Broken Wand Academy #1

A Curse of Magic

Rate this book
Magic isn't Taken—it's Inherited.

Eighteen-year-old Meena Song wants a normal life with a normal job and normal friends. Well, that ain't happening.

An unbelievable secret is revealed in the worst possible place—a public bathroom. Yup, gross, but still not the strangest thing she'll see today.

Who gets invited to a magical academy if you have zero magical ability? Meena does. Witches are real, but most of them are a-holes. Now, she has to figure out why she was brought to this prestigious manor in the woods, filled with lies, cliques, and one incredibly hot jerk that Meena can't seem to avoid.

Broken Wand Academy is a standalone episodic series that also shares the same universe as Marisa Claire's Academy of Shifters series. There's more to this world than you can possibly imagine. Watch for a future crossover series!

This was a fast read but oh so fun!
Meena finds out she's a witch and gets magically transported to a college for magical people. She doesn't have the greatest start but she quickly finds out how powerful she is!
She also stumbles onto something nefarious going on on the campus and I can't wait to read the next installment to see where the story goes!

The fast-paced story grips you and doesn't let go.

One moment, Meena was serving Café in a diner and in the next one she stands in a office at a magic academy. There, she finds out that her deceased grandma was a witch and now Meena has inherited her magic. Meena has a hard time believing but then an accident with a bathing tube exposes her magical abilities and the cruelty of her peers. The questions is, will Meena fight for her place at the academy since now she has finally found again a purpose in life?
Meena is intelligent and very reasonable. She doesn't make her decisions lightly and she looks behind the obvious. I like especially that she doesn't judge a person right ahead. She finds Braden at a bad moment in his life but she understands and tries to be fair. Braden is sexy and obviously powerful. He just lost a friend and so reluctantly builds a team with Meena to solve the murder of his friend.
The writing style is fluidly with a strong phrase which makes it easy to imagine the world. Every character is very well elaborated, the connection is easy to make. Alas, it is just an episode and so very short. Since I bought it in a bundle with two other firsts, it was okay. I might wait a bit to see where the story goes but I really want to finish this story.

**I reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book**

I'm not sure if I want to read the next book!?!? The last chapter was the most entertaining part of the entire novella and I really enjoyed it, but all the boring bits has me wondering if it's worth continuing

A wonderful too short magical story. Poor Meena’s magic isn’t really so strong. Then she gets invited to a Magical Academy. Don’t miss out. I received a free ARC at no cost and reviewed because I enjoyed it.

Summary:
All Meena wanted was to continue her life with her friends until she met a very strange man while at work. He strange clothing and manners didn’t fit into someone from her small town. Upon learning she would be going to a local college he offered her a place at a school for magic. Now most people would have laughed at him. Meena didn’t believe him, but she remembered all the inexplicable things her Grandmother showed her. You would never think a trip to the bathroom would be life changing, but for Meena the doorway opened into an office that could change her life forever. Meena’s entrance into the world of magic was filled with humor, bullying, wonder, friendship, and maybe just maybe romance.
Things at Broken Wand Academy are not for the feint of heart leaving Meena to wonder if it isn’t worth the effort until she gets her first taste of magic and now she will fight for her place. Between learning new things, friends, and enemies, Meena and her friends have their hands full. This was a fast paced and riveting start to a new series. The audio-book brought the characters to life for the listeners enjoyment.

Thank you Torment Publishing for a copy of this Audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Overall, A Curse of Magic by Marisa Claire was a decent read. If you are looking for a quick read full of magic, this is definitely the book for you. It definitely fills that magic want without having to devote yourself to a long book full of information. As a novella, the book does exactly what it sets out to do but I just wish there was a little more. Since everything is now established, the rest of the books will probably be more action filled but I’m in no rush to pick them up. While I really did like Meena’s character, the cast felt generic and didn’t bring any defining features. Each one fulfills their purpose but nothing more than that. Again, if you’re looking for a short book that gets straight to the point, this is the book for you and I’d definitely recommend it.

AUDIO REVIEW
NOTE: The narration does not affect my rating of the book
I really enjoyed the audio. It was easy to follow along and really brought Meena’s story to life. Chaleeya Yeh definitely does an amazing job giving each character a distinctive voice. If you like audios and want to listen to something quick while doing chores – you should consider this!

Meena Song is a recent high school graduate, exploring her college options and working at a restaurant. She recently lost her beloved grandmother and is still mourning. A mysterious man at the restaurant tells her she can attend his unique college, all expenses paid. Though skeptical, she talks to the man, and then excuses herself to replace the toilet paper in the rest room. There she finds herself transported to another place and passes out. Broken Wand Academy is a school for witches. Most students knew of their magical heritage. Meena knew her grandmother dabbled, but she never took it seriously. Now she learns that magic is real and she inherited her grandmother’s abilities upon her death. Wow! We learn, along with Meena just what that means! Broken Wand Academy is a dangerous place with secret factions, mean girls and wonderful new friends for Meena. The twists and turns were exciting and sometimes scary, but a very enjoyable read.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Book review of broken Wand Academy: Episode ms 1-4: Wands and Witches by Jenetta Penner, David R. Bernstein and Marisa Claire

Episode 1: A Curse of Magic

Meena Song had no idea she was anything but a "normal" person who had recently lost her Grandmother. Having just graduated from High School she was preparing to start Community College while living at home with her dad.

Plans change when a strange man pops up in the Diner she works at and tells her she is going to Magic College.

Things go FAST FORWARD after that. She gets a roommate, has her Magical awakening, takes a trip in a tub full of water, finds out she is powerful and almost dies. Not bad for 2-3 days st College.

This book was crazy from start to finish but I’m SO excited to read episode 2 already! No spoilers, I swear.

The plot - okay so Meena (our FMC) is a regular girl serving food in a cafe and about to go to community college. Lost without purpose. Then suddenly she’s in a new world at Broken Wand Academy learning about the world of magic. This is a short book, veeeeery easy to read, took me less than half an hour and it was great! It’s a cliffhanger, as there are several books after this that continue this story. It’s definitely worth having a read of it if you liked Zodiac Academy, or Harry Potter.

The characters - I found I loved all of the characters in this story. Our FMC Meena is a realistic portrayal of an 18 year old girl who is thrown into a whole new world. The side characters are all fleshed out with their own personalities and quirks. Very well done for such a short novel.

I love reading the different twists and turns authors weave into these academy tales. Sometimes the MC is aware of the academy’s purpose, and many times not. This is one of the latter. Now, many readers don’t really care for similar points such as these, but I actually enjoy seeing an author’s ingenuity bloom. Book one has definitely been well thought out, leaving crumbs here and there about possible avenues this tales may take. The characters are developed, yet there is always more that needs to be discovered, whether it’s from the past or just present growth. And yes, to ensure a following, if written carefully, the ending leaves you searching for book 2. Off to load it in lol. All my reviews are always voluntarily written.

What should have been one book cut up into bite size pieces.

While the premise sounded interesting, I hate when stories just cut off part way through a scene - not even in cliffhanger style - and you’re just left hanging. This would probably be a more engaging read if you get the complete series version so you can just power through.

On top of that, I didn’t really like any of the characters that much, or at least, I didn’t find them as engaging as I’d hoped. So whether or not the story is good doesn’t matter if I don’t care about the characters. I just don’t think I’m the target audience for this series.

Broken wand academy is short ,fun read. At first I don't understand what's happening but later part where meena spend her life at academy is quite amazing. I was really invested in about finding out the relation between her grandmother and school, about her magic powers.
Overall, I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to read a short fantasy.
Its good for book reading challenge . It has great pacing, so you never feel like the story is moving too fast or dragging along. The characters are great, and the story is just marvelous.

✅ easy to read
✅ fast pacing
✅ amazing characters
✅ never boring

This was a short, but decent story. I only say decent because it's really introductory.
It starts with Meena's introduction, and the introduction to the Broken Wand Academy, the colleagues, and when the action starts, puff... the book ends. I really enjoyed meeting Meena, and the plot has a lot of mistery that I'm expectant to see unraveled.

Also I'm really curious how this line will join with the Academy of Shifters series (yeah, I've already listened to Teacher's Pet, so...)

Waiting for the next one ^^

Regarding the narration, it was a bit monotone, but I got used to it, and it went smoothly until the end.

I received a free audio copy for a honest review.

Too much head talk

The book was OK, but way too much inner monologue for my liking.
180 pages with 150 pages of inner speech. We literally had one whole book for two days in the main character’s life.
The story is good so far, and I’ll continue with the next book, but hopefully we get more action, time elapsing, and details. And less of the inner thoughts of one person. Not to mention, the wording seems too proper for an 18 year old girl. Way too structured, not natural language at all.
But not bad so far.

Shorter than anticipated.

It felt like both rushing and getting nowhere at the same time; too many different points all leading in a predictable direction. As much as I love a good magical origin story (and I'll probably finish the series for the sake of it) I doubt its going to reign in anyone's mind as a potential favorite. Enjoyable for the pages it had, but meandering and seemingly pointless nonetheless.

Broken Wand

Just wow. This is a fun quick read and listen that I really enjoyed. What do you do when you find out that magic is real? Well you find yourself enrolled in a spell school of course! But you still don't believe it, because it can't be real right?!
I had a great time listening and reading this book. I can't wait to see what happens next

A magical adventure all wrapped up in one box set, best way to read a series if you get the chance since all books are right there. Poor Meena finds out that she is a witch and quickly finds out just how powerful she is all while dealing with nefarious situations popping up left and right.

This starts as a cute little story that blooms some darkness in the end,
I enjoyed the related school cliques including the mean girls; things don't change when you have magic.
This wet my taste for the rest of the safe.
The narration wasn't the best. When she did character voices, she was great but basic narration sounded like the automated machine they use to create voice content.

I received an audio version for review; all opinions are my own

An okay start

I wasn't fully invested in this story at the beginning. I didn't buy the sudden way Meena left her old life and stepped into her new one. What about her father and so called best friends? Nothing about her old life was finished for me or settled.

But thankfully her new life started off being exciting. I was entertained by the storyline. Want to know more about the Wands and about her grandmother. I recommend this to anyone looking for a good short fantasy take-me-away-for-a-few-hours trip.

Short stories sold as regular books

I hate when authors do this kind of thing.
The story was cut , just like that, no sense at all...
I think it was a forced cliffhanger.
I will NOT buy other books 2 or 3.

Awaken the excitement

I've never tried a episode story before but I am glad I did. Set in the new genre of academy, in this case an academy for witches, we have a new world to explore. The story starts in a diner where we meet the main character, Meena who is talking to her two friends about starting community college the next week and continuing to work at the diner. They head out to the end of summer parties and she makes a round with the coffee pot. She sees a man sitting in the back that she didn't remember seeing come in but dutifully goes to offer coffee and a menu. He engages her in a conversation about the future calling her by name and mentioning he could get her into the most prestigious school... At no charge... For witches. She heads back to the front expecting he's just crazy, but then a request to refill the toilet paper in the bathroom ends up transporting her to said man's admission office at said school. The broken wand academy for witches and warlocks.. This story takes you on a journey, good descriptions of the campus and people Meena meets let's you be part of her world. We meet her quirky roommate Leia and her friend Oliver. Also the soon to be study buddy after the choosing, Braden, a handsome yet arrogant 2nd year who was the first to help her when her awakening powers transport her naked in her bathtub unintentionally into the middle of the cafeteria. This episode was filled with adventure, mystery and comedy. I'm excited to see what happens next.

Wow! Next episode please!!! Once I started this book, I had to read straight through because I couldn't put it down. I laughed out loud so many times, I went back to reread those parts! Meena, the most unlikely character to be a witch actually finds witches are real and she really is one! She is talking to her friends in the restaurant she waitresses when a very strange man tell her she needs to replace of all things the toilet paper in the bathroom. And so the adventure begins where she is taken into a paranormal universe and given a scholarship to Broke Wand Academy. Curious and angry she wants to leave and go back to her normal life. But she meets up with a roommate she really does like and her friend Oliver and begins to learn a few things about witchery and the academy and some of the students there including a bully witch click. Hit with some embarrassing moments and having to work with and get to know a self-serving hunky witch with a reputation, especially since his roommate was just murdered in the woods, she decides to stay and is curious about the murder as well as other aspects of this strange academy and her growing magic, although she can't control it yet. I love this and can't wait to read the next episode! I received and ARC from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
