Daughters of Midnight #5

Midnight Secrets

Rate this book
There are many dark secrets in the village of Ames Crossing, Illinois...

To the locals, Amanda Beaumont is the classy and soft spoken librarian who dates Deputy Zakary Parker. She lives quietly, content with her cat and cherished books in the old house at the base of the cliffs. But, the truth is nothing like it seems as Amanda is actually a daughter of Midnight, and the keeper of a chilling heritage.
Amanda is a Guardian, and duty bound to protect the village. If you thought she was scary when your library books were overdue, you should see her at her other job. In her secret profession she takes on only the most severe paranormal cases, and battles the evilest of foes...
The closer she gets to Zakary, the more complications her duty causes her. Preserving the illusion of the reserved librarian is playing hell on her romance with the deputy. As a Guardian, her calling requires that she maintain her cover, and keep the paranormal world hidden from the public.
But secrets, even old ones, have a way of revealing themselves. Can Zakary accept the truth of who she really is? Or will the kind and handsome Deputy be her undoing?

Deliciously warrior, witchy goodness!!!!

Firstly if you've NOT yet read books 1-4 then RUN, don't walk to read them now! Otherwise you won't fully understand everything going on! In this book it centers around Amanda the town librarian we briefly met in book 4 with the surprise ghostly possessions of Chauncey and Estrella. SURPRISE!! Way to blow your librarian cover to a certain few! In this book once again secrets are uncovered , even though everyone thought the secrets from the Marquart mansion had finally been uncovered since the shocking possession of Chauncey/Estrella. Guess everyone thought wrong. Estrella had befriended Amanda after "the incident" immediately feeling a connection. She initially assumed it was because Amanda too was magick worker...and a mighty powerful one at that! Amanda and generations of her family have his what they actually did for this town for centuries. Even Estrella doesn't fully know all. I absolutely love the themes in this book being girl power, family.... Whether by blood or choice, and magick. Yes it's a theme, but primarily it's inherently a book about love. Love of family, romantic love, and parental love.... And at the center of it all is one fierce, bada$$ woman that gives all she has to protect innocents, her loved ones, and the all unknowing entire town. Truly F I E R C E in every way. The town had no clue the self sacrifice she and her family have endured for generations. Never allowing her true "mask" to show for fear it might endanger someone, especially someone she cares for or even loves! Then she met Estrella and all those same masks start coming down. I know there's one more book coming as the final one one in the series focusing on Estrella/Chauncey.... However if I can have a wish come true it would be for Brooke to get either a novella or book of her own shown a few years down the line. Thus letting us see how Daniella, all the aunts/uncles, and everyone are doing. Not to mention how she's likely grown into an amazingly powerful magick user. Just saying... It would be like a big bow on the best present 😉.

I love all the Midnight's, but Amanda is one of a kind. She gives Xena the Warrior Princess a run for her money!! Fighting all these years to protect strangers, friends and loved ones in secret from all form of evil. Never letting her true mask fall lest It cause harm to them merely by having said knowledge of what she does after hours. I liken her character as a brilliant cross between the Sarah Michelle Gellar, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the main character from the TNT series a while back called WITCHBLADE.
(IF you've never watched Witchblade I highly suggest renting it! It was also a comic, but the show was genius! The scene in this book where Amanda sewed magickal runes into her cuffs and how they came to life STRONGLY for protection completely reminds me of the main character in Witchblade...Sarah who I think was a cop suddenly gains a bracelet. Except when near evil or other times, it morphs into full on armor up her arm and into a sword! Just saying... Amanda DEFINITELY reminds me of a cross between the two characters 😊💖. This book has secrets, mystery, action, suspense, flirting, love, family and oh soooooo much more!!! I'm already on tenterhooks wanting book six!! I literally LUCKED into finding book one and proceeded in devouring in in only a few hours. Upon finishing book one I IMMEDIATELY went online and got all available books that were out at the time in the series... Then proceeded to sit and read back to back until completed LOL. This is a highly addictive series for a reason.....because it has heart. I for one can't wait to see the next in this series. Goodness I hope this review was ok. I'd already written the review that I loved, but after hitting a different unintended key on my kindle instead of hitting submit EVERYTHING vanished. Grrrrr.... so this was the best I could do from memory 😊. i just hope I did this book and series a review worthy of it! This series is on so worth trying from memory 💖

I just can't get enough of Ellen Dugan's books. I love how she takes one character in the first book and then the next book goes to the sibling or a cousin, etc. as the main character. Another great read.

Spellbound

Another masterpiece by Ellen Dugan. One of those novels I couldn’t put down and never wanted to end. I am waiting patiently for book six. The characters make you feel and recall the mixed emotions that one experiences when falling in true love for the first time as well as dealing with family loyalties even when arcane information is exposed. The composition of supernatural, white magick and romance intertwined are core in the story that brings about the reader to stay spellbound . Ellen Dugan is one of my favorite authors.

An unlikely protector

Yes it better than the last book and centres on the town's librarian and the newly found cousin. But for a librarian who prides herself on her knowledge she sure was a bit slow on the uptake of a few major clues thrown at her. Mild mannered librarian is the face she shows to the world but behind it is the guardian / protector of the town. She is following family traditions trying to atone for the sins of an ancestor. The witch that caused the death of the missing bride's husband. Add in possession, a deputy who has problems reconciling his version of her to her true self, a DNA test, several angry spirits and family. Will they find out why the ghosts are so active? What will reading the journals show her? Will the deputy ever accept her? Why was the young boy's death hidden? How will she now fit in?

Another fascinating story weaving the paranormal and romance together. Amanda and Zakary make the perfect couple, yet Amanda has secrets. Secrets she rather keep to herself, except that won't happen. More secrets are revealed, more family members are found and DNA testing has a few surprises for several people. Its a fun ride with the daughters of Midnight.

This one is my favorite so far in the series. Ms. Dugan’s ability to introduce new characters and fresh story lines while still keeping you up to date on the familiar, well loved characters is what makes this series so delightful. Keep writing Ms. Dugan, your books are magickal!
