Three die in a psychiatric hospital. A triple homicide. A contagion, deadly and mysterious, is the killer’s weapon of choice.
A dart flies. A woman dies in the shower, her neck is punctured. A homicide, hours from Chicago. Poison, deadly and concocted, is the killer’s weapon of choice.
As her city teeters on the verge of panic, Detective Rylee Hayes is forced to divide her attention between two killers, one whose actions could result in a global pandemic, and the other, an old nemesis whose next target is her fiancée.
Cade Brogan writes romantic thrillers with lesbian protagonists; stories that'll make your hair stand on end. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Illinois. Also, she holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling from Eastern Illinois University. Her professional background is in mental health and child abuse investigations. She enjoys golf, bridge, and of course, reading and writing lesbian fiction.
With a new partner, Rylee investigates a new case on top of the old pain in the arse, the Grey case. Everything start to spin terrifyingly out of control and the stakes are high. Not to mention the danger that threatened her family. WOW, what a sequel! From the first page it sets me on edge and it holds you engrossed. The tension is built up slowly and the threats are frighteningly realistic. The story was well constructed and the author keeps us readers guessing. A clever, chilling, heart-wrenching story with a nail-biting finish. You will be thrilled, terrified and disgusted. Be prepared for the unexpected. I cannot wait for the next one and I highly recommend it.
I was drawn into this book from the beginning and I enjoyed it for the most part. I like how the author seemed to be writing different stories at once that all ran into the main story. That was nicely done. The ending was a bit of a surprise to me though not completely. I just wish the author would have given more information on Claire to help me understand why she'd put up with Elizabeth.
That was a relationship I couldn't understand. Also, the thoughts of Elizabeth got to be a bit too long and drawn out for me. It provided some insight into the character, but I didn't need those lengthy asides through the entire book.
The book could have used a bit more action, but it was an enjoyable read. I did not read the first book, but I already have it so I'll more than likely read it.
What a captivating and enthralling thriller! This author has gone above and beyond to bring these characters to life for me and she had me gripping my kindle as I worried about Rylee, Kenzie and Abby’s welfare. This is an awesome installment to the first book in the series called Cold to the Touch. I can’t believe that I pulled an all-nighter just to find out what was going to happen next! I must admit that this is one of the best medical thrillers I’ve read this year. My coffee cup is raised in this author’s honor and I really hope that another sequel is on the horizon because I want to live vicariously through Rylee again!
This book is amazing! Its intense, insane and incredible! It is a perfect follow up to Close Enough TO Touch, the first book in the series and yet it can be read as a stand-alone (But I HIGHLY suggest you read both books, in any order because they are so awesome!!) By the 5th chapter I was full of dread and my tummy was in knots! The killer is BACK and even more DEMENTED!!! Just when you think you know what is what and are waiting for the deed to be done, the plot has the nerve to twist, thicken and change in a way you won’t see coming, then OMG it gets even more unbelievable and SO not what you thought… It was enough to nearly cause me to pass out! Ok, maybe not that far but I was on the edge of my seat and my fingernails ARE considerably shorter… Read this book, read the first book and then BEG the author for more, I am!!
This is a great read but it really is too close to home!! There is a lot of foreshadowing, did Cade know what was about to happen in our world when she wrote this?!?!?
I thought this was kinda meh. It reminds of ‘They Never Learn’ a little with the murderous women but I didn’t enjoy this book as much.
The use of the word ‘doer’ for the killer was weird and confusing since most books and tv shows I’ve read or seen use ‘unsub’, ‘perpetrator’, or ‘bad guy’. Doer didn’t sound as impactful or threatening as those words.
Another odd choice of words is when Piper (April’s girlfriend) says ‘chick-a-dee’ as a term of endearment despite being an eight grader. Now, I don’t know what time period the story is set in but it’s fairly modern (they have gay marriage). So I’m not sure what teenager is using that term.
“Deadly Deception” By Cade Brogan. It’s #2 in Cade’s Detective Rylee Hayes series. It’s good. Warning, this killer has some serious mental health issues that may make you uncomfortable. The story is about a serial killer who poisons mixed race women in theIr showers, she thinks God speaks to her and doesn’t want the races to mix. In the first book she try’s to kill Hayes’s girlfriend. The killer has guilty feelings because she is a lesbian and enjoys watching the women showering before she kills them. The killer then punishes herself with a cat of nine tails and nipple clamps, not because she has killed someone but because of her lustful thoughts. Ironically, the killer is a brilliant doctor, virologist, and botanist. She is talking to multiple versions of herself in her head. She has killed over 300 women and the plot thickens. In this book the killer has taken a lover who turns out to be Hayes’s new partner.
SAPPHIC BOOK BINGO: established couple, butch character, out of your comfort zone, not a romance, character with a disability; UNICORN: faith, BDSM, more than two POV's, second generation, (possibly other categories)
It was quite a thrilling follow-up to Close Enough to Touch. The story had more points of view than the first book, and that added to the complexity of the plot. There were changes and developments to the previous ensemble, and a few new characters were added. One will definitely be in the next book in the series.
The author's background helped to create a true-to-life, fantastically deranged killer. Expertise and accuracy has almost always made the best stories, and I felt that it made a difference for this series. Another great read.
This is the second book in the series and it was just as exciting as the first. I am reading this and it’s July 2020 and from what I can tell this series is a couple of years old. It was a little surreal for me to have a coronavirus mentioned in the story as that is currently what we are living right now. As for the story itself, it was intriguing to listen to the mind of the killer and what was going on in her own head as Riley who hasn’t stopped looking for her, is trying to find doers who are releasing a deadly virus and killing people. There was that twist ending which would indicate the story continues and hopefully it will.
K.A. Moll almost hit it out of the park with this one! Good plot development kept me wondering who and how. (Only thing I was left wondering about was what started “Elizabeth” on her mission to get Kenzie - did I miss the explanation?) I love reading lesbian thriller fiction - there is much more to us than HEA!
Wow, what a book. Full of action and set after set drama. I started with Book #2 and even though those are connected, I felt it was ok to go into it. It was audiobook, which was really good. Now, the thing is...when is #3
I never normally leave reviews but this is the second book in the series that I have read and I couldn't put it down. Really enjoyable story, full of suspense and surprising twists. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a fully submersive series. Very much looking forward to the next book.
The plot of this book made no sense. I read the whole thing thinking it would get better but it didn’t. Really really disappointed after reading the first book that this is the follow up.
Cade Brogan has created an incredible character in Rylee Hayes. Deadly Deception has all of the requirements of being an awesome thriller. I will be on pins and needles waiting for the next book in the series.
Another brilliant story with twists ,deaths and so much more. Detective Rylee gets a new partner but she not sure about her Detective Clare Robbins is her name. So the hunt continues for her nemesis, but a new case in which a number of people have died within hours. Could it be a pandemic ??.The author Cade Brogan did a brilliant job writing this and kept the story flowing from the start to the end. Cannot wait for the next one. Definitely recommend 5*** STARS.
This is the 2nd book in the Rylee Hayes series. I really enjoyed the first one but the 2nd was even better! So, a bit of a cliff hanger at the end. All I can say is, there better be a 3rd book!
