Many of the Cape High books have themes related to family, but I felt that Kaden's book did an especially good job of diving into the ideas of found family and biological family, how they've each shaped him and how as he becomes an adult his choices will shape his place in the different families; he exemplifies the idea that, to a great extent, family is a choice. And while he starts out the book with some big things to work through, by the end he's able to make some very good and well-reasoned choices in regard to his families and his future.
Also, it was very fun to expand our contact with/understanding of the Legends! It seems like by the end we've *probably* met all of them now, or at least heard of them.
Once again we are left in third person, but Aloha boy focuses on a character that hasn't had a chance to narrate. There were a lot of secrets and hidden lineage revealed and hinted at through the book that was fun, along with a whole new cast that comes and interact with Cape High Central. I enjoyed the new interactions and the introduction of several Legends was a change of pace. However meeting the Sandman and the Tooth fairy in this book reminded me so much of the movie Rise of the Guardians that it was hard to pull my impressions from the movie from the characters in the book. The fights in this book were fun, and I really wished the final brawl between Kaden's family and Cape High had been longer.
Overall, this was a fun read that was hard to put down and deeply compelling.
5 stars as usual because I love every Cape High book. This one was a little more special. I could tell that the author was really excited about this story and it made it even more enjoyable for me. So many threads and characters are hard to juggle but this was a real pleasure to read.
Ross makes you fall in love with her characters and their fun world. Every book is a pleasure. The wait between books is a little tough! It just gives me time to re-read the series honestly. This will be my fourth time. The books really are that fun.
