کتاب دارای هفت مقاله است که ادامه هویت ایرانی را با پذیرش دین اسلام توضيح می‌دهد. زبان فارسی ادامه پیدا کرد، دین عوض شد و هویت ایرانی نیز دوباره پرورده شده. همچنین فرهنگ ایرانی با خشکسالی شدید در قرون وسطی دوباره تضعیف شد. مقالاتی نیز درباره هنر و ادبیات فارسی هم در این کتاب گنجانده شده است که اثر آن را بر هنر اروپایی نشان می‌دهد.

کتاب هفت فصل دارد و از یک مجموعه بزرگتر انتخاب و ترجمه شده است.
نام کتاب ارتباطی با برآمدن اسلام ندارد. حتی آخرین مقاله کتاب به منابعی از سال ۱۸۰۰ میلادی می پردازد.
ترجمه کتاب متاسفانه خوب و یکدست نیست و در بعضی مواقع گنگ و غیر قابل فهمیدن است.
مقاله ها هم قدیمی و بیشتر خلاصه ای از کارهای قبلی نویسندگانشان است.
مقاله اول هرچند از استاد احسان یارشاطر است اما ضعیف ترین مقاله کتاب هم است. اما مقاله های درخشان و موضوعات بسیار بدیعی هم دارد. مقاله دوم کتاب در مورد بقای ایرانیت بسیار هنرمندانه است و مقاله آخر کتاب هم بسیار خوب است.
در کل خیلی دنبال این کتاب نباشید. اگر امکانش بود بخرید و بخوانید.

این جلد مجموعه ایده ایران به اندازه بقیه خوب نبود ولی مقاله ای که درباره تاثیر هنر ساسانی بر نگاره های اسلامی داشت واقعا جالب و تامل برانگیز بود

From this book you get an idea of the cyclical rise, fall and sometimes rejuvenation of cultures.

An exhausted Sasanid Iran fell to the Arabs, but this was not the end of their story. Surprisingly, this turn of events provided fresh impetus to the sustenance and proliferation of Iranian ideals , norms and innovations across agriculture, technology and administration in the new Islamic reality.

It was not entirely a tale of insidious, reverse conquest from within, by the Iranians. One can also see how the infusion of Arabo-Islamic ideas changed the functioning and outlook of Iranian society forever.
