Kurtz and Barent Mysteries #6

If a Tree Falls: A Kurtz and Barent Mystery

Rate this book
Do you love books that are filled with suspense, twisted schemes and great characters caught up in a tempest of crime, corruption and lies?

Do you love a hero who pulls no punches and never gives up?

Richard Kurtz was looking forward to spending a few weeks in the West Virginia mountains, covering for another surgeon. It should have been a pleasant break from his busy New York practice, giving Kurtz and his wife, Lenore, a good excuse to return home to the family farm and reconnect with his father and his father’s new family.

And then Lenore stumbles on the skull of a young girl at the bottom of a creek and fifteen dead bodies are discovered in a shallow grave.

Kurtz never intended to become a crime fighter. Kurtz is a surgeon. Surgeons heal people.

But fate has a way of interfering and Richard Kurtz has a knack for stumbling into trouble. Kurtz is a part time police surgeon, with close connections to law enforcement and the NYPD.

So, it’s only natural that Kurtz cannot resist trying to untangle a conspiracy that involves organized crime, political corruption and a serial killer hiding out in the woods, who is determined to continue killing, no matter the cost.

I was not disappointed in the book description because I love a hero who doesn’t pull punches, and a book with suspense with twists, turns and a criminal conspiracy. When Kurtz, a surgeon, returns to his country hometown to fill in for a few weeks at a small hospital and visit his dad, the intrigue starts while fishing with his city girl, wife. She finds a skull. That leads forensics to a mass grave.

The skillful eye of the surgeon watches, listens and hears tidbits that to most would go unnoticed. Dr. Kurtz not only skillfully connects the pieces and solves the horrific crimes along with connecting a more sinister villain, while he has to deal with the egos and feelings of those he is suspected of replacing.

The complex plot, character interactions and evil exposed in this book made it hard to put down until I was finished!

An Engaging Medical Thriller
“If A Tree Falls” by Robert Katz offers a chilling, medical thriller with unexpected twists and turns. Richard Kurtz, a surgeon, returns from New York City to the place he was raised, Clinton, West Virginia, for a six-week temporary job. He fills in for the partner of Jerry Mandell. Mandell, who treats him as an intern or a technical assistant, not as his equal. Kurtz begins to doubt Mandell’s competency and resigns himself to a long six weeks. Soon, he discovers strange things are happening in Clark county. Kurtz’s wife steps on a teenage girl’s skull while they’re fly fishing. More victims surface, upending the town’s sense of security.

Due to Kurtz’s experience as a part-time police surgeon and his connections, the police seek out his help in the murder investigations. Complicating their efforts to find the killer or killers, a proposed legislative bill would allow casinos to be built in resorts. A real estate development company is buying up property in Clark County. A state legislator ends up dead. In addition, unbeknownst to the small community, a sociopath lives in their midst. Is there a connection between the bill on the table and some of the deaths?

This is a captivating medical thriller with political intrigue that grabs hold of the reader from the very first chapter to the end. The author has done an exceptional job in developing likeable characters and nefarious villains. “If a Tree Falls: A Kurtz and Barent Mystery” is the 6th book in the series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. This is the first novel I’ve in this series, but it definitely won’t be my last. Highly recommended to all mystery and thriller readers!

‘If a Tree Falls’, the sixth novel in Robert I. Katz’s Kurtz and Barent Mystery series is a solid medical thriller with serial killer overtones. His protagonist, surgeon Richard Kurtz, has accepted a six-week assignment to cover for an unexpected vacancy in a hospital in Cook County. As this is near his father’s ranch, he sees it as an opportunity to reconnect with his parent and get to know his father’s new wife. The assignment pays well and it’s only six weeks, he keeps telling himself. His first issue is with the other surgeon he has to work with. The guy is obviously not up to par and Kurtz finds himself in a delicate situation. Add to this the gruesome discovery of a series of bodies in a nearby woodland indicate there is a serial killer operating in the area. Kurtz finds himself helping the local Sheriff, the State Police and the FBI, as well as collaborating with his old friend Barent in New York P.D. To top off the complex situation the protagonist is thrust into, an aggressive conglomerate is buying up land to develop a vacation resort and both the hospital and his father’s farm are in their sights.

This is a very entertaining read from author Katz, with myriad, though interconnected, events pulling his protagonist in different directions. The author cleverly uses this to convey Kurtz’s increasing level of stress and anxiety to the reader, drawing them into the novel.

Another great crime fiction read from this solid author and recommended to lovers of Robin Cook’s medical thrillers.

If A Tree Falls by Robert I. Katz is a medical mystery-thriller featuring general surgeon and amateur sleuth, Richard Kurtz, who takes a leave of absence from his busy big-city practice to spend time in his old home town in rural West Virginia. But this is not a vacation for the good doctor. No, he will be working at the local hospital, filling in for a surgeon who unexpectedly passed away. Richard and his artist wife, Lenore, will stay at the family farm, visiting with Richard’s father and his step-mother. However, not long after they arrive, things begin to get complicated. The skull of a young woman surfaces in a nearby trout stream, exposing the existence of a possible serial killer living somewhere close by. This sets Richard’s antenna for crime on high alert and he can’t help but join in the investigation. Toss in a little political intrigue and the result is an addictive read that’s hard to put down.

This is a fun mystery novel with numerous threads weaving their way throughout the work, giving the reader an intense and intriguing puzzle to try to solve. While this book represents the sixth novel in the series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone.

If A Tree Falls is highly recommended for fans of mystery and crime novels that have a medical twist. Five Stars.

If A Tree Falls: A Kurtz and Barent Mystery, book 6 by Robert I. Katz.

This is my second encounter with a novel by Robert I. Katz. My previous read involved book 7 of his Kurtz and Barent series and this is the preceding offering. You can read his novels out of order and they still make sense. So, thank you, and hats off to Mr. Katz.

If A Tree Falls starts out with our hero Richard Kurtz, MD and his wife Lenore visiting his father for six weeks. Kurtz is also filling in at a local hospital until a new physician can move to the West Virginia location. Kurtz is looking forward to a nice six weeks reprieve from his high-pressure New York City practice.

During a fishing outing in one of the local West Virginia streams, Lenore stumbles upon a human skull. What happens after this incident will keep you glued to the pages as Dr. Kurtz once again gets involved with the investigation. He ultimately uncovers a serial killer and other evils plaguing the peaceful West Virginia community.

The writing is tight, the premise believable, and the story will keep you guessing until the very end. Bravo, Mr. Katz, this is a highly satisfying read. One that Robin Cook fans will find enjoyable. Five Stars and Highly Recommended.

***** Politics, medicine, and murder––oh, my!

Right away, we meet a supposedly ‘normal’ man at his yearly Santa Clause-at-the-mall gig who has a dark secret: He’s a pedopile. A bad one. Someone who kills his young female victims. Driven by his compulsions and also in cahoots with less than ethical business types, this book hooked me in fast.

Then there’s Dr. Kurz, originally from this small town and now sent to relieve an older, very respected surgeon who is definitely showing his age. Accompanied by his wife, Kurtz not only is saddened by the task he is supposed to do, he also becomes involved in a couple cases of the latest murdered young teenage girls––with all the horror that goes with it.. Knowing the main cop at the police station from high school, Kurtz is let in as he offers them different perspectives when it comes to motive and medical observations.

Beside the chilling race to discover and arrest the more than clever killer, I also was interested in the dirty little secrets about hospitals and their paperwork, the step-by-step police and medical procedurals, and a close professiorial look at the history of famous serial killers and what they had or didn’t have in common. I definitely recommend this book!

did not like it

Discombobulated storyline.

I am still confused. This book was so sidetracked and written so crazy that I’m not sure why I finished it. It jumped from one setting to another in a matter of paragraphs. And it never explained how what happened in W.V. was related to events in N.Y. in every occasion. I almost surmised that more than one person were writing this book, or it was two books separated by birth joined together. Too many characters thrown together and not knowing their backgrounds. It just didn’t make sense. If it had stuck with one theory it would have worked but it was too discombobulated for me. Not worth wasting your time.

This book is part of a collection of 17 medical thrillers in the book, Do No Harm.

If a Tree Falls is a gripping mystery that delves into the mind of a serial killer. Seamus Sullivan enjoys killing and will continue on his killing spree until someone stops him.

When Richard Kurtz returns home to help out a fellow doctor who is having some difficulties he runs into more than he planned on this work/vacation. After his wife, Lenore, stumbles onto a skull in the woods things become convoluted and time consuming. He must use his impressive people observatory skills to help find the killer and stop the madness that has consumed his home town.

This thriller combines a serial killer, the mob, and the loss of a doctor’s ability to continue to practice medicine which makes for an enjoyable read. Some of the descriptive murder scenes were gruesome but added to this story that built up the suspense. You will not be able to put this one down!

I loved this mystery. Richard Kurtz is a surgeon and amateur sleuth who returns home to a small town hospital in West Virginia to fill in for another surgeon who has died. Richard and his artist wife, Lenore, will stay at the family farm, reconnecting with Richard’s father and his step-mother. Then things get complicated when Lenore stumbles on the skull of a young woman in a nearby stream. Up go Richard’s antennae for crime, and he joins the investigation.

If A Tree Falls is a terrific mystery. Although sixth in this exciting series, it can be read as a standalone. What’s special here is entering the surgeon’s mind of Richard Kurtz to see his keen observations of other characters. We also get a glimpse into the mind of a very scary criminal. This is a clever and gripping thriller, highly recommended for fans of crime novels that have a medical twist. Well done – five stars!

Often hard to follow...

The murderer was unsavory and I found it uncomfortable having to hear his thought processes. Tracking him down was the interesting part but I found the sheer number of characters--and especially the way they jerked in and out of focus because there was no warning the next paragraph had nothing to do with what you were just engrossed in. You simply got jerked from one scene to another, different people, different subject matter, and not even an extra space between paragraphs as a heads up. By the time the ending came, it was so abrupt that I wasn't sure what had happened. Surely didn't expect a throwaway background character to figure so heavily.

Pretty good

Dr Kurtz and his wife are staying with his father in West Virginia while he fills in for a new surgeon who has been delayed getting to her new practice . This story is more laid back, slower paced. Lenore finds a skull while they are fly fishing . This leads to a discovery of 15 bodies in the woods. Kurtz stays out of the way, but adds to the case. Kurtz 's father is being considered for the State Assembly . Slow moving , good detective work, coordination between local, FBI , and Barent in New York .
Well written , no typos , just not exciting .

I liked this book because of the writing. It was so real! You meet a lot of people in this story; therefore, you get a perspective into many different lives and attitudes, some good, some bad! There's always trouble in every facet of life. Here we have a serial killer, a political candidate, cops.
One quote that's noteworthy: "A cop should not take things personally but the job got to a lot of them . Too much sadness, too much tragedy, too many useless, pointless crimes that make no sense. Too many monsters." 31/2 stars***1/2

Crime in rural West Virginia

An interesting story about a company trying to buy land for a resort. A doctor taking a 6 week long job to spend time with his Dad. An assassin who also preys on children. That should be enough to hold your interest. The doctor also liked to help police solve crimes. This is my.first time reading a book from this series. The only thing I didn't like was the profanity.

Big trouble in little town.

An opportunity for Kurtz to return home to visit his dad and step mother together with 6 week stint at local hospital as part time surgeon, leads him into trouble. Chaos in hospital and disturbing investigation into local pressure to buy up land leads to murder. Awesome characters. Complex story line. Go get the book!

Pretty good

This was a decent enough book. I just did not like the way was written. In the sense that the paragraphs were a bit muddled and abruptly moved to another character. And names of so many people involved was hard to keep up.
Otherwise was pretty interesting.

I don't want it to be over!

Anyone who likes a good mystery will love the Barent\Kurtz series. Never a dull moment, whether in the midst of the mystery or learning more about the characters. I am really hoping there is another book in the works for this series.

Interesting case, with lots of twists!

Various strings to the tale. Relevant Medical information and believable twists. A wide variety of both medical and police procedures to keep the plot rolling- ended too soon!

Good, solid story

Well plotted with reasonably solid characters and only a minor glitch or two - like moving all the Queen's locations to Brooklyn

As usual I enjoyed RIK’s tale of mystery and murder. I am not a typical mystery reader, but really liked the way the characters interacted to solve the murders.

This is the first book in this series that I have read and I am so thankful that it was basically a 'stand alone' so it really didn't matter that I hadn't read the previous ones. That will be rectified though as I found this to be a very enjoyable read.
Richard Kurtz is a surgeon who seems to have an inbuilt magnet for trouble as he seems to stumble into it everywhere he goes.
Being a part time police surgeon, he has close connections to law enforcement agencies. Couple that with a healthy dose of curiosity and instinct and a crime fighting surgeon is born.
Happy reading. Annemarie
