Lament

Rate this book
Frances was determined to turn her back on the toxic town that betrayed her and her sister. When tragedy compels her to return, she's forced to confront all of the ghosts from her past—including West, the boy she never wanted to love and still doesn’t trust.

West is a reclusive artist with secrets of his own. He played a heartbreaking role on the night Frances fled in fear, but he never forgot her. Now that she's returned, they're like gasoline and match, and there's nothing he'd love more than to make her burn.

But passion, like fire, leaves behind ashes, and when an old threat arises, Frances is scared to death of what she'll find in their remains.

Art, dreams, spray paint. Love, death, villains. Awkward but nice. Can't keep plants alive.

Full disclosure: I am friends with Heatherdoll. while that is a wonderful aspect of my life and creates situations like this, wherein I get to read her newest release before it is in fact released, it does not affect my rating in any way.

Lament is probably the darkest non-vampire book that Heather has written. It is both creepy and alarmingly sexy in turns. The main character, Frances, is interesting and extremely frustrating at times. She has survived some pretty horrific situations that have stripped her of a lot of her own self-worth so while frustrating it is understandable. Her love interest, West, is not much of a prince charming but is fascinating and dark and twisted in all the best ways.

This novel has a darkness that oozes across the pages, never fully vanishing at any point, but it is compelling as hell too. I don't really know if any of this makes a lot of sense, what I'm trying to say is that I enjoyed it thoroughly.

PREVIOUSLY:
My latest book has a synopsis now, thanks to my friend Nenia! I mentioned that I was having trouble writing a good one so she whipped up something amazing for me, because she's awesome like that.

LAMENT is about a young woman who returns to her hometown after running away nine years earlier. She isn't ready to face the past, but it threatens to claim her anyway. And the only thing that may keep her from unraveling is the all-consuming attention of the only boy she ever loved.

Teenage parties! A small town! Regrets! Fire! Passion!

I plan to release this in a couple of weeks, so stay tuned! ♥

Day-um. I wish I could write as well as Heather Crews. Really liked her vampire book, Dreams for the Dead, but this one steals the show. Loved the eerie Ozark setting and the moody, atmospheric style. The romance was so intense, and I’m such a sucker for that. ;)

Me when people try to get me to go for a "walk in the woods" after reading this book

Seriously, me running after the FMC Frances as she decides to go into one creepy abandoned house after another, and will not stay out of the creepy woods!

I liked this book a lot! It is a thriller romance and, be warned, it is VERY scary! Something bad happened to our FMC Frances at a Halloween party 9 years ago, and she fled her small, corrupt town and hasn't returned. Her mother's death forces her to come back home, and meets the lean, sardonical West, who hasn't stopped wanting her.

Me with literally any premise this author writes:

*spoilers below*

The whole book I was waiting for the abusive ex Morven to pop up and start causing a ruckus as the serial killer who is slitting throats in the woods, so I was delighted to find out that instead Frances had already murdered him and stuffed his corpse in a closet!

I really liked Frances and was heartbroken for all her trauma. It was a realistic portrayal of trauma, I think. I did like West's patience, and I loved the Missouri setting.

In conclusion: very recommended!
