Children won’t think spiders are quite as ugly and creepy after reading The Spider; on the contrary, they may actually think they’re cute. This very quick read features bold spider pictures accompanying vivid, eye-catching text. The text is a striking mix of a no-frills font, large block-lettered words (some shadowed for a 3-D look), and word bubbles, with all three kinds usually together on each page. All is set against a light dusty-green background. The spider images are not realistic--hence the cute factor.
Disappointingly, the artwork was “rendered digitally” or, more plainly stated, created on a computer. It’s hard to feel quite so admiring of a book that the author didn’t illustrate by her own hand; there’s the sense that anyone could research some facts, design some pictures using Photoshop, print them, staple everything together, and: children’s book in 30 minutes or less.
The best thing about the book is that it’s educational, but not overwhelmingly so; each page features one fact and no more, communicated in simple language: “After some spiders mate, the female spider will EAT THE MALE.” Some pictures are comical, as is the case here; others nicely aid in understanding.
Final verdict: An amusing, short little book worth the read that takes the scare factor out of one kind of arachnid (not insect).
NOTE: I received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy in March 2015.
This is one book from a series called, "Disgusting Critters".
My boys and I have read a few of these, and they always get a kick out of the content, illustrations, and humor. There is factual information about the spider in this book (and several things I didn't even know!), and it's also very silly to appeal to children.
The set would make a great gift.
An idea for fun at the office or next family gathering....
Thank you Netgalley for a free digital copy for review.
The Spider by Elise Gravel is nothing short of awesome. My kids snatched it off the table, read it TWICE, and bombarded me with spider facts (like sometimes the female eats the male after mating) before I even had a chance to open the cover. This book makes non-fiction more fun than I thought possible. It delivers facts accompanied by cute illustrations, and funny quips. I'm beyond excited that there are even more stories of "disgusting critters" in this series. Thanks for making a topic most little girls would run from fun to explore.
Love the art, and it is hilarious. I just wish she hadn't made a point of saying that spiders aren't insects and then twice in the book referred to "other insects" (ex: "she eats other insects") implying that spiders indeed ARE insects. Not a deal-breaker, obvs, but sort of confusing.
A transcript of our conversation after I finished reading this book to my kids
William (7): Are there more books like this? Me: I think so. Did you like it? William (very serious): I want to read it again. Me: Sure. We can read it tomorrow. William: No. I mean I want to read it again right now.
I feel like that's the kid equivalent of five stars :) Now off to request the rest in the series. Thanks, Elise Gravel, for writing such fun books!
I recently discovered this "Disgusting Critters" series, as my four year old loves anything regarding odd animals, insects, etc. A perfect blend of fact and silliness, with charming drawings to boot, I'm looking forward to reading the other titles. Up next for the kiddo and I is The Slug!
Pretty cute look at the spider. Full of lots of useful information. Doesn't exactly work because spiders are still gross and I will still squish any that make it into my house (if they are outside, I might let them live so that they can continue to eat mosquitoes)
I found Disgusting critters by Elise Gravel and I simply had to have them in the small school library I work in. I expected facts and entertainment and I was not dissapointed.
I have always been mortified by spiders so I was a bit scared to start reading this one, however it met all my expectations! Cute, funny, entertaining and full of knowledge! Cannot wait to start recommending the whole series to kids, I already know several who will love them. Too bad they have not been translated into Finnish as they would be on loan all the time. I am hoping for Disgusting critters to be an easy way to get the kids to try out their language skills and work as a gateway book to other books in English!
+1 point - generally refer to spiders as she[return][return]- 1/2 point - "eat other insects" after explaining that they're not insects. yes, I'm a pendant.[return][return]- 1 point - "pretty in princess shoes"[return]- 1 point - "I need a lot of eyeshadow"[return]- 1 point - something about carrying a purse[return][return]what even. anyway. the kids like it and it's just irritating and not full on offensive, so I won't disappear it. (The kids are 5 and 8)
This is a graphic novel which I am using for my genre project as well as I just generally like the style. I think personal option it shared some great facts about spiders in an interesting and kid friendly way. I liked the simplistic art of the book. However this book did seem to be gears towards a more traditionally girly crowd. You can see this not just in the colors used but also in the words and phrases when discussing the spider.
This is a great nonfiction series for preschool & early elementary kids. It talks about "gross" creatures and explains why they're so cool! It's silly and filled with lots of interesting facts.

Very charming, cute illustrations. Informative, but it would be nice if the species of spiders with interesting behaviors such as carrying their young or making web bubbles to breath underwater were named so that readers could look them up and learn more. Wonderful end papers.
Such a cute book for young readers about the basics of spiders. I absolutely adore the illustrations. My 3 year old giggled his way through this title and we look forward to the rest of the Disgusting Critters Series.
The Mushroom Club was such a hit we decided to get all the other books by this author that our library had and they are just as excellent. We learn interesting things, the humourous asides are fun and Kait loves the illustration style and wants to try to imitate it.
So very, very, very cute and filled with facts that will surprise beginning readers. How can I not buy the WHOLE series of books now? Can't wait to read more of these disgusting critters stories.
