Though the words and tunes may be entrenched in memory, Schmidt sheds new light on these hymns, inviting us to think about the texts through various lenses of scripture, faith, and personal experience. His reflections are painstakingly honest about how and when he has come up short as a follower of Christ—as well as how he each time, he finds notes of forgiveness, love, and hope in these familiar songs.

Our rector gave each of the choir this book. I read it chapter by chapter as a devotional (40 chapters). Each short chapter gives the text of an old hymn and Richard Schmidt's response. I enjoyed his viewpoint and often took away something to reflect upon for the day.

Used this for an adult Christian formation group in the church, co-taught by me and the music director. It was so much fun! We all learned a lot.
