Humans were made to be in a relationship with God. This relationship has many aspects, and God speaks to us in many ways. One of the primary ways he speaks to and relates with us comes from spending time in the Scriptures. Throughout its history, the church has held that the Scriptures have been given by God to us and that as we read and study them God speaks with us. As the Scriptures are read, communion with God happens and those who meet with God come to know him in an intimate way.Since God chooses to meet with us and make himself known to us we need to create opportunities for this growing intimate knowing to occur. The ancient Christian spiritual practice of Lectio Divina or “sacred reading” helps create the time, space, and opportunities for this knowing God to occur. On one level, Lectio Divina is simply a manner of reading, meditating, praying and contemplating God through the Scriptures, but unsurprisingly, in light of God’s mysterious desire to commune with us, when we practice this rhythm; God meets with and interacts with us personally.
