Tbh I am such a fan of the Dark Crystal saga that I could watch/read anything from the franchise and enjoy it. But this was genuinely fun, it picks up right after the events of the movie and it's a nice sweet story. Love the artwork too. I need to read more of these comics!
I found some of the visuals very confusing, and the mythology seems to be added to as necessary, all along the way in this story (for example: Skeksis artifacts turn Gelflings into zombies!). There are some perhaps interesting ideas in this series, along with some ideas that I don't care for, but overall it was entirely forgettable.
This story was wrapped up, but it never really floored me. I was hoping in previous volumes that there was just a slow build up to what would amount to be a worthwhile story to leave us with. This story happens to be one placed furthest out in the Dark Crystal timeline and yet it fell flat for me. As a whole, it was a continuation of what was established in Power of the Dark Crystal. However, I felt it did very little to add anything new to the collective history of this world.
it was a great continuation/ending of the first two volumes however i find that this dark crystal series is just not for me , i am not a big fan of some of the characters or the plot
Good grief. I only finished it because I love the art in between chapters. This went completely YA in the worst ways. Not only was the art just sad, but the story felt completely foreign to the world of Thra. That world is so unique. Not sure why they felt they needed to break away. Very hard to get through. Don’t recommend for fans of this world.
Vol 1 was a slow start, Vol 2 showed more promise and plot development and Vol 3 falls somewhere in between (3.5 stars). It places Thurma and Kensho at the heart of great danger to the Fireling and Gelfling realms and runs their stories in parallel and yet the excitement felt a little flat. I'm not even entirely sure why. Maybe it's because it's a very quick read. Dialogue and narrative are kept to a minimum which maximises the impact of the beautiful artwork but doesn't give time to really delve into the characters and situation. I wanted a little more depth. It may be a case that the story would have had more impact if fleshed out to the animated sequel that The Dark Crystal deserves.
It's still an enjoyable read with plenty to like and comic book and Dark Crystal fans will be glad to add these beautiful hardcovers to their collection.
A lovely end to this story. While yes this is not a new story of good and light triumphing over hate, greed and darkness it is done well, and I enjoyed it a great deal. The characters arcs conclude well and satisfyingly. The art is great and the story flows. I very much wished there was more. 5/5
A beautiful conclusion to the Power/Beneath the Dark Crystal story! The Power of the Dark Crystal was something very different in the world of the Dark Crystal, it was more colorful and also more hopeful. This time around I think that Beneath the Dark Crystal is actually EVEN MORE colorful and hopeful than Power of the Dark Crystal was. While the story falls into some cliches it still finds new ways to reinvent the Dark Crystal and tell a fresh and engaging new chapter.
Basically a wrap up for these characters. They put more characters in but it got too chaotic and not much emphasis on them. Mostly static characters. But four stars is for the time they put in the artwork, especially the gallery at the end of the books.
