Angela Cannon-Crothers’ essays explore our natural world with scientific inquiry and poetic wonder in an era of changing environments, seasons, and climate. As an ecologist and a passionate observer, she writes on subjects that range from canoe guiding to foraging, from gardening to homesteading to teaching children to enjoy the outdoors. Her words will guide you along a trail of curiosity, illuminating your own journeys into nature.
I absolutely loved this book! It took almost a year, as I savored the essays and only read one season at a time, to coincide with the actual seasons. And that was a remarkable stroke of luck!
I bought the book last summer at Cumming Nature Center in Naples, NY. As I flipped through, I saw that it was broken into four seasons, so I began with Summer. I read one essay per day so I could really absorb and think about them, then waited for the next season to begin reading the next section.
I’ve just finished Spring. And the last essay for Spring is honestly a beautiful end to this excellent collection of essays!
Wonderful nature writing, detailed information about plants, animals, mushrooms, and ourselves. Highly recommend.
This book has been on my desk for a long time waiting to be read! I just finished it this evening. I had the great pleasure of meeting the author (Angela Cannon) at a writing workshop in the Adirondacks (and am very much looking forward to our next workshop!). Her book is packed full of facts, knowledge, memories, musings, philosophy, and wonderful, creative, rich prose ... on a scale that starts ever-so-local-to-the-Finger-Lakes and broadens to the whole universe. You should read this book no matter where you live!
My very favorite chapter was titled How to Savor the Last Dregs of Summer, which was so creative and charming.
