Secrets of the Happy Soul: Experience the Deep Delight You Were Made For

Rate this book
How do some people do it? They rise above the circumstances and distractions of life and remain consistently happy. Even in tough times they have a quiet sense of peace about them. Examining the Bible and her own life, Katie Orr has discovered that deep happiness and satisfaction are only possible when we are rooted in God and pursuing his good and specific purpose for each of us.

Secrets of the Happy Soul
is your invitation into a deeper, more fruitful relationship with God and his Word. As Katie walks you through key teachings from the book of Psalms, you will recognize how the world's definition of happiness pales compared to the daily delights God has in store for you. Draw closer to him, and your soul will go from lonely to connected, from overwhelmed to level and led, from aimless to commissioned and unique. God doesn't promise a storm-free life, but he is the anchor every happy soul needs.

What do you say about a book that literally grabs you in the intro and holds on to your heart so much that you don't stop reading until it's finished? That is so full of highlights that you have to go back and start reading again to REALLY soak those in? You call it a fresh breath of air because it awakens and further illuminates the need of our soul to KNOW God through His Word. Not as a "good Christian" checklist, but to nourish the very relationship that makes our souls truly happy. Packed full of scripture, practical, holds your attention, but most importantly it sends you straight to the source of what our souls are designed for.

Reading Secrets of the Happy Soul is like having a conversation with the author, Katie Orr. It is packed full of scriptural truths and Katie reveals her heart as she shares personal struggles. Through Scripture, she unwraps how our souls can be happy when we are not self-centered but Christ-centered.
This book is a gem! No matter what season of life you are experiencing, it will speak to God’s faithfulness.
Secrets of the Happy Soul is an encouraging and refreshing read you will certainly share with others.

My family has a no secrets policy. We want out children to be completely honest with us and not keep anything from us. I also have always felt that happiness is less important than what God wants for us. This book has done an amazing job of taking my preconceived ideas and allowing me to look past wording and look to the heart of an issue.
One definition of Secret is "something that is not properly understood; a mystery". That is what Katie writes about in the pages of this book. She is also quick to explain that our happiness is very important to God. While we often split hairs over joy compared to happiness, this book puts them together. And these secrets, these often misunderstood treasures hidden in the bible, can help our souls become happy.

With strong scripture foundation, and vivid personal narratives, Katie explains how a happy soul is:
-Focused on God
-Resolved to Follow God's Way
-Attached to God's Word
- Dependent on God's Provision
- Confident in Who She is
-Surrendered to Her King

Especially now, while many of us are stuck in our homes with our families, what an ideal time to learn about how our souls can be happy while our circumstances seem bleak.
I highly recommend this biblically truthful entertaining, and highly encouraging book. It's one that will truly fill our soul and teach the truth about the happiness of it.

Every once in awhile a book comes along to me at just the right time. “Secrets of a Happy Soul”. is on of those books and this has been definitely the right time.

It has been so rewarding to lean into the pages between the cover of this book. I have learned how to tap into the “happy” that is part of my DNA as a seeker and believer in Jesus. I appreciate Katie Orr’s authentic, vulnerable story telling that illustrates simple yet deep truth from the Bible. But most of all I appreciate that this book is drenched with passages from the Bible . I came away from reading this book encouraged, not to become a frantic fan of Katie Orr but to drink deeply and depend whole on the truths that are written in God’s word.

Life is filled with uncertainty. Life is filled with difficulties and hard times. Life is filled with wonderful moments where you just know thatGod has designed for you. Reading this book and walking through the scripture in it (Check out Her study called “Everyday Happiness” has been one of those times.
If you are curious what the Secrets are of the Happy Soul, get this book and have a read. you won’t regret it.

The cover and theme of this book first caught my eye. I want to be "happy" and how can I achieve it ?
Katie Orr's book makes you shift from being self-centered to Christ centered. Her simple style of explaining Scripture and its application makes you want to underline every principal on each page. There is humor, sadness, and joy that Katie shares in her desires for a Happy Soul that we all can relate. Regardless of your spiritual walk, this book will take you deeper. I highly recommend this book as a "must read" for 2020.

Secrets of the Happy Soul is both winsome and practical. The author defines and guides the reader with practical tips on how to have a happy soul. The secret of the happy soul is rooted in relationship with God and gives foundational truths on how to nurture and grow your relationship. "The Happy Soul life is not reserved for the super-spiritual. There are no classes of Christianity. All of God's promises are for all of God's people."
Secrets of the Happy Soul is needed in today's culture of doing and being, caught in a web of busyness while smothering happiness. Highly recommend!

An exceptional good book on how to be deeply and intimately happy not based on circumstances, friendships, or even your spouse. This author has done an excellent job on where genuine happiness comes from and how to live out that happiness. A must read for everyone!

I am about half way done with the book. What I appreciate most about the author is that she always grounds everything in Scripture. She defines her terms in the beginning which was helpful as the current English definition of "happy" is not the same as the Hebrew "'esher". As Christians "Happy Soul" is part of our identity. The book is easy to read, personal, real, challenging and encouraging. Sound theology with practical application. Read. Read. Read.

Love this book. I feel like I’m having a conversation about “The Happy Soul” with Katie while reading her book. Secrets of the Happy Soul reflects on the author’s personal Christian walk while referencing Bible scripture to encourage and lift us up to strive for Happiness through Jesus Christ. There are so many ahha moments in this book - the author gives such great insight on happiness and then references scripture to tie it all together. Definitely recommend!

Do you want to make your soul truly happy?
Well-known speaker and author Katie Orr presents her book "Secrets Of The Happy Soul. Experience the Deep Delight You Were Made For", published by Bethany House Publishers. Part 1 of the book is about the Happy Soul, part 2 defines the Happy Soul in six portions, e.g., "The Happy Soul is Focused on God", "The Happy Soul is Attached to God's Word", or "The Happy Soul is Confident in Who She is". Those portions contain two chapters each and a segment called "Soul Searching". This is the part were the reader is challenged to get practical with "Soul Evaluation" (questions to be rated from 1 to 10), "Happy Soul Actions" (questions for journaling) and a "Happy Soul Prayer". Indeed, Orr's goal is to challenge her readers (this book is useful nor only for women, but also for men and teens) to deepen their walk with God. Here is a quote from the last chapter which refers to Psalm 116:4-7. It really touched me: "The Happy Soul is so convinced in the strength and faithfulness of her King that she readily takes refuge—seeks safety—under His protection. Once we have the goodness and grandeur of God settled in our minds, resting in Him comes much more naturally. It doesn’t come perfectly, but it can become our preference. If we want the bene8ts of being in the shelter of God’s wing, we have to let go of our plans and our “power” in order to rest. Being able to sit and rest under the shelter of God’s safe plan and mighty hand recognizes that He is in control. He is able to see the big picture. He knows what has been and what will be. He loves me more than I can imagine. He has good plans for me."
I appreciate very much that Orr took her definition of "Happy" not from the every-day language, but from the Hebrew. She is very honest, presenting examples from her own life and makes it clear that a "Happy Soul" can only be found in a relationship with God. She bases the book on the Scripture, does not only list the Bible references, but quotes them in their totality. It is a book which I highly recommend and which would make also a great present.
The complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley free of charge. I was under no obligation to offer a positive review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

If you are looking for your usual, run of the mill self help book, this is NOT it. This book is totally engaging, drawing you in with Katie's conversational writing that is not only easy to understand, but also entertaining. The secrets that she shares are essential for loving yourself, others, and God. With careful curative drawing from the Bible, Katie sheds light on specific portions of God's Word in a way that makes you not only sit back and think, but also helps you put those words into practice in your everyday life. Too many times do we get caught up with the hustle and bustle of society's ideals, leading us down the path where we just lose the ability to be happy. Katie's tips and words will bring you closer to the happiness of God that so many have abandoned. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has lost that happiness and is tired of floundering through life alone.

"Focusing on God is not a one-time action; it is a lifelong pursuit. And as we seek to know God better, He will become bigger and grander and more dear to us than ever before. Therefore, the Happy Soul is a consistent learner of God, and her view of God is growing into a more accurate portrait of who God is." - Katie Orr, "Secrets of the Happy Soul"

Secrets of the Happy Soul is confirmation I needed to compliment my spiritual journey. As I’ve grown closer to God, I’ve been able to surrender to what He has for me. I consider this book part of my journey as I seek to find lasting wisdom. God continues to lead me to valuable resources. Katie’s teachings have made it easy and clear to understand His word and His work in us. When I said yes to God, my life began. My relationship with Him has proven to be the guiding light into every secret described by Katie Orr in this gem of a book. Each and every chapter gets better. I am going to treasure and share these secrets. I even purchased several copies for people in my prayer group. God’s will be done in spreading His truth. Thank you Katie for the amazing work you’ve been able to articulate for God-seekers like me.

As someone who struggles with not being a naturally happy or peppy person I was very interested to see what new insights this book would share to help make me a happier person, if it was even possible. I also had read several books that talk about God wanting to make us Holy, not happy, which Katie addresses. But I am interested in being both, and apparently, He is too.

Right away, Katie drew me in with her own story of being a not-naturally happy person. Her writing is super relatable! Right away I also learned that there would be no earth-shattering secrets to magically turn me into a happy, peppy person. But, that instead, I was already “Happy” in Christ, I just need to grow into it. Oh yeah, and happy doesn’t mean bubbly all the time.

The Secrets all point to knowing God more, following him, and allowing Him to transform us into the Happy Souls he’s called us to be. There are many practical steps to take in the process, which is also extremely helpful. There were so many great take-aways from this book, that I look forward to going through it again slower to savor the wisdom and begin putting some of the steps into practice more regularly.

Secrets of the Happy Soul by Katie Orr is a great read for all Christians. I loved the message of follow and believe in God. Trust in Jesus and your path to a happy soul will be attainable. The writer also, shared some of her difficulties of being happy. That personal side to this book just added to the beautiful message presented inside to readers. Katie Orr uses scripture to back up her words. This also highlights her messages of loving God, trusting him with all of your fears, pains, and joy.

I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.

One thing I loved about this book was the rawness. The truth in it. The references available to backup every truth. Pure honest love at its finest. This book left me hungry for the Word, knowing there's never a right/wrong time to start. Confident God wants me no matter what season of life I'm in. Not to be selfish and read just for my needs. To learn who He is and what He stands for, So I can stand confident in what I stand for as I become more like Him.

Secrets of a happy soul is such a breath of fresh spiritual air. I love how open the author is about her experiences with Christ early in her own faith walk. That was ME! It’s a mistake I think we all make. Through sound biblical teaching and scripture , she beautifully unfolds the secrets of how our souls can truly be happy. It isn’t about our sin, or a list of things we should avoid. it is about our hearts....seeking God first because our sin separates us from Him. If you want true peace and happiness for your soul, this is a Must read!

I love Katie's honesty in her own personal struggles. I also love her simple way of explaining and bringing the truths to light. I've been a Christian a long time and can truly understand her struggle to check of the do's and don'ts of Christianity but that doesn't bring the soul satisfying feeling one thinks it should and Katie Orr explains why in a simple easy to understand way.

We want to be happy don't we? Really happy with that joy springing up from the inside. After all, Jesus promised an abundant life, a thriving existence. Yet there seems to be a chasm between what Jesus promised and how many Christians live. What's going on?

Orr makes sure readers are born again believers. That is essential because her book “is about working out the incredible, life-changing, happy realities that are true of us because of Christ.” (13) She gives insights on six areas where we need to understand the life change that has happened to us and then live it out.

She points out that experiencing and enjoying God does not automatically happen. It takes cultivating. She helps us understand the kinds of actions necessary to bring us to full maturity in Christ.

My favorite part of the book is her teaching on the essential nature of valuing God's Word. We must understand that only the Word can fulfill our deepest longing and satisfy us like nothing else can. We might have some barriers that hinder us from enjoying God's Word. She tackles them, one by one, calling us to fight for the inclinations of our hearts.

This is a good book for young Christians as it clarifies the path to being all we can be in Christ. It's a good book for older Christians too, especially if we have become a little lazy in our Christian walk. Orr's enthusiasm for going after the delight we can experience in God is contagious.

Food for thought: “Happiness is not something we pursue. It's something we are.” (40)

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Katie Orr is a new author to me, so I had no real expectations of this book, but reading the description I was intrigued and wanted to read it. I've found a new author to follow!! I loved her book and rated it five stars which I rarely do.
Here's why:
*The book is biblical and theologically sound
*Her book is centered on helping her readers recognize how the Word impacts our lives.
*The book is full of verses that are key to being a happy soul.
*The book is easy to read, with authentic examples from the author's experiences.
* Once I started I didn't want to stop reading, which is unusual for a christian growth book.
*The secrets of a happy soul theme is threaded throughout the whole book helping me retain the strategies suggested.
*At the end of the chapters where she has explained how a "Happy Soul" person lives, she has a short personal rating scale for you to reflect on this area of your life and then she has some prompts to help you plan to grow. (and it's not hokey or stressful- her style is so connected, you aren't intimated to answer, you are prepared.
* Experiencing deep delight- sounds like an unachievable goal, but this book shows the reader the skills, mindset, and perspective (including what we often might think and tell ourselves that needs correction).
*God has been encouraging me to seek who He is more, and look to Him in all the minutes of my day/life. This book shows me how.
*As an avid reader of christian growth books, I often feel like a new book adds little to my already well researched mindset, but the author's perspective is unique.
* I learned NEW ideas that I am applying already and will check back in on my highlights and review to keep growing. This book blessed me and has stirred my heart, mind and soul to continue to seek a deeper connection with the Lord my God.

Honored to partner with Bethany House publishing and receive a copy of this book.
