Rhys Darby is a New Zealand author, actor and comedian. In 2018 he released his first kid's book Top Secret Undercover Notes of Buttons Mcginty and then in 2019 he released The Top Secret Interdimensional Notes of Buttons McGinty: Book 2.
Buttons McGinty is looking for his parents as he was in Book 1 … they are “missing, presumed missing”. And as in Book 1 Buttons keeps a journal complete with sketches of much that he sees and does as he leaves the strange boarding school he found himself in in Book 1 and travels through a portal into another dimension.
While many of the characters in Book 1 reappear in Book 2, this book can be read as a stand-alone – the first five pages give sufficient background to the situation Buttons finds himself in and introduces the characters. 8 – 12 year olds, both boys and girls who enjoy a good mystery with plenty of action, will enjoy this.
Buttons goes from one crisis to another, meets people he may or may not be able to trust, is helped by the gang of friends from Dorm 4 plus Lilly and has some success in his search for his parents – though not without endangering his own life.
NZ comedian Rhys Darby “who did the words and the pictures” has seemingly effortlessly captured the thought patterns of this 12 year old in a way that readers will relate to – Buttons admits his fears, his loneliness, and the stresses he faces. Deep breathing and quickly sketching flowers calm him. Writing lists and frequently referring to or modifying these are part of his way of surviving.
Word play in many forms keeps the reader grinning and barracking for Buttons and his friends against the forces of evil who are out to conquer our world.
With illustrations and maps throughout, different fonts, boxed words, speech bubbles and with messages in Morse Code, there is plenty to keep the reader involved.
Book 3 is hinted at – there is still one parent missing …
Darby has done it again. I read this to my 11 year old son and we were both hooked. We found it very hard to put this book down, constantly wanting to know what would happen next. A very enjoyable book to read to my son.
