My name is Tamsin Vale, and I survived my first semester at Artemis University… And several Biblical plagues. Of all the things I’d been expecting, plagues weren’t one of them. We still don’t know who the culprit was or if it was simply a prank, so there’s possibly another threat out there against me.
Add it to the list.
Unfortunately, that damn list is getting long.
But despite all of that, I think I’m getting the hang of this college thing. I like my classes, I’m doing well in them, and I’m making progress on also finishing high school. I have some normal in my completely crazy life with friends, a boyfriend, and typical worries someone my age should have.
Granted, I’m still sleeping with my professor and a dragon prince, while trying to save all fairies, fair folk, and Faerie, but also help my friends and women in an extremely sexist society that treats them like property and fight the corruption of the councils. That should be enough to keep a woman busy for the rest of her life.
It should have been… Except there’s a serious problem the dragons are facing, and they need my help. The lives of millions are at stake, so as much as I want to only focus on my people and my problems, they might have to wait a little bit longer. This will definitely end with more threats against me.
Artemis University is an ongoing hot burning reverse harem, university-age paranormal academy series with darker elements, strong language, violence, and a heroine who follows her own moral compass of what is right… And who she ends up giving her heart to.
Erin is a born Chicagoan who decided to state hop a bit, given she works from home. She currently resides in Georgia with her pup, Lord Vader Flynn. With an eclectic and addictive personality, there isn’t much that doesn’t interest her or she won’t pour herself into if it catches her fancy. She has always been interested in the darker aspects of life and mythologies—especially vampires, shifters, the occult, and anything paranormal.
To date, she has published more paranormal books than she can keep up with the characters for, in different genres with dedicated readers who await each release to her numerous series under any of the three Flynn names she writes.
I went back and forth in what to rate this book. There are a lot of things that I didn’t like which were making me lean towards 3 ⭐️, but at the end of the day I did read all 4 books in 2 days and will be reading the next one as soon as it is out so was leaning to wards 4 ⭐️. But after reading more than half of the series thus far I think the 3 ⭐️ is a more accurate rating.
The good: It is an intriguing and fairly fresh idea. I like the world the author built. The lore and world building is actually one of the main reasons I keep coming back. I want to know what happened to Farie. I want the corruption of this world to be righted. I am intrigued about all the races and their societies. All in all that aspect is very well done.
I like a lot of the characters. The heroine is strong, feisty, a fighter, someone that has gone through a lot yet manages to be just and not be too dark. The harem is interesting enough, even if they need more depth. I like that from time to time one of them steps on it and issues ensue since that is an actual thing that does occur in relationships. I like that the female has a lot of the power in all of her relationships (even if it sometimes backfires in the building of the relationships). I like a lot of the side characters that are strong and supportive and overall like-able.
The bad: Ok so these are the things I was not a fan of and feel some of them would have been vastly improved if the author had a good editor.
Yes there are some grammar issues, but I usually don’t care about that unless they are extreme which I didn’t feel was the case here. What did bother me was the story flow. Sometimes I had to go back and reread whole sections because I didn’t understand what the author was trying to say. Other times I had to reread because things just came completely out of left field and in a way that did not flow well. Also there has not been enough plot development and we are already 4 books in.
Something else is that Tamsin comes across as preachy, a lot. I enjoy a good dress down as much as anyone, however when you are constantly doing it (several times per book) it comes across as preachy, and diminishes the effect. It doesn’t matter if it is other students, parents, faculty, staff, or rulers, you bet Tamsin has bitched them out. Sometimes actions speak louder than words. So no need for so much exposition and just take action.
She also likes to reveal a lot of her private life and plans out in public, when it has been established that everyone’s hearing is really good and that there are a lot of spies out to get info on her. That comes across as a dumb thing to do and just poor strategy.
Lastly, the sex and relationships also bothered me a bit. The sex is very female dom, which is fine, but makes it a little unbelievable. She, a college student without a lot of relationships, conquests, or a lot of sexual experience really has all these men panting after her like slaves? Ok, that is sexy for a bit if you are able to suspend your disbelief, but not the best way to build a relationship. Add in that it tends to be pretty repetitive on what she wants from them (and what she wants is the only thing that matters) and lots of master/slave play (even if the words are not used to describe it as such) and it makes the sex scenes less believable. As for the relationships, we are 4 books in and they still can’t decide if they are serious? As a matter of fact there is still 1 member of the harem that has not been added. How many books is this going to be? Also the end of book 4 with how things developed and were left with Craftsman was not my favorite.
A lot still needs to happen and be developed in the story, characters, and relationships. The reason I gave it 3 ⭐️ in spite of having some reservations is because I WANT to know what happens next and will be looking forward to the next book. Hopefully the author gets a good editor and some of these issues get resolved.
First up: Author, PLEASE have an editor or an alpha or beta reader, or even ARC readers review this book and incorporate their feedback - way too many sentences that don't flow smoothly, that have missing words, bad grammar or punctuation etc. It's annoying when it's this bad for a brand new author, but for an author with this many books out, there should not be that many issues.
For me, this book just didn't feel like anything really happened - no real action, didn't feel like too much progression, and things that just didn't really make sense to me at all .
As for characters, unfortunately i'm just not liking most of them as much. I think Tamsin is supposed to come across as strong and badass, but she's also coming across as pushy and juvenile in a lot of things - constantly blowing raspberries, over the top reactions to sometimes minor things, juvenile behavior around adults like barging into professional meetings and yelling etc.
Darby just doesn't do it for me. I was a little intrigued by his prickly behavior in the first book, but didn't like him from book 3, and his personality is such a drastic change from book 1 and just doesn't work for me.
Craftsman just didn't make sense to me in this book. It literally didn't make sense how he acted partway through the book, and I think the end of the book just killed any liking I had for him.
I like Hudson, and I'm glad he was back spending some more time with Tamsin in this book, but he's kept too much in the background for my liking.
Luca i'm intrigued about.
At this stage, i'm honestly not sure if i'm going to continue with this story - too many issues and annoyances.
As I commented on another review, this book was a mess. Not very much coherent plot progession and these long rambling sentences, the meaning of which gets lost well before the punctuation. By the time I was at 65%, I just wanted it to be over. I think there could be a good story here again with the help of an editor or at least some beta readers, but until that happens, I think I'm done with this author.
I'm taking off 2 stars for errors and 1 for quality. There's not much movement on the plot in this one. It reads more like a novella. Please, please get a line editor. Rushing to get books out quickly is no excuse for being sloppy. This entire series would be 5 star with better editing, and honestly, some solid work on the sex scenes. Make it YA or give more detail, but the relationships with the harem are by far the weakest part of the series.
I tried really hard to just see past all the flaws in this series but I can't keep going. There are words missing all through all the books, terrible long, drawn out dialogue where she's either bossing everyone who is much more experienced than her around or yelling at people to "put them in their place".🙄 she is a selfish lover, neglectful of her relationships but expects all the loyalty and trust. It's terrible. Really. Just fucking awful. She is a walking contradiction and in no way that matters or is logical. You made a character that's 19 but she acts like a bitchy, annoying fifty year old. Hard pass on the rest of the series.
I'm bummed, because the premise was interesting. I loved that she was a fairy and her presence in our world would change the dynamic between all of the races and bring justice. I wish that it didn't turn into a chaotic messy storyline.
This story was flagged on Zon for have some editing issues or errors. Overall not too bad IMO, I’ve seen much worse. Most would have been picked up with N arc team. Now for my story review- I liked this ones a lot. We resolved some issues but I was really surprising but some of the things that weren’t resolved. Tamsin has even more things piled on her plate too. There were also some actions from key players that lacked context. Why did this character do this? Why was that character able to behave this way suddenly? Also, I felt like there should have been more issues with the NDA agreements for mental shield blocking class.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Tamsin is back and has more burdens and responsibilities than any 19 year old should. She takes a big hit when Mason goes off of the deep end and hurts her deeply almost killing her in his zeal to make her his mate. I hope that she fully claims her Dragon lover publicly, he needs to be hers fully, just like Darby is and even her professor even if that's supposed to be a secret. I love how she goes after evil guys especially ones who hurt women. I absolutely can't wait for the next book to this series!
Missing words, shit character dynamic, thoughtless writing
I bought the books till now. I can't continue reading about a gurl who literally walks around yelling at people and bidding them around as she throws money at them. The relationships are empty feeling, she is a selfish lover and I just can't finish this series. There's also missing words and slang thrown in for no reason, it's just awful.
A new reader definitely needs to start with book 1, or will be lost. The plot progression in this book seemed so slow & small, I felt like it was a rinse & repeat of the last book -to a degree. It lost my interest a time or 2. There also were a lot of gaps in the plot, things happened & weren't explained or just an aside mentioned that it happened. Things like that can work in movies, but not in books, where the reader has to fill in the gaps with what they are reading, not be surprised when it's mentioned briefly that it was done/happened- later on. My biggest gripe, this book was full of typos, missing words, words in the wrong place, misspelled words, run-on sentences, etc...
I don't feel like she's the confident, take no $hit girl that she was in book 1 & 2. She's not asking questions when she needs to & seems to be more focused on her libido than anything else -at times. And for her RH, Hudson has improved -overall- for now, so I think I can move past his slights. Darby, poor guy, seems the most stable in the RH so far. Julian, gosh, I hate him right now. That Tamsin doesn't cut him out of her RH altogether- is a mystery to me. He's done stupid things 2 times, that should have been enough for Tamsin from book 1 & 2 to cut him off from a relationship with her. But the Tamsin in book 4 seems much more needy & wishy washy when it comes to her overall attitude. It seems like Lucca might be added to the RH, though logistically, I'm not sure it's a good idea because of his father at this point, & I would have to have something big happen in the story to get past his father's horrible persona, at least for me as a reader.
Okay, hear me out: when I first read this book, I loved it. It was so full of passion and pain and just every strong emotion possible. But given this is my millionth time, I also hate it because I know it's going to hurt later, given what happened in the end.
I love this author and this series. While the writing isn't perfect, I find so much satisfaction with the execution of the various plots and the strength and feistiness of the main female character. I can't wait for book 5!
This series has run the gamut, rolling from an unknown to a super powerful undeclared - and all the drama that comes with it. I noticed a few editing errors or continuity issues, but they were minor for the most part.
Please note the following review encompasses the first six books of the SERIES. As each book depends on the prior books, I am not reviewing each individually to cut down on repetition. Following this review, I will be reviewing the series in batches of 5, with a final end review of the series as a whole.
As always, I will endeavor to minimize spoilers, but please read at your own risk.
First off, to readers who are just looking at this series. I was one of you. I understand the intimidation you likely feel seeing that this is a 26 freakin book series. For ages, I disregarded this series based on this fact, because, let's face it. That is a time commitment. However, I urge you to not be me. Be like Mikey (IYKYK).
I was utterly hooked from the first chapter. Artemis University is unlike any other campus. Sure, you find some similarities. You have the Queen B and her squad of mean girls. You have the sleazy guys who think they deserve for the hot chick to fall face forward in their laps. You have the beaten down, downtrodden, unpopular smart kids.
But you also have a headmaster at odds with corrupt school board members. You have professors who want to break free (from family, societal expectations, powerlessness, and more.) You have ride or die besties.
You have Tamsin. Who knows nothing about the supernatural world she's been brought (unwillingly) into, even though she has a dragon BFF. Tamsin and her unwavering loyalty, resolute courage, and utter willingness to do whatever is necessary to both be the change and enforce the change. She takes on all comers, and quite frankly, outclassed all of them. She is an utterly delightful main character, and I cannot wait to see how she continues to grow and develop. I have a gut feeling that she is going to continue to surprise me.
You have Tamsin's men. I'm not calling them out by name simply because I am enjoying the vicarious ride to find out who will make the cut. I know a couple, but others … who knows? I'm sure I will eventually find out. But mark my words, each of them are delectable.
This series was sold to me as a romance, and there are certain … expectations … for titles under that umbrella. I'm telling you now. Do not read this for the smut. I am not saying there is no smut. I am not saying that the given smut is bad. I am saying that so far, the author has skillfully woven the smut into the plot, and is only rarely gratuitous. This is a series for fans of riddles within puzzles within dreams. There is a metric frakton of plot points to keep you occupied, and the layers of each character make Shrek look like a glass tabletop. 6 books in and I continue to find surprises under the layers I'm slowly peeling away page by page. I told you. I'm hooked.
I am calling this first review here. Expect to find me extolling the phenomenal world this author has created, as well as some important plot notes that may intrigue you. But before I go, I do want to add a content warning of sorts because mental health matters. Contained in the story so far, you will find past trauma (physically, emotionally, and smexually.) There are forced abductions, bullying outside of the harem, references to ongoing trafficking, violence, attempted forced mating and SA, family disconnect and related trauma from both sides, and discussion of forced breeding. Please know your limits and read responsibly.
To say that Tamsin's plate is full to overflowing is an understatement. She's one person and she's trying to right so many wrongs.
The latest developments, Tamsin can up the value of basic crystals to a level of seven, totally unheard of but when she's really happy it happens. The other big one is heartbreaking, Darby and Tamsin were taking their relationship to the next level when she allowed him to drink from her. Big mistake and one she had no clue about. The people who should have been protecting her and him failed miserably to prevent poor Darby from going into bloodlust.
In this book, Tamsin once again let's those people have it in spades. She's more than just a little angry that no one told her vamps can't have fairy blood and wants to know everything that could be adverse and/or out her.
Now with the plans for a women's shelter, they are in a position to find those who are a danger to her. This leads to some surprising or rather not so surprising arrests.
Things get even weirder and then dangerous with Mason, the bear shifter who runs with Tamsin. He's always been a bit of a stalker but this goes way over that line.
I love the Harry Potter references and her English assignment is really fun and leads to an interesting invention. Her mental shielding class was a bit of a surprise though as Hudson was in it. He's a senior and this is a freshman class. Seems like Professor Koch was a bit lacking in his teaching methods and yes Tamsin calls him on it and gets him to make a deal. If she improves Hudson's shields in one class he resigns.
Once again there is much to keep up with in this book, Tamsin is again surprised by a meeting, well a dinner with dragon royalty. She does have plenty of backup with her though and also Hudson's aunt who is also a telepath. The dragons have a problem they need help with and Tamsin and her ability to charge up crystals is the answer.
There are also some very interesting interactions with the Rothchild's and Mel, one I really didn't expect.
I am really enjoying Tamsin's journey as she discovers more about herself and helping so many along the way.
I am getting ready to start the next book, I really need to know what happens next.
This contains spoilers, so please do not continue to read if you’ve not read the book. this book series is great. It’s awesome but the biggest problem is the main character is already perfect. When you read books with a main character that’s been through as much as this main character has been through you kind of see a character art you see them go through so many different things you see them grow. Our main character came to us having already been through some of the worst things imaginable, and already kind of being perfect she’s smart. She’s funny she’s extremely caring and then she already has a huge support system at her back even though she is quoting orphan. The problem with that is because she’s already so perfect if someone else messes up and I don’t mean the people messed up in big ways, but I mean if someone else makes even a mistake she immediately is jumping down their throat and judging them for it the problem is it makes it kind of an unnatural relationship and not a realistic reaction. There are times in the book and not in this one, but other books where people make mistakes and not mistakes that could kill her and not mistakes that could hurt her but mistakes that people make because we are fallible whether or not you’re a fictional character or not and she’s so quick to jump down their throat she’s so quick to judge them. She’s so quick to call people on their shit. The problem with that is it kind of becomes annoying because it’s almost like she has a holier than thou complex and, technically she doesn’t but as a character, she learned about her powers she grows in her powers. She learned about her people, but her character like her flaws. She has not grown. She is the same person we met in book one the problem with that is when you’re reading a book especially a series like this you want to see the character girl and not just in their powers not in their relationship, but in how they are and who they are as a person. I would love to see in future books her grow as a person. To understand people make mistakes to also not be as quick to judge the ones who love her.
This one was better in terms of showing more and less telling, but there was still tons of telling. I knew about Izzy and Tamsin’s blogging venture, but I had NO IDEA they had actually started it or went to Vancouver. In this particular part Izzy or Mel mentions getting all kinds of texts about going to a different country to try food and how she texted her these ideas. We saw none of that. Not one single text about it or inference. This happens often were sometimes the wording doesn’t make sense or it something the author is privy to but doesn’t explain the nuances enough or well.
I like the relationships, but I also wish she would have been a bit more blunt with Craftsman, I honestly thought he was finally bespelled or something nefarious.
I find myself being frustrated that Tamsin hasn’t told Darby what she is even though he had all these doubts.
The book most glosses over cool important things and goes on and on and on about what she’s eating. I get it, she can eat, she needs to eat etc, but it doesn’t need to be the focal point of the story. I also wasn’t happy with how much isn’t explained to the reader, I felt lost in many conversations.
And as to the plagues of last book we don’t see or hear anything about it, or who could have done it so even that isn’t tied up.
There is SO MUCH going on and too much for Tamsin to deal , somethings gotta give. This one at least ended in a better more appropriate place, I did feel like there was an ending here which was nice.
My Thoughts For the most part, this was a fun read. We meet a lot of new faces, some of which are likely to be important to Tamsin. Some cute pranks are has as well as some good love scenes.
About the Characters Tamsin is resilient, smart, and very pragmatic. Craftsman is a little dumb in this book. Darby is smart, supportive, and loving - great boyfriend material. Hudson is just my favorite, so I don't care what's going on with him, I love him and hope he gets it together for Tamsin.
Things I Liked There's a big, scary incident with Mason in this book, and I appreciated how Mason himself was handled as it was determined he was not mentally sound. I liked the meeting with the dragon royals and their experience walking through a market discussing culture. I especially liked how Tamsin viewed the guards. I like the new guys, Ray and Zack a lot.
Thing I Didn't Like I love Craftsman, so it makes me so sad to see him so oblivious. I still don't really know how I feel about Lucca. He doesn't seem to be a bad guy, but he did make a pretty bad call not to tell Tamsin about her running buddy.
More Thoughts I like Edelman, but he's the subject of Tamsin's pragmatism. Going back to the dragon royals, I'm fairly certain at least one of them could tell about Tamsin. Seriously, the worst kept secret. She's just lucky it seems so far it's only the right people learning she's a fairy.
Does it standalone? No.
Bottom Line Running the gamut of emotions, the author brings us down just to cheer us back up.
This just keeps getting better and better. I seriously wanted to punch Julian but he fixed his mistake and my girl Tamsin punished him well for it. Tamsin is just an amazing, insightful, reasonable, complex character. I felt so bad about her relationship with Darby going weird but I was happy about their decision. I loved getting more into the dragons world and Mel’s family drama. This totally started out with a whirlwind of action and revealings in the first couple pages. I was so disappointed and shocked by our bear shifter. What went wrong with him? You just can’t help but to get enthralled by this series. I need more! Can’t wait for the next book! Can’t wait to see what cause our amazing mc is going to fight for next? Her standing up for women and the minority and for what’s wrong is really what we need in the real world as well. If only we had a Tamsin and her crew to fight for us. Erin R Flynn you rock!
I like the plot of this series. The idea of fairies keeping the balance is one that I have not read before. It is interesting to see how Tamsin is able to help the fairy creatures while also acclimating to this new life she now has. However, I am not a fan of the writing. At times it was difficult to follow because some sentences do not make a lot of sense. It is not so bad that the reader cannot fill in the blanks and decipher the sentences, but it does not flow as well as I wish it did. Could definitely benefit from some editing.
Also, and this is strictly my opinion, Tamsin can be a bit of a brat and annoying at times. She tends to overreact at times and be overly rude to other characters. I still like her as a character, but sometime I cringe after reading how she talks to others.
Overall this is not the best book of the series, but still interesting. I'm looking forward to reading more about the sanctuaries and learning what happened to Faerie.
I love this series, I really really do. We have a badass female lead who doesn’t let her boys get away with anything..
It focuses a lot on sexism, abuse, ageism, elitist arses, homophobia and a whole host of modern day issues that the main female lead just takes to with a jack hammer of no nonsense girl power!
All through the 5 books I’ve read so far I’m thinking ‘you go girl!’.
I really hope we get some answers about the fae people soon as I don’t want it to drag on for like 10+ books but I love the pace and character building so far..
The characters are flawed and it’s just brilliant! It adds an element of realism to the books.
It’s funny, lovely and sometimes just downright heartbreaking.. but I promise you won’t be disappointed with this series, it’s the book series I’ve been waiting a really long time for but never knew..
I have loved reading this series! So sad it’s not finished yet because I totally can’t wait for Tamsin’s full happily ever after. Most of the time when a series is longer than 4 or 5 books I lose interest because I feel like it’s too much of the same stuff dragging the series out. That feeling didn’t hit me at all until about book 10 and then it was short lived. I love Tamsin and the journey we get to take with her throughout this. Her growth and friendships, and her clarity in viewing the world around her make this story amazing. I felt the intro to book 18 was really confusing. I had to go back and double check that I hadn’t skipped a book. There’s a bit of minor editing that would really make the reading so much better. Missing words and improper (or no) use of commas were the biggest culprits, but it was still worth reading. As much as I loved it this book isn’t for everyone. There’s plenty of language, sex, and some violence that would be disturbing to some.
The story is great, but the author really needs to do a writing course, there is so much repetition and it just gets frustrating and ruins the story. The dialogue is constantly followed up with "she purred" " he purred" "I purred" everybody is purring!! And it makes no sense to the story line. Its like the author googled different ways of saying 'he said' and now just uses purred constantly instead. And if the characters are not all purring they are blowing raspberries. Maybe blowing a rasberry means something different to this writer? but the FMC is always blowing raspberries before making a statement, sad , happy, doesn't matter just blows a raspberry. Its such a shame as the story is good, but it becomes really hard to over look the poor writing
I just can’t anymore. It’s like the author has no experience in heterosexual relations. The MC comes across as middle school immature and petty and a man hater. But then is involved with men.. and it’s just not clicking. I get the backstory.. but this is NOT how any human being reacts. Punishing people without justification because “they hurt her feelings”.. I kept hoping the MC would mature. But I’m beyond my level of tolerance after the author scooted over multiple “woke ideologies” in this book. Now I “get it”.. and just done. Best of luck. Sincerely wish the author the best. But just not capable of rolling my eyes through another book. Two thumbs down.
So I really like this series, but there is truly sooooo much going on in every single book. Some of it’s hard to keep up with. I’m happy she didn’t split with Darby. I like him a lot. Craftsman, didn’t even actually truly apologize until they are in the middle of having sex. I don’t truly think he even realizes he made a huge mistake.
I knew mason was deranged, I don’t know why just the way he acted but yeah I knew it.
I’m glad she told Mel’s parents, but I hate that she had to just to get them to stop fighting.
I kinda wish Izzy was involved more, I feel we don’t see her much and I hate that. She’s so sweet, but Hardly involved even with Tams getting her away from her terrible family so early in the book series.
Tamsin is still dealing with a lot. She's protecting her friends, the fairy folks, her secret and now she has to take care of the aftermath of what Mason did to her. Moreover, some of the dragon clans ask for her help to protect their homes. I feel like sometimes Tamsin is in way over her head, but she recognises it and ask for the help of her lawyers. What I found interesting at first, but now I don't like it as much is her relationship with the men in her harem. It's still not a "relationship" per se as they all don't know where they stand, and I wish I could see more of the romantic aspect.
