It’s been two months since the Day of Enlightenment, the day a true Pentamancer emerged once more on the world stage after centuries of extinction.
Under the protective arm of the Magistrate, Aspen has agreed to cooperate with the Inner Circle in hopes that her radical visions for the Elementalist community can be realized. On the surface, things are going well: she’s been traveling the world, rescuing cities from Terramantic temper tantrums, attending Elementalist conferences, and meeting powerful Asterian Officials around the globe.
And yet, in spite of (or perhaps, because of) Aspen’s tenuous alliance with the Magistrate, political divisions are simmering among his Prelates. Not everyone shares Aspen’s Utopian vision, and the Magistrate’s grip on the Inner Circle is beginning to slip. Whether by destiny or by chance, the fate of the Community now rests on the shoulders of the so-called “Prophet”; it’s up to Aspen to decide whether to embrace her newfound status, or refuse it.
Whatever path she chooses – there’s no turning back.

5 bright stars for a destiny that's a matter of choice
I don't remember the last time I set all my plans aside to read one full series, one book after another, from cover to cover. I know I did that for Harry Potter Collection as well as for The Twilight Saga, but nothing afterwards caught my attention quite the same way. Until this series here. I flew through the pages from book 1 to book 3, practically spellbound. And I wish there was more!!!
'From the time of your first gasping breath, your destiny was never up to you. Not because destiny is written in stone, but because great people are destined to do great things.'
Aspen has now been taken under the protective arm of the Magistrate and has reluctantly agreed to cooperate with the Inner Circle hoping to realize her radical visions for the Elementalist community. Everything seems well: she’s been traveling the world, rescuing cities from Terramantic temper tantrums, attending Elementalist conferences, and meeting powerful Asterian Officials around the globe. But political divisions are simmering among the Magistrate's Prelates and not everyone shares Aspen’s Utopian vision. The Magistrate’s grip on the Inner Circle is beginning to slip and Aspen finds herself thrust head first into a battle for survival, on the outcome of which rests the fate of the entire Asterian Community and much more.
Everyone tells Aspen she is the One who is supposed to fix all that's gone wrong. She is the the so-called “Prophet”, revered, admired and feared. 'You have to do what you were meant to do Rowan. If anyone can fix this broken world, you can. I can't shield you from your destiny anymore.'
Of course Aspen resents it! 'Kismet, destiny, purpose... What ever happened to free will?' Not because she doesn't want to fight for what's right but because she's afraid. 'What if I fail?' But since fear never held our little lightning bolt back, she will grit her teeth and jump straight into the fray. selenada hashtag on instagram - Aspen's hand with lightning
The pace of this last book was much faster than that of the previous installments and every single thing was upped. Tension, action, mystery, fun, feeling and emotion, everything was somehow MORE! It was one hell of a ride!!
Aspen's growth as a character is amazing! Beautifully written and so complex, 'powerful, yet vulnerable. Dangerous and in danger.' A heady mix! And she is so wonderfully complemented by a fabulous cast of secondary characters that you cannot help but love too!
Ori - sweet and funny and endearing, the lightning geek who'd make the best friend ever! Just be careful to not gift him any thesaurus. You'll probably regret it. :D Next to Aiden, Ori is my favourite.
Eileen, Ted and Sarah, each and everyone of them is so distinct and well defined. They make a wonderful addition to the story. The interaction between them will make you tear up at times and laugh out loud at others. Because it is impossible to not get misty eyed at touching gentleness between friends; or crack up a smile as Converse snickers sail over someone's head, or hit him square for not making a fast enough exit.
We do get a bit of drama too, as well as a little competition for our Pyromancer; but Aiden is Aiden - who could stand in his way?! That man is just too good to be true!! Sweet and funny, loving and supportive, understanding and gentle... He is every girl's dream!! I just love Aiden!!
And then there was the end! Holy Frigging Shirt!! That End!! It made me tear up and smile and feel so much!! Not perfect by all means, but just right!
This book, and series by extension is a roller-coaster ride of feelings and emotions! Gripping and addictive, it will grab you by the scruff of your neck and won't let go util you've reached the end. I highly recommend it to all fantasy lovers out there.
You have got to read this people! It is so so good!

OMG! Not often that I'm speechless but this book definitely left me agog! While I try collect myself to write this review, let me first say how thrilled I am there is one more book in the series! I've grown so attached to the characters that I'm doing a happy jig in anticipation of the next book. Ok, so, my thoughts have more or less settled, and I can say with utter conviction, WOW! I loved the first 2 books in this series but this one blew the roof off! It is so well thought out, so amazingly good that my emotions were all over the place! The actual plot is has so many different angles, so many twists I honestly didn't see coming. There is not a single moment of mediocrity throughout, it kept me riveted from the start and as the story progressed, the more I was drawn in so that by the end of the book, I could finally exhale! That's how much tension and drama there was! Aspen and Aiden rock! As do all the characters, even Keres. There is nothing to not like about this entire series and especially this book! Even though I have managed to collect myself, I'm still stunned by the awesomeness of this book!
Lightning Conjurer #3: Christening by Author Rachel Rener
"Why did I never tell her so many other things? Like how beautiful she is when she sleeps. How she makes me laugh harder than anyone else I’ve ever met. How much I worry about her, every moment of every day, despite the fact that she’s the most extraordinary person I’ve ever met?"
This sentence hit hard. What's beautiful about this book is the depth and flexibility of love on show; love between family, platonic love, passionate love, the love of justice and a diverse, better world. But, underscoring it all, is a wistful love. A hope to do better, a bittersweet wish to whisper those unspoken words and the fear of missing out.
There's so much loss in this book, the best of the series so far. So much grief, and such dramatic and wide-ranging changes. But there's so much hope, too, and the balance between the two Rener achieves is astonishing.
Chapter 33, a short, perhaps 800 word passage, is a thing of feral, raw beauty that brought tears in my eyes. Aspen/Rowan/Rose is a brilliant character with such depth and empathy, but this chapter spells out her strength, her courage because letting go after realising there's nothing else you can do and living your own life is a strength not many possess.
I loved this book. Loved it. The previous books are excellent, but this is a story from an author more confident in their skill with an intimate knowledge of their characters and wonderfully built world.
This is urban fantasy at its finest. There's action, craft, deep characterisations, drama, romance and, overall, a story that sizzles.
This book follows Aspen as she works with the magistrate to reshape the Asterian Order after secrets were revealed in book 2. The ending really had me crying. Aspen goes through SOOOOO much.
I know I sound like a broken record but the science based magic system is just amazing to me. Some of the concepts (using said magic to prevent aging on a molecular level and using it to basically put your body through a magically induced dialysis to rid your body of disease and toxins) are absolutely genius and why isn't this a real thing??? Why do we not have magic like this for real???
Good job Rachel for such an amazing and clever magical system. Keep talking dirty to me 🤣😂🤣
Wow, the conclusion to this series - or near conclusion, it concludes the trilogy but there's a forth novel yet to be devoured - was absolutely stunning. Each of the novels has brought something slightly different to the table; The Awakening being the beginning of the story arc, introducing the characters and the magic system and, well, awakening Aspen to her new powers.
The Enlightening hugely expanded on the world building, the character development and the magic system whilst being fast paced, action filled and full of unexpected surprises. The Christening takes things that step further once again, bringing you into the very real politics and nitty gritty of the inner circle as you realise just how deeply the corruption has gone.
Unlike the previous novel, the pace of this starts quickly and continues to move at a full-on sprint whilst somehow never losing track of the character development and world-building. With Aspen grudgingly agreeing to stand beside the Magistrate and co-operate with the Inner Circle in the attempt to change things for good, this could easily have become bogged down by the politics and the back-stabbing. Don't get me wrong, there is certainly politics and back-stabbing, but you never find yourself bogged down in them; if anything they serve to add further depth to what is already a stunningly realised world.
And the ending... oh, the ending. I'm honestly fascinated to see where the final novel ends up, as this ties up all those loose threads perfectly in a dramatic and stunning conclusion. Obviously, there's only so much one can say without spoilers though. So, I'm looking forward to reading the final novel. And I have absolutely no idea where it is going to take me!
And thus concludes my reread of the first three Lightning Conjurer books. Aspen has to grapple with her new role as Prophet, beloved by all, while dealing with hidden corruption and secrets. This book is fantastic, and made me tear up so many times. The (temporary) conclusion to Aspen's journey was perfect. She grew so much over the series. She started as a lovely. admirable character in book 1, but she definitely had room to grow... and she does, beautifully. The rest of the characters were a joy too, of course. Their personalities and motives were clear(or subtle and complex in the best ways that have left me mulling long after putting the book down). The plot never really let up in this one. It was a non-stop ride. Even knowing what happened(since it was a reread), I HAD to keep reading to see how it all unfolded again. And the sciencey magic is still amazing. Seriously, guys. It is so well done. I loved pretty much everything but this still may be one of my favorite aspects of these stories. Looking forward to reading The Reckoning again when it comes out in a week and a half, now that the rest of the series is fresh in my mind.
What an absolutely riveting read! The ups and downs this one will put you through will have you feeling all the emotions. So much happens and I'm so in love with this world and these characters. Originally planned to be a trilogy, this one wraps up all the loose ends. I couldn't put it down. Though I was ready to throw my very pretty omnibus at the wall if a certain author put me through a Divergent ending. I'm also halfway convinced a certain author is Kaylie IYKYK. I'm excited to get to the last book, but I might wait a little to let the characters enjoy their peace.
The story is quite good and I'm definitely invested in these characters. This book I had trouble with suspension of disbelief in spots. A few places where the solution was obvious but what happened felt like it was for word count because there was no good reasons for it to go as far as it did. That sort of thing. Still a good story though.
What an incredible wrap-up of The Lightning Conjurer series! The final book did not disappoint. Really good twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat reading. I also really appreciated getting some closure at the end of the series (so refreshing). Such a good read!
The finale to The Lightning Conjurer trilogy was phenomenal! In each book, there were major twists to the story arc and shocking new revelations, and this was no different. Aspen (or Rowen or Rose, depending on when you knew her) is the most powerful elementalist in the world, pending training in both skills and politics. While she disagrees with much that the Asterian Order is doing and has stood for, she seems to have a sympathetic ear in the magistrate. But can she trust him enough to actually join the Order? And even if they are able to work together, can she cast a vision that the entire community will get behind?
Aspen also struggles with her past. Before everything came to a head, she had dreamed of becoming a neurosurgeon. She had also nearly been engaged before her memory was wiped. Now that it's all coming back, which life does she want? Things were definitely simpler when she wasn't trying to change the world. Fortunately for Aspen, she doesn't have to make all of these decisions on her own. Her mom is back in life, her boyfriend would do anything for her, and she has quite a few loyal and powerful new friends who will fight with her. And Aspen isn't the sort of woman to stand looking at the past for too long, regardless of how she might wish it. There's a world ahead of her that needs saving.
Not to spoil things, but the ending was absolutely perfect. Much was lost and much was gained. People always die in wars, but no one died in vain. There were unexpected changes in the world, while many good things remained the same. And while I cried through the last few chapters of the book, the tears were the kind that come when you have to say goodbye to characters that had started to feel like friends.
A special thanks to the author for not going Veronica Roth on us (heroes don't need to die to be good heroes) and also not writing a love triangle (is it really hard to know who you love when you have choices?). The only reason it took me so long to read this book is that you haven't finished your next series yet and I didn't want to be finished reading everything you had written. I guess I can always keep re-reading this trilogy until you write your spin-off series (hint hint nudge nudge). Like many others have said, I'm not ready to leave Aspen's world just yet. It's a truly captivating place to be, filled with wonder and wonderful things.
The third book in this trilogy is different from the others. First of all, it cannot be read as a standalone story. On the one hand, this means you need to make sure you are aware of the story so far before you start reading, but on the other, it saves introduction time. Secondly, the situation at the beginning of the book is so vastly different from the one in the other books, that a new introduction is necessary - and provided.
The latter has consequences for the pacing of the book: it builds tension at a slower pace than we have seen so far from Ms. Rener. However, there is ample room for speculation, and the climax did not disappoint. It is really hard to say anything about this book without spoilers (but I tried).
This trilogy shows how the main character comes to grips with her powers, but also how the author comes to grips with hers: her writing skills have culminated to what we see in this last installment. The characters, many of which are new, each come to life in the span of mere chapters, each having their own personalities, agendas and peculiarities. The locations have become more fantastic than ever, without losing credibility. The universe remains consistent, yet we get to explore more of it. We all know books that we put aside when we are done reading, but that linger in our minds. This is one such book.
I recommend the entire series, and I for one cannot wait until this magnificent storyteller will once again share a new creation with the world. She may be done with this trilogy, but with it, she has created high expectations. (If you don't have them, you probably haven't read any of her books yet.) Whatever her next project may be, it is on my wish list already.
It was such pleasure to read Aspen's story, her heartaches and triumphs felt so honest and I was very connected to her throughout this series. The rest of my review will remain as spoiler free as possible: I was VERY anxious about a certain phone buddy that Aspen had throughout most of the book, I felt that she has become such a different person than her life before losing her memories that I just couldn't bear the possibility! Aiden is an absolute treasure and so compassionate that his point of view really made me tear up. There is a definite (and touching) sense of finality and loss, acceptance and the path forward to move on in this final installment. A lot of authors will somehow magically save every single character and the "good guys" win knocking it out of the park- and while I won't divulge what happens to who, the injuries and losses encountered further the plot and feel rightfully done. While the author does leave the ending rather "open", I am MORE than happy with how this series has come to a close.
I highly recommend this series to anyone interested in fantasy, I was never much of a contemporary fantasy fan prior to giving Book 1 a try but Rachel has captured me on forever reading any work she puts through, regardless of the genre.
This series is one of a kind. The Lightning Conjurer: The Christening is an amazing, outstanding story. It has so many ups and downs throughout the entire story. It will pull you one way only to throw you for a loop into another way. I loved Rowan/Aspen. She was strong, feisty, caring, loving, intelligent, and a strong sense of justice. Aiden is sweet as always but strong and protective. I loved Ori and his humor. The of the support characters are amazingly developed and add so much to the story. This is extremely well written and when the descriptions are given in the story you can easily visualize them as if it was right in front of you. The story will have you laughing one minute, crying the next, only to anger you in that third minute and finally feeling all the love in it. It is gripping and one that is unable to be put down. It draws you in and doesn’t let go until you reach the end. This is a must read! The entire series is one that you won’t forget.
This entire series from the very beginning has been an Amazing one! The Indian narrative in the book makes this book a lot more cultural, the description of Indian bazaars and progression of the primary plot of the book is well aligned in every sense. I'm so glad to have read this book, and also about the fact that this will be the final installment of this book.
I think this is one of the best reads I have had all year. I loved the story of Aspen/Rowen as she comes into her powers and the elementalist community. I had an emotional time but it was well worth it.
Loved this book and entire series!! This installment gave you love, action, and best of all closure!! I am a huge fan of closure and this story explains things, ties up loose ends and gives you a good glimpse at where the characters life’s paths are going!!! A must read!! 💖💖
HOLY FREAKING COW. I'm too emotional right now to leave a proper review. Ummm... Suffice it to say: 1) this is easily the best book I've read ALL YEAR; 2) I have never been more satisfied with a trilogy ending.
WOW. Just WOW. If you haven't read this series yet, you are seriously missing out.
Subpar Summary: After living 3 years isolated in a cabin with no memories prior to waking there, Aspen finds herself unable to explain certain phenomena surrounding her, such as a tornado arriving at just the right moment to save her from being pancaked by a semi-truck. She ends up meeting Aiden, a professor at a university nearby she decided to audit, and he reveals to her a world he has only recently escaped. She finds out that he is an elementalist and that, while most only have access to 1-3 different elements, she has access to all five making her a pentamancer Urging her to keep this revelation secret so she won't be used or taken advantage of, Aspen attempts to hide her abilities but it's too late. When her grandmotherly neighbor is indirectly threatened by the Asterian Cult Order interested in her, she seeks them out and learns of their plans for her. Her recruiter, Savannah, suspects that she is a pentamancer and pushes her to reveal it by threatening Aiden's life. She and Aiden escape but part ways when she catches a lead toward her parents and he finds out where his sister has been secretly imprisoned. Aspen follows the trail and meets her godfather, Ted, who she has no recollection of but believes betrayed her parents to the order. He warns her that he cares for her but that the facility where Aiden's sister is being kept is a trap. Aspen races to warn them and, due to Aiden falling ill, arrives in time. Despite knowing their efforts may be futile, she and Aiden still attempt the rescue together but his sister has already been moved to the order HQ in DC. Deciding that is the next course of action, they make their way there along with some recruited friends (Eileen and Sophia) and a not so welcome Ted. On the way, Aspen is kidnapped as the behest of Savannah and reunited with her mother who is forced to return her memories in hopes it will allow her to access her full abilities. Her friends are caught when they arrive attempting to help her and forced to watch the procedure. When she awakens, the Magister of the order arrives and puts an end to the madness. Some time passes and Aspen (or I guess now Rowen, as she has her memories returned) is attempted to change the status quo with the help of the Magister who has played an unknown role in her life up until this point. He finally forces her into joining the order officially but the some of the others in his inner circle are furious at the turn of events and he is killed. Prior to his death he forces Rowen to witness the events by pulling her psyche into his own. Keres, his protégé was the one who pulled the trigger. Her and her accomplices planned the coup because they intend to wipe out regular humans so that the far "superior" elementalists can come out of hiding and bask in the sun instead of in secret. Rowen reveals what she saw and chases after them when they try to escape. Battling it out, along with her friends, they win the fight and Rowen sustains an injury causing her to go into a coma. They return home with her and she awakens after awhile to find most of their friends and family recovering along side her. The Order is finally changing for the better and she decides that she will pursue her original dream of research and medicine in neuroscience. Cue the HEA.
Thoughts: This series wasn't bad by any means but I did kind of get bored at certain parts. By the time I finished this book, I decided I wasn't really interested in the 4th as the story was pretty wrapped up. The characters, I think, is where this one suffered the most. Rowen was written really well but no one else got the same level of attention short of maybe the Magister who was very conflicting but interesting. The side story with Wes felt like of wasted as well. I understand her conflict with accepting this new reality vs. the life she had before but Aiden was just completely in the dark and going off what little she'd give him. I dunno... It just didn't work for me. He was great but I felt this lack of chemistry or passion.
Overall Series: 3.7/5 - Not bad, not great. Interesting world and concept.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (if I could I'd give a Galaxy of stars)
⚡️ Elemental magic
⚡️ Corrupt secret society
⚡️ Incredible plot and world building
⚡️ Explosive action and twists
⚡️ Perfect and satifying ending
You know that feeling where you want to throw a book across the room but hug it close and never let go.... or that feeling where you can't stop reading but at the same time you need to step away and scream because what you're reading is simultaneously shattering, exploding and imploding your heart, mind and soul?
Well, there were 3 moments in this book that I felt this way so excruciatingly deeply that I didn't know what to do with myself. i had to put the book down and step away but immediately came running back because i needed to keep reading. All I can advise, from my own experience, is to not pick this book up when you are at 65% just before bedtime because you will not be able to exist in the real world until you finish it.
To say that i loved this book would be a massive understatement. The plot draws you in, the characters make you fall in love, the magic makes you wish you lived inside the book (also im not 100% sure Rachel Rener isnt actually "Kaylie", seriously Rachel, you can tell me, i promise i wont tell anyone else!!), and finally the writing makes you feel everything along side the characters. This story is going to stay with me for a while because i feel like its claimed a part of my soul.
Now this book is book 3 of 4, but as this was originally a trilogy, the end was so incredibly satisfying. All the loose ends were tied, there was hope for the future and i could so comfortably set it down and feel entirely at peace with story being over there. But book 4 apparently picks up a few years after these events and honestly, i just dont want to leave these characters behind. Im not ready to move on and even though I've only known them for 3 days, i feel like they have become a part of who I am so I will absolutely be picking up book 4 immediately.
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars because it's earnt it. I will never not recommend this series in the future. This is my 4th Rachel Rener book, and I can quite comfortably say that I will eagerly read every single book she has written and every book has plans to write in the future. She will absolutely be on my list of favourite authors of 2024!!
This book started out a little slow for me, tbh, though there wasn't anything technically wrong with it. I just don't care about politics of any kind and spent the first few chapters just screaming in my mind BUT WHERE'S AIDEN??
Once she got back to him, we hit the ground running. And yes, the stuff before that is needed and excellent, I was just impatient LOL.
Every time this book is mentioned somewhere, Rachel says it's her favorite of the original trilogy, so I had high expectations because the first two were incredibly FABULOUS. And, despite my personality that yawns in the face of politics, this book ensnared me like all the rest. I don't know if I can pick a favorite, but I can say that the ending of this one is definitely my favorite!
So, what can I even say about this book without spoiling things?
I feel like everyone got the appropriate amount of time in this book, which can be difficult when you realize how many people Aspen has around her now, especially with the addition of the Inner Circle of the Asterians.
We get redemption. We get closure on a guy I can't name because spoilers–wait, two of them actually—and both were handled PERFECTLY. We get love, danger, mystery, sinister plots, and of course, lots of elemental magic! Even an epic battle that could have easily gotten out of hand, but Rachel did an admirable job of keeping track of everyone without jumping too much or spending too much time away from any one group.
The climax had both my heart and my head hurting. (I read the climax with a horrid migraine, but tbh it just heightened my empathy with Aspen... I felt almost dangerously the same as her, only making me more concerned about how she'll be able to do this when with the same pain, I could barely read the book...)
Anyway. This book wraps up VERY nicely, I ADORE it, so I suppose the fourth book is likely a full-length Epilogue of sorts, which I am thrilled about and looking forward to! No need to say goodbye to our favorite Elementalists just yet! <3
When I was a boy I saw the first Superman movie in the theater. That night I wore my purple suit. I was looking good. By the end of the night, I was a superhero. I was in my underoos gripping a towel around my neck and jumping from my bed pretending to fly Lois Lane around. As an adult, this series had me missing my underoos. Make no mistake about it, this series is about superpowers, but it is also about love. I read book one, two and three. This series has it all. It is full of mystery. Things come up that I didn't expect. I enjoyed the hero story. I loved the soul searching main character. I appreciated the drama that unfolded within her family. Also, for those that enjoy romance, there is plenty of that here. The series kept me reading, I wanted to know what was going to happen and by the end of book 3, the pay off was truly nice. I may never have true super powers but I'm excited for Rachel Rener's next release. I would love to see her books brought to television. She is a wonderful writer and she scored huge points from me for bringing everything together in a complex yet understanding way. I appreciate the science she brought along through the journey as well. I loved The Lightning Conjurer Series. If more readers would get smart, pick up book one and get hooked onto something special, maybe we will see more than 1-3! If you love magic, motorcycles and romance then I highly suggest picking up this complete series. Yeah, I fell for the protagonist but I guarantee some of you will fall for her love interest. He's dreamy, lol. She wrote the characters so well. Enjoy it but be sure to have a bucket of ice next to you, things get hot. Also, these books truly have me wanting to purchase a motorcycle. I'm already reading a copy of Motorcycles for Dummies, now I just need a bike and the girl with two names.
The Christening is the last book of the trilogy, even though I know there's a fourth book that is set four years after the final events. It's a good conclusion either way and it ties all that needs to be tied! So, Rowan/Aspen is finally outed as Pentamancer and must now deal with the consequences: I was scared that would mean she would be a puppet for an agenda she didn't care for, and I was right... in a way. That did come, but in a different way than I envisioned and from different characters than what I thought at the beginning. The twists kept coming and I stayed up until 1am to finish the story!
The Magistrate, the higher authority in the Elementalist world, surprised me, infuriated me, shocked me even: it was a complex character with lots of layers and hard goals to reach and his methods were questionable at best. Still, in his situation, I don't know what could have been done better. The one thing I really didn't like and couldn't find a reason for, is the secret he kept about Rowan's father. At the beginning, it made sense. It stopped having sense in the two months since Enlightening and Christening, when something different could be done. I'm still scratching my head over it. I was grateful that Rowan's past with Wes wasn't dragged on but just used for closure; I like drama, but that kind of drama was unnecessary. Still, Rowan needed that closure and poor Wes did too. I can't imagine the pain of a girlfriend vanishing for three years without a word, it must have been so horrible!
And so this journey in Rowan/Aspen world is over for now... I'll get to the fourth book since I have the boxed set from KU but I'm happy to let it rest a while. It was an adventurous journey, full of twists, memorable characters, love, family and sacrifice... and Professor Boyfriend was absolutely worth everything 😂
Oh, my goodness! The twists and turns in this spectacular novel had me turning those pages! The compulsion to keep reading was so strong I simply couldn't stop to stay with the timeline for the buddy read I'm doing with this series. After a certain point it was simply impossible to put the book down, and while I'm glad I savored the majority of the book, nothing in the world could have made me stop once I reached that critical moment.
Aspen has already gone through so much in this series, but this volume ratchets up the ante so much, increasing the stakes, coming with unexpected plot twists and the betrayal-oh, the betrayal! I had so many doubts about the Asterian Order, the political body created by the Elementalists, but I did not peg the right person as the problem. And my, oh, my was I surprised when the truth came out.
Not only is the plot fantastic, but the characters simply pop off the page. The entire cast is so charismatic and engaging, keeping me entertained and caring so much for these wonderful people. It's intense! And I loved every moment of it.
Add to that the wonderful message about equality and true tolerance of difference, as well as the freedom to make choices individually, that are right for each one of us (as opposed to a Magistrate or an Inner Circle of power-hungry individuals making heavy-handed decisions on behalf of and "in the best interests of" others-yeah, because that DOES NOT WORK). I love this author's works and cannot wait to find out what Aspen and her friends get up to in the next and last (sniff) novel of this fabulous series.
I can assure you, whatever you may be reading right now - you want to pick yourself up The Lightning Conjurer series. It's the series you want to read nextand it's what you are looking for. The Lightning Conjurer stands out from most fantasy books to me because of it's magic system. The height of which is, to maybe no one's surprise is Electromancy/Lightning. Each of the elements which elementalists wield have their own potential and practical uses. I loved Rachel's use of the system in this urban fantasy.
The characters really peak in this book which is why I'm glad there is just one more book in the series after this one. When the book ended, I found myself wanting more. And it does end, like bow-tied and all, we get the resolution to the original series. I want spit what that is because I myself enjoy spoiler-free reviews. SO THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE GETTING! I consider book 4 a gift from the author to me, she knew I was out here before she even met me. Thank you Rachel! I wanted one more before saying goodbye for reals.
So who should read this series:
-Someone who likes themselves good fantasy books -Someone who likes well developed magic systems -A person who enjoys a hot male character (oops...did I type that?) -A person who appreciates a strong female lead...(even if she is impulsive at times) -You, yes you. You should read this book series. For so many reasons!
📖 THE AWAKENING 📖 THE ENLIGHTENING 📖 THE CHRISTENING 📖 THE RECKONING by Rachel Rener
Overall, I thought this series was okay. Each book plot was better than the one before it... which means that the last book was the best of the series. But I think I prefer how Aspen was written at the beginning of the series. I really liked when it was only Aspen and Evelyn.
This series reminded me of the THE CIRCLE series by Tamora Pierce. The way each person has their own elemental affinity and how the group comes together, I think. The last time I read that series was in 1999.
The FMC that Rachel created definitely grows as a person. I remember while reading the second book, I was getting annoyed with her recklessness and her need to just follow through with the first idea/solution to the problems.
After reading two separate series by Rachel Rener, i can definitely see her love of the no nonsense grandmother/mother depicted in both series. So, if there is/was a real life inspiration for the role- that person probably feels honoured. 😁
Also, hats off to including a Jewish character in both series. It does add depth and diversity into the writing. But maybe that's because maybe I'm just so used to reading Magical /Paganistic or Christian characters.

Great conclusion to this magical series. The final installment brings a whirlwind of emotions, surprises, and lots of excitement. Questions are answered, true intentions revealed, characters polished to their final versions. Rowan/Aspen, now a fully acknowledged Pentamancer, has her life turned upside down, being introduced to the whole community. However, such life is exhausting - constantly in motion, always problems to solve or tend to, no time for herself. Naturally, this brings crises to her relationship with Aiden, topped by Wes' reappearance in her life, and the family drama only adds to the complex situation she is facing. nevertheless, the gravest danger comes from a wholly different source. I liked the tension created by constant shifting of suspicion and blame from character to character, not leaving it clear and certain who is the real evil here until the last moment possible. I also liked the conclusion in a sense it felt really realistic, no one could expect a full happy ending in a war-like situation. Maybe there were minor issues with the plot that got me thinking, or the tension between Aiden and Rowan resolved somehow by itself in the background, but otherwise I am satisfied with how the whole series got wrapped up.
This is book 3 in the series and it certainly ramps up the excitement. I’ve enjoyed each book but this one may be my favourite. After the events of the previous books, Aspen is now trying to navigate the complicated world of the Inner Circle, leaders of the Elementalists. She doesn’t know who to trust but knows she has to find a way to change the outdated views of the Asterians. With corruption and danger rife, will she survive her own revolution? I still love Evelyn, though she isn’t in this book as much as the earlier ones. Elizabeth really grew on me here, too. I like how the wider cast of characters has grown through the series, and each one is perfectly developed. The choices they all make are realistic to each of them. It was also fascinating to see the larger world of the Asterians. The politics at play felt very believable - so many older organisations fail to bring themselves into the modern age. This book ended very well and rounded off Aspen’s journey. I’m very much looking forward to seeing where her journey takes her in the final book!
As per usual Rachel did an incredible job with the emotional side of this book! I was a bit miffed at Aspen throughout this one for her dumb choices, in particular her choices with a certain ex...however Aiden totally reminded me of Christoff from Frozen during this one because of his love with Aspen but also knowing she is meant for something more and just doesn't want to get lost in it. All of our fabulous Elemenalist friends have been so fun. I REALLY loved all the political aspects of this book with Aspen as the reluctant chosen one and everything that meant for her and her friends suddenly being elevated by association. Aspen trying to make real change and the intrigue behind the scenes. This book is so much more than a cool story about love and elemental magic, it truly is also a reflection of a corrupt system. A society that could/is trying to dig their claws into the minds of the people and push the agenda that they are better than others and will do horrible things to their own if it means they get to what they want.
Book three this book ties everything up so it felt like the end, but there is one more book (think it's four years later) with another power hungry person no doubt (Or maybe one who got missed, saying that power can change people)
I must admit I got bored with this book some twists along the way but not shocking after all people can talk to you in your mind and wipe minds so anything is possible bad people are they bad or being controlled? Sadly this author is not shy to kill people you want to live. But for me this book lost me along the way.
Saying that the storyline is great something different there is lots of elementals books out there but this storyline is fresh. I loved the characters (her own Scooby gang) they are kind of the FBI CIA to police the power hungry.should of made her that title
