First of all, I have to say I’m seeing more and more covers by May Dawney and it makes me happy because, seriously, how gorgeous is this cover? And it’s perfect for the story, too.

I read (and loved) Zoe Reed’s Charon Docks at Daylight not long ago. When I began reading In Dyer Need, CDAD immediately came to mind as the story Claire Highton-Stevenson tells could be what happened right before. Some terrorist group has poisoned a large part of the world population with a drug that makes humans turn into mindless beasts, whose only purpose is to kill others. Representatives from various governments are about to meet in London to try and deal with the situation when all hell breaks loose and they have to be evacuated. Andrea Fielding, British Home Secretary, ends up fleeing with the head of her security team Ren Dyer, another agent, the Dutch Home Secretary – who is also her former lover – and her assistant. As the five of them try to cross the country to get to some place safe, they all get to know one another (and a few others they meet on the way).

Given the premise, it won’t come as much of a surprise that this first chapter of a two-part series is at times quite gory but never gratuitously so. In Dyer Need moves at a very exciting pace, with some action and a few scary moments, but it’s also a romance, as Andi and Ren start falling in love in the middle of the apocalypse. The chemistry between the two women isn’t obvious at first, yet when it starts coming out, it’s full on. Besides the pace of the book, one of the things I liked best was how well-developped most of the characters were, from the small group accompanying Andi and Ren to the people they encounter on their journey. And I can’t really write about it without spoiling, but Andi comes up with a rather brilliant idea toward the end that only makes me want to read the second part even more.

Also, this was the first time I acted as beta reader. I’ve been the “fresh set of eyes” a few times before, for translations, but usually for books I’d already read in English, and I’ve given advice to a couple of authors on French language and sentence structure here and there. So, this was new. And an interesting experience.

I received a copy from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

First off, thank you, Jude for introducing this book to us and the valuable info that May Dawney designed the book cover. I truly love Survival Instincts and if you're a fan as well and just had your heart taken by Zoe Reed through CDAD then you should check this book out. If you haven't read Survival Instincts and CDAD but curious and interested, you should start with In Dyer Need. It is the perfect first book for this genre.

The story had the foreboding feel to it from the start, excellent worldbuilding, multi-layered-complex-characters, intriguing mystery, sex, heartbreak, emotional and again the battle between the infected humans vs just bad humans. One of the things I love about this author though, is her ability to give me not only twisted tales but also intense romance that I can't help but become obsessed over - this is my third by the author.

I got a lot of insights into the leads and watched them struggled and grow as they navigate through the new unpredictable/harsh world. However, almost all issues/hurdles faced were easily resolved so I was left craving for more even as I was trying to put off the fire in my bedroom - no thanks to the holy clit-battering hell sex scenes. I really wonder if we should or shouldn't look forward to the end of the world.

Why not perfect? The two books I mentioned above, they were heartbreaking, mindblowing and unforgiving. They grabbed me by the throat, punched me in the gut and kicked me when I was down for good measure. This book, however, was like playing Subway Surfer when the security guard + his dog chased the avatar at the beginning of the game. I do appreciate the tiny fraction of blood, guts, gore, and brain featured in the story. IMO, the author did not plan to focus on the dark and gritty hence plenty of romance and sexual tension-filled encounters scenes that gave the story a "lighter" feel.

Even though I enjoyed the leads' romance, I struggled a bit with the potential romance for the secondary characters as I was thinking that in extremely dangerous and life-threatening situations, there weren't supposed to be room for relationship development but one fictional character did say " We are still human even in the face of beast, even with our lives at risk. When you're close to death, love is sometimes the only thing that makes sense in life" - so what the heck, 3⅝ stars for this.

This was a very exciting and a little scary book, scary because it doesn’t take much imagination to see that something like this really could happen. It takes place in England and it’s about Andrea Fielding, British Home Secretary, and her Bodyguard Ren Dyer. This is the first of two books.

During a terrorist attack in several European countries and the United States with a widespread drug that changes people into deadly and bloodthirsty beings, Andrea and Ren are on the run to safety together with another agent, the Dutch Home Secretary (Andreas former lover) and her assistant. What they witness during their journey is unbelievably brutal, thousands of people are dead, everywhere is destruction and violence. They have several meetings with survivors, but not always friendly encounters. But they also find loyalty and friendship, even love.

I very much liked both MCs, they are really strong women, but they know sometimes you need a shoulder to lean on. In the scariest time of their life, they find each other, but is love enough to get through this horrible time? The romance in the middle of this horrible scenario is wonderful and very enjoyable.

The pace is steady and the story is gripping and has you hooked from the first page. All the characters are very well developed and helped the story to grow and added depth. The writing style is great and the story flows without a dull moment.

Highly recommended to everyone.

A fun romance with a slight end of the world feel 4.5*

CHS is one of my go to kU authors and I also try to read her books as soon as they become available. This one is a romance with an end of the world, kinda end if the world, background story. Don't go into this thinking its the other way around because you will be sorely mistaken and not enjoy the book for what it is.
Andi becomes Prime Minister after a drug begins poisoning the masses turning them into violent "zombies" ( use that term lightly as they are not actually dead per se) and all acting power heads ahead of her are killed. He head of security Ren Dyer and her second Jeremy something are all that is keeping Andi and two other foreign dignitaries alive. The journey is a good one with unexpected encounters, unexpected loves, and yes even unexpected heartaches. Its a fun journey to take and I look forward to the next installment in the groups, especially Ren and Andi's, adventure.

So, I’m not sure how I should rate this. I liked the book, the plot and was expecting a lot more suspense and action in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-like world. My mistake was probably I read IDN right after watching World War Z - my bad. From watching something so visual, full of action & suspense in WWZ and then trying to visualise the action scenes in IDN - I came up short. But that’s not to say that IDN wasn’t good because it was a pretty good read that kept you on the edge, with romance brewing between 2 strong female leads, Ren and Andrea..... and might I add, hot sex between the leads in the chaotic world that they found themselves in...

This was my second experience with this book - the first being on audio. While the story was still completely intriguing and I enjoyed it, I have to say I think the audio took it to a whole other level. And rightly so! The best narrators elevate the quality of a work.
This thriller set in Britain about a worldwide apocalyptic event is such an interesting premise and I loved the two strong and admirable MCs.
Because I can be a bit anal, I find weird formatting issues on Kindle distracting.
Still - this is a terrific book and the follow-up is outstanding! I think my preference with most of Highton-Stevenson's books is on audio. She has a knack for picking great ones.

I read this book in February and still feel I have to leave a review because Claire Highton-Stevenson writes great books and this particular book is thrilling! I listened to this book and did not want to put it away. No question I'm going to read or listen and enjoy the final chapter of this mini-series.

This was epic!

The world could be ending, but it’s not too late for Andrea Fielding – acting Prime Minister – to find love, and with none other than her gorgeous bodyguard, Ren Dyer. They embark on an epic adventure of trust, love, and understanding when dealing with a crisis, finding happiness and a little something more in the most dire of times.

Claire knows how to deliver a great story, and this was no different. A new story, slightly different genre for Claire yet it was the most epic adventure she has brought us yet, and I now am definitely looking forward to more from Andrea and Ren.

I was practically on the edge of my seat reading this epic adventure, unable to put the book down and highly invested in the characters and their race against time to escape the mayhem and crisis of a terror attack. I was so excited yet found this nail-biting as an experience. Uncertainty lay in each turn of the page, and it wasn’t without its surprises. These characters encounter so much you can’t help but get invested in their story, experiencing everything they go through so intimately, and emotionally becoming connected with each and every one of them and their emotions.

I just need more of this!!! The story was amazing but now two wonderful characters have a future that I need to know about, no matter what it holds.

Ren Dyer is hot – undoubtedly – and her connection with Andrea, and the other characters was strong. She was stubborn, but a natural born leader and she excelled and showing these traits in her behaviour and interactions with each and every character, but she was also respectful. Ren is such an admirable character, the one everyone wants to be, or be with, and she is a total star, but she is vulnerable, and this really shines through from time to time, especially once Andrea starts breaking down her walls.

But it is Andrea who ended up being my favourite character! She’s the older woman, so naturally I adored her, but her kindness, and vulnerability was always on the surface, and even when she stood up to lead. It made her realistic, very human, and relatable and I just loved how much she loved Ren. It was intense!

Brilliant! And I can’t wait to read more!!!

The more I read or listen to Claire Highton-Stevenson's work, the more impressed I become. Granted, I've only read three so far (and have several more in the queue) but every one has been completely unique. I was immediately intrigued with this thriller set in Britain about a worldwide apocalyptic event. It's a really interesting premise, the two female MCs are strong and admirable, and there are a host of other characters that really add to the story. And although the book primarily deals with the effects and survival of the event, there is also a lovely (and hot) romance at the heart of it. I also discovered a new narrator in Sarah Kempton. Wow. She has an absolutely delicious English accent and a deep repertoire of voices and dialects for the various characters - both male and female. She doesn't just have a great voice - she performs it beautifully as well. I'm completely impressed with her and am very hopeful she'll do the follow-up. Highton-Stevenson is quickly becoming a go-to author for me. Highly recommend!

Thoroughly enjoyed this modern apocalyptic read set in England with action and lesbian romance.

I was always a fan of dystopian novels growing up, but so many of them were set in the US and featuring straight characters. So to find a book outside of that framework really thrilled me, and the content did not disappoint!

I can't wait to read the next book!

Highly recommended!

Post-apocalyptic/epidemic story with strong female characters. Dyer and co. were characters I could easily follow as I found they were built to be survivors.

Not usually the type of book I read, survivalist. However this caught my attention. I had an audible book and the narration was great! I now have book 2 cause I have to find out how it ends. There are still loose ends at the end of book one, but it ends in a good place.

I know I’ve said many times how much I enjoy Claire’s stories because they are always engaging and she has a way with words that will draw you to whatever world she has written about. This story isn’t the exception and definitely doesn’t disappoint. It is the first part of two and the start is magnificent.

The story is about agent Ren Dyer who is head of the protection team for the Home Secretary Andrea Fielding (Andi). An incident happened that has tilted the world from its axis, changing everything as we know it. Andrea becomes Prime Minister and Ren wants to keep her alive more now than ever. Andrea needs Ren but not only as her bodyguard. Will Ren be willing to break the rules when the world doesn’t have them anymore?

I’m not usually a fan of end of the world stories, but I enjoyed very much this one because, in reality, it is a romance that happens in an end of the world kind of setting. It is a very gripping story where you will find a sizzling intense romance, a great plot, amazing well-developed characters, a lot of action, thrill, a bit of mystery and wonderful sexy scenes.

The pace is wonderful; there is never a dull moment. This story will keep you turning pages from beginning to end.

I can’t wait for part two. I happily would like to recommend this book.

I received an ARC copy of the book from the author and voluntarily leaving my review.

End of the world books are not usually my thing, but this one is definitely more about romance than survival. Ren and Andrea have always had a purely professional relationship, but when they find themselves part of a small band of survivors trying to find a safe haven after a mysterious (presumed) terror attack, the feelings they've been suppressing begin to surface. Andrea is likable as the focused Home Secretary who finds herself thrust into a position of greater power and just wants to find a way to save as many people as she can. Ren is equally likable as the bodyguard who has never let herself think about anything but work and ends up melting for Andrea. Both of these women have felt like they had no time for love, but now that civilization is crumbling, they begin to realize what they've been missing and that there's no more time to waste. Seeing their romance flourish under difficult circumstances makes the end of the world seem not so bad!
The really intriguing thing is the bits and pieces we learn about Ren's troubled childhood and the odd dreams she has that are never explained. Although the story has a satisfactory ending, something seems a little off at times as if there's something else going on that we can't quite see, and this mystery that runs beneath the surface has me itching to read the sequel and get all my questions answered!

I do hope the loose ends will be tied within the completion of the second book. Who are the perpetrators in the last attack of the village. More importantly what was the purpose of 'the Cleanse' and what organization is responsible or is it government(s) sanctioned. I did get a decent sense of driving through the outskirts of the larger cities. Meeting the dark side of humanity was well written. I'm not a whole-hearted fan of the romance between Dyer and Andrea (I believe Dyer was taken advantage of in a horrid situation of events) but that's at the heart of the book. And so I still believe Claire knocked another out of the park and I continue learning more about the worldview of Britain and Europeans when crap hits the fan.

I enjoyed reading this book and get the imagination juices going. I liked both MC's and the supporting characters too. It was all going so brilliantly for me but then... I suppose it would have been too perfect, if bad things didn't happen - well, worse things.

I saw that there's another book after this and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

First off - the narration is amazing. Sarah Kempton does so many accents and they are all really great and makes it easy to tell who is talking. Hat's off to you Sarah - great job.

Second - You need to read/listen to this as a lesfic romance with a side of post apocalypse action/adventure and not the other way around. I was coming at from the other direction and there is certain point in the book where Dyer acts in a way that didn't make any sense to me given what had just happened

Third - it was a fun listen and I will be getting the next one (and also looking for any additional books narrated by Sarah Kempton!) :)

Ms. Highton-Stevenson takes on the end of the world with this romance in the beginnings of an apocalypse. The characters are well developed and you are rooting for them to all make it to the end, and if/when some don’t, you feel it like a gut punch. Well written, as one should expect from Ms. Highton-Stevenson, and leaves the reader wanting more. I can’t wait for the next chapter!

I have read a few books by Claire and this is definitely different from the others! I normally don’t like end of world books but for me, this had the perfect balance of romance, sexy scenes, angst, and action! I’m excited for the next installment and hope we get more interaction with Ren and McKenzie! Because who doesn’t love a sexy badass butch with a soft heart for kids??

This book really gets you thinking about how life might pan out after a catastrophic event, and how quickly society as we know it breaks down. At the core of the book is a tender love story, one that tells of resourcefulness, and the human urge to survive.

I had the audiobook and found the different accents a little dodgy at times, but overall it was of a good quality.

3.25 stars. Not my favourite CHS book, but I think that is because I’m not particularly fond of the post apocalyptic type genre. Bit slow to start and not enough action in it for an action/adventure. The two main characters are both really strong women and you can really feel the bond that develops between them in their time of need.
The audiobook version was well narrated by Sarah Kempton.

This book doesn't disappoint, i totally enjoyed it, so much so i'll probably go ahead and buy it to keep (read on KU).

I'm slightly biased in that i love end of the world post apocalyptic shizz, but i'm not overly into pure romance stories. This however was the perfect combination of hotness, romance, angst and action.
The writing is to a high quality and flows well, with a story arc that even for a survivalist genre doesn't come across as too over the top.

Hailing from the UK and Yorkshire at that, i really enjoyed that the story was set in England, it just adds another layer to the vividness of your own imagination.
The main characters were believable in their job roles and blossoming romance. I liked that we start to see the other sides of their public personas and i'm intrigued to see how that develops in the next book.

Totally worth reading/purchasing!

I am a serious fan of Claire Highton-Stevenson and I applaud her for writing this novel. The story line of this novel is not generally one I partake in. I am go grateful that I took the opportunity to experience this novel. I was amazed at how gripping and page turning it was. The whole scary but possible scenario that plays out here is engaging and scary. The amazing resilience of the characters makes this a 5 star book in my reading list. The characters are so well developed and believable. I am eager to read the next book in the series. If you're looking to stretch your reading world I would definitely recommend this read.

Awesome story with fabulous narration (audiobook version) about attack on humanity by unknown entity. The action and decisions made kept you thinking what happens next. It kind of felt scary and hopeful. What both main characters went trough and their goals on survival and decision making was unreal.

Would love to discover what will happen in book #2.
