I’ve been interested in Australias engagement on the western front of WW1 for over 30yrs, and after many works and much time spent on the events, I was very fortunate in being able to visit them over three days mid this year. Hence I read this post my time there.

The author runs a tour company that specializes in Australian conflicts, in fact I ran into one of his tours at the Menin Gate one of the nights I attended the service, and hence as a qualified historian and a professional in the area, he has immense insight into the events that occurred.

This work then, details some of the background to the events, there occurrence and a little of post the battles. If you were picking up this topic for the first time however, it is a tad sparse, but nothing can be all things to all readers.

Of interest to those with their own transportation and an open timeline, the detailed maps of each encounter could be invaluable, given they are there at the right time of the year and do not mind walking across and through farmers fields.

For those on an organized tour, it could prove useful background, but I imagine your guide will cover it.

For me, having read as I have and having taken a local private driver and guide as I did, well it was ok and in a way it helped with some of the rapid and random emotions I left the locations and frills visited with.

Lest we forget
