The ashes have fallen and the dust clears to a startling discovery....

Beyond the reach of the nuclear infernos, the masterminds survived and continue their assault on outposts across the Allied States. Timothy Temper and Sergeant Ruckley narrowly escaped one of those attacks. On the run from hostile forces, they fight to get an urgent message to command-the monsters aren't the only threat. Their human allies have a nuclear weapon.

Refusing to hide underground, President Jan Ringgold heads to New York. Doctor Kate Lovato and her team are there working to infiltrate and sabotage enemy communications. To buy them time, S.M. Fischer and his engineers deploy technology to detect incoming Variant attacks. But they can't hold the monsters for much longer.

Deep in enemy territory, Master Sergeant Fitzpatrick and Captain Beckham discover the terrifying truth behind the New Gods and a plan even more nefarious than eliminating the human race. This time, the future depends not just on the survival of Team Ghost, but their ability to convince new allies to join the fight before it's too late.

The s**t keeps hitting the fan

I've been reading the Extinction Cycle series since the very beginning. People thought they were finally rebuilding their lives only to be hit eight years later by Variants and their human collaborators in the spin-off of the Cycle series called the Dark Ages books.

This is the third book in the spin-off and things aren't looking any better for the human survivors. In fact, in this book, they have to deal with a whole new deadly danger.

Kate and Reed and Team Ghost are at the forefront of the fighting but are they really making a difference? Will mankind as we know it finally be conquered?

Our heroes are doing the best they can to prevent being overtaken and destroyed.

This is another wonderful collaboration between authors Nick Smith and Tony Melchiorri. Seamless writing and non-stop action keep this a true page turner.

I received this Advanced Reading Copy from the authors in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.

Another fantastic book by Nicholas Sansbury Smith! I hate that I started this series a little late, but it gave me the advantage of listening to them back to back. His books are so good that I enjoy listening to them back to back. Now I'm all caught up and have to play the waiting game like everyone else lol. As this series gets better and better, things are looking worse for humanity. The variants now have a newer and more dangerous monster. Kate, Beckham, and Team Ghost have to put themselves at risk everyday to try and save humanity. I can't wait for book 4! Great narration by R.C. Bray.

Side note... One of the things I love about Nick's books is the emotions I feel as I listen to them. I can't give him all the credit though. Bray does a great job expressing what the characters are feeling. This book got me good and made me tear up a little. I don't tear up over sad stories, but I do get teary when it involves soldiers. I'm an Army veteran myself. I never lost a friend in combat that I know of, but it still gets me every time. So thank you Nick for writing such great stories full of excitement, action, and emotion. And thank you Bray for being one of the best narrator's! You two make an excellent team!

Continuing the action from the previous novel, this story throws twist after turn in the readers direction. The authors do a wonderful job creating unsurvivable situations for the characters that someone manage to survive even after nail biting battles. The downside of this is the feeling of getting broadsided when a character does die. This third book in the series is riddled with death, but it also is filled with stories of survival against all odds, proving how immortally strong some of the characters are. The story also shows how cowardly and weak some of the enemy are.
The book ended on a fairly good note in what might be considered a temporary victory. The war just beginning, but their first victory towards a final win.

This series is fun to listen to what could be better than an all out war against super soldier zombies. I would like to say I like the series more but I still struggle with the character work. I realize that the author appears to want everyone to be tough and strong and unaffected by loss but I would like the characters to feel their losses those things make for a deeper story. I am excited to see how the series ends in this book the humans are making good headway and hopefully they can defeat their enemies but they thought that last time so who knows. Also I think that if America posed that much of a threat to the rest of the world the world would just use their nucellar weapons and blow the country away.

I really and truly don't know what to say about this book that will do it justice!! When I first started the Extinction Cycle books, I never expected to love them as much as I did, and when the author said that there would be more in the series I thought he wouldn't be able to surpass the first ones, but I was wrong. This series is just as amazing!!!

Extinction Ashes sees everyone trying to find answers as to what is happening with the variants, the webbing and the collaborators. Fitz and Team Ghost are struggling to survive whilst being cut off from command. Kate is trying to get answers as to what the webbing is and what is happening the Variants. Beckham is just trying to keep Kate and everyone safe when things are getting worse. It is honestly one of the most intense books I've read in a long while!!! The plot goes from one thing to another and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

Once again these authors shine with the way they can write their characters. Kate, Beckham, Horn and Fitz have become my favourites. But I've also become attached to Fischer. He has quickly become a favourite too. This book had my heart in my mouth multiple times because the characters are put through the wringer. Every character grows and evolves throughout the story and it makes the whole book phenomenal. You can't help but become involved in their lives, you can't help but hurt when they hurt and feel every emotion along with them. This for me is what makes the book, and indeed the whole series, one of the best out there!!

There is a lot I want to say about the book, certain parts and certain characters, but it would spoil so much, so all I'll say is if you want a book that will knock your socks off, then this is the one. It's action packed, thrilling, breath taking, gripping and an absolute phenomenal read. I can't wait for the next one to see what happens!!!

Another action packed book in the Extinction Cycle Dark Ages series. Our beloved characters from past books and series are back, still trying to save the Allied States from destruction and getting knocked down at every turn. Whether it be collaborators, variants, Alphas, masterminds, bats or Chimeras, there is danger and death at every turn. So much so that it's a miracle anyone survives and it's downright depressing (one of two gripes of mine). The other is that there are so many plot lines and characters that it's hard to keep track of - near the end, Nick says he doesn't see Beckham and then all of a sudden Beckham says something. I may have been reading too fast but I was confused for a minute. Looking forward to the next and hoping that the heroes that did survive will live through another book.

Following the attack on Manchester, we rejoin the story with Beckham and his family and friends in the air, hoping for a safe landing somewhere. That turns out to be the beleaguered New York outpost and the brave men and women fighting to protect their own.

I found this book the darkest of the series this far, and as a consequence it was a difficult read. But this is all good, as I'm heavily invested in the characters, so it makes for challenging reading when they're going through tough times. At one point I almost gave up hope, but then I learned that there's another book to come, so that perked me up a bit.

It was really good to spend more time with Team Ghost and the rest of the characters between the pages of this book. The ending was satisfactory in terms of some issues being resolved, and I look forward to the next book very much.

Another great read in the Extinction series. The characters are so highly developed they have taken on a life of their own. The monsters continue to evolve into creatures even more horrifying than you can imagine. This is an excellent book in a series that combines sci-fi and horror, in a dystopian world. This book has it all. Read it. I was given an advanced reader copy of this book in return for an honest review

Scary and thriilling

These stories are a scary read. Just the idea if humans evolving into monsters is a nightmare idea. It seems the humans are putting up a good fight I hope they win

I'm marking this one down as 5 stars because I can't just keep 4 1/2-ing everything to death. The rating IS well-deserved mind you as this book has it all in terms of the NSS "brand" but I'll confess I'm not quite as.... addicted?... to the story-line of this second set of books as I was to the first. Then again, my own 'guess' as to what the hell was REALLY going on didn't pan out - may I just add a well-earned "wow" here - but hey, I still have one tome to go.

Having said that, I will say that a lot of my input about this not being up to the first series is due to a combined LACK of hope reading these books (how are any "humans" left alive?) added to a severe case of real-life winter+pandemic depression. The sun is setting now here around 6 pm and in a few days that'll mean it sets before 5 pm... and then we'll change the dogdamn clocks. Plus this election cycle and how it is bringing out so many 'collaborators' out of the sewers of our nation just has me at rock bottom. So the sheer desperation of our players weighs heavily on my soul with each and every page. Sure, what Kate and Reed and Tank and all the other dwarves are doing to save the day is great but good golly, what the actual fireballs people. Still, that's what NSS does to you. You get dragged in (or under) and you begin to care and then boom, you're burying a few thousand people.

There's really little left to be said. If you've been to NYC, this book will scare the bejeebus out of you. If you've been in a sailboat and hated that experience as much as I did because you just know something is lurking below you, this book will (see above). It's not a criticsm by an stretch of the imagination, but this is just one of those series that makes you think you're going to puke out last week's breakfast. If you can't handle horror or despair or any of the feelings that 2020 has wrought in all of us, well, you'd probably do better to stay away from this set and just pick up the latest Winnie the Pooh release. It is both the gift and the curse of loving NSS's work. And these books have some of the darkness from ALL of Smith's best, especially "Hell Divers" and "Trackers". My own advice then for facing the darkness within? Deal with it.

On to book 4. At least I'm losing weight... and hair...

Another Stellar Book

NSS and Melchiorri did it again with Extinction Ashes. This is the third book in the Extinction Cycle: Dark Age series and it was a doozy. The action starts pretty much right away and we’re thrown into the world of variants and collaborators and those who are fighting to bring them down.

As with every other book I’ve listened to by these authors – this one really brings the emotion. There are scenes when people don’t make it and scenes when things aren’t going the soldiers way – and you feel it. Nick and Anthony are able to add this twinge of “what if” to every scenario and it’s scary.

Reading this while the Coronavirus/COVID-19 is spreading was surreal. It’s scary when they talk about being safe every night and just the original spread. I completely understand that the man-made virus is this series is different, but there are still parallels. Honestly, there was a point in the book that Nick’s former job seemed to come out. I was driving when I got to that point or I would have bookmarked it so I could find the part and highlight it, but I didn’t get the chance.

Throw in another great performance by R.C. Bray and this is a fantastic book in a great series. One that I’ve enjoyed from beginning to end. One that I have a hard time putting down once I pick it up. I hope that they continue to write more books in this series but I don’t know what the future holds.

Overall, I loved this book. I thought it was one of the best in the series because it dealt with more human emotions than the other two. The other two books involve more of the masterminds and the webbing, where this book seemed to dabble in almost the aftermath (not there yet) but the “okay, now what” feelings that you get once things seem to have settled down (though I say settle down with a huge grain of salt since they weren’t really calm).

The story picks up right where we left off from volume two. The communication “decoder” Dr. Lavato was working on was looking good in the lab but turned out to be a different animal altogether in the field. Oh well, the good doctor can’t always be right. It’s going to take more pokes and tweaks to try to get her idea working. On another front, Fisher and General Cornelius are working on plan B as well regarding the oil exploration method to identify Variant movement underground including their tunnels. Way back when the Great War began, a viral agent known as VX99 was set loose on the world. It was designed to create a genetically-altered super-soldier. Horrifying creatures other than the Variants are appearing on the battlefield. Is VX99 at large again, or is something else going on? I heard the term “Chimera” being whispered about. Do y’all know what that is? No matter the crisis or abomination the Allied States overcome, there is always something new and terrifying around the corner. Men and supplies are becoming scarce. Allied States allies appear to be content to sit back and see how the situation turns out. Variants, Alphas, genetically-altered creatures, Masterminds, The Master, and the collaborators. There’s no end to the monstrosities joining the fight. The action is fast and tense. It grabs hold of you and doesn’t let go, offering a short break in between to let you catch your breath.

Intensity of emotions.

Things to know: This is the third book in the second "season" of the Extinction Cycle series. In my humble opinion, it helps to have read the first "season" and the first two books of the second season to understand the background and where the main characters are coming from. There is violence and adult language throughout.

The country that Beckham and Horn love is under attack. The lives of their friends and family are at constant risk. Of course, the president has an assignment for them. "All it takes is all you got." as Fitz would tell them. Will that be enough?

While reading this story and seeing all of what these people (they are more people than characters to me at this point) have been going through, I wonder how many real life people would be able to do what they are doing. How much grit is left in the world? Would I make it as far as they have, dealing with what they have to deal with to stay alive. So far, the worldwide pandemic has nothing on what happens in this book... just saying.

There were times in this book where I wanted to go outside and scream, "Can the humans just catch a freaking break?!?!?!?!?".
Again, Sansbury Smith and Melchiorri have masterfully written a heckuva book. We move seamlessly between different groups of people in different locations doing different things which kept me abreast of all of the action.
This is the last book of this series and I guarantee that I will mourn the end of these stories. The main characters seem like friends and I keep rooting for them (and for a large part, they come through for me).
The plot(s) of this book are very believable and held my interest. I can't recommend these books more than I already have. Anyone who doesn't read this series is seriously missing out. I consider myself lucky that I happened upon these books.

Made my blood boil

There is so much bravery and decency presented by the survivors. And so much cruelty and evil achieved by the collaborators and monsters. I feel the balance of justice is not level. I've been thinking of horrible ways to torture these filthy scum who want to enslave humanity. Now and then they get theirs, but I want MORE. More vengeance, and retribution. I want them to die screaming in front of their families. That's the only downside to this exceptional series. The story is top notch and the characters are like family. Maybe it's just me. Check it out, and judge for yourself

Excellent Action Series Continues🌟

I was so excited to see there will be at least one more installment in this series. I have read all of Mr. Smith's books, and every one is excellent. Quality writing with interesting well developed characters combine with an exciting storyline to create an excellent action series.

This one has been the most action-packed of the series so far, and we can see where the finale is headed. All the storylines have been good, and we can see them all coming together now. This, along with the original Extinction series, has been a lot of fun, especially for fans of post-apocalyptic fiction. Looking forward to starting book 4, the final book in the series.

this is one of the most intense book so far, remind me of the book 5 if Hell Divers and extinction aftermath. In addition to those devastating monstery scene, as a cancer researcher myself, i love all the science behind each decision. really felt for Kate’s sacrificing action to connect with the webbing. also, so many smart things coming from Dohi, i like him a lot.

I don't want to give the story elements away, so I'll keep this review brief. What I'm loving about the later books in the series is that the story keeps evolving in interesting and credible ways. I've seen many series where a story evolves in a way that loses me the reader.

This book was a fun read and had a few errors. The plot and characters have developed well. The characters have a somewhat new enemy to contend with and have lost others in the process. The overall is a fun read, but could have been better.

I’m rarely invested in characters the way I’m invested in those included in this series. Complex, compelling, weaved into a narrative that’s gripping and well constructed.

Another Good Book in this Series

This was another good book in this series. I generally really enjoy the story but sometimes am frustrated by the characters poor decision making processes. However, i am looking forward to the next book in the series.
