The Masons #1

My Best Friend's Sister

Rate this book
I’m not an anxious person, but Quinn Draper has always made me nervous.

Okay, so that’s a lie. I am an anxious person. Always have been. And no one reminds me of that more than my brother’s best friend.

He’s the walking, talking opposite of my comfort zone, and he sees through my false bravado. Senses my insecurities. I think that’s why I feel so vulnerable when he’s around. So…under-clothed.

Which is ridiculous. He doesn’t even know me.

Still, every bone in my body senses danger when he’s around. Like he’s always about to push me under a spotlight I’m not ready to squint into, a spotlight that would expose me for the awkward introvert that I am.

Yet he never says more than two words to me. As if he knows that’s the surest way to drive me crazy.

And I hate him for it. Always have.

Always will.

I should have dnfed this one.

Not only he was a pretentious a*hole and she was the most accommodating person ever but you also could see the plot coming from ten miles away because you’ve probably read it a few hundred times already.

AAAAND there is no grovelling whatsoever 🤦🏻‍♀️

Maddy Mason, 25, just got offered an internship she’s dreamed about…except it’s unpaid. Her brother just offered up his apartment for her to live rent-free in while he’s out of town….except he lives with a buddy who Maddy thinks doesn’t like her.

Quinn Draper’s been enamored with his best friend’s sister since they were in college…except he’s a no-commitment guy who doesn’t want to get attached. But when living together brings the walls down, Quinn finds he’s faced with a version of himself he doesn’t recognize or know how to take.
“‘…I was an asshole who’d never even considered the idea of reforming, and you were a princess who couldn’t tell I was a prince.’
‘When did you go from being an asshole to a prince?’
‘The day I rearranged my kingdom for you.’”

Told via Maddy and Quinn’s alternating first person POV, these two had good banter right from the start so it wasn’t hard to get sucked into their story. I liked that even though Maddy didn’t always know how to take Quinn, she was upbeat and held her own. I also liked that even though Maddy is the “little sister character,” she wasn’t shy or virginal.

And the poker scene was the best…a total hoot. I adored it.

“If I was ever going to see Maddy Mason’s tits, I wanted it to be because I unwrapped her slowly in a situation where she felt like she was winning the whole time.”

Quinn was a complicated guy, but likeable just the same and a well developed character. As the reader, we get insight into what’s made Quinn Quinn, and my heart broke just a bit for the guy who deep down craved so much more but was “trained” not to show emotions.
“‘…he pretends to be this heartless badass, but I think he’s more like a puppy that’s been kicked so hard it’s forgotten how to cuddle.’”

That’s not to say I didn’t think he acted like a dick at a certain point, but he knew how to grovel and man did he know how to woo.
“I was going to be the gentleman she deserved, even if a few baseball socks had to die for the cause.”

This is the second book I’ve read from the author where the hero pulls out some swoon-worthy stops, and that kind of thing always makes romance great. It’s what’s romance is all about. So points for that.

I’m going to *spoiler alert* this next section because it gets into the later part of the book, but I can’t not give it credit because it comes through when so many other romances with this premise fail in the 21st century.

There are a lot of good messages in this story—from reaching for your professional goals to the importance of love and the people who matter most. On that note, I was prepared to cry over the letter, and while I did tear up, it was gold.

All in all, a low-angst, cute, feel-good romance, and it doesn’t skimp on the steam factor either.

Overall this book I think was not really for me because there was TOO MUCH INFORMATION!!!!!!! And I really like these sorts of story in which H is h's brother best friend but in this book there were unnecessary plot twists and long chapters which shouldn't exist but were there so overall not the book for me but maybe for others.

I am just a HUGE fan of Hazel's writing!

Yes, it's a trope we all now and most of us love (ME!!!), but I will never tire of reading each author's interpretation of it. But, being that Hazel is the author, I just knew it was going to me an awesome read!

I REALLY liked Maddy. She was just flawed enough to be real and believable, relatable. It's funny, actually, because her initial "acquaintanceship" with Quinn was built on the misconception that he hated her. Let me tell you how delicious the tension was as I patiently waited for that premise to fly outta the window!

Conversely, Quinn was more of the silent admirer from afar, keeping his feelings secret and torturing himself in the process. I absolutely adored how he thought of Maddy and the care he showed with her was just so...:::wistful sigh:::

Yep, another great and VERY steamy contemporary romance by Hazel! Keep 'em comin'!

(I was given this book in consideration of my honest thoughts)

Fans of New Adult romance novels of the type which have a primary focus on sex between twenty-something singletons in the city who consume multiple hits of hard liquor every day, overindulge in unhealthy, fattening food, rarely or never exercise, and yet somehow have gorgeous, fit, healthy bodies, will greatly enjoy this book. Those are standard fantasy features of many of the offerings in this contemporary, adult, romance subgenre, and this book fits very much within those reader-approved parameters. The writing itself in this novel is well done.

Well she's done it again! Another cracking book by Hazel Kelly!
Quinn is such a lovable arsehole you can't help but like him.
The storyline and the chemistry between the 2 got me totally lost in the moment and kept me up till the early hours reading.
Quinn is very closed off and keeps his feelings locked up due to his family life and tries to remain so untill his best friends sister Maddy moves in after being kicked out of her flat. Maddy has always thought Quinn hated her but he has secretly wanted her for a long time.
Loved the storyline, loved the characters, loved the writing so yeah basically I loved it 😊
Can't wait for Maddy's siblings stories next.

As the title of the book suggests, My Best Friend’s Sister features Quinn Draper, a successful sports agent, who has been smitten with Madeline, his best friend James’ younger sister, for years. I like that they are in their late 20s and not in college, and how tongue tied this normally very confident man was whenever he was around the object of his affection, who naturally is off limits.

If you read Hazel’s past books, love takes time and the slow burn will keep you engaged as the hero and heroine navigate their feelings and become friends first. When James heads off to London for a six-month business venture, a situation arises which forces her to take her brother’s place in his apartment, and how convenient that Quinn is his roommate. If only I could be so lucky!

Quinn is a dream. He works hard, is so thoughtful and kind, but a bid lost since his mom died and his father was a bit standoffish. I truly believe that how you are raised affects your view on life, and poor Quinn was the one who always sabotaged relationships before he could get too close. He guarded his heart, but was so romantic when it came to our sweet heroine. I just adored all the thoughtful dates he planned.

This book has great character development as Quinn and Madeline navigate their newfound status as lovers. I enjoyed all of the secondary characters as well and how honest they were when trying to help these two figure things out. I liked how dedicated she was to her career, how honest she was with him right from the start, and how they both supported each other and listened, truly caring about each other’s day.

But things aren’t always smooth sailing, and that’s when Hazel does her best writing in my opinion. She writes about true emotion and conflict, and all the raw feelings that people really go through when just meeting, dating, breaking up, moving on, or committing to one another. I love that her characters are mature enough to admit when they were wrong, ask for forgiveness, and learn from their mistakes, and not just the couples...the parents, siblings, and friends, too.

It really was beautiful to read some of these more emotional parts especially when Quinn was finally able talk to his dad who was also his boss, and let down his guard. My only wish is that his dad would have met Madeline, as he didn’t have any family other than Quinn.

I loved the letter that Quinn’s mom left him before she passed which was only to be read when he finds the one; it was really moving and helped clarify his future goals.

There were many special moments in My Brother’s Best Friend, including the last chapter which ended with a HEA. Looking forward to the next romance by Hazel Kelly and hoping that James gets his chance at happiness and that we can get more of Quinn and Madeline!

This is my first Hazel Kelly ARC, and I've finally finished reading. It was sitting in my Kindle for awhile because I had a bunch of ARC's that was time sensitive.

I love discovering new authors. She reminds me of A.M Hargrove, Staci Hart and Lauren Blakely.

Falling in love with your brother's best-friend/room-mate isn't something I haven't before, but it gave me thrills nonetheless. I'm a huge romantic sap so this right up my alley. You can't help who you fall in love with... whether it's the asshole next door, your sworn enemy or your best-friend's youngest sister. The heart wants what the heart wants.

It's a feel-good story... it's an easy and light read, and there are parts that will pull on your heartstrings.

This was my first Hazel Kelly book and I don't know why I waited so long. Her writing takes you on the journey of the characters. Maddy and Quinn are adorable. When her and her roommate aren't seeing eye to eye, her brother offers his room while he is working in London for six months. Maddy believes her brother's best friend/roommate Quinn doesn't like her because he never says much to her. Surprise, surprise, once these two become roommates the sparks start flying. Their story is funny, full of love, with some surprises, giving me a few tears. These two stole my heart.

I’m promoting this book’s hero to my favorite book boyfriend. Quinn is just the absolute most romantic, sweetest guy. He is enamored with his best friend’s sister but never acted on it. In turn, Maddy actually kind of hated Quinn. But she needs a place to crash for awhile and her brother (Quinn’s roommate) is moving overseas for awhile so it was convenient for her to move in. Quinn was pretty excited but Maddy was wary. She really didn’t know him and what she did made her uncomfortable. He’s known to be cold and aloof and had a history of being a womanizer.

The book alternates points of views between the two. It’s so awesome to hear Quinn’s thoughts. The things he wants to say are beyond sweet. Every girl should be treasured the way Maddy is by him. I would quote some of these things but out of context, I don’t think it would sound as awesome.

The book is longer than average. Probably didn’t need to be as long but I didn’t mind because it was so enjoyable. Saccharine sweet. Most of it is them building their relationship. The only real conflict is Quinn suddenly realizing he’s a changed man - a man in love. There’s a chapter where he gets advice from someone that made me cry. It was again very sweet. I don’t want to spoil anything so that’s all I’ll say but it is the reason I jumped from 3.5 to 4 stars.

If you just want to be romanced, definitely read this.

Quinn likes his life on the edge with his ladies they know from the start he is a heartbreaker but it don't stop them wanting that 1 night with him. Quinn is afraid of commitment as soon as girls look to be getting clingy they he bolts in the opposite direction to open the door to make sure it don't hit the ladies on the butt when he say cya. Not 1 woman can compare to his dream girl always in the back of his mind and that where she will stay cos she is off limits and my best friends little sister. He hasn't said more than hello to her in passing cos he don't trust himself to not say the wrong thing like I like you or worse and that been for years. Its all working fine till James needs to move to London for 6 months and his sister needs a place to live for a while.

Maddy needs a place to stay her living arrangements suck right now and if she wants to take the internship she was just offered then she has to take her brothers offer to move into his room while he is away for 6 months. Theres just 1 catch his super hot super sexy best friend lives there too oh and I say she hates him cos she thinks he has some sort of problem wither hence the not talking to her like almost ever in her eyes. As she has no choice but to do this or she will always wonder what her life would be like if she didn't take a leap and accept the internship. It fast becomes clear they both have feelings for each other but the while Quinn battles it in his mind his heart can help but pounce while Maddy knows his history and is reluctant to his charm she cant help but leap either.
Can this last forever? will Quinn be able to get past the commitment issues and what will James have to say about it?

I love the relaxed pace this story went in it wasn't over done there story not over told nothing was rehashed to bump up the word count. The detailing was perfect and all the characters fit well I would love to see James get a book and also maeve too they both need to find happiness.

Hazel Kelly you rock lady love your books and the way you bring them to life.

From the moment they met Quinn Drapper has always made Maddy feel a little nervous, he always keeps his distance, and often makes her feel like he doesn't really like her... but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Little does she know the eternal bachelor has it bad for her, but his friendship with her brother keeps him from letting his feelings show. Dating your best friends little sister goes against every rule in the bro code book!

But when she moves into her brothers apartment, that he shares Quinn, things start to take an unexpected turn... one that could land them in deep with her brother!

My Best Friend's Sister is a delightfully entertaining forbidden romance that will have you captivated from the first chapter to the last. These two are thrown together unexpectedly when Maddy's brother offers up his apartment to her while he is away for business for the next few months. She instantly has her reservations about moving in with Quinn, especially since he makes her feel so unsettled, and is often closed off to her. But she is stuck between a rock and a hard place so she accepts the apartment offer anyhow, and hopes they can survive being in close quarters with one another. Watching these two tiptoe around one another and their feelings was tough on the ticker, the "will they, won't they" game they played had me dying in anticipation. This one impressed on all fronts, the words were well penned and riddled with feeling, and the characters came with a real feel quality that made it easy to connect to them and their situation. Definitely one of my favorite first reads this year! I highly recommend you get your hands on this one, you won't be disappointed with what you discover between the pages here, it's words will do your heart SO good!!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.

My Best Friend's Sister, The Masons Book 1, Hazel Kelly

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: General Fiction (Adult), Romantic comedy

I borrowed this on KU. Its a fun read, very light and easy to follow but it lacked the depth for me of a four/five star read. Its what is says, a fun rom-com.

Maddie is a sweet girl, ambitious and doing an unpaid intern position for three months . That really makes me cross so many folk have to do free work just to get a foot in the door, how are they supposed to live? Luckily for Maddie her brother is away for a while so she can stay in his flat. Unluckily for Maddie that also means staying with her brothers best friend Quinn, a guy she's always had feelings for though they are confused, but who treats her as not really there, barely speaking to her.
Of course that changes when she moves in and his reasons become clear, its because he's attracted to her but Big Brother has warned him off. Playboy Quinn is not who he wants his little sister dating....I have an elder brother and when I was in my teens he did the same, warned his mates to stay away :-)
I enjoyed reading about Maddie's intern issues, they felt very true to life, especially what happens to fellow work colleague Jin. I could see things playing out exactly like that. Quinn and his father, and the company and Quinn's feeling about it were interesting. I wonder how many other family companies have similar issues? I did feel Quinn blew hot and cold with Maddie very
Overall it was a fun read, very easy to get along with but lacking in deep drama for me. It depends on what you're in the mood for I guess, and your personal feelings. I'm a drama lover, others just want to relax with an easy read. If that's you then this book is perfect for that.

Stars: three, perfect for those that want a simple, relaxing read.

KU read.

Not one of Kelly's best.

In the prologue and through some of the internal monologues that Maddy/Madeline has, relationship between Quinn and Maddie has been portrayed as tense and filled with awkward moments and unease.

Understandable especially if there is an age gap between her brother James and Maddy that would then impact her ability to interact freely with her brother's friends as well.

Till they actually start living together, Maddy appears not to have much of a history of any camaraderie with either Quinn or her brother's 2 other friends, Tanner and Pete.

But within a week, she plays strip poker with them. Yeah, strip poker and she removes her bra and even asks Quinn to blow on her panties.
Weird? Yeah.
Something you would never expect to happen between 3 guys and their best friend's little sister - YEAH.

Also lets not forget that this is the same girl who was blushing and thinking too much about swiping right on her Tinder and matching with Quinn.
Its hard to believe that in a week, she changed so much that she will ask him to blow/sniff her panties right in front of her brother's 2 other best friends.

What kinda effed up friendship does James have with his 3 friends anyway that they would play strip poker with his little sister a week after he has left???

And how is this leading to a whole romantic situation between Quinn and Maddy?

Worst written romance ever is what I think.

I absolutely LOVED this book. Quinn and Maddy might be my favorite Hazel Kelly characters to date. I loved how closed off Quinn was because he didn't really know how to show emotion...his father taught him "that's not what men do" so anytime he got close to anyone he pushed them away, with the exception of James. The friendship he had with James was great. I loved their banter. Hazel excels at writing witty banter. If you want a good giggle while you're reading, she's your girl. The attraction between Maddy and Quinn was pretty obvious and I liked that Quinn didn't try to hide it...he made it pretty known to her that he liked her. I also really liked seeing Maddy come into her own. I liked how she took that internship because she knew it would be the best thing for her future career in fashion and also how she didn't shy away from Quinn. I loved how she made him catch feelings. Everything unfolded really nicely and even the dreaded "how are we going to break it to James" was done really well. Hazel Kelly always creates characters and story lines that are so relatable that you want to just jump right in the pages and be friends with them. I have a good feeling James is going to get his story and I can't wait for that!!

Once I started this book, I.could.not.put.it.down. Quinn is a sexy as sin, cartoon sock wearing, lady’s man. Forever single, never wanting to be tied down, never wanting to be in a relationship, playing the field for all he’s worth, player. But there’s also a sweet side to him, a side that only comes out for one woman, Maddie. Maddie is the the baby of the family and she’s trying desperately to find her way in the world. She’s beautifully sexy, determined and highly motivated. She thinks her brother‘s best friend Quinn is simply indifferent to her. Little does she know that he has a crush on her and has had one for a very long time. Having friend zoned Maddie because she is his best friend’s sister he’s never allowed himself to think that something could come of his attraction to her. But when Maddie is desperate and needs a place to live she moves into her brother’s apartment while he’s away for work. An apartment by the way, he shares with Quinn. Let.the.games.begin. This book is incredible and proves once again why Hazel Kelly is one of my go to authors for hot and sexy reads. She’s a wonderful storyteller and a great character builder. I just love her writing style and this book should be a must read for everyone. (I read an ARC and decided to leave a review).

I always get excited when I see Hazel has a new book coming out. Her storytelling ability is second to none. Her romances are always heartfelt, infused with humor, have great character depth and development and always leave you smiling. Quinn Draper finds himself with a new roommate and the person he least expected, his best friend's little sister Maddy. Quinn has always felt something for Maddy but never acted on his feelings due to the bro code. However, Maddie becomes way too tempting to refuse once they are alone and living together.

The heat gets turned up, however Quinn is plagued with guilt for towards his best friend. He is also confused by his new found feelings and does not know how to handle being in a relationship. Maddy must now decide if he is worth fighting for or if what they had could be treated as a roommates with benefits casual hookup that expires when her brother returns from overseas. This was so good, I wanted to dislike Quinn for his robot style feelings, but his heart was too big to not fall in love with him. I thought this was another amazing read. I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

Fun and entertaining

My Best Friend's Sister is the first book in a new series by Winter Renshaw. It is the story of Maddie and Quinn, her brother's best friend and roommate. Quinn is a playboy but he really has feelings for Maddie. However, he will not act on them as she is totally off-limits. Maddie has feelings for Quinn but thinks he does not like her because of the way he keeps treating her, or rather ignores her. Things start to get complicated though when Maddie moves into the apartment while her brother is away for a few months.

I enjoyed this book as it was entertaining but was also a bit disappointed. For me I was expecting a lot more banter and some biting sexy banter back and forth between Maddie add Quinn. Plus he was a bit all over the place with his emotions about Maddie and their relationship. So for me it was a pleasant story to read but it did not blow me away.

I received a free ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.

Some time ago - Hazel Kelly asked if I minded if she used my surname for one of her characters. Of course I said I'd love that!

Enter Quinn Draper! Gorgeous, rich, troubled yet so ready for the love of a good woman. Enter the little sister of his best pal - a shy yet feisty young "Maddy" who is completely off-limits. Yeah right - of course they would get together! The road isn't always smooth... but it's such a ride following their adventures. Oh and if you are not blubbing like a fool when Quinn reads a particular letter - then you have no heart! I'm not ashamed to admit that I was a tear-stained and snotty mess.

Yet again Hazel has knocked it out of the park - and I devoured the book in 3 evenings. Can't wait for the next one - and I'm really hoping that James will find love in one of her future books too!

Disclaimer: I was provided with a free copy of this book in return for an honest review. At no time were the five stars asked for - I simply feel this book warranted them.

Amount of sex 3 / 5
How explicit are the sex scenes 3.5 / 5
Story 4.5 / 5
Overall: 4.5 / 5

My Best Friend’s Sister is the first book in the Masons series written by author Hazel Kelly.  This forbidden romance tells the story of Maddy and Quinn.  Quinn’s best friend, James, is heading to London for 6 months, and his sister, Maddy, will be staying at his apartment while he’s gone. Quinn is a known player and goes through women like tissues. Maddy is shy and anxious, and she’s been appreciating Quinn from afar.   They’re completely opposite, but for some reason, they can’t seem to keep their minds off of each other.

My Best Friend’s Sister is well written, steamy, and funny! I quickly got into the storyline and had trouble putting it down!  It’s a definite add to your TBR list!

This was the first book I have read by Hazel Kelly and I was pleasantly surprised. Maddy is a strong-willed, determined, go-getter kind of girl. She has 'the glass is half-full' personality. She doesn't let much get her down and if something does break her down she pushes through it. However, when you fall in love, the words your lover says are always taken to heart. Quinn is a drool-worthy, alpha male. He respects his best friend's wishes, but even the strongest can only resist their attraction for so long. It was wonderful to see the great lengths Quinn would go to to make Maddy happy. The banter, sexual tension, and love this couple share left me with warm, gooey insides. This is a feel-good romance with little angst.

My Best Friend's Sister was a fantastic book to read. I will admit that I went into this book thinking that it was going to be sex, sex and more sex. And there was a lot of sex....once Maddie and Quinn got down to it. But, other than that, it was a sweet book about falling in love. I loved Quinn (he was in touch with his feelings about Maddie from the beginning) and I loved Maddie (she fought her feelings for Quinn and then fought for him). There were parts I cheered and parts I cried. I can't wait for the next book in the series!!

Hazel always has a way of drawing me and holding me captive. I am a true sucker for anthing second chances, and believe me when I say Hazel does not disappoint with Quinn and Maddy. There was no way I could not fall in love with their strong will, quirky, sassy, yet softer vulnerable sides..

As always I cannot wait to see what Hazel has in store for us next...

When circumstances bring James's little sister and his best friend, Quinn, to be roommates while James takes an extended work trip out of the country, he never expected them to become much more than friends. This story took many unexpected turns before the HEA but it did get there. The most touching scenes, which I won't spoil for you, are a revealing one between Quinn and his father, and the beautiful letter left for Quinn by his long deceased mother explaining the nature of love and how to nurture it, that I plan to share with my own sons. A beautiful story with some rough patches to travel through to get the happy ending we all love.

I received a free ARC of this novel via Hidden Gems in exchange for an honest review. My opinion is my own.

I have read several books by Ms Kelly and this one did not fail to impress. For an easy reading romance the characters had surprising depth that I enjoyed immensely. The plot was decent and I had problems functioning today because all I wanted to do was finish this story. I have already downloaded the next book onto my kindle. It will be finished tomorrow.

The letter from Quinn’s mom is everything

My Best Friend’s Sister is a good book and has everything you’d expect from the title. What sets it apart is the letter from Quinn’s mom. That letter should be required reading for every person falling in love. I swear, it spoke to my soul and made me weepy because it is exactly how I wish things were for me. You’ll know what I mean when you read it.

God was this boring. It could have been sooooo much better. The "close proximity" and "best friend's sister" trope was strong here. AND I felt like it started off really well. Then, it was just annoying. One minute he's wooing her, and then I turn the page, it's the next chapter and a new day. It's like half the book is missing. Like all the good parts were edited out. I planned on reading the next 2 installments, but I've changed my mind. I was really let down here.
