“Love love love!!!! I can't wait to read more from this series!” —Crystal, Amazon Reviewer ★★★★★
There’s a darkness inside her, and an evil only she can stop…
Skylar’s world is comprised of a few things:
Getting out from under her famous mother’s shadow.
Making it through the Academy of Magic without getting herself killed.
And trying not to murder the devilishly handsome, so-infuriating-she-wants-to-strangle-him Asher, once they’re partnered with each other.
So when she discovers a new baddie gathering power in her city, someone with insane magic and a powerful grudge against her family, Skylar knows it’s her chance to step up to stop them.
The only problem? She’s got magic of her own. Dark magic. Uncontrollable magic. Magic she has to keep hidden.
As maddening as Asher is, she’ll have to work with him if she wants any chance at stopping this new threat. But with her darkness growing more powerful by the day, hiding what she is will likely be impossible. And soon, her biggest enemy just might be herself…

Sean Fletcher was born in the broiling, arid state some people lovingly refer to as Texas. He is the Amazon bestselling author of YA fantasy, in addition to other forthcoming books whose characters will not give him a moment's peace until they get their turn in the spotlight. When not making things up and putting them on paper, he can be found hiking, biking, or traveling, sometimes all at the same time.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters and story are interesting. What happens when your parents are the people who saved the world and you grow up in their shadow? Well this book shows you just what can happen. It's well written and very entertaining and I can't wait for more
I have never read this author before this book, and to be honest I thought I had. Well, I will again after reading this one. I have to be honest that I’m not a big fan of YA, mostly because my two kids are just about the same age, and I have a hard time separating the fiction from the nonfiction. LOL! Anyway, this book is very well-written, and the characters were interesting. I thought the protagonist was a little immature, but she is only 17 (hence why I am not a huge fan of YA). She did get better as the book went on, and I quite enjoyed the book from start to finish. In fact, I am hooked and have to know what happens next. If you love YA, definitely give this one a try; you’ll love it! Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
WOW 😯 this is a fast paced , action packed urban fantasy read that once you start you will be glued to your seat and be unable to move, it’s that good! Well written you’ve got Shifters, vampires, magic, romance, a sassy and snarky heroine, a swoon worthy hero, twists and turns that will put you in a spin and magic! An truly addictive read that will have you begging for the next book!
What can I say about this book hmmm....is READ IT helpful?!
Okay, okay...fine...but you should really read it still. This book was an amazing kickstart to a new series and I was hooked on it to almost scary levels! From page one I was intrigued and by page two I just needed more.
I loved sooo much about this story it felt unique and powerful. It started off a little different to the academy books I have read which I really liked. I enjoy very much when I find uniqueness especially in a style of books I read a lot of.
So this book starts off with Skylar already knowing of her abilities…well sorta, there’s things she isn’t aware of, like what powers she really does hold, but she knows of the magical world of magic and magical beings and she’s even been brought up at the New York Magic Academy…but she’s beginning a new path at the Academy one that will be a lot harder. You see there’s so many years they do at the Academy and then they can choose to move on, leave, get jobs etc but then there is the option of staying on for another four years and doing like a Masters. Where they will be taught a lot more advanced stuff and get a different level of training. So here we find the starting of our book, just before the commencement of the Entrance Ceremony.
But in true Skylar fashion she isn’t running on time and turns up late after being at the Beastology stables, feeding some baby dragons, that she kinda wasn’t meant to even be there. As you’ll learn very quickly Skylar isn’t one for rules or being kept in a box. It says it all on page one.
“Naturally, I didn’t let something as silly as a rule stop me.”
Clearly these two would get on fantastically lol
I think this should be this girls motto lol. Like seriously it should be.
Once she makes it to the ceremony without too much drama…and is beside her bestie, Mia, who is trying not to laugh at her friends ways. As everything begins moving on as it should, with only an extra ‘Skylar touch’ when she meddles with one of the kids robes to change colours when on stage (you are seriously never going to be bored with her around lol). We then move onto her year and as is the custom for the newbie Masters, they are assigned Partners to which they are to be with for the next upcoming years…and who else does she get paired with? Of course the one person she can’t stand Asher Dunadine. Old time best friend but now categorised under total jerk (according to Skylar) and who have not been close for years. And this is totally them ↓ Yep, yep.
…and now she’s stuck with him and her best friend, Mia, just got assigned to Asher’s best friend Colson, who btws Mia is majorly crushing on. Sounds like fun times ahead right?
Well for us…I don’t think they are too thrilled about this. I’m sure they’ll get over it.
Things get right down to it after this, and we have a magical being called a Manticore that attacks and of course Skylar is right in the thick of it. You see there’s one thing you need to know about this girl. Her mum is kinda a big deal in the magical world. She’s one of the top fighters, being classed as a hero, along with…can you guess? Yep, yep Asher’s dad Lucien who, oh yep is also the Headmaster.
So you see for these two students they have a lot to live up to, in a sense as everyone expects a lot from them. A lot of pressure to not just pass but to be the best. But for Skylar she feels like she’s almost lost in her Mum’s shadow and is trying to break free of that. So sometime, okay most of the time she is pretty reckless. But she puts a lot of pressure on herself and doesn’t really let many get close to her because she feels like she has to do everything on her own. Be the best by herself, with no help. You can kinda picture the struggle Asher is going to have here right? I know I should probably feel a little sorry for the guy but
Its not that I’m mean but they are perfect for each other…and there’s strong chemistry so…
These are how the best relationships start right readers? The girl thinks they are jerk and then they learn they aren’t nearly as bad as they thought and the guy realises that the girl isn’t everything she’s showing and then things start getting better. In Sklar and Asher’s case though, they are both pretty stubborn but they work out some of the stuff…there’s still a very longs ways for both of them to go but they make improvements. Some lol.
“You know,” I said nervously, “just because we understand each other a little better doesn’t mean I’m going to stop giving you a hard time.” He smiled. A full, dazzling smile. “I can’t think of anything better.”
A little about the story….a lot really happens. Some really cool stuff I was extremely interested in. Not long into their partnering up – all partners are roomed together, which is important to know. So basically Mia and Skylar share a room and Asher and Colson share but they are grouped together, like in an apartment I guess…anywho, so not long into the year Mia gets kidnapped and Skylar not thinking just dashes off after the person with her friend…leaving behind Colson and Asher. Except she soon learns that the person she is following wants to be followed…and she meets this woman who is set on revenge about something Skylar’s mum did…and they weren’t really after her friend but her.
But from this event, Skylar is worrying that something is inside her. See, she’s hearing this guys voice in her. Which in a magical world is never ever a good sign or any world…but as the story goes on she learns she has a darkness inside her and she is rightfully so terrified of it, when she realises what it is and what it can do.
What it had given me, what it had done…this wasn’t magic. This was monstrous. I stumbled forward, legs weak. “I didn’t…what is this?” I stared at my arms. The smoky darkness was there, but instead of elation I felt only disgust. I’d wanted to kill. I’d thought nothing of the destruction I was causing.
There is a new darkness gathering in New York a power that is seeking revenge and something a little more, and it has its sight on Skylar…and it’s prepared to take everything down that she loves, to get what it wants.
Skylar teams up with her classmates to try and work out who and what this Society is after and why they are after her. But one thing Skylar is keeping very close to her chest…a secret she is afraid could be her undoing, is the darkness inside her. But sometimes darkness is needed to fight darkness and they are going to need everything they have to get through this alive. Except the thing is, whenever she runs off to fight these people, Asher thinks she’s just doing it to get attention to be the best so he’s really not too impressed with her and then they tend to butt heads a lot in an epic way. Like for example this scene. Least this didn’t turn into a full-blown argument but I just loved this scene.
“Let’s make one thing clear since it obviously hasn’t sunk in: you’re not alone in this anymore. That means you let us in on whatever insane plans you come up with. I’m not dying via your stupidity.” “Stop being overdramatic, we haven’t died yet. And I always fill people in on what I’m doing.” “Do you? Because thirty seconds ago you nearly filled us with holes. Does that sound like communication?” I tried to pull the door open, but Asher easily held it shut. We both glared at each other. “Communicate,” he repeated. “You’re not the only one who’s going to suffer if you—we—screw this up.” “I get it, Dr. Phil.”
I loved so much about this book and I automatically connected to the characters in this story. There were times I was like Skylar you are awesome but maybe pull it back a little and think things through lol…but hey I guess that’s why she was paired with Asher…and he’s more than happy to tell her that. To be the practical side of her brain. See told you…perfect. for. each. other!
“It’s just…that’s what I’m good at, you know? If it doesn’t work, I keep trying until it does.” “Maybe that’s not the best way to go about things. If something’s not working, you probably want to look at it from a different angle.” “I’m not really the best at that.” “Which is why I’m here.” I frowned at him. “What’s that mean?” “I mean as your partner. That’s what partners do. Each of them approaches problems in a way the other might not have thought of.” “So if we suck then it’s both of our fault.” “I…guess that’s one way of looking at it.”
Trust Skylar to come to that conclusion haha. Man, I love this chick. Her fight and determination, to see something through…but what I loved the most with this…is that with the friendship of not just Asher but also Colson and Mia we see a growth in all the characters. As they work out how to be as a team. They might not be perfect but together each of their weaknesses is another strength. So that is what makes it perfect.
Be brought into a world where nothing is quite clear, where secrets are being kept and where friendships grow and new relationships develop. This is a story you won’t want to miss. It is engaging and the kind of book you just won’t want to put down.
This is the first book I’ve ever read by Sean Fletcher and if you are in the same boat guys you need to start reading his works now! I know I won’t be just stopping at this book.
Thank you so much, Sean, for the chance to read and review this amazing story. I can’t wait for more, like….seriously…I need more of this. If the next book was out already…I know this ↓ would be me.
This is one of those books that will take you completely away from reality and the moment you resurface, you’re just lost and don’t know anything anymore.
Okay I think I’ve talked your ears clear off by now so I’m gonna leave before you all start doing this to me.
I know I picked up a YA book, but it hit as way more immature than I expected. Like, the FMC is so unlikable and annoying. Was that just me??
I feel like this book jumps in pretty quickly, and what we know of this world bordered on info-dumping. I still don't know why What's-Her-Name (sorry, I really do keep forgetting) is so cocky and unlikable. If her only reason is her famous mom giving her a complex...that isn't good enough. Get over yourself, kiddo. Also, it made it sound like she resented her mom, but apparently they are super close? That wasn't alluded to at all and really surprised me.
When her best friend gets kidnapped, naturally What's-Her-Name, hitherto known as WHN, doesn't go for help. No, she jumps out the window after them, in the middle of the night, out of the safety of the school and into the city. Brilliant. This almost gets her killed, as it should, but then she loses them anyway AND realizes she is now hopelessly lost.
Her partner and her friend's partner (Asher & Colson) catch up to her after the fact, which is probably for the best, because she is not the badass she thinks she is. Not that they are much better, but at least they aren't high on themselves. But what is interesting to me is how they butt heads with WHN the whole time, cause she thinks she knows best, but then in a crucial scene in which they are trying to get information, WHN thinks, 'We filled her in on about as much as we felt comfortable.' Why is that interesting? Well, if they've been arguing and disagreeing this whole time, why did this once did they manage to be on the same page, without consulting with each other first? They non-verbally agreed what to share and what not to, just like that? I mean, could that be the start of a well-functioning partnership? Sure. Did it feel like that? Absolutely not.
Then, at one point in the chase/investigation, WHN is contemplating going back to the school for help, but realizes that isn't what she wants to or thinks she should do. And I am lost, because I distinctly remember you being lost. And realizing that there was too much magic around you for your homing spell to actually lead you home. So which is it? You can't go back, or you don't want to? Because those are very different things....
WHN has a touching scene with Colson, Mia's partner, in which he reveals he is part giant, and basically he is afraid for people to know. Afraid they will fear him. And her big pep talk is 'just be yourself'. Like, literally, that's it. That is all she has to say. Wow. *slow clap* Life-changing. No one has ever said that before! She should have maybe stuck with her original train of thought, about how he could use to speak up more and communicate with people so he seems more personable and less intimidating. But no, why would this useless character say anything worthwhile??
WHN detests her partner, Asher, because they used to be friends and then he went away for a summer and became distant, and...well, I guess that is reason to hate him? But then they have their own touching scene, in which he gives her some hints as to what is really going on with him and why they aren't close anymore. And she is just shocked to realize that her former best friend, who has an equally powerful and famous parent might also feel inadequate. Might be faking it until he makes it, just like her. I'm telling you, she is so damn selfish. All she thinks about is her own feelings. Don't get too cozy, babe, he's still out of your league. And way more personable, too boot.
There is a magical fight later in the book, in which multiple times the magicians use a spell to crack the stone floor. A) Cracking the floor always seems like a bad idea. B) Cracking the floor of a cave you do not know the depths to or stability of...stupid. Just saying.
"There is only power and those strong enough to seek it." You SOB, you stole that line. Rowling said it first, you know. "There is only power and those too weak to seek it."
Oh, don't worry, this is stolen, too. "Bravery isn't an absence of fear, it's a product of being afraid and choosing to act anyway." Meg Cabot, I do believe. I think she phrased it, "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the knowledge that something else is more important." If my wording is off, forgive me, but I know a stolen platitude when I see it.
Those aren't all that is stolen. No part of this book feels original. The famous parent(s) to live up to, the magic school, the former best friend who 'mysteriously' changed over the summer, the darkness inside her, any of it. Hell, the ending is practically the same as Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone; pre-end-of-year-feast and post-dungeons-and-Voldemort. Only, that ending was better. And it is quite fresh for me, as I just read that, too.
Called by Darkness is an entertaining start to an urban fantasy YA series. It is set in a somewhat harrypotter-sh magical academy in New York. The muggles are called Norms here, and they can't see the academy. The narrator Skylar and her school buddy Asher live in the shadow of their famous parents who have won legendary magical battles in another series that I have not read. Skylar feels like she needs to live up to her mother's legacy and Asher is the headmaster's son. They used to be good friends when they were younger but nowadays their relationship is strained. The advanced students get partnered with another student and Skylar is upset that she was paired with Asher. There is a magical attack against the school, and her friend Mia gets kidnapped. Skylar, Asher and Mia's study partner Colson go searching for her. Colson and Asher don't see Skylar as a team player and she needs to learn to trust and communicate better. However, she is keeping a big secret: there is a darkness inside her that gives her power but it doesn't seem entirely safe to use it. I enjoyed this story, the world the author built, the snarky narrator voice and the developing relationship between Asher and Skylar. I read this as a part of a four-book box set I received from Booksprout and I'm looking forward to the next book. Minor spelling issues.
Favorite quote: "I've heard ducking sometimes helps with not dying."
I loved this book. It was a light read that still managed to pack lots of detail, great characters, a fantastic world inside and out of the academy, and a fantastic plot.
My only complaint would be that the FMC is entirely immature and self absorbed, but I’m not even going to critique that because I sense that she’s about to go through some major character development. I also appreciate that while she is annoyingly flawed, she accepts criticism and does truly intend to become better. Personal development is hard, but I have faith she’ll get there over the course of this series. I’m looking forward to it. There also wasn’t much detailing the rift between her and Asher, but again, it didn’t bother me too much. There’s just enough to keep it going and keep it interesting.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book so much! The flow was spot on. The plot was fun, intriguing, mysterious even if possibly predictable, and packed full of action, suspense and budding romance. It has everything I enjoy in a fantasy book! There were even a couple of scenes that made me laugh out loud. I appreciated that there was legit, natural humor in this book without having to make every joke about sex or bodily functions. I’d give it 5 stars, if there had been just a little bit more attention to details. I’d give it a solid 4.5 though! This was the first I’ve read by this author, but I’ll definitely be looking into his other works.
This is the first book in the Darkness Within series by Sean Fletcher. Skylar is a student at the New York Academy of Magic who’s juggling more than just exams. She is living in the shadow of her famous mother, surviving magical training and hiding a dangerous secret of uncontrollable dark magic. When a powerful new villain emerges with a vendetta against her family, Skylar sees a chance to prove herself. But to stop this threat, she’s forced to team up with Asher, her infuriating partner. As their reluctant alliance deepens, so does the danger—not just from the enemy, but from the darkness growing inside Skylar herself. This story contains magical mayhem, slow-burn romance, snarky banter, and a world full of shifters, vampires, and secrets. I really enjoyed this fantastic young adult urban fantasy.

Skyler and Asher are both enrolled in the academy. They used to be great friends. Her mother and his father are hero's. They fought and best the evil from their day. Skylers father is also a hero in his own right. She has a lot to live up to. Her best friend is Mia, who has a crush on Colson. It's a story of coming into your own, except that Sky has an evil darkness inside of her that could take over at some point.
The person that placed the evil Prince inside of Sky wants to destroy the academy. Someone has to figure out how to stop her. It's an interesting story with characters and a story line that is a good read.
Meet Skylar & Asher, 2 witches who have lived in the shadows of their parents heroic greatness. Their entire student life is overshadowed by what their parents did and each of them is managing things in their own way.
But will they come into their own powers while all the while chasing their parents path? Or will they break through their own expectations to find their own paths, own life and more than anything their ownself?
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A previous reviewer called one of the heroines Skylar a spoilt brat, I guess she came across like that in the very beginning, as the book moved on so did she. She feels very deeply about her friends, her school and her family in that order. There is nothing she will not do for Mia and prove it when Mia is kidnapped by an enemy of Skylar’s Mother. The story is fast paced, full of twists and turns and enjoyable fun. Grab yourself a copy and curl up in your favourite reading spot with your favourite beverage and enjoy yourself in a fabulous series. Highly recommended.
The Author has written a book that will appeal to anyone looking for a good fantasy book. Skyler is in a school that teaches how to use their magic. They are learning but there are people trying to destroy the school so they can get the students to work for them. Skyler 's mother is one of the hero's and is admired by all of the students and she is trying to live up to her mother's standard and sometimes she messes up when she tried too much. Great book and I can't wait for the next in the series.
What an incredible read! I loved the well-developed academy world and the culture of the supernatural and how EVERY mythical creature existed in some way. There were some startling similarities to Harry Potter (which is always my fear in reading academy stories). And the author kept switching between past tense and present tense. But other than that, a really well-written story. Clean and easy to follow. The narrative voice was FULL of sassy personality that I just loved. It made Skylar's character really leap off the page! Eager to continue with the series :)
I still have mixed feelings about the book. It's a really easy and quick read, which helped me a lot to finish the book. The story includes all possible elements of fantasy (from magic to all kinds of creatures), which can confuse you a bit. Otherwise, I liked the action itself, I was missing some kind of plot twist to be able to say wow. I liked the characters and I didn't roll my eyes at them (which is a rarity). Considering this is the 1st book in a series, it still ends nicely. That's why I won't continue reading the series (at least for now).
A very enjoyable academy themed YA paranormal fantasy. I love the intrepid young heroine Skylar whose antics added a touch of humor. This is just the start of her adventures with her friends and fellow students while living within the shadow of a famous and powerful mother. A great beginning for this new series!

Called by Darkness is full of action and exciting! It’s full of magic and supernatural beings! Add to that a snarky kick butt heroine and your in for a treat! This book is well written and will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout!

This spin-off (or continuation??) of Mage's apprentice series, is a wonderful coming to age story about Skylar, Asher and their classmates in New York Academy of Magic, their fight against evil and darkness, while learning to work and tolerate each other to succeed. A wonderful start of a new series!! Loved it!
The next generation of heroes starts a spellbinding journey of saving the world - a neverending task... Skylar finds out the saying "be careful what you wish for" applies to her, changing her approach to life and her goals. Called by darkness she is, but also scared and repelled by it - as am I. Can't wait to read the sequel !
I've read a number of academy books and series and this book one is up among the best I have read for a while. I read this in one sitting and I can't wait to continue reading the rest of the series, just as long as I don't run out of books to read before the series ends, I recommend you start reading this series! Five for five.
2.5 ⭐️ I just found it bad. I did not like the writing. Felt like I was reading on wattpad again. The story had potential but then it just lacked. The characters lacked chemistry, and the main character just did a lot of dum things withouth thinking it through. Just not for me, but I pushed through even tho I wanted to DNF it 🤷♀️
Totally worth reading. Following the lives of the young mages as they struggle to control the opponent's of the academy . Great storyline , brilliant introduction to a new series. Totally recommended.
This is the first book I have read by this author, but it won't be the last. The storyline was well done as well as the world building and characters. This was a good start to a series and I am looking forward to reading the next book.
Loved the book can't wait for the next but had to go back and read Mages of New York series and loved it too. Great characters, lots of action and good stories.
