect of his story is the transformation after his NDE, The writing lets us see David in a before and after format that, to me was honest and unafraid to show someone just being human. Its a short book that takes no time to read, but once you have finished it, don't just put it aside. Take a moment to visit the "Soundcloud" web page to LISTEN to (for free) "The Divine Light" and then reflect on the story. Or better yet have a look at his paintings on his web page as well.

Magical and Moving
Shine On was delivered yesterday, I finished reading it today. This is probably my favourite book on NDE's of all time. A well written, enthralling story which had me laughing and crying with the author. I couldn't put it down...The most remarkable piece of synchronicity occurred as I was reading; part of David's journey mirrored my own, and it was just what I needed to hear at this time. Many thanks indeed David for sharing your story which brought me closer to my own light.

A moving, inspiring and detailed read of how death can stoke a dying man even though he's breathing. It's a story full of hope, mysticism and reflection that leads you to wonder what direction you are giving your life.

A very interesting story. I have no doubt David had a truly fascinating experience and tried to express it through art and music. There seem to be a lot of far fetched coincidences in his story, are they true? Only he knows. There is no doubt he was exposed through his brother to classical music and was a musician himself so was his music influenced by a god like presence? In my view, probably not. Well worth a read though.

Just finished reading Shine on and absolutely loved it! Truly inspiring story. I’m incredibly spiritual and used to read tarot and sit in a circle, but it’s been a while. This has renewed my interest in returning to something that is important to me. I have connected with people that surprised me in sharing this faith, but this book has reminded me that we are all connected by something bigger than we can explain. Thank you 🙏🏼

Shine On is a beautiful book filled with the authors journey of self discovery prompted by a near- death experience when he was involved in a train accident. He goes through snippets of his life leading up to his nde and how his life was forever changed afterward. Very motivating and inspiring for anyone who thought their lives couldn't get better, or that life after death is non existent.

This is a fascinating read regardless of your religious beliefs. This mans life changed so much after his accident that should have killed him and he not only became sober at last but also composed a piece of classical music a with no musical experience previously. His accident totally transformed his life.

David’s story is remarkable to say the least. In itself it puts this book in the “must read category”. Yet what makes this book even better is the way in which the story is told. Put simply, I found this book hard to put down. When it ended, I wanted more. What could be better than that?

David was a guest on my podcast, the Radiate Wellness Podcast, and he is lovely. He tells his story in such an earnest way. In the book, it lays out as it might over dinner: telling a bit, going back for context, telling more, going back to cover more context. His story is simply amazing.
