Algernon's Anomaly

Rate this book
There's an anomaly corrupting the streets of the night club district.

A paranormal vortex sits among the vibrating walls and neon lights, dormant.

It is only awoken by the angst of an edgy teenager, triggering the beginning of the end. It was a simple ghost tour, that was, until it all went wrong. The effects of that night would haunt Thaddeus as he spent the next five years in the mental health unit, seeing things and hearing a voice that the medication couldn't silence.

Thaddeus could never forget the striking tour guide, Algernon, and his stupid smile.

But what if Thaddeus wasn't sick?

What if he was haunted?

Algernon holds the answers.

In this paranormal romance, more than love hangs in the balance as an oppressive paranormal anomaly taints everything it touches. Thaddeus is left to untangle a haunting web of happily never afters, before his story becomes another.

Content warnings for this book include suicide, depictions and descriptions. Please do not read if you will find these themes or images triggering.

I became aware of this author because he promoted his new book on TikTok. While waiting for it to be released I decided to read his other book. And I can say I absolutely loved it. It was so good, I read it in one setting.
I love Thaddeus and Algernon so much, just as I love Honore.
The story definitely turned into something way bigger than I expected and now looking back, I can't understand how he put so much story into not that many sites, but still being able to develop the characters perfectly and without making it feel rushed.
I cried multiple times, being completely on edge the last 100 pages of the book. I feel like I will need to think about the ending some more, to be able to really say what I think about it. I don't want to spoil anything so I will not get into detail... but I'm so happy, but still there is some sort of pain left. But still, I feel like you end up and the end of the book somewhere you didn't expect.
Would definitely recommend it and I will now start 'Watch me'!!

This was such a great book! I loved the mix between the cute romance, the emotional scenes, and the saving-the-world scenes. Overall it was a really fun book that I couldn’t put down. There were quite a lot of spelling and grammar mistakes in it, but another edit or two could fix them.

This was a great book. I really connect with and can not wait for Valentyne to publish more books. I would suggest it to anyone who just want a great book to read. But I will say there is a few Grammer errors but for the most part it is good.

I, honestly, have such mixed feelings about this book. I liked it, but I easily could have loved it. I was loving it until the end. I did not like the end that much. It is very bittersweet, but leaning more on the bitter for me. My biggest warning for this book is that suicide is a HUGE topic in this book. I have actually never seen a book deal with it like this one has. And the weirdest thing about it was that it never really condemned it. I have read lots of books that mention suicide, but they have always made it clear you should not do it. That said, this book didn’t necessarily say it was okay or that it would have good results, but it didn’t explicitly say that it wouldn’t. Other than that glaring issue, I rather enjoyed the plot. I love paranormal things and this was just up my alley. Most of the time when you think of stories about ghosts, you think of horror. This book is in no way a horror book, which I found refreshing. The overall plot is a bit complicated, but it isn’t too hard to follow along. I will say it is very, very gripping (I read the entire thing in two days!). If you are okay reading about suicide then go ahead and read this book, if you aren’t, I definitely do not recommend it.

Warnings: suicide, suicidal thoughts, death, language, mental illness, rape, mention of abuse, and slight shmexy stuff

I came across this book on amazon when hunting around for my next read. The amazon reviews were pretty uniformly glowing.

So I had a bit of a shock when I got the book and started reading. A few reviewers mention spelling mistakes but the writing was more like a rambling stream of consciousness, written in badly constructed sentences and riddled with spelling mistakes.

I had to throw in the towel part way through chapter 1 because I found the writing so painful I couldn't continue despite best efforts. So 1 star for me - I didn't like this book, and I couldn't get on with it. I'd expect better from a published book - even self pub.

I'd just recommend that you read the sample before purchasing the book to see if you like the writing style enough to enjoy the story. Unfortunately I couldn't.

I really enjoyed the book and found it to be a very entertaining, quick read. I found them on TikTok promoting a new book coming out soon and decided to read this one in the meantime since it was on amazon unlimited. The author is very good at telling a story and creating interesting characters that I wanted to follow and learn more about.

I will say the conversations between the characters seemed rather unrealistic to me a lot of the times though that may just be the author's style and did not affect my overall entertainment. There was a lot of telling rather than showing throughout the book as well which may be why some dialog seemed unnatural to me. Often throughout there would also be very big tonal shifts from a really intense or sad scene to then suddenly a very happy scene, sometimes within the same chapter. I do not think it is necessarily a bad thing but did catch me off guard a few times. The pacing at the end was also a bit off to me and I found myself caring a lot less about what would happen towards the end of the book.

That being said, for the most part I found myself not wanting to put the book down and was very excited to see what would happen next for the vast majority of the book. I really like the premise of this book and thought it was very interesting. I tore through this book much faster than most books that I read which definitely speaks to the author's skill of keeping the reader's attention. I am a very slow reader so it usually takes me awhile to finish a book but I got through this rather quickly. This author is overall a wonderful and unique storyteller and I look forward to reading more of their works.

I was surprised to enjoy this book so much considering I'm not a big fan of the paranormal genre but this book hooked me right from the start with its characters, plot and writing style. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because there were a lot of typos throughout the book, enough to pull me out of the story in some places. With another edit these could be fixed and the book would be perfect in my opinion.

This book was absolutely amazing. It was quite a roller-coaster. I am definitely going to read this book over and over. It is a great paranormal, romantic, fantasy style book. It's not a super long read so it's easy to read over a weekend or even in a day if you're really ambitious. If you haven't read it already, please do!!! I got my copy on Amazon.

For the record: I am not writing all of this to be mean. But also I think the ratings on this book are seriously skewed, so I'd like to give my two cents.

This book was Not Good. I don’t even really know how to summarize everything I didn’t like with it; the writing was choppy and rambling. The characters were also way too insta-love, which I hated: at least we hear Thaddeus kind of crushing on him from the get-go, but Algeron is supposed to be so closed off and tortured but then that is completely ignored and gotten over in literally three days. Also, really felt like the story portrayed suicide as a positive option/way out of a bad situation, and kind of romanticized it as this dark, edgy thing to do. Obviously I read the TWs, I knew suicide was a part of the story, but I don't think it was handled well at all.

On top of all of the things I just mentioned, there was also just an absolutely absurd number of typos, bad grammar, incorrect punctuation, the works. At one point, Algeron’s name is autocorrected to “Afternoon” and not fixed (at least, I’m assuming that’s what happened). It’s as if the author wrote this in thirty seconds and did not do a single pass of editing before publishing.

The only reason this book even gets one star is because I loved Honore and there were some funny little quips with the fact that she was a ghost, very Klaus from TUA energy. But that’s literally the only thing I enjoy from all FOUR HUNDRED PAGES of this book.

Anyway, I hate having to leave reviews like this, but I was very unimpressed by this book. Maybe I'm missing something, based on the number of five star reviews, but I did not like this at all.

Algernon's Anomaly is an amazing book. As the story unravels through twist and turns of trying to find out what happened with the characters after an accident with the paranormal experience and the shocking ending will leave you wanting to read more. I think that everyone will find something in this book that they will love whether it's the action adventure side or the romantic comedy or the paranormal side it's just a fantastic book.( If you love this book go check out Valentyne's other books they are just as amazing as this one.)

I found this book a long while ago on booktok and it quickly made it's way onto my wishlist on amazon. I finally bought it this year and have finally got to sit down and read it. Now that I have I wish I would have picked it up sooner. It quickly has become a favorite of mine, the whole concept of the story as well as the writing and storytelling itself is amazing. The author, Valentyne, has a great writing style and storytelling ability and has quickly found a place as one of my favorite authors. I can't wait to read his other books as well!

Wow

This is amazing. Humor, mystery, romance.. this was so well written and the main characters were all so unique and interesting ~and edgy 😂~ Absolutely in love with this book. I’m a little sad/dissatisfied about the conclusion but cant really fault the author, maybe it’s just me being sad that the book ended... it felt maybe a bit open ended. Or maybe I just wanted it to end differently. Not sure. But an absolutely unbelievably amazing book nonetheless, enjoy reading!!

I bought this book when it first came out. My toxic trait is that I buy books and read them yrs later and I wish I read it sooner. I don't want to spoil anything but I'll say this, it was a good read.

This is one of those books I wish I could read again for the first time.

I have followed Valentyne on Instagram and Tiktok for a long time, and this book beautifully combines real events experienced by the author and a fantasy paranormal romance! I highly recommend prior to reading this book going to Valentyne's Tiktok and watching the ghost tour videos. Having watched those videos prior to reading the book added so much content to the book. Valentyne allows these characters to show raw emotion and still keep the book a fun intriguing adventure.

As a warning, this book does have material that may be sensitive to some readers. This book is also self-published - which is amazing, but you may encounter the occasional typo.

It was adorable!! There are a lot of typographical errors which could’ve been fixed with one more edit, hence the 4 stars instead of 5 - but overall it was very good!
