Labas, aš – Klodas! Esu šaunus šuo. Turiu beretę ir geriausią draugą Pūkuotą Kojinę. Labiau už šviežius kaulus mėgstu tik nuotykius. Šiandien vyksim į kaimą. Ten tikrai rasim ir nuotykių, ir gardumynų. Keliaukim drauge!
Alex T. Smith is the creator of the much-loved and bestselling Claude fiction series for early readers. He was the official World Book Day illustrator in 2014, and other recent accolades include the UKLA Picture Book Award for Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion and the Children’s Book of the World Illustration Award for illustrating Dodie Smith’s The Hundred and One Dalmatians. When not working, Alex enjoys doodling in his sketchbook, reading, people-watching, and eavesdropping. He lives under the watchful eye of his small canine companions, who are a constant source of inspiration to him.
I think the Claude series is rapidly turning into one of my top recommendations, regardless of the context. "You like chocolate? Great, read some Claude." "The weather *is* nice today isn't it. Read some Claude." "You want me to sign for that parcel? Only after you read some Claude."
This series by Alex T Smith is adorable, and it's going from strength to strength. Just in case you don't know what the premise is, the eponymous Claude is a dog full of je ne sais quoi. Him and his best friend - Sir Bobblysock, a stripey sock - get into all sorts of adventures. Previous titles have seen them visit the circus, the beach, the city and now they're in the countryside.
Drawn and coloured in a limited palette of reds, blacks, and whites, this book is glorious. The distinctive colouring shifts, quite brilliantly, to reflect the situation Claude is in at the moment. It's one of those books that you read very much on a visual level as well. There's a spread, for example, where a bull goes on a rampage and suddenly the page behind it is coloured in deep angry red. Then Claude lassoos it (amazing) and suddenly we have white space creeping back onto the page in the form of mimicking those 'speed lines' you always used to draw to indicate something going fast. It's very subtle and very cleverly done.
I also love Smith's drawing style. The central protagonist in this one, Mrs Cowpat (ha!), the farmer, is beautiful. She's reminiscent of those old pictures of land girls, with her dungarees on and a little red scarf in her hair. There's a lot of this sort of contextual quality throughout, giving the entire book the feel of being something both old-fashioned and gloriously modern at the same time.
And how can you not fall in love with a book that sees Claude being bored enough to do a concert for all his other friends? His other friends: Dr Chewed Squeakybone, Dame Nibbled-Slippers, Mr Smelly Sock and a toy rabbit named ... Keith.
This was fun. I can't help but think it's one of those "children's" books with humor that will appeal more to adult readers (I, personally, couldn't help but think of Sir Bobblysock as the hosiery version of Niles Crane ;->) but my seven-year-old did enjoy it, too. (Well, okay, there IS a cow pie joke and usually I don't go for potty humor in books but, well, it was done in such a funny British way even I had to smile a bit.)
Daisy May Johnson has already written a very thorough review which sums up many of my own thoughts (especially as to the appealing artwork) so I will leave it at that ;-) https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
We haven't read any of the others in the series but I think I'll seek them out.
The illustrations earned the book another star, otherwise, it was just ok. Claude goes on an adventure with his best friend the Sock. It’s silly and kind of funny, the character names are quirky and clever-ish and I think it’s meant to be charming, but it just fell short. It just felt like a series of silly little happenings with very little drama or conflict. Even the main spot of trouble wasn’t terribly troubling. It was obvious by everything else that had happened to that point that the issue would be resolved by Claude’s quick thinking and all in very short order. I can imagine kids enjoying it fine, but their parents might find themselves tired of it after a reading or two. If I or a friend were looking for a story about a dog on an adventure, I would pass up Claude and head straight to Dominic.
Claude and Sir Bobblysock take a trip to the country and get to be farmers for the day rounding up sheep, lassoing bulls, and other exciting things.
Well, life is certainly never dull for these two. And Claude has the most unflappable owners ever. I think the bathing pigs part of this story was my favorite part. I also like that at the end of all the Claude adventures he's invited to join some group but declines to go back to his "humdrum" life.
Notes on content: Some bathroom humor in this as the farmer they work with is Farmer Cowpat.
My class and I love Claude and Sir Bobbly Socks. This is the SEVENTH Claude book we've read this year. This is also my least favourite so far. It still has the charm of the other books, with Claude going on an adventure, finding stuff under his beret, Sir Bobbly sock having one of his funny moments and Claude saving the day. The children love that it always begins and ends in the same way, even the weakest of readers are able to join in.
This is another great addition to the Claude series. These books all make me chuckle and Claude and Sir Bobblysock's adventure to the country is no exception. Claude finds his way to a farm and ends up helping a farmer get ready for the County Fair. There are so many comedic moments as Claude works with the different animals. This is a delightful series for new readers. Pleasant illustrations. Brief text. Funny story. Early chapter book perfection.
I have to say, I didn’t expect to thoroughly enjoy this book at 22 but wow was I grinning the whole time I read it. Easy to read, with not many words on each page, but the illustrations and the writing were hilarious. I even loved Bobblysock and his chocolate eclair. Would definitely recommend to younger kids starting to read on their own and love adventures with dogs
Man patika!
Amusing chapter book tale about a little dog, Claude, and a bobbly sock. They go on an adventure to the countryside and end up on a farm the day of the country fair. There’s lots of excitement and getting animals ready for the shows.
Kaarle-koiralle ja Lordi Nukkasukalle sattuu ja tapahtuu, minne ikinä he menevätkin! Tässä tarinassa Kaarle vie Lordi Nukkasukan maaseudulle, missä he päätyvät auttamaan paikallista emäntää markkinoiden järjestämisen kanssa.
7/1/22: Another installment, this time with cow patties, pumpkins in specific places (rather than balls), angry bulls, pigs, and chickens. I think this might have to be the end of my reading of this chapter book series. They've all just been 3 stars for me. Interesting, but not spectacular.
This Claude book was pretty cute. It was by far the funniest so far, especially the part about the bull chasing the snooty judge. Give this one to kids that like to have a good, hearty laugh!
The illustrations and the whimsical flair of this series is what charms, but this book hits one note rather than providing a bouquet of flavors. Still, young Francophiles may be charmed by its style.
There's just something about that Claude. In this, the sixth title featuring the adventure-minded Claude, an adorable black and white dog, and his more reserved friend, Sir Bobblysock, the two set off for a day in the country. As was the case in the previous books, wherever these two go, trouble and lots of fun are sure to follow. Mrs. Cowpat, a friendly farmer, enlists their help in herding the sheep, gathering eggs, and cleaning the pigs in preparation for the fair. True to his enterprising and courageous nature, Claude even saves a snooty judge from a disastrous encounter with a raging bull. When the two friends return to the safety of their home with Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes, they bring with them some of the odors of the farmyard as well as the lasso that Claude used in his heroic antics. The story line and digital artwork are appealing for young readers for many reasons: the droll humor, the reference to cow patties, and the thought of what an animal and his friend might get into while the humans are away. Although Claude just about always saves the day in the books, they are his adventures and fantasies, after all. One of the things I find so terrific is the fact that readers only see the Shineyshoes from the waist down and that they are known by their footwear, which makes sense since that's what Claude would see. I also love how different the two friends are. Even the grumpiest person will smile when reading these. And don't we all need something that puts us in a great mood? Write and draw on, Mr. Smith!
Claude in the country by Alex T. Smith is a great read for independent readers. The fourth installment in the series can be enjoyed by itself or as part of the series. Claude and Sir Bobblysock decide to visit the Countryside and come across Woollybottom farms where they meet Mrs. Cowpat. Claude and Sir Bobblysock help Mrs. Cowpat get ready for the county fair. Hilarity ensues as Claude helps Mrs. Cowpat gather eggs, becomes a sheep dog, rides a horse and even saves a snotty judge from an angry bull. Filled with illustrations that are black, white and red it’s quirky and fun. Great for readers of picture books and new beginner chapter books. Smith does an excellent job of keeping the humor light hearted and appropriate for young audiences.
‘Claude in the Country’ is a book of the series ‘Claude’, but it can be read as a standalone. The book features the adventure of Claude, a small dog, and his best friend Sir Bobblysock in the countryside. Written in simple yet catchy language, this beautifully illustrated story is an excellent pick for young readers.
The book can familiarize one with what life is like in the country. Besides, it is also capable of encouraging young minds to develop the habit of helping others in need. The lessons are pretty easy to derive in this easy-to-follow story.
This book is as silly and whimsical as you'd expect from a story about a dog and his best friend, a sock named Sir Bobblysock. In this installment Claude goes to Woollybottom farm and helps the farmer, Mrs. Cowpat. The story is light and simple and will be great for kids just starting to read chapter books. The ample pictures in shades of grey and red add a lot of humor to the story and complement the text perfectly.
Claude in the country by Alex T. Smith is a animal adventure story. The problem is the score guy at the fair gets chased by a big bull! Will claude be brave and help the score guy? Claude is brave because he goes to the country. People who like animal and dog stories should read this book. Claude' "sir bobbly sock" and the farmer are the main characters. (claude is a hero in the series)
Loved this clever rendition of a chapter book with attractive characters and interesting, playful scenarios. The vocabulary is rich and the pictures are delightful. Cannot wait to read the rest in this series!
