Cosmic Fairy Tales

Jackie and the Giant

Rate this book
He's big and green and looking for a mate...

Jackie works as hard as she can to provide for her younger sister, but they’re barely surviving. When she comes home to find that her sister has traded their COW (Comestible Organic Wafer machine) to an alien trader in return for a worthless bean, she is both worried and hurt. She thought she could trust the intriguing male hidden behind the forbidding armor.

When a giant beanstalk grows overnight, Jackie is desperate enough to climb to the top and demand the return of her COW. Instead, she finds a whole new world - and a very large surprise. Beneath the armor is a massive alien who seems to be as much plant as man.

Cormac is enchanted by the little human female who trades with him each quarter and makes his sap rise. He devises a plan to bring her into his domain, even though he knows he may not be able to keep her. But now that she’s here, how can he let her go?

A big green alien, a feisty heroine, an evil storekeeper, and some helpful plants - this sweet and steamy fairy tale is not the story you remember! (Intended for mature audiences only!)

3.5 stars -- Bonus points for creative use of stamen within a plant based alien. My oh my. Overall, a cute, fun retelling of the fairy tale in a frontier space setting. I thought the stuff with the sister was a little too blatant & went on far too long, but other than that, this was very enjoyable

A sweet, sexy twist on the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale where Jackie gets a VERY happy ending, if you know what I mean. HA! Really, though, both Jackie and Cormac end up in their happy place and that's what I'm here for, so I am pleased.

ANYWAY. So Jackie and her sister are doing their thing on their homestead (to be honest, Jackie's doing what she needs to do to keep them alive while Bella is...kind being an entitled little sponge of a sister, but so it goes, right?) when things take a turn. In her desperation, Jackie does the unthinkable and climbs up the beanstalk that grew overnight and ends up in an alien landscape with one sexy hunk of and alien.

On his end, Cormac has enjoyed the few hours he gets to spend with Jackie every few months on market day and desperately wants to find a way to give her everything she needs to thrive and survive. While he knows chances are slim she'll choose him, he goes all in when she makes the choice to climb to his realm and THINGS HAPPEN. Sexy things. Sexy things that both Jackie and Cormac enjoy immensely.

NICE.

We have a sexy fairy tales come to life, a kind-hearted heroine, an honorable hero, a sister who did NOT get her just desserts (but she did get stuck with that jerkface, so maybe she did get them after all), and a very happily ever after for most everyone involved. GOOD TIMES!

Unique fairytale retelling! 4.5 stars

I have never read a Jack and the Beanstalk retelling before which is why this one attracted my attention so much. Add in a hot green alien and a sci-fi element, and I was hooked the entire way through. I really liked Jackie and Cormac as MCs; they had distinct voices and were great to follow along. Jackie's sister Bella was annoying af and just such a spoiled brat; she annoyed the crap out of me.

Overall, this was such an enjoyable read for me!! I will definitely be checking out the rest of the books from this series and other books from this author. Definitely worth the read!

This fairy-tale retelling introduces us to a hot green alien - Cormac and human Jackie. Jackie is determined to ensure she and especially her little sister are not crushed by life on their dusty mining planet, by working and working as well as sacrificing Jackie's kept them alive, her sister fed (and fed) and free from debt. But when her sister sells their food replicator for a magic bean she is aghast until it grows. Determined to get back what her sister sold she hightails it up the beanstalk.

Cormac lives in the green clouds that float over the planet Jackie lives on, somewhat lonely he is entranced by Jackie. He's always looked forward to the quarterly Market Day where he gets to see Jackie, and listen to her speak. Certain rules stop him from speaking to her, but Cormac has been working on a plan that will bring her to him, and when he has her he is determined to show her she deserves better than the endless hard work and stress she faces on the surface of the dusty planet.

Jackie's sister was a seriously spoilt and a self-obsessed brat - a character I couldn't help but dislike.

Overall a enjoyable light read, a good start to a weekend where I plan to forget work until Monday and juts enjoy a book or three and watch terrible tv as I relax with the family.

What a creative story!

I enjoyed this book a lot and pretty much devoured it. The story was interesting and unique which is something I appreciate a lot. I’ve never read an alien romance with a H that has some plant-like attributes.

While the H was a beta H, he was sweet and likable and never abused the h. There are no triggers and it’s not a dark story. If you enjoy alien romance and are looking for something with a sweet H, open door sexy times and an original story, you should give this one a try.

Jackie and the Giant reads like most sci-fi romances, in a good way. I enjoyed the differences and unique qualities the author used to create an original story, obviously very loosely based on Jack and the Beanstalk. The book has quite a few steamy moments and all you tentacle porn fans will be pleased. In many ways this was an enjoyable read for me, nothing heavy and a fairly quick read. However. There is one HUGE glaring issue with this book and to put it bluntly; Jackie is a naive, ignorant doormat who even by the end continues to live in fantasyland. I really had hopes this chick would have a come to Jesus moment, even in the last 2% of the book. Alas, I did not get my wish and the heroine continues to be as dense as a brick. So much so that it kinda spoils the end for me. Aside from her I enjoyed the narrative as well as her sweet green mate Cormac.

2.5

Jackie and Cormac were very sweet together. Jackie is a poor human woman living with her little sister and doing all the work to support them. Her sister is frivolous and trades away something they need for a magic bean.
From the beginning of the book I was a bit put off by the focus on pale skin being beautiful (although I think the author may have been trying to say that the MCs skin was sun damaged, not that darker skin was bad). I also didn’t like the slut and fat shaming vibes. At all. Those messages took away from the positive messaging.

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: poverty

Very creative!

This had to be the most creative retelling of this story I’ve ever read. (And also the naughtiest 😝). I enjoyed reading it and am moving on to the next in the series.

3½⭐︎ rounded down.

An interesting take on a classic fairy tale, Jackie and the Giant adds a touch of sci-fi into the mix with novel approaches to elements of the original story.

On a red dusty planet colonized by humanity, Jackie and her sister are barely making ends meet. Well, Jackie is anyway. Spending most of her time at the mining claim their parents' owned, Jackie makes their meager existence possible while waiting on the quarterly market day where she can sell the crystals for a better price than to the fat cat in town who is ripping everyone off and indenturing them to him. Market day is her favorite day, it's when she gets to see her hulking alien and indulge in a cup of tea and his silent company, as has been their routine for five years now.

Cormac lives in the green clouds that float over the planet, and he has been working on a plan for several years. He looks forward to the quarterly Market Day where he gets to see Jackie, who will then hang around after to drink tea and tell him about her life. Due to circumstances necessary to be on the surface, Cormac can never speak with her, but that's about to change: Jackie is his, and he's going to bring her up to him where she belongs, and she will never be mistreated or unappreciated ever again.

When Jackie misses Market Day, and Bella sells their COW to Cormac for a magic bean, Jackie is furious and tosses the stupid thing out the window. In the morning, there's a gigantic bean stalk growing up into the clouds, and that's where her adventure begins.

So why the round down? As cute as Jackie and Cormac are together, the plot had some issues in the conflict department. There were some seeds planted about a Big Baddie that never came to fruition and left to wither on the vine. (How many plant metaphors can I mix into one sentence?) The conflict in the end that happened instead was a choice that made me roll my eyes and the choice to round down rather than up.

That aside, it's hard to go wrong with anything Ms. Phillips writes. If you're looking for a cute story with a lot of steam, she'll hit the spot every time. And you know you're curious about what a plant man is packing. ;)

It was okay. Hard to fully enjoy though when Jackie was too painfully oblivious of her sister's true behavior. Plot was predictable. Overall an average read. Honey Phillips writes well anyways, so it was a smooth journey.

A wonderful spin on an old story

I really enjoy books by Honey Phillips !! Her characters are well thought out and researched. U can tell all the love that goes into each and every word !!
In this story we meet Jackie . Her and her younger sister are basically orphans on a planet that is dry and arid. They survive by Jackie mining the plot of land her father bought for crystals. These crystals are bought by Alien traders on trading day , which happens once a month or so. There is one particular Alien ( they are Huge , with two sets of arms !! ) that Jackie sees as friendly. He doesn't talk , but he listens to her , she can tell by the look on his eyes. He also pays her fair credits, and that is much better then her selling her crystals to the local rich guy in town . Who ' s rich son , is after Jackie to marry him. Jackie has zero attraction for him, but he keeps at her.
In this particular day , she is running late from the mines and her ol d cart breaks down. So she is Very late getting to the trading day area.
But she finds that "her " Alien is still there waiting. Having Nothing to show for her hard work, and refusing "charity " , Jackie is wondering how her and her sister will survive until the next trading day .......
When she gets to the ramshackle building she calls home , she finds that her poor , sick , frail sister Bella , has sold their only source of food , the Comestible Organic Wafer machine ( Cow- get it - hahaha ) for a Bean, that is supposed to get both of them every thing they ever wanted.

Cormac is an Alien to that comes in trading day to trade with young Jackie . Even though he can not talk to her , he understands far more then she does. She makes his sap rise and he wants to get to know her better. But he can not , unless she freely comes to him. .....
But will she ???
What happens next is a lovely retelling of her climbing the beanstalk, and the wonders she finds there !!!
This is a wonderful story and I look forward to more stories from Honey Phillips !!!!!

I’m loving these Cosmic Fairy Tales. You’ve got Jackie, the giant, a beanstalk, a magic bean and even cow and harp. But from there the story goes beyond the original tale. A hardworking Jackie will always try her best for her sister and herself. But things aren’t working out. But one little bean will change her options. The giant is so much more and definitely sees something he wants when it comes to Jackie. I love the mix of fairytale and sci-fi. And the romance is sweet but gets pretty hot at times too. An amazing tale that isn’t for the kids.

A fantastic sci fi romance that is a retelling of the classic James and the beanstalk.

My review is a simple one because this is a wonderful story. From start to finish I was inthralled I loved the sci fi spin on this tale and the author did such a fantastic job.

Cormac was a wonderful character. His back story was both original and interesting and I was left wanting to know more about his species.
As always with Honey’s books the chemistry between the main characters was believable, realistic and hawt.

Bravo ♥️

A fairytale with a sci-fi twist!
I love this ingenious take on the Jack and the Beanstalk fairytale! It is a story richly told, set in a desolate location. You’ll recognize many elements from Jack and the Beanstalk. I had to laugh at the creative way some of them were woven into the story. Still, this a truly delightful romance that will satisfy a reader with the excitement, intrigue, ingenuity, and a HEA.

*WARNING* contains explicit sexual content and crude language
Honey Phillips has to have an amazing imagination to come up with such great stories. Jackie is to kind for her own good. Cormac is an amazing alien with unusual abilities, an unusual home, and Ms. Phillips comes up with the most creative male genitalia! This is a play on an old fairytale, but it's also more. I think this story is telling us that you really have to look out for yourself at some point.

Unique take on an old tale

For the most part, I really liked this story. It takes Jack and the Beanstalk to a much more romantic level. The world building is detailed and interesting. The main couple are endearing and worth cheering for. The baddies are worth booing. My only complaint is that there were moments that the heroine's blindness in regards to her sister and ex made her appear annoyingly stupid. Thankfully, she did not stay stuck there. Good story.

For a moment she thought he was going to argue with her, but then he laughed and put his arm around her. “Such a silly girl. I can’t wait until we’re married and I can take care of you properly.” (Si tomé el pobre celular y lo agité).
“I’ve already told you,” he said, ignoring the first part of her response. “No wife of mine is going to be a common miner.”

Lifting her higher, he pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. “Do not worry, my little karrida. You’re safe with me now and I will make sure that nothing happens to you again.”

“Part of me says no.” She shrugged. “But I know that is not the entire truth. I don’t need luxuries, although there are some that I would enjoy.” Her gaze traveled back towards the study with a wistful smile. “What I would like is enough money to feel secure, to fix things properly when they break, and to know that I need never to worry that Bella or I will go hungry.”

“No, don’t leave. Our time is too short to be parted.”

This wasn't so much badly written as just boring, the sister was ridiculous, made the mc seem stupid. And the attempts to shove bits of the original story felt clumsy .

Solid 4/5 star read! Loved it!

This series is a combo of two of my favorite things: fairy tales crossed with some good sci-fi. And it's a cozy romance on top of that.

It's a retelling of the fairytale 'Jack and the Beanstalk', where Jack is a young woman named "Jackie" and the giant - whose name is "Cormac" - is a ten-foot tall alien that's part plant, and their worlds are connected thanks to a beanstalk.

Jackie is a very solid FMC. Unlike her Jack counterpart, she's a very kind, hard working and thoughtful person. She is extremely devoted to providing for her younger sister, Bella (WHO IS PROBABLY THE WORST CHARACTER IN THIS BOOK, OH MY GOD). Jackie is so devoted to her little sister that she will give her anything she wants, even endure the most back-breaking labor just for her sake.

Only for Bella to completely throw all her hard work back in her face at every turn. Literally the worst.

Then we have our MMC, Cormac. Our leading giant plant hero, and what a great hero he is. He is a perfect match for Jackie. He lives alone in his world in the sky, which is a lush green land FULL of plants that he has sort of like a psychic link to. It's so cool. He's also the type of alien hero who wants to mate with her all the time, but is the BIGGEST gentleman at the same time.

True gentleman. Loved it.

For every ounce of devotion Jackie gives to her sister, Cormac returns to Jackie - and more. They have a sort of pre-established relationship at the beginning of the book together because Jackie has to trade crystals to aliens to provide for her sister and herself, and Cormac's body has difficulty accumulating to the environment on her planet so he has to wear a bio-suite that completely alters his appearance - on top of being unable to properly speak to her because of the suite.

They have a slight 'fated mates' type of relationship; Jackie felt this strange connection with Cormac when they first met and he gradually fell in love with her the more times they met for trade on her planet. So when a turn of events - thanks to Bella, ironically - brings Jackie to having to climb the beanstalk to meet with Cormac in his world to return a traded item, he is THRILLED.

Cormac is unapologetic with his feelings towards Jackie - and all it takes is one day for her to realize that he is the man for her. But she holds back because she doesn't have the heart to abandon Bella.

I do need to go into a little rant, but I'm gonna hide it for the sake of spoilers. If you've already read this book, you probably have an idea of what it'll be.

Though the more the story goes on, the more Jackie lets herself fall for him. And she is HOOKED on him after their first little intimate scene together.

There is such a good amount of spice in this book. It's frequent, but not overabundant. Cormac and Jackie are adorable during and after their spicy scenes. I appreciate when a spicy book knows when to crank up and turn down the smut; there always needs to be a balance to make the relationship believable.

And I don't care if this is a spoiler, but Jackie and Cormac even adopt a little chameleon pet they name Rascal and he is adorable. No fairytale is without a cute animal companion! (I also got 'Tangled' vibes from this idea which instantly won my heart).

This novel ends HEA for both Jackie and Cormac and it's so sweet. Just a perfect pink bowtie to a really sincere and spicy sci-fi romance. I am definitely hooked on this series and adding even more of them to my TBR. Please consider giving this book a chance if you enjoy something a little wholesome in your sci-fi romances!

Cormac is an alien that has special gifts that have been developed since he was born. He is part of a race of aliens that is technologically advanced and have done some questionable things in the name of science. He flies down from his home in the clouds to the surface to trade with the humans and other aliens. At the trading market he meets and becomes friends with Jackie. She is a crystal miner that has to take care of her younger sister since their parents are deceased. Due to Cormac's biology, he is always in a bio-suit when he arrives for trading day; so Jackie does all the talking and Cormac just listens and absorbs. By using the shallowness of Jackie's younger sister, Cormac is able to get Jackie to come to his residence in the clouds.

I look forward to reading fairy tale re-tellings because each author adds something interesting to the "original" story. In this re-telling, Jack is a female and the giant is a scientist. I liked the overall story, but Jackie's blind devotion to her younger sister was annoying. For the reader it is obvious from the first meeting the sister is not what she presents to Jackie. However Jackie is so caught up in trying to be the protector and honor the wishes of their deceased parents, she is oblivious to Bella's manipulations. Even at the end she continued to take care of her and Bella was not appreciative in the lest. This story does end on a HEA.
