Girls who dare – Inside every wallflower is the beating heart of a lioness, a passionate individual willing to risk all for their dream, if only they can find the courage to begin. When these overlooked girls make a pact to change their lives, anything can happen.
Ten girls – Ten dares in a hat. Who will dare to risk it all?
To Ride with the Knight
A reckless beauty… Lady Helena Adolphus is no stranger to scandal. Her brother may be a duke, but his black reputation once threatened her own chances of making a good match. Now returned to the bosom of the ton, Helena is feted and courted as much for her loveliness and wild green eyes as for her hefty dowry. Yet the eligible bachelors leave her cold and respectability is deadly dull. There is only one man who makes her pulse leap, and she knows she’d be a fool to pursue him.
A ruthless man… Gabriel Knight understands desperation. Born into poverty and raised in a foundling home, Gabriel used every opportunity to claw his way out of the gutter. Now one of the wealthiest men in England, wicked Knight is dismayed to discover his success has not bought him happiness. Restless and bored, he blames his ennui on the pompous aristocrats he despises, those who still close doors in his face.
An imprudent affair… Though Helena is aware of Gabriel’s animosity for the ton that shuns him, the sinful man tempts her beyond all reason. He is out to ruin her, and she knows it, but her stupid pride won’t let her back down from each scandalous challenge he sets her.
As the heat of attraction flares hotter between them, the risk of getting burned only makes riding with the Knight ever more enticing.

My review :
Will he ever be enough, him the fatherless boy, for the lofty woman who shaken his world ...
I confess Helena was not my favorite in the daring girls group, as Minerva at the beginning. She is a Duke’s daughter and sister, so she lacked of nothing, so what could be interesting in her, while Gabriel, I like a man who raised himself from the gutter. Plus Helena’s book happens to come in between me and Matilda and Montagu’s story! My heart and eyes are only marked on July, 3rd. Thus she entered the scene of this book with quite an impediment.
Why I didn’t really care about a socialite and a social-climbing businessman, both are well-turned in their own world, yet once more, Mrs Leech did wonder, she paired two successful people together, still them being born from each side of the blanket, they are perfectly unsuitable in the gaze of the ton, it does not stop them as each one stirs a longing in the other, to be seen just once for whom they are in their inner core.
Pride and stubbornness are what linked them at the beginning, until they show they failing and hidden wounds. I am not sure I liked Helena to poke him at every turn, like if she could not forgive him to not fan at her feet like her many suitors. When she is quite courageous to go after the man she wants, she has her doubts but better make him angry than not be seen. I began to really warm to their plight when it seemed only dents and holes happened on their journey toward another, how being born on one side of the fence would influence one’s whole life, whom to encounter, what to do, where to go and whom to live with ...
At half mark, I was completely sucked in the book, and glad it was a rest day. The road trip part of the book was so sweet, fun and moving with its alternating to Matilda’s struggles. How I hate Mrs Leech, I was so certain to dislike Montagu, but with her few last books, she shows how much more of him there is instead of the haughty icy mask he presents to the world. And now my heart aches for him and the little boy who was robbed of love since his childhood. I am glad he has Phoebe to cheer him in his darkest days.
Oh my, how I love the bout of letters at each chapter’s opening, I even wish there would be more chapters in each book.
One more five stars read when I began it just because I needed to see how things would progress on Matilda and Montagu’s side, and finished it with tears in my eyes for Helena and Gabe.
And now, when book 11 is since long preordered, imagine my surprise when I checked the series and discovered there will be a twelfth book, but then, who will be the heroine?!
THIS IS NOT A STAND ALONE!! I didn't realize "To Ride with the Knight" was the 10th story in a series. This explains my confusing. After reading about 50 pages it seemed like I was missing something. I was expected to know what the author was talking about. I think there should have been some back story. The story starts out with Little Miss Phoebe Barrington whose age is never revealed and Matilda Hunt and Lucian Barrington Marquess of Montagu. So of course I thought the story was about them.. Also if Phoebe was the granddaughter of a Duke wouldn't she be Lady Phoebe instead of Miss Phoebe? This is very confusing start of a story.
We then jump to Gabe Knight one of the richest men in England but he is a by blow and his in business. Rejected by the Ton as not being a gentlemen he seeks to find a wife who will help him enter the Ton. Lady Helena Adolphus daughter of a Duke and sister of the current Duke Robert. This is who the story is really about.
Who are the Peculiar Ladies? The story never really explains how this group of ladies came together.
All I can say is that To Ride With The Knight "IS NOT A STAND ALONE"!! You need to read the entire series to understand this story.
I never understood why Montagu and Matilda couldn't be together it is obvious they love each other. Since there story is free on kindle unlimited I will chance and read it.
I did like little Phoebe and I loved Gabe Knight he just wanted to be excepted. I came to like Helena too . There devotion and loves does manage to shine through.
It was fun and it was madcap, a respectable 10th addition to the series. Lady Helena Aldophus is the daughter of a Duke, she's privileged, beautiful, protected but she's also headstrong, vivacious and so not interested in the titled men presented to her at every ball.
Enter Gabriel Knight, a self-made man, a bastard who grew up in an orphanage and clawed his way to the top. He hates the nobility and yet he can't seem to keep Helena out of his mind.
She challenges him and soothes him. He has struggles with self worth and she shows him that she cares about him. The thing about this story is that you really do have to read the previous books to get to know the characters and I think that's what makes each book better.
This is book about love and acceptance. It's about things feeling impossible or improbable but working out in the end. I really enjoyed the roadtrip element because we got to see how the couple actually would be spending time together, how they respond in sometimes trying situations, I felt that really showed that together they could be strong.
One of the more beautiful moments is Gabe handing the reins to Helena and her realising the depth of his trust and belief in her.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Helena is beautiful, vivacious and daring! Gabe has brought himself up from the gutter to be one of the richest men in London! A Dukes sister Helena can have any man! Gabe catches her eye and he is the forbidden fruit! It's no secret he wants to marry well he's tried to ignore Helena never quiet believing he has a chance! Once he gives himself a chance to see if Helena is simply toying with him well all bets are off! Gabe thinks Helena is some spoiled miss wanting to play in the slums in the dark as so many of the women he's bedded! They will never acknowledge him in public! Helena is different she wants to get to know him the real Gabe! But Robert absolutes refuses and then all bets are off! She wins her dare but does she loose the man? The best one yet, you will laugh, cry and cheer for their HEA!!
This one was tough to rate, because while I enjoyed the main story it felt a bit off. It started out very madcap and full of humor and then the male protagonist became a totally different person. And lets not even talk about the fact that 2 books back, Inigo acted like he hated this guy and in the very next book was suddenly his best friend. In any case, the Matilda storyline was brought to a fever pitch and I cannot wait to start the next book. That story arc has been masterful.
While Im at it, I can't help but question the reviewers who gave this book lower ratings because they didnt realize it was the 10th book in a series. What the heck is wrong with people?! How on earth is it the author's fault that you didnt read the title or the preface? Please people, use some common sense. Reviews are only as valuable as we make them.
I've literally been skimming through this entire series since book 2 to follow Matilda's story. Literally skipped most of the book because it's just not interesting.
I'd give this 2.5 stars. I'll start by saying that if I'd read other books in this series, I probably would have rated it higher as I would have had a greater understanding of all of the little intricacies going on throughout the chapters. I've read other books by this author and liked them but I found this one quite impersonal because I spent a lot of the book not really knowing what was going on. I'm aware this is Book 10 in the series but I really think it needs a disclaimer of some sort stating that it's not really suited as a standalone as I found a lot of the character development and events leading up to the romance itself had already taken place. This left the plot of this book (and then the romance aspect as a consequence) quite isolated and the characters kind of just thrown in there with no recap or details. Each chapter starts with a letter between two of the characters. I didn't know all of the characters mentioned, nor, obviously, their relation to the main characters or the over-arching plot. I enjoyed the letters between Matilda and Montagu, the focus on the next book, probably more than Gabriel and Helena who were the happy couple in this novel.
The book starts with Madeline and Helena visiting Montagu's estate to visit his niece. Helena is already infatuated with Gabriel so clearly they'd already met at least once previously. There's also obviously a backstory with Matilda and Montagu. There's no quick recap, no revelations in the dialogue to reveal events of the past or the extent of the relationships involved. I felt like I'd come into a story halfway through and spent most of the book playing catch-up with characters I had little interest in because I had no grasp of their background, their quirks and characteristics and who they actually were. Matilda's story popped in and out throughout the book which took even more of my focus away from Gabriel and Helena. The main gist I got was that the latter was a wealthy duke's sister and therefore of high station; he was born poor and hard work had helped him amass an extraordinary wealth even though he was shunned by the ton. After seeing each other coincidentally a couple of times where he acknowledges Helena is desperate to get his attention, they race each other and he starts to see how wonderful she is.
There's reference to a debt he owed her - I still have no idea what this was about. Even the concept of the dare that these books seem to be based on wasn't detailed. I ended up skimming parts of it and don't feel as though I missed anything because I wasn't invested in the characters or plot even though it was written well enough. I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed but there were a lot of parts in this book where I thought to myself 'What the heck is happening here and/or who/what are they talking about?' I would highly recommend starting from Book 1 and going from there. I started from this book because it was on sale.
Book 10 of the Girls Who Dare series was about Lady Helena Adolphus, daughter and sister of a duke, she was vivacious, managing, and a member of the Peculiar Ladies' Book Club, and Gabriel Knight, a man who was born in poverty and raised in an orphanage. Though Gabriel managed to rise from the streets to become one of the richest men in England, he was still not welcome in society and still not happy. Book 10 actually started out with a good bit of humor, which was a pleasant surprise. Even when Helena completed her dare was hilarious. The fact that humor can be so well incorporated into a romance novel is such an ideal plan that every author should try at least once or twice. While this book had more romance than most of the other books so far in the series, it was also more boring. It droned on and on about Gabriel's having grown up on the streets and in an orphanage and it had more interference in their relationship from all sides, and that includes the author's tendencies to throw other characters' romances and trials into the mix. As much as I believe love can change a heart, the way this book portrayed Gabriel as a man who would use people to get what he wanted and then drop them faster than a hot penny didn't give credence to how fast his attitude towards the aristocracy changed. No one changes that fast. While I realize it was just a book, just a story and therefore had time constraints, I've seen many a novel factor in a longer timeline in fewer chapters than this book in order to accommodate the necessary changes in a person's attitude, character, and emotions. I think this was one of the most boring books in the series so far. It took me far too long to read as I kept wandering away from it, which is unusual for me. Normally I can't put a book down until I've read it cover to cover. This one, however, I deliberately put down as it just did not hold my attention in the least. However, I was eager to get past it, so I pressed on to the ending, which was far better than I expected. While the book was long and a bit boring, it was pretty much the same as all the others. It was a good book but did not merit the Keeper for the Shelves award.
To Ride with a Knight.........And what a ride it was!! I knew I would love Gabe & Helena's story, but I didn't even begin to know how much.
From the moment Gabriel Knight came on the scene, I knew eventually I was going to love the bastard who grew up on the streets with no parents & clawed his way doing anything he could to become the wealthy man he was today & he has quite the reputation with the ladies. He is a successful businessman, owns many properties & investments & can purchase anything he wants - but he can't buy acceptance into society. He knows he needs to marry into a well-established Ton family to get this last thing he yearns for; however, what does he do? He falls in love with a duke's daughter & knows that he can never have her & tries to keep her at arm's length until he can't.
Helena Adolphus is the eighteen-year-old sister of Robert Adolphus, the Duke of Bedwin. She is beautiful & knows she has been raised to marry well but she is smitten with Gabe & ties to get him to like her because she is vibrant, full of sunshine, opinionated & wants to marry for love. She has been scolded by her friends to stay away from Gabe & even she knows, her brother will not entertain his interest even if she could get Gabe attention.......and then she did!
The wonderful romance is so much fun - bantering between them was great, a have a race between them from London to Brighton(he should never have said she couldn't drive a phaeton as well as he could), friends that were so kind, servants that were friends & loyal to the death, her brother was ready to slay dragons to keep her safe. This was a sweet, exciting love story between two classes & I highly recommend this & the entire series!
To Ride with the Knight är del 10 i serien Girls Who Dare, och jag har läst alla föregående titlar. Det innebär också att jag skrivit rätt ofta om Emma V Leech på den här bloggen. Hon är min favoritförfattare inom romance, eftersom hennes böcker innehåller det jag vill ha i romance. Så är det även i To Ride with the Knight.
To Ride with the Knight is the tenth book in the Girls Who Dare Series. This is Helena and Gabe's book (and huge portion of Matilda and Lucien's story too). I wasn't too excited for Helena's story, so maybe that is why I couldn't connect with her and Gabe.
I found Helena just kind of boring? She's a rich girl with no issues really. She has an over protective brother and her crush is on a commoner. Kind of typical? I like the interactions between her and Gabe. I found it cheeky and the whole race was pretty exciting to read.
Other than that, this book had ZERO steam, kind of disappointing. There is a kiss here and there, but nothing really leading to a buildup. I wouldn't even call this a slow burn. I do like that Helena and Gabe were truthful throughout the entire relationship, but I found the second half of the read, kind of boring and pointless? I'm not a fan of angst, but since I wasn't a fan of the storyline already, I didn't really care for the second half of the book.
Anyhow, if you are a fan of Matilda and Lucien, you will get plenty of them, which is perfect because their book is next!
I have been looking forward to this story since I finished book 9...I truly wish I could read them all right now! I love the way the story unfolded and was pleased that Mr. Knight was not as horrid as we were lead to believe. There were incidents from his past that he wasn't proud of but he did explain them to Helena who was the person with whom he should have shared them with. She was not overly excited about some of his past, but she gave him credit and loved him with all of her heart. I was happy to see their happy ever after. I am truly excited about Matilda and Lucien's upcoming book. I've been intrigued by their story since it was introduced. Ms. Leech has such an engaging way of writing and she never leaves the characters out of the other books. They've become family or friends that you like to keep in touch with!
Helena is such a vivacious and lively woman and Gabe is the perfect complement to her. Her greatest fear is to lead a monotonous life. She yearns for a partner with whom she can share in the adventures of life and who would not expect her to only be an empty, biddable, baby-making wife of the ton. Gabriel has been looked down upon his entire life. Even though he has worked hard to become a very rich and successful man, alas, he cannot change the circumstances of his birth and as birth and pedigree is the only thing that matters in the world they are born in, Gabriel expects to be shunned and rejected by the daughter of a Duke. But, sparks fly and they both fall in love. At risk of divulging spoilers, I'll just say that after a series of tumultuous situations they ultimately find their happily ever after.
Just wow I loved the adventures in this book, it was so fast paced and enjoyable I read it in one sitting!! The two main characters are from very different worlds but their attraction to each other makes for a lovely romantic build up. I enjoyed Gabe finding out who Helena really was and she is a fabulously strong woman (as is her maid, Tilly). I've just loved this whole series so much, each character has their own individual traits, good and bad, that make them unique but they're all dealing with their own issues in one way or another. I don't want to say much more because I know a lot of Emma's fans are reading this but seriously the whole series is just fab and the 3rd July can't come soon enough for Matilda and Montagu's story.
I seem to be waiting (very impstiently) for each of this series to be released and then practically inhale the book once it arrives on my kindle! This addition was no different and even though I wasn't as invested in Helena as one of the original 'Peculiar ladies' I loved her character development and really enjoyed her sparkling with Gabriel Knight. The subplot between Matilda and Montagu makes my chest ache with all that they feel for each other and I cannot wait for the next book! This was another amazing foray into Emma V Leech's meticulous brain weaving all of these fantastic characters seamlessly together.
Lady Helena is a Duke's sister and heiress. She is expected to marry well and become a quiet trophy wife of a peer. This doesn't suit her energetic, adventurous personality at all.
She is fascinated by Mr Knight a self-made entrepreneur who was born a bastard and has a devilish reputation. He knows she is beyond his touch so he either ignores or antagonizes her every chance he gets to put her off. Red flag to a bull. She wants him more.
Good love story. Great characters. This is a linked series with multiple recurring characters and cross-over storylines.
I didn't much care for Helena and Gabe's story. In the last five books in this series it's the heroine who pursues the hero and while I appreciate a woman taking her future in her own hands and each story is different, I would like a variation in the dynamic. I also feel like is kind of an easy recourse to write a reckless heroine to the point of thoughtlessness and to make this her main trait, because it allows you to ignore the complexities that social rules give to a romance set in this era and even the nuances of a well written romance. She just says "I love him" and charges ahead. I know this is more of a quick read than a story with any real depth but anyway, just thoughts.
This book felt like a prelude to Matillda and Montagues story. We certainly were given access a lot of their thoughts and feelings. However that does not take away anything from Helena and Gabriel's romance which was certainly a whirlwind as you might expect. I was really unsure how things would come about and was pleasantly surprised. Each of the stories in this series is very different but I have a feeling the final book will be really special!
Lady Helena Adolphus and Gabriel Knight are from two very different worlds, but when they meet sparks are sure to fly! This novel is so well written, it has an engaging feisty heroine and a very attractive, and ambitious man who has quite literally raised himself from the gutter.
I thought this book was quite simply brilliant from start to finish; it is the perfect novel for whiling away a couple of hours.
TO RIDE WITH A KNIGHT : is my 9th Emma V Leech read. GABE has everything, and everything has been hard scrabble after growing up in an orphanage. HELENA, sister of the Duke wants GABE, and taunts him into racing her. The differences in their stations leads them on a wild chase to Gretna Green. This book is FUN. These two people really belong together and that is what I most enjoy in this authors books..... although sold as ‘stand alone’ this book did not gain from the letters of the Peculiar Ladies. If unfamiliar with the series, the letters would confuse.
Really, realy love it just as all the previous books in the series. Can't wait to read the next one.
But somehow I've been waiting for the story of Matilda and 'Monty' since the first book in the series. There were several teasers in every book that made it harder and harder for me to wait. I hope very much that I will be released from my 'suffering' in the next book, laugh.
You absolutely have to read this series, otherwise you will miss a huge reading fun.
This one is a bit of an after thought. I like Gabe. Helena is okay but we don't know much about her other than she's cheerful after a long awful ride across the country. The story is more involved with furthering the arcs of other characters and providing epilogues for those already settled. And the fact that the letters at the beginning of the chapters are more informative and emotional than the content of the chapter is just sad.
***not a standalone, all books must be read in order***
Again way too formulaic though I did love how Helena and Gabe fell in love and couldn't keep away from each other.
I also love how interconnected all the books are. It is annoying in that you have to read them in order to know what's going on. But if you love it, it's so unbelievably clever. All of the leadup in the previous books enriches all of the stories.
Loved this one!!! had everything I look for in a regency! Adventure and chemistry and deep heart felt love.
One steamy scene, so kept light in this one.
HEA: YES Cliffhanger: No and YES, this love story is wrapped up but the last girls love story is very much intertwined in all the books and we are finally going to read her story!! Can’t wait!!! Steam: 1/5* light, one scene after marriage
Gabe and Helena make it to the finish line..together
Helena wanted Gabe from their first encounter and although he was intrigued, he knew that with his background, he was definitely off limits to her. After all, he was a lowborn and she was so high in society, she was way out of his league. But as we know, in romance books, love finds a way. In Ride with a Knight, we are treated to a wonderful story of stolen kisses, stolen moments and a mad dash to Scotland. A must read!
The series gets better and better with each book. I love how the writer develop Gabriel’s character and how he fell hard for Helena. There’s no stupid misunderstanding, they were being honest with each other and they fought for each other. I can’t wait for Lucian and Matilda’s story.
I am a bit miffed with Ms. Leech and how she put such a roadblock for Matilda and Montagu. Phoebe is an absolute delight, look forward to the next book where all 3 are to be featured. Poor Uncle Monty has no idea what is store! Helena and Gabe were the couple in this book. Both are headstrong and a bit wild. I am sure their life will be filled with adventure!
This is another amazing example of brilliant writing
This is another amazing example of a brilliantly written story. The plot is full of intrigue and emotion. The characters are crafted beautifully, and with a strength to overcome social rules that can be very difficult. This is a great book for anybody who loves steamy historical romances that have plenty of twists and turns.
I liked this one because you spend more time with the couple in love than you do in the other books. I love the way he treats her and the way she can be herself around him. I was so into the book that I was yelling and talking out loud. I was glad they’re ending ended the way it did.
