Lin Rufei was the youngest son of the head of the Kunlun Sect.
The disciples of Kunlun had been the sharpest among those in Jianghu, and were revered as legends among men.
But Lin Rufei had a problem. If he so much as tripped, he would need to lay in bed for three days.
As Lin Rufei thought about whether he could salvage something from his ill health or not, he realized that a mysterious … phenomenon had happened to his body.
The beginning was so random. I have no idea why literal monkeys were needed in this story but feel free to spoil this for me if you've read it. Also, it was confusing who the ML was. If it's Gu Xuandu then they aren't introduced until ch 14.
Liked the sibling dynamics though and Lin Rufei our sickly MC. But honestly I'm so bored, and don't have any motivation to continue.
At this moment, Lin Rufei thought this was their first encounter.
But he did not know that this was a reunion after hundreds of years apart.
This is a wonderful novel! I love the concept of reincarnation with fated lovers. Those things together really brought melancholy and warmth at the same time. The plot itself also has some mystery and the journey of the MC and ML to different places reminded me so much of the anime Kino no Tabi. I will definitely recommend this to literally everyone!
Thanks to Satsuki at Half Moon Translations for the English translation of this danmei web novel.
寒剑栖桃花 by Xi Zixu 西子绪 was published as a webnovel in 2019 on jjwxc (Jinjiang Literature City). The English title is a bit of a misnomer because 桃花 actually refers to peach blossoms, not cherry blossoms. The online translator has acknowledged this, but kept the reference to cherry blossoms throughout the translated text. It does have some implications as the peach blossom tree and spirit play a central part of the story not to mention the poetic centering of peach blossoms in classic Chinese paintings and poems.
Moving past that, I found reading this novel to be fairly relaxing but conversely low stakes. Although the sickly MC Lin Rufei of Kunlun sect has no swordfighting skills or qi, he is doted on and well-protected by his brothers, his sixth level cultivation maids and the mysterious peace blossom spirit Gu Xuandu. His descent down the mountain accompanied by the two maids and Xuandu to distribute invitations to the next swordfighting competition at Kunlun gives the pretext to set up an episodic wuxia adventure story. It reminds me of Nan Chan where each encounter leads to an overarching buildup of the mystery of the identities of both the MC and ML. I usually am fond of sickly protagonists who can't fight but there was a lot of Rufei getting blown by the wind, Rufei sick, Rufei sleeps, has no appetite, has to be cajoled to drink his medicine, rinse and repeat. His invisible 'backer' Gu Xuandu is so overpowered that there is no possibility of Rufei being in danger. Even when Rufei encounters a supposedly dangerous situation involving a demon egg and an enraged demon parent, it dissolves into cutesy.
The monk was pretty interesting but I'm not sure if I liked the forceful pursuit by the prince.
At the end of the day, the revelations weren't that mind-blowing. However, if I had known it was a master-disciple romance from the start, I would likely have stayed away. Similarly, I also tend to avoid plot lines that involve having to wait for an amnesiac 'reincarnation' to grow up so they can be together again eg like in Hua Qian Gu.
I do appreciate the thought that the author put into naming his characters with wit like Qi Yansheng (tired of winning), Mo Zhaocai (don't invite prosperity), Lin Rugong (bow) and even Rufei (jade).
Lol my problem is that I've read enough danmei for me to feel like the storytelling is predictable or that I have already read some variant of this before. Every scene in their quest I wld be like ahhh this is an Allusion To The Past and inevitably it was, and the story itself didn't have enough compelling points to it to make it stand out tho.
My favourite parts are prob the chi Yu content

I am a person who tries their best to not drop books so unless the book has upsetting themes that go directly against my moral values, I won’t just drop it so easily. Maybe that’s why I was able to finish this lmao
It wasn’t bad per se it’s just... not the greatest. The prose was well written (kudos to translator!) and I could easily imagine everything that the author wanted to say, yet I guess this book just wasn’t the one for me haha. I didn’t really feel the chemistry between the main CP and I am so sorry but dude what kind of dynamic-
[spoiler]
It’s like Hua Cheng and Xie Lian but Xie Lian was Hua Cheng’s adoptive father/shizun who then became his lover when he (HC) became 20.
...you see what I’m getting at?
*sighs*

Maybe this would have been better if there was more character growth? Or idk more plot? It’s a light read and pretty bingeable due to the story arcs being only 10-15 chapters long. I would have liked to explore more of the past and maybe have a little more substance. It was kinda slow and not everyone has the patience for a slowburn. I really love slowburns but this was a bit too slow even for me.
Up until near the end, I was convinced this would be a five star read - 4.75, at least. But then, that final chapter ended. And it so ruined the whole novel for me. I should start by pointing out all I loved about this tale, but it's easier to start with the bad and leave it out of the way, before moving on to the good. That final chapter was appaling. It was rushed, it was contrived, it was expositional, lacked all sorts of emotional investment, felt like a summary of the points the author wished to address throughout several more chapters. It read like a plot outline - and not a very detailed one, at that. It left so many loose ends hanging, so many little tales unfinished, so much that begged for further visitation. And I felt robbed of Gu Xuandu and Lin Rufei's growing relationship during the time they spent travelling. I felt robbed of that heart-swooning, breath-taking sensation of having them fall deeper in love before my eyes, pining for each other all along, until none could resist anymore. In fact, the entire novel lacked the level of angst I tend to be rather particular to, but I never felt it suffered for it - until that last chapter. It did not give the closure I was hoping to get. Still. I loved the characters - every single one, from Lin Rufei's overwhelming family to his girls' servants, the side characters at every episode of his 'invitation delivery journey', Lin Rufei himself, Gu Xuandu, Wu Ao, even the 'soulless' Mo ChanShan, I really loved the characters. And all those side stories, as they served not just to further entertain and interest me as a reader, but to help Lin Rufei grow and mature, after a lifetime being coddled and kept ignorant of the world and life by his siblings. I loved how his views of the world changed from one event to the next, in the face of what he observed on other people and what he learned of them. I loved the face down and revelations scene, the tales of Wu Ao and Gu Xuandu's past, the truth about the Heavenly Ruler, I loved all that. But. I wish the writing had been less expositional and more emotional, I wish there'd been a little less telling and a lot more showing, I wish there was angst. And that's why this one isn't getting a 5 star, though I really loved the way the two protagonists stepped out of the usual mould of danmei novels, though Lin Rufei's lack of health might have hinted at that...
Umm it was kind of strange how many thematic and situational similarities it had with TGCF while also being so starkly inferior. It was also just so repetitive I can’t really remember a whole lot of what happened. The little side quests were so similar in structure that the story essentially felt like like walking through one of those new neighborhoods where the houses are the same/mirror images of each other? Like “ah I’ve started down this street, Oh look a house…another house…another hou—WAIT WHY IS IT THE SAME HOUSE?”
So yes, I did not like it very much. Unlike with houses, if there’s no dimension to a story, what’s the point in becoming involved? Also, following chronically sick/weak/feverish characters is like treading oobleck: Tedious and unfulfilling.
I’m gonna have to pursue horror again, ‘cause Xianxia/Xuanhuan is letting me down and I’m bored.
This was such an interesting story - with many mystery arcs and an overlying mystery (that is a bit obvious but still sweet). The novel is also written where the ending extra gives a different perspective on the beginning, which is such a beautiful idea.
I love the various side characters and side relationships in this story. Also, the author notes were so cute - the small theatre is full of funny little cartoon-like imaginings.
The characters are vivid and relatively sympathetic. I guess if there's a theme in this story, it's love and how hard it is to grasp sometimes. And how it thrive there there's respect for each other's decisions. How everything has a cost, great good means sacrifice by someone.
This is the second book I've read by Xi Zixu, and after Kaleidoscope of Death, I should've known how long and compelling her books would be. Two nights and three days, that is how long I have stayed up glued to my kindle, and it feels completely justifiable. I'm pretty sure I skipped meals as well, but what can I do!! The story was so good, and the mystery kept on giving, which I certainly appreciate. Plus the characters were just perfect aaahhhH!!
Slow and sweet romance between the ML and the MC. It’s more like reading a “Journey to the West” kind of story. Quite relaxing, and can be read at your own pace. I didn’t feel rushed to reach the end and could slowly imagine each scene. A perfect read for an after angst novel.
“At this moment, Lin Rufei thought that this was their first encounter.
But he did not know that this was a reunion after hundreds of years apart” — Chapter 99
One thing that really annoys me is that they're not Cherry blossoms but Peach blossoms!!! I can't and shouldn't complain about translations, as I would and could never do a better job, but, it just triggers me so much!
桃花 = Peach Blossom 樱花 = Cherry Blossom
The wonderful translator explained multiple times that they translated Peach blossom as Cherry blossom to fit the title but I just can't—(T⌓T)
Anyways—
This is as slow paced as a snail, it is about Lin Rufei travelling along the road whilst delivering invitations and solving people's problems along the way.
This novel make me feel great empathy and compassion to the side characters although they didn't have much screentime, I found that they all had their own unique characteristics, but the author clearly preferred some side characters more over the others, as some got more screentime and some, a little less.
I don't like how Lin Rufei was oblivious to what was going on till about chapter 70ish, he knew about other people's problems, but clearly not his own. Most of the novel was just Lin Rufei misunderstanding himself over and over again, which I quickly got annoyed by.
I actually(ironically) felt more for the side characters than the main, if you get what I mean. I get that their backstory(which dates hundreds of years back) was tragic and ended in complete catastrophe, but sadly, it just didn't evoke any strong emotions within me.
The author could of made the backstory longer, as in, make Lin Rufei have some small flashbacks, a little at a time(maybe in his dreams or something) and not just remember everything all at once. The backstory only lasted for like 1-2 chapters(?) so maybe that's why I didn't really feel anything, but then again, I don't have the right to lecture the author as this is only my opinion so he/she should feel free to write whatever he/she likes and think is best.

This is a very good story. A masterpiece. With a touch of melancholy and mystery. And such a sweet love, overcoming so much.. all of this is just fascinating. I’m in love with this book.
The pacing is quite slow. The beginning was even a bit too slow, but than it’s became much better.
The plot is quite good. You can feel just how much work author put in it. There is many unexpected events, the same as a nice mysteries. And some very touching angst as a good addition.
I’m really fascinated with all of this. I had many guesses how the story will go, but it was every time an unexpected twist. I really like it. This books has its own atmosphere that is very sweet and entangling.
The ending was also very nice. Sad that there is no extra about Wu Ao, and our main couple living a good life they deserve.
I will definitely read this book again when I’ll be in melancholy mood. This is book is like a healing to the soul. Tender, sweet but at the same time very down-to-earth and melancholy. It’s like a good wine, need to be taster slowly and left you with the slight drowsiness.
It's been a while since I last read a wuxia/xianxia novel, so I picked up Cherry Blossoms Upon a Wintry Sword and I'm glad I did as it was an enjoyable read.
The story follows the MC, Lin Rufei, who is the 4th son of a prominent cultivation family. Unfortunately, LRF was born with a weak body, and his older siblings all have spoiled him and kept him hidden away from public view his whole life. He meets someone called Gu Xuandu, who no one else can see, through a cherry blossom flower falling on his face, and the two of them embark on a journey through the jianghu to extend invitations to the sword competition hosted by the Lin family.
Through his journey, LRF learns a lot about the world and slowly uncovers the truth of the Heavenly Ruler, a mystical being who set down a formation hundreds of years ago protecting the human areas from being attacked by demons, with GXD by his side.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
Each story arc follows LRF as he travels to a different family and helps with whatever issue they're facing. For example, the first family he visits is the Meng family, whose youngest son Meng Lanruo died as a child and they hired a witch to bring his soul back to life in a created body so that he can live a carefree life. There's also the Liu family, whose second son is so attached to the way of the sword that he's determined to marry his sword.
Each family has their own quirks, but my favorite is a toss up between the boisterous He family, who fights so much between themselves that their houses are made of wood so that they can quickly build them again if it collapses because of the fights, and the She family, whose eldest son is in a relationship with a jiao and pretends to be heavily injured to attract the jiao's attention.
The relationship between GXD and LRF was sweet. GXD is so protective and possessive of LRF at the same time and won't let anyone hurt him. I love how GXD isn't in a rush to confess his feelings but is content to let things slowly progress and, in his words, to let the frog keep simmering in the increasingly boiling water for a while longer XP I only wish we got some more flashbacks to the past to see how their teacher-disciple relationship developed.
The reason I gave it 3 stars was because the plot wasn't very deep. We're mostly following LRF around from family to family, and the overarching storyline about retrieving GXD's lost body parts and investigating the identity of the Heavenly Ruler wasn't that exciting. I prefer complicated storylines with the occasional twist, so this novel fell flat for me in that regard.
However, I still enjoyed it, as the story was much comedic than I was expecting, with it often coming at the most unexpected times. Here are some of my favorites:
LRF unknowingly seduced someone else's sword lol
Fu Hua was livid as she stood in front of Lin Rufei protecting him. She sternly scolded Gu Feiyu: “What are you doing! What if you hurt young master?!!!”
Gu Feiyu felt wronged to death that he almost cried out when he pointed at Lin Rufei: “It’s obvious that he seduced my sword…”
Lin Rufei looked around in confusion: “Huh?”
[...]
“I’m dead, I’m dead! Zhong Feng you heartless son of a b*tch—” Gu Feiyu sat down on his butt and hugged Zhong Feng like he was hugging his wife who had just come back from her illicit lover, “You heartless bastard—”
Lin Rufei looked helpless and he actually felt that he stole someone’s wife.
The atmosphere was frighteningly quiet in the loft and only Gu Feiyu’s crying could be heard. Lin Bianyu asked helplessly: “Is there no other way?”
Gu Feiyu wiped away his tears: “Well, there is one.”
“What method?” Lin Bianyu asked.
“I would have to trouble Lin San Gongzi.” Gu Feiyu said, “You just have to make it clear to him that you don’t love him and it’s fruitless with him—”
--------------------
GXD is so protective of LRF
The jiao’s face panicked. It tried to dive down but it was too late. The person on the water had drawn their sword and the sword fiercely swung down. The majestic sword intent went directly through the lake water, straight towards the jiao.
The jiao knew that it could not hide, so it simply did not hide. Standing in place, its mouth issued a low dragon roar and this dragon roar contained some feeling of being wrong: why is this happening again—I didn’t do anything—why do you bully this dragon like this?
The man who wielded the sword sneered: “The fish you spat out almost broke his shoulder.”
The jiao was dumbfounded.
He continued: “The bruise on his shoulder has darkened a lot. Also, the lick you gave.” As he said this, he became angry again. He gritted his teeth and swung down a second time, “If he catches a cold—”
--------------------
Liu Rugong, the guy marrying his sword, asking for LRF to fight with him as a wedding gift XP
As he was about to speak, Liu Rugong added, “I don’t want to bother Lin gongzi to prepare a gift for me. How about this, will Lin gongzi grant me a small wish as a gift for my wedding?”
Sure enough, it came. Lin Rufei asked, “What wish?”
Liu Rugong heavily pressed Luo Shen on the side of his waist and said seriously, “To compete with me with swords.”
Lin Rufei questioned, “With Luo Shen?”
Liu Rugong responded, “Naturally!”
Lin Rufei slightly hesitated, “But you just got married. Won’t it be a bit inappropriate……for me to fight with your bride………?”
Liu Rugong’s expression froze. He was choked half-dead by Lin Rufei’s words. Gu Xuandu, who hadn’t spoken at all, could not hold back his laughter next to him.
--------------------
LRF's poor servants who think he's delusional
He went to the door but heard Fu Hua lower her voice and murmuring to Yu Rui: “This medicine must be boiled more carefully. Young master’s hysteria has worsened again……he seems to have started talking to a third person.”
--------------------
The newly hatched Ye mo imprinting on LRF, much to his dad's disgust. And now the kitten won't eat without LRF around.
Reading this felt a bit like an adventurous travelogue. Each arc felt like a cohesive set of episodes where the MC helped to solve problems before moving on on his journey. Each arc the MC faced a new problem, and each arc he got to learn new things and expand his horizons. A bit of mystery here, a bit of action there - all of which made for a very pleasant reading. The conversation and character interactions were enjoyable, and the lack of drama made for a light-hearted reading. The unfortunate thing to this is that the romance between MC and ML took a backseat. What romance was there was very subtle, and although by the end when they got together it felt natural, I wished there was more 'chasing' shown. That took my rating down by half. I took of the other half because it left some minor threads unsolved. A few minor threads were never explained, and while it didn't detract from the major storyline, it made it feel incomplete, in a way. Having said that, I still loved this book a lot.
A slow, oftentimes cute and somewhat decent story with no real antagonist.
What I particularly liked about the book was the side characters. The author took the time to flesh them out and make them likeable. The side ships were lovely and I found myself rooting for them.
The book explores myriad facets of human nature and emotions. It also explores a host of relationships - friendship, loyalty, reverence, love and so on.
I have a few complains though.
-the ending was rushed. We don’t quite get a glimpse into LRF’s last journey. -the chemistry between the protagonists while cute, lacks depth. I couldn’t feel their longing. The angst didn’t hit me in the face.
It is a good novel for a quick read of a BL adventure. The characters are many considering the novel is only 92 chapters and a few extras. The MC and ML are complimentary and fit with the storyline. But, romance builds extremely slowly for such a short story. Adventure time and traveling with a friend/teacher/potential significant other is the heart of the storyline. Adorable characters are added when the road trip starts to feel monotonous. The ending is satisfying even with the predictable twists. Worth reading once.
I really enjoyed this story. It was quite beautiful to follow their adventures. But I was so shocked with the way it ended. It felt a little underdeveloped. Although this story is about their reunion, I feel like the later part could have provided more depth. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed it. The story is quite straightforward and lovely. I wish there was more!!!
For its plot, this was too long of a story for me. While I did enjoy reading about Lin Rufei's (MC) journey on delivering the invitations and his developing relationship with Gu Xuandu (ML), there wasn't much plot and character development overall. The ending was meh but I was glad when it finally ended.
It is my fault I expected so much from this book. And ended up getting disappointed . The ending was rushed and the arcs are so so. Sometimes I enjoy it, sometimes I got bored.
Rating: 4/5- Really captivating story with lovely characters.
I enjoyed the jianghu adventures the MC experienced more than the love story. It’s not as well placed as some other novels in the genre so read it more for the plot. There’s not a lot of romance so it won’t really take away from the reading experience.
Very well written overall with interesting characters and a nice solid plot. I genuinely enjoyed reading this and found it unique. MC is a solidly likeable character and really owns his decisions and views. The ML is sort of like a side character really, it’s mostly about our MC and I really enjoyed that. He was well written enough to start and carry this story to its end.
A quiet and comfortable story. It is pretty enjoyable. Together with the main character, we embarked on a journey, unravelling mysteries. It feels like a shounen-esque adventure story that comes with a slice-of-life story pace. As you read, you'll find yourself slow down and hope that this journey will lasts longer but at the same time, you can't wait to find out about the truth of the matter.
It gives me a really nice reading experience. Love the vibe. Wishing for more stories like these; warm, comfortable, slow but interesting.
