The first 50 pages or so make you really think about traditional business strategy and what the author proposes as such. The approach is much more pragmatic and simple than other approaches I have seen. It not all technical as there is certainly a level of art to strategy and I suspect style as well.
It's a great approach and one I will certainly give much thought to over the following months.
Read this as part of my class with Chuck. An amazing book and a great way to look at strategy. 10/10 would recommend, and will certainly read again as I start my career in strategy
The second edition of Dr. Chuck Bamford’s The Strategy Mindset 2.0: A Practical Guide to the Design and Implementation of Strategy is one of the key practical texts directing company’s in formulating effective and forward thinking strategies. Bamford points out with some justification how his book avoids the assortment of clichéd gimmicks defining such texts and, instead, concentrates itself on providing interested readers in a solid framework for building and sustaining a strategically successful culture with genuine staying power. Bamford backs up his ideas and advice with voluminous research and a firm sense of self lending a further layer of conviction to his conclusion. Even if he didn’t have the quantifiable results backing him up, Bamford never sounds unconvincing.
Even a brief perusal of the book shows plenty of reason why Bamford has enjoyed such success in the field. The planning and structure behind The Strategy Mindset possesses withering focus on significant details and lacks any hint of digression. Even passages where Bamford speaks for a more direct personal perspective than others, confidence in the thoroughness of his approach colors his prose. The book unfolds for readers in a linear and lucid way; each subject, however multi-faceted, seems to flow into the next, and attentive readers will never feel lost in the text or overwhelmed by tides of information.
The considered rollout of his ideas contrasts with the aforementioned “voice” behind his prose. You don't often read works of this nature where individuality shines through, but Bamford has a clear thirst to see his collaborators succeed. He has obvious disdain for those who simplify the issues inherent to formulating and implementing productive strategies, but it never rises to insulting levels. He stands on his data and convictions in a way that holds readers attention.
The book’s paperback edition doesn’t even surpass the two hundred page mark. This makes Bamford’s accomplishments all the more impressive considering the limited canvas he allows himself for fleshing out his ideas. Bamford, in truth, sees the key to sustained strategic success as boiling down to a handful of key attributes individuals and companies alike refine and develop through practice but, arguably, the most critical one he identifies is consistency. This is the hallmark trait – without it, men and corporations alike twist in the wind, vision dims, and profits drop.
Another important aspect of the book, perhaps understated in some eyes, is Bamford’s understanding of human nature – particularly human psychology within a commercial context. He has innate insight into why those in leadership positions often make the decisions they do, for good and ill, and this clarity gives him the latitude to identify the strengths and weaknesses inherent with those respective approaches. The Strategy Mindset 2.0: A Practical Guide to the Design and Implementation of Strategy never belabors its points or wastes reader’s time with high gloss low-reward yammering. It advocates for rigorous discipline yet bursts out for readers with irrepressible spirit that makes the process of conceiving creative strategies seems something like the sport of kings and queens.
The author takes a no-nonsense approach to simplifying strategy, which is makes it easily understandable, and immediately actionable. Highly recommend!
