Becoming Israel: Rethinking the Genesis Stories from the Original Hebrew

Rate this book
This book pulls back the layers of translation traditions by looking at the original Hebrew of the Book of Genesis itself. Most people think that because the majority of Bible translators are committed to God that they would never introduce anything of “their own” into the text of translation. But, truth be told, objective translation is impossible because any text is understood through the worldview of the translator. Translation is in some way an act of interpretation of the original Scriptures. By slowly reading this book you will discover for yourself the riches of the Ancient Hebrew stories that were first written to provide a guide for the emerging people of Israel. Whether you are part of today’s “Jewish people” or what many have come to call a “Jewish coalition” – the members of the nations of the world that worship Israel’s God in Christ Jesus along with the people of Israel – this book is for you, because these great Torah stories are your heritage as well. Without them you, too, just like an Israelite of old, do not know where you came from and where it is that you are going.

Another great book by Eli Lizorkin-Eyzenberg. My third. I think he accomplishes what he tried to achieve, to show from the Hebrew text (as best as can be to those of us who do not know Biblical or modern Hebrew) the Genesis story of the start of Israel as a people, pre Exodus. I appreciate Dr. Lizorkin-Eyzenberg emphasis but I must state that this is not exactly new to the type of Protestant Christian study of the Bible I was raised with. I recommend this and his other books.

Becoming Israel

Me pareció muy buen libro, me encantó el enfoque de analizar los textos hebreos para entender mejor la traducción; me ayudó a encontrar bibliografía adicional para algunos versículos en los que tenía interés.
Muy claro y didáctico.

Scholarly in its scope, but reads like a narrative. This book is one which I intend to read again. The history of the people of Israel is a rich, raw, romanticized, and reuniting tale. As the story unfolds, it is accompanied by a rudimentary grasp of the Hebrew language. Highly recommended.

Profound

This was excellent reading. I will not be able to read other Christian books in the same way. This provided such deep insight into the meeting of the key words in the Bible and this makes a huge difference to understanding scriptures.

I enjoyed reading this and it the text made me reflect on a lot of things - what's written in the Bible and our current situation.

I love how the author noted the many similarities in some of the characters in this chapter and how God works out His plans for us.

I agree that translations are difficult and sometimes there's just no word to get across so context or main thoughts work best.

Understanding the patriarchs and others

Very nice insight into what happened with patriarchs and how stories are related with Adam and Noaj
We all need to agree that the Hebrew language allows us to see and dig in scriptures letting the reader gain understanding on how Elohim has related with his people throughout ages.
