This pains me deep in my fan-girl heart to say, but Trixie and Katya's Guide to Modern Womanhood wasn't as funny or as clever as it wanted to be.

I'm a huge Drag Race fan, and I love my comedy queens, so of course I'm obsessed with Trixie and Katya. I religiously watch their YouTube show, UNHhhh (if you haven't watched it, you must), and I laugh throughout the whole thing. Trixie and Katya are hilarious just riffing off one another, and I think it's a combination of their quick wit, facial expressions, and sound effects that makes it so special. Take all of those things away and make them try to get that same dynamic on paper and it's... yeah, lacking.

I feel like the book couldn't decide if it wanted to be a parody, comedy book, or something more true to life. They are no Tina Fey or Mindy Kaling when it comes to comedy writing, that's for sure. The final result was a mildly funny, sort of strange mash-up of everything they wanted the book to be but without ever really being successful.

I bet you good money that this book is 100x better in audiobook format. I think hearing the laughter in their voices and the way they deliver the commentary would have make it so much better. I think it's a bit like The Greatest Love Story Ever Told, which is excellent in audio but not great in print.

Not a bad book but not at the level I was expecting. Maybe I'll wait for Bob the Drag Queen and Monét X Change to show everyone how it's done.

Firstly let me say right off the bat: the photos of these two idiots are worth the price of admission. I was on page "xi" and came to that conclusion. And honey (oh honey!) it just gets better from there.

Fans of UNHhhh are going to love the inclusion of classic lines such as "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage..." but will also revel in new quotable quotes like, "a good red lip will get you laid at your high school reunion and that is proof enough that makeup is God." However, readers should also brace themselves for perfectly useless pieces of advice such as, "Pro Tip: you need one [shoe] for each foot."

Thanks, Marv.

Incredibly useless but delightfully adorable as it's coming from two of our favourite drag queens.

And that should be enough for us.

This work is fabulous. An absolutely wonderful read that will have you smiling, laughing, and feeling like you're talking to a couple of old friends, "Trixie and Katya's Guide to Modern Womanhood" is a must-buy for fans and anyone who's looking for the real tea, boots-the-house-down realness about what modern womanhood REALLY looks like.

I am a cisgender male, and after reading Trixie and Katya's Guide to Modern Womanhood, I am confident that I could never rise to the task of being a modern woman. Congratulations to these biological women on their grand success.

During the first COVID-19 lockdown, I binge-watched thirteen seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race. It seemed only natural that I’d enjoy this whimsical parody of a book, but, it turns out, maybe it’s just too niche for me... or what I find hysterical in the context of a reality TV show I watch when I'm not in the mood for anything that requires me to use my brain just doesn't translate to the printed word.

Full disclosure: I am a casual fan. They were two of my favorite season seven contestants (Katya more so than Trixie—her humor is more up my alley, and I just don't like Trixie's exaggerated make-up look, although I appreciate the uniqueness), but I have neither seen their AllStars seasons, nor have I ever watched their web-series UNHhhh. I am also a biological woman who has never worn foundation and whatever goes with it; I wouldn't even know where to begin. I love looking at people do their make-up; there's something about it that relaxes me and that I find oddly satisfying, even more so when it involves sassy gay men transforming into gorgeous women before my very eyes. But for me personally, it stops at mascara and filling in my eyebrows, plus the occasional asymmetrical winged eyeliner. Maybe eye-shadow if I'm feeling fancy, or a red lip if I'm feeling slutty. It's probably safe to say that I'm not the target audience for this book.

This is a parody of those old-school etiquette guides for ladies striving for the feminine ideal. It's divided into three sections: Beauty and style (which covers hair, make-up, shoes, personal style, personal hygiene, alcohol, drugs, and self-care), homemaking (money, digital life, interior design, food, travel, and decluttering), and relationships (meeting people, hook-ups, break-ups, and friendships). Each chapter comes with related pictures, more on the camp than on the glamorous side of things, and most chapters are written by either Trixie or Katya, three have alternating input from both, and one per section is a conversation between them. These latter ones were my least favorites—they came off as lazy, low-effort additions, like literal transcripts of unscripted conversations that often went on tangents. It might be funny if you see or hear it, but reading it? Not so much.

This is not the book for you if you're actually looking for beauty tips etc.; everything in it ranges from tongue-in-cheek to satirical. It doesn't hurt to have a working knowledge of pop culture and other Drag Race alumni to appreciate much of the humor, but despite the writing being mostly competent with some flashes of wit, it was more miss than hit for me. I didn't really have expectations for this book, but it didn't tickle my funny bone as much as I would've liked; yet it still provided me with about an hour and a half of shallow entertainment.

—————

Note: I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The digital copy I received was an utter mess; despite trying multiple formats on different devices, the formatting was hopelessly broken, which made the book hard to read in parts. For instance, in one chapter, two clearly separate paragraphs were meshed together in a way that rendered it completely unreadable. If this doesn't get fixed before the release, the publisher and retailers will have many complaints on their hands. However, from the few page excerpts of it I've seen, the print edition should be beautiful—it has more of a magazine layout, which I really liked.

This was a perfectly fine, humorous take on a memoir. I especially enjoyed the transcripts of T&K's conversations together, and the gorgeous photos were well worth the price of the physical copy. That said, I wouldn't say this is one for people who are not fans already.

I will give this a go, but boil it down, it's two men telling you how to be a woman. Like we've had a thousand years of men doing that. Infact, it's still happens now. I know there are nuances there but I'm talking at a basic level. That slightly makes me uncomfortable.

I'll see if this funny feeling changes after reading it. I just wish they chose something else.

edit:

I read this. It's okay. You won't learn anything real, but I'm not sure you're supposed to learn anything so that's alright. But it makes the whole book a bit pointless as a "proper guide". Like Willam's book was actually helpful. My favourite parts was Trixie and Katya having conversations between themselves, I wish that was the whole book. I think that's where they are at their strongest when they are acting as a duo, just talking about certain topics and not censoring themselves. Allowing themselves to wonder and you're always surprised on where things go in the end. It's what their show is all about after all, so I didn't know why they just didn't continue with an obviously winning and popular formula rather than another boring "guide for life". Most episodes of their show is them at their best, talking about random subjects and having a good chin wag. The other stuff was a bit eh and sometimes, the voices seemed very samey despite them both having quite different voices/different styles of drag in real life. You can tell when some chapters drag on to reach the word count, where as it could've been summed into a paragraph instead of 3 pages. So yeah, I just wish it was a book of them having conversations because those felt more real to me, rather than the advice that you need to buy two shoes, not one. Which is silly, because I have got plenty of shoes where I only was able to wear one shoe, so I have one used shoe and one shoe that looks brand new so buying a single shoe would've been helpful. I get it's a joke of course, that assumes everyone needs two shoes and thus like lol: isn't that so obvious!!!!

this was a hilarious, satirical self-help book written by two of the most well-known rupaul’s drag race alums, trixie mattel and katya zamolodchikova. their unique brand of humour shines through in this book, and i’d say that it is one of the main highlights of it.

the book is filled with many great pictures of the two and it wasn’t very long. the chapters were nice and succinct, and i particularly loved the conversations between them. it was like i was reading a more grounded yet realistic version of their web series, which is called UNHhhh.

there were very few notable flaws in this book. i genuinely enjoyed it. there were many moments that made me laugh out loud. trixie and katya did a great job of translating their dynamic into writing.

however, i had to take half a star off, not necessarily because of the book’s quality, but because it took me so long to finish it. i lost interest in it about 40% in and put it down for several months.

i just got back around to reading it, though i was less interested and invested in it than i was the first time around. regardless, this was a great, quick read that i would definitely recommend!

3.5/5

Cute and fun and funny. These two biological women always know how to make me giggle.

Definitely recommend if you love either Trixie or Katya, watch UNHhh, or watch Drag Race. Or, like me, all 3.

I really am not sure how to write this review. My first season of drag race was seven where Trixie and Katya were introduced to the world at large. I was a #JusticeForTrixie stan and at that time I think I probably thought Katya was robbed on the top 5 lipsync (my feelings have definitely since changed but I think a Katya, Kennedy, and Violet top three would’ve been much more interesting but I digress).

Since season 7 my love for Trixie turned into like, and now I can appreciate her but she just doesn’t do much for me these days. Katya fares a little better but even then it isn’t by much. I watch Uhnnnn or however it’s spelled but it rarely makes me laugh anymore because the humor is just kinda esoteric or the same five jokes that have been ran into the ground for 4 years at this point (which is a critique I have of this book. The “welcome to the stage..” joke hasn’t been funny in years).

I’m always going to happy for queer peoples’ success (except Jefferee Star since he’s a huge bigot) and I will always support drag entertainers but if I’m being honest I just did not get any enjoyment out of this book. I’m happy for those that did/do, but this just doesn’t really resonate with me. I don’t think the humor translates well at all on the page because it’s virtually impossible to read tone and inflection in written form and the timing is just hard to nail because we all read differently. Idk if that makes any sense.

In closing, the 13 year old twitter tweens who love Trixie and Katya and ship them together and want them to fuck them with a rake while they call them mom (or whatever is in vogue nowadays, that was more circa 2014/5 stan behavior now I think it’s all about apologizing for some bullshit someone took offense to, idk) will get their lives with this book. But I’m not one of those people, so it’s just gonna be a no from me dawg.

I just really fucking love Trixie and Katya. This book is absolute pure hilarious nonsense, exactly as I was expecting it to be. If it’s anything to do with this duo then you know it’s going to be ridiculous and you’re going to love it. There really isn’t much substance to this book other than laughs, definitely don’t go into looking for illuminating life advice. And if you take advice from these two then don’t be surprised at the disappointing results.

I received a digital review copy of this book from Edelweiss+.

Trixie Mattel and Katya, of RuPaul’s Drag Race fame, teach readers how to strive for the feminine ideal.

I expected this to be a riot, but I didn’t expect it to also be so interesting and incisive. The writing is solidly competent and witty. The pictures are a spot on blend of glamour and camp, and the essays are engaging not just because they’re hilarious, but because the content is genuinely well thought out.

The chapter on makeup is an excellent example of this. Trixie writes about her experiences behind a makeup counter and reflects compassionately about the insecurities of the women she helped. Her thoughts on how we use makeup are fun to read, but also useful. The whole book is like this.

I will note, though, that the digital review copy was a mess. I tried it in multiple formats and on several devices, but the formatting was broken regardless of what I did. I’m sure it’ll get cleaned up before the wide release, but as it stands the digital version gets 1/5 stars from me. The book itself is a 5/5 star read.

I can't say that I didn't enjoy this crazy, kind of self-help / advice from your nutty aunt book. I adore Trixie and Katya, their web series is one of the highlights of fun on youtube. Also who better to give you advice, on all things woman if not these two beautiful ladies.

This was supposed to be a parody of an advice book for how to be a proper lady, with flawless make-up, etiquette and fashion. But this book somehow didn't meet all of my expectations. Don't get me wrong, there were amazing moments, especially those where both Katya and Trixie told their experiences as a dialogue on a particular subject. And then there were chapters, where it got a bit pseudo-serious all of a sudden, and it changed the tone to more of an actual advice column, and it left me a bit confused.

Overall this short read was great and funny, sometimes confusing, but nevertheless entertaining. The audio was even more fun, as it was read by those crazy ladies. So if anyone would like to pick this one up, I highly recommend the audio version.

I read this because of the 4 star rating and I thought it was going to be funny like Ali Wong or Tina Fey's books but it wasn't. This book is like walking into a club and you have those bratty boisterous women who DNGAF but more so in a self centered rude kind of way. It's about the benefits of doing your make up, dressing nice, trying out drugs, and YOLO'ing lol... this is definitely not a personal development book. It's definitely more like a podcast of talking about personal anecdotes.

Let the record show that I DO NOT give a flying fuck about RuPaul's Drag Race, but these two... these two I would die for. The internet forced them down my throat and I'm finally ready to embrace them sexually.
The whole book is insane in the best way possible, but the void in my soul has never been filled as much as it was after the conversation chapters; they were so unhinged and quotable, I'm gonna have to read it again. The peeing girl in the plane story fixed me.

everthing you've done, we have done well and done it with fuller lashes.

save your unpopular political views for that midnight cross burning on your lawn.

i might not be tall or fashionable, but i am prediabetic.

i think i look like caillou with fetal alcohol syndrome.

mis partes favoritas definitivamente son las conversaciones entre ellas. es como un capítulo transcrito de "Unhhhh", and i loved that.

Right off the bat I laughed because of the tongue in cheek dedication: "For all the ambitious female scientists out there." I was listening to it this morning on my way to work in my biology lab! Thanks Trixie and Katya.

This was a very cute, fun, easy book!

I am a big fan of Trixie and Katya, but I think their true humor lies in their wacky, off-the-cuff, unscripted banter (The masterpiece that is UNHhhh). This book was a little flat but still enjoyable! It had some good advice sprinkled in there, like don't tell other people what to like about you! Let them discover what they like about you. I had to pause for a second and process that .

I especially enjoyed the little references to Drag Race/UNHhhh/just general inside jokes sprinkled in here and. ("Please welcome to the stage..." clocking Ginger Minj for using the word "best friend," or Trixie calling Katya her "vascular friend." Girl, we know all about that burrowing-family-of-worms-looking varicose vein...)

I was really looking forward to this release, and it didn’t disappoint! It is definitely a great read for fans of the UNHhhhh series, Drag Race, and of Katya and Trixie’s dry sense of humour and wit. I feel as though I would have given it a full 5 stars if I had listened to them both reading it as an audiobook, as I could listen to them talk to each other all day - so I will consider doing just that in the near future. I would recommend this to drag fans as a fun, satirical “guide to life”. You will appreciate the pop culture references and the insight into their minds.

This book is very fun and was a bit like watching UNHhhh, which is both a negative and a positive given that this is a book and not a video. A lot of what's in the book they've already talked about in the show, but they are still interesting stories you won't feel annoyed with the retelling. I really liked Trixie's portions (though Katya is my favorite on the show) and thought her section on interior design and additions on fashion/style were great.

Anyone who’s had the misfortune of talking to me in the last couple of weeks knows about my intense attraction to these two women. I had fun reading this because I love Trixie and Katya. But these two shine when they get to riff off of each other in person and when we get to hear Katya’s spastic laughter or Trixie’s filthy jokes.

If you're like me, you have a beard and write increasingly nonsensical reviews on Goodreads. You're also already a fan of Trixie and Katya from their appearances on Ru Paul's Drag Race, UNHhhh, live stage shows, and various bits of plastic merchandising sitting around your salubrious confines. So, you know what you're getting into here: a quality hardcover filled with glossy photographs that have well and truly moved beyond that Season 1 lighting. It's a fun piece, with some surprisingly good essays on body image, body pampering, food and sex. Where the book shines is in the transcripts of conversations between the dynamic drag duo, and it's that conversational style that has made them such fan favourites over the last few years. Like many celeb book debuts, it's lighter on written content than lots of lists and photos, but they manage to find the right balance here methinks.

If there was ever a time to prioritize self care, it is now. This is a necessary pandemic purchase, Carol. Trixie and Katya's famous banter transfers incredibly well to the written word. Celebrated authors, indeed. With each page-turn I felt like I was sitting in the room with my two best gals who love to build me up by reminding me of my worth and never shying away from telling me that my eyeliner looks like garbage. If the chapters of wisdom aren't enough for you, buy this book for the full-page spreads of the two most beautiful women in television history.

I genuinely could not love these biological women more. This lighthearted read was exactly what I needed during the stressful time that is the end of the year. Listening to their voices while following along is the ultimate experience for sure. I found the book to be so funny, I was chuckling along, and the pictures are mesmerizing, they’re so beautiful.
