Paul O'Sullivan
30 books41 followersFather Paul O'Sullivan, O.P., was born on February 7, 1871. After studying in Dublin, he went on to Rome, where he was ordained a Dominican. He then pursued a Lectorate degree for theology, which in turn prepared him for his future career in writing simple, profound books and preaching to the faithful. Father O'Sullivan also founded the "Catholic Printing Press" and established the Rosary Association, one of several associations he created with the Church's permission. He wrote on and had a great devotion to St. Philomena as well. He died in 1958, on the Feast of the Presentation.

‘The angels are pure spirits, the mighty Princes of Heaven who stand before God, gazing on His unveiled presence. They are burning fires of love, filled to overflowing with the plenitude of happiness. The angels are the perfect images of God, mirrors of His divine perfections, reflecting His love, His beauty, His holiness, His power, all His divine attributes and perfections, but each angel in his own special way. No two angels are alike, no two are equal. God’s perfections are infinite, and the countless millions of angels reflect these perfections in a divinely marvelous way. No two men, no two women, are identically alike, but the difference between them is relatively slight, whereas the difference between two angels is vast, complete. Every angel is … a species all in himself!’
This final fact was what overwhelmed me when I first learned about it for my consecration to my Guardian Angel back in 2016. It is still hard for me to imagine that my Guardian Angel is that unique from say the Guardian Angel of my husband. They are two entirely different species?! WOW! To think God goes to so much trouble and creativity for each one of us? For each individual human being He ever created. And yet, the Choir of Angels, the lowest of the nine choirs, isn’t even the largest choir, it’s the choir of Seraphim, those burning ones closest to the throne of the Almighty.
This little book covers a lot of ground for its size. It starts off with a Forward reminder to connect (or reconnect) with your best friend—that invisible partner from birth who wants more than anything to get you to Heaven, your Guardian Angel (GA). Someone we often forget, including myself despite my consecration.
The first chapter is about the Angel of Portugal, His appearances to the children of Fátima and why they were so significant. Most likely this is because no other national GA has ever appeared and the answer for that lies in the fact that Portugal has had from the earliest times a very special love for the Holy Angels.
Chapter 2 covers recent Angelic appearances.
Chapter 3 describes the Holy Angels in their powers of intelligence and will, both so far superior to ours as to be beyond measure. There are examples of how God has used the Angels in Sacred Scripture, and the Doctors of the Church have written about their vast and yet also minute knowledge and duties. Fascinating!
Chapter 4, Where are the Angels, was of particular delight to me because it encourages us to become aware of the Guardian Angels of the people all around us and even more to greet them, pray to them and engage them especially when we have difficulties with loved ones or enemies. This concept is not new to me as it was discussed during my consecration, but it was good to have the reminder, and it was also expanded here.
In chapter 5, we look at when the Angels were created. Before being admitted to see God, they were tried. In this trial, by far the greater number remained faithful to God and were immediately received into the Heaven of the Blessed Trinity and were allowed to gaze on the unveiled beauty of God and could no longer sin. Some of these, the faithful angels, always stand before God and are called the assisting angels, the Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones, who are thought to never leave the Heavenly realm. The ministering angels are the Dominations, Virtues and Powers, who guard the elements of the Universe; and the Principalities, Archangels, and Angels who care especially for humanity.
Chapter 6 lists all that our Guardian Angels do for us and I could not begin to summarize this, so you will just have to read the book yourself! Suffice it to say, you would BE LOST without this friend extraordinaire. Start calling on him more, booklady!
Chapter 7 includes some interesting anecdotes about GAs who came to the aide of persons in need.
Chapter 8 was a recounting of Angel stories in Sacred Scripture.
Chapter 9 was dedicated entirely to the three great Princes of the Church, Sts. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, who I each have a special devotion to, so I loved this chapter and much as I thought I knew about these amazing saints, I learned more!
I could hardly read Chapter 10 which was about the Angels and Martyrs. It was supposed to show how the Holy Angels gave these great souls the strength and superhuman fortitude to endure horrendous suffering. Even so, reading about what they endured was too much for me, so heavy skimming.
Chapters 11 and 12 were about the Angels and the Dominican Order, the friars and the nuns respectively. This particular religious order seems to have been highly favored by the Holy Angels. I confess to having holy envy of them. However, as this book was written by a Dominican, there might be just a trace of holy bias. 😉
Chapter 13 was about St. Frances of Rome and the Angels and having read about her visions in another book, The Visions of Saint Frances of Rome: Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven Revealed, I already knew God had blessed her with a unique relationship to her GA.
In conclusion, Chapter 14, reiterates that the Holy Angels want to help us all, not just the Saints and Martyrs, or rather, they are with everyone so that, we can fulfill whatever God’s will is for us including sainthood and/or martyrdom, including the hidden and ‘ordinary’ variety.
Even as long as this review is, it barely skims the richness of this book. You NEED to read it yourself and develop and/or deepen your relationship with your Holy Guardian Angel!
If you get the Kindle version of this book, there are some excellent pictures of angels and prayers as well which unfortunately are not included in the paperback version.

A few years ago I picked up and read several volumes by Father Paul. I picked them up because they were part of a promotion from TAN books in an email blast. They were promoting a bundle of books by Father Paul O'Sullivan. I know I had seen the covers before. And based on when the books were first published maybe even back to the Catholic Book Stores of my youth. I looked at the 6 titles in the bundle and ended up reading them all. They did not disappoint, and before I even finished the first, I had picked up a couple of the other titles. For those not familiar as I was not:
“Fr. Paul Henry O'Sullivan, O.P., S.T.L., P.G., E.D.M., was born in Tralee, Ireland in 1871 and died in Lisbon, Portugal in 1958.”
Somehow I had missed this volume, On Goodreads his last name is spelt without the ’ so maybe I missed it that way. I ordered a copy of this for a Priest friend in a print edition and picked up the eBook for myself at the same time. The description of this volume is:
“A wonderful book showing how the angels have visited people innumerable times in the past, how they do so today, and would do even more if we asked them. Also, how they prevent accidents, comfort us, help us, and protect us from the devils. This is another excellent read from the pen of Father Paul O'Sullivan. It was amazing to read the history of apparitions, and theology. It was excellent to read about the history and traditions. While I was reading this I shared a few quotes with my son (age 15) and youngest daughter (age 11) and they both want to read it.
This is another great read from father Paul O'Sullivan O.P.’s pen. It is a book that could be read repeatedly during your lifetime and benefit from with every reading. I know that I have plans to continue pursue his other works that are available in English and will likely return to this one and read it again. This book is clearly written, easily accessible. And a wonderful volume for any Catholic to pick up and read. I can easily recommend it.

Very inspiring and interesting. Angles are something we don't really think about and just take for granted. But they are so much more then that and we should think about them way more often then we do and thank them everyday for all the do for us since they do so much for us yet it all seems to go unnoticed.

Excellent book. From point of education. It tells us, by catholic tradition, that every human being has its own guardian angel. Its love for us can only be compared with mother's love for her children. The book also describes how angels helped people in the past, with the examples of archangels Michael, Gabriel and Rafael.

This is a wonderful book about angels. I'm not someone who really believed in their daily presence. However, the descriptions and miracles of this book is very convincing and the book explains how to see, pray and ask for their help and guidance.
The Scriptures proof and the life of certain saints provide all the evidence. Loved reading it and am now convinced about their presence.

I appreciate that this book did continually remind me that there are in fact Angels and really emphasized that they deserve respect because they do so much for us. It lost me in its organization and its dated-ness. Great anecdotes, slightly lacking delivery.

Another fantastic book by Fr. Paul O'Sullivan!
The topic of angels fascinates me. I don't believe in "coincidence or mere luck" our guardian angels are always looking out for the well-being of us! I used to listen to a lighthouse media cd on angels and this book really reminded me of it.

More like a 4.5 star. Brilliant book and I learned so much about the angels! I will take the lessons from this book with me for the rest of my life. So comforting, hopeful, and amazing!

This book was ok… I feel like the author could have written it a lot better. It was just very slow in my option

I am well read on many biblical topics. I was intrigued by this short book of 148 pages. Now, going into this book, I already had an idea about the many fallacies that too many Catholics have about angels. Unfortunately, this book which was first published in 1945 is a representation of the misinformation about angels that the Catholic Church has allowed to perpetuate. It does more harm than to educate because it is very unscriptural and contains too much myth and loose interpretations over biblical fact.
The book does have some truths in it about the nature (that they are a species separate from man), origin and the scriptural role of angels. Unfortunately, it allow perpetuates too many myths. Among those are that angels: desire to be friends with us (they are here to do God's bidding and to aid us); are to be worshipped (God speaks against this in the bible); are omnipresent (only God can accomplish this); and are saints (a designation only given to humans). These unbiblical statements go against the faith and the bible.
The best parts of the book are the stories of angels helping the faithful and the martyrs and the history of the fall of those angels who disobeyed God and were cast out of Heaven. Fr. O'Sullivan is clear and correct in stating that the remaining angels are loyal to God and obedient of God's will. Father O'Sullivan does confirm the fact that angels and people are separate species. One cannot become the other. This is a fact that the Catholic Church has tried in vain to preach to the masses. I am hopeful that Catholics who mistakenly believe that people become angels upon death will abandon this heresy.
The book does feature many colorful and inspiring tales of angelic apparitions and intervention. The book ends with tales of angelic miracles and a call for su to be open to angelic intervention.
Overall, it was a god book. But, I still hold Billy Graham's book, Angels to be a far superior and better book on the subject.
The book does have some truths in it about the nature (that they are a species separate from man), origin and the scriptural role of angels. Unfortunately, it allow perpetuates too many myths. Among those are that angels: desire to be friends with us (they are here to do God's bidding and to aid us); are to be worshipped (God speaks against this in the bible); are omnipresent (only God can accomplish this); and are saints (a designation only given to humans). These unbiblical statements go against the faith and the bible.
The best parts of the book are the stories of angels helping the faithful and the martyrs and the history of the fall of those angels who disobeyed God and were cast out of Heaven. Fr. O'Sullivan is clear and correct in stating that the remaining angels are loyal to God and obedient of God's will. Father O'Sullivan does confirm the fact that angels and people are separate species. One cannot become the other. This is a fact that the Catholic Church has tried in vain to preach to the masses. I am hopeful that Catholics who mistakenly believe that people become angels upon death will abandon this heresy.
The book does feature many colorful and inspiring tales of angelic apparitions and intervention. The book ends with tales of angelic miracles and a call for su to be open to angelic intervention.
Overall, it was a god book. But, I still hold Billy Graham's book, Angels to be a far superior and better book on the subject.

All About the Angels has helped me to love and appreciate my dear, dear Guardian Angel and all the other Angels more, because I didn't love them enough.
Whatever I say about this book will not do it justice. All About the Angels is one of the best books I have ever read. I highly, highly recommend reading it.

Great book!
Excellent stories about angels that show us how important it is to talk to and remember your Guardian Angel that we all have whether Catholic or not. God has blessed us all with a companion to look out for us everyday and night.
