A Selkie prince forced to produce an heir. An omega destined to become a royal’s fated mate...
Prince Kai’s life as he knows it is now over. As the firstborn alpha to the Selkie King of the North, he’s required to produce an heir. Whether he wants to or not. When the Selkie Seekers finally present his fated mate, he dreads being tied to this stranger for the rest of his life. He can only hope his omega will be easy on the eyes and somewhat intelligent.
Raised in a family of good breeding, Luca always knew it was possible he’d end up the mate for an alpha of nobility. Only to whom, he never knew. Every time the Seekers summoned him for the humiliating presentation ceremony to royalty of all levels, he feared being stuck with some unbearable, abusive or very unattractive alpha. As an omega he doesn’t have the choice to say no. Not only is it his obligation, it’s the law. If he refuses, he and his family would become outcasts and banished from the Selkie community.
However, as soon as Kai enters the Great Hall of the North, it’s clear that the handsome prince is his alpha. Luca’s pleased with the choice the fates made until the king demands that not only he become pregnant within six months but produce an alpha pup with his son, otherwise he’ll be cast aside. And getting pregnant might be a problem...
Note: A 56k word m/m shifter mpreg story, this is the first book in the Royal Alpha series. Due to the “knotty” times in this book, it is recommended for mature readers only. It can be read as a standalone and, of course, has an HEA.
Sooooooooo .. where do I begin? 😂 First of all, I’ll admit that I wasn’t enamored with the omega in the beginning of this book. Don’t get me wrong, I love omega sluts just like everyone else. 😂🤣 And I can’t believe I am saying this but Luca was a bit too slutty and eager for an omega for my taste in the beginning. 😁 But I have never read seal shifters before, the narrator is one of my favorites, John Solo, and he can do no wrong in my eyes, and I really liked the sample so I decided to continue listening it. And I’m glad I did that because I ended up warming up to Luca in the end. 😌
If you want smexy, I assure you that you are getting abundant of it because the whole book was about Prince Kai getting Luca pregnant so that he won’t be set aside as a useless, barren omega. So lots of delicious smut and yummy knotting. 😋 And one of the best things about listening this book is that, I have never heard John making any of those noises in any other book. 😂 My god, whimpering, begging, pregnancy hormone crying, I had onehelluva blast listening this book. 👏 It was just way too amusing. 😂 And although this was insta-lust and Kai was a bit too haughty at first, I also ended up loving him as Luca’s fated mate. One haughty heir to the throne and one bratty, slutty omega, they made a good pair. 😏 And plus, I like Kai’s brothers, younger princes. So I’m quite eager to start listening book two. Special thanks to John Solo for making my day with all those special Luca voices because I think I’m going to re-listen them whenever I need a pick-me-up! 😁😘
Really, really, really liked this book. The world-building is exceptional, the people populating it diverse and complex. Kai and Dylan are so much fun and the sex is scorching hot. really enjoy reading this book!
I thought that this was a great story from a new author! Also, I think its the first mpreg selkie romance I have read! I enjoyed the characters (well, except the king and his lackey), and thought that having them be selkie shifters was fresh and fun.
Kai is the oldest of his brothers and thus bears the responsibility of taking over the throne after his father (who is a complete jerk, putting it mildly, lol). During one of the presentation ceremonies he finds his fated omega - his true mate, Luca. I really liked Luca. He was brave, he spoke up, and he wasn't going to be a pushover or a weak omega. I also thought that they had great chemistry together.
I loved that they shifted into seals from their skins - keeping with the actual myth of selkies having skins they throw on to actually shift, I loved it! Omega selkies are also now responsible for bearing the young - females died out years ago, so omegas have had to adapt to further the line. Because of this, there is a responsibility to have pups. If you're a fan of heats, knotting, wombs, self-lubing action, this might be the PERFECT story for you! There is a LOT of "knotty" times between Kai and Luca, that's for sure!
The one thing I could have used more of, and hope to get more of in future stories, is the world building, especially since this was the first book of the series. It's set in our present day world - there is a mention of a cell phone, a Brokeback reference, cars, and talk of humans. However, I was never sure if they lived in a made up country and why things are so formal, and do all humans know about shifters? I would also love to know more about the evolution and history for these shifters, since it's apparently very risky for omegas to have kids (Kai and his brothers are all born from different omegas - which actually made me wonder if maybe the king had something to do with that, not just birth risks...) because I don't see the omegas who are the MCs in this series all dying and still have a HEA.
I'm looking forward to stories for the rest of Kai's family! Rian needs someone to shake things up in his life a bit :D
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was almost a DNF for me but I did struggle through it. A great deal of this book was sex and the characters irritated me more than anything else. This could have easily been a MF romance with the switch of a few things. I hated Kai's attitude of "I'm the alpha and you will obey me" he pulled that card several times on Luca and not in a sexy way or "I need to protect you way". The only thing Luca seemed interested in was sex. He didn't seem to have much going for him other than he wanted sex all the time. The king was detestable but the fact that there was little in the way of motivate for him to be so extreme. It didn't make sense for him to cling to Kai being his heir, when he was unsuited for it. To say Kai must be my heir simply because Kai was from his fated mate, then turn around and try to break up Kai from his fated mate made zero sense to me. I would applaud the selkie aspect of the book except other than the use of skins there was little incorporation of selkie mythology. The last little bit with Luca and King was cute but made little sense given the rest of the book.
This is a tricky review to write because certain parts of this worked for me really well, but others kept me from connecting with the story. Complaints first so I can end on a good note:
1. Too much sex. Um, yeah, I know this might be a bonus to other folks and sometimes it works for me… but it really took over the story and left me wishing more time had been spent on world building.
2. Kai and especially Luca felt inconsistent. I get character and relationship growth, but their personalities would swing fairly broadly and it made it difficult to get attached to them as individuals or a couple.
3. The world building. I wish the seal skin had been explained better… they’re shifters, but they put it on? Selkies are part of Celtic or Norse mythology, but characters kept exclaiming Poseidon which is Greek mythos. I get that they’re both sea related, but creating a cohesive connection/explanation would have helped.
Stuff I enjoyed:
1. While I wish I understood it better, I liked what felt like an original world. Masters did do a good job of creating unique aspects which I’ve never read before.
2. The humor. Lots of fun banter, especially with Kai’s brothers.
3. Then ending and HEA.
4. Kai’s brothers. They were present enough in the story that I’m definitely invested and looking forward to each of their books. Next up is Rian’s book, The Selkie Prince & His Omega Guard.
Narration: I enjoyed John Solo’s narration a lot. Minus one character, it’s all men and he gave them all distinct voices that matched Masters’ descriptions of them.
This book is fluffy low-angst fun. It crosses over the Selkie world with Omegaverse. As the oldest offspring, Prince Kai, an alpha, is required to find his mate and produce an alpha heir. Various potential omegas are trotted out for his perusal. When he sees and then smells an Omega, Luca, both men realize that they have located their fated mate. Various hurdles appear, including edicts from their rather cruel King. This book reads easy, is not too deep, nothing is too unexpected, but it is light-hearted escapism. I plan to keep reading the series.
Omg!!!! Are you serious?! I hated this so much. Dnf 13% Kai was a spoiled dick. he found his fated mate and is already talking about being with other people? How could you!?😭
This book was a a little bit ridiculous at times, even with it being a PNR. Talk about just accepting something that just seems too bizarre to start with. IMO, if the story was a bit more detailed, these moments may have been avoided. Regardless, I was able to look past those few instances and actually enjoy the story.
My problem with this was the world’s rules. Omega’s had to present themselves ass up and naked to see if they were the alphas fated mate. Although I don’t see why having them ass naked was necessary when it seemed to all be to do with scents anyway. And the omega is basically forced to “welp a pup” even if they don’t like who they’re paired with.
The two mc’s were interested in each other, but just the fact that even if they weren’t they’d still have to impregnate the omega until he got prevalent, just really turned me off the whole story. Forced pregnancies are my worst nightmare.
Kai is the first-born alpha prince of the Selkies in the North. Luca is an only child Selkie omega. They are true mates and are given 6 months to get pregnant and then produce and alpha or Luca will be exiled.
Kai is outraged at the process of finding and claiming his mate. Luca is outraged that its taken 4 heats and he's still not pregnant.
This story is good, but OMG the story takes a back seat to the rutting and knotting and talking about rutting and knotting.
I really loved this series. It had everything I needed.
Shifters ✔️ Fated Mates ✔️ Mpreg ✔️ Amazing Characters ✔️ An Interesting Plot ✔️ A Whole Lot of Knotting ✔️ & Undeniable Chemistry ✔️
It was amazing. I just ate it all up one after the other. I literally just devoured the entire series and am now suffering from a pretty pathetic book... ehh series hangover. I really didn't want it to end and I really hope we get more in this series or atleast more from this author. I was so disappointed that there wasn't more by this author out there because I am pretty sure I would have read that too. I am actually taken aback by how much I loved this series and how much I will miss these characters. They were all pretty extraordinary.
The Selkie Prince's Fated Mate I really liked the world that this book introduced us too.
Also, I came to love Kai really quickly and I really really liked Luca. I loved these two and their dynamic which was so amazing. I love it when shifter books follow the rules but add in their own little twist. In this world, it is forbidden for Omegas and Alphas to lie with each other if they are not fated mates and the fact that Luca has not only been with another Alpha but been knotted by one too was just too delicious to let up. I was worried that it would become a plot point later in the book but the fact that it was such a non-issue was such a refreshing take. I think that is one reason I liked Kai so much but the main reason was his surety that everything would work out. The conviction with which he consoles Luca was so heart-wrenching. I loved, loved Kai and Luca.
Also, I loved the relationship that was established in this book between the brothers. I really liked all of them and even though they all considered Adrian to be a hard ass it was still obvious how much he loved them and they loved him. Also, family dinner every night, count me in.
The Selkie Prince & His Omega Guard
The Selkie Prince's Unexpected Omega
The Selkie Prince's Forbidden Mate
The Selkie Prince's Secret Baby
This series was extraordinary and I am really looking forward to more by J.J. Masters and maybe even more in this series (fingers crossed).
First, I had strong disliked to the Presentation Ceremony where Omegas naked on their hands and knees, ass up in the air in front of the crowds. I found that thing was ridiculous and humiliating to Omegas.
Second, never heard of Selkie before, so this book was new territory for me and kinda hard to grasped what the MC's animal side was.
Third, Luca wasn't a virgin so was Kai. That was a bit disappointed but when I read that Luca before met Kai, gave his virginity to an alpha and knotted for the first time by the same alpha and he did that for several times since Luca said that the alpha was his lover. "That was a major turn off for me because I thought knotting was intimate or something special thing to do between loved ones or fated mates. And Kai stated "Omegas were never to rut with alphas. Not unless they were their mates. Betas were more acceptable because there was no fear of an omega getting pregnant with a beta. But the risk was there with an alpha. There was also a risk of unintended bonding." Even if knotting wasn't special thing but I found that Luca's reason why he didn't choose a Beta was just BS he said "I was young. I foolishly wanted to experience a… a knot.” Yeah, young and foolish but when he said he wanted an experience but once he did it, he became addictive to it. Thank to him took heat suppressant, a risk of pregnancy was unheard of. Not a fan of Luca!

I knew going in that this book was mostly going to be porn, and most of the porn itself was fine (I'm not really into omegaverse but if you are you'd probably think this was pretty okay). What wasn't fine was the awkward and nonsensical world building, the stilted and amateurish dialogue, and the sense that the book was trying very hard to be more than just porn.
The book is 230 pages long on kindle, most of which is worldbuilding fluff that makes little to no sense and comes across more like the author is trying to show off how much research they did on seal reproduction. Several questions raised by the narrative itself are never answered and the king, who the narrative predominantly treats as a horrible person who may or may not have killed his past partners, is inexplicably forgiven at the end simply because he let Luca's family come to live with them.
All and all, this wasn't for me, and frankly would have benefited from less attempted world building, less atttempted plot, and sticking to what the author was relatively good at: sex scenes that used weird phrases that set off my fight or flight

I don’t know if I’m missing a more thorough explanation about the setting/world but it’s hard to get through a book when there’s no explanation of shifters or world building, or the selkies as a race. It feels unfinished and rushed. The ending was super abrupt and the whole repeated phrase “my bull” was cringe-worthy.
“You’re right, just being my fated mate does not automatically mean that I love you,”
A different shifter story with several new twists
If you like sex this one has lots of it, and there is a great story to go with it. Kai and Luca are both really sweet.
Kai is an Alpha Selkie Prince, and next in line, is forced to participate in Presentation Ceremonies until he finds his mate. Luca has been presented several times thankfully never being picked, until now. The two are fated mates and it shows in the care, banter, and even acceptance of each other’s past.
“We were meant to be together. You and I. No one else. Do you hear me?”
I really loved that all the brothers ate dinner together, and the dinner in Kai’s room was one of my favorite scenes. At this point, I really felt invested in the story and not only did I hope the best for Kai and Luca, I really wanted to know more about Rian (Adrian) and Caol. I know Vin is a servant, and probably my favorite servant ever, but I wish somehow, he could find a partner. Like I said, I’m totally invested in all these characters.
The only thing that I really didn’t care for was Nic (Dominic). I understand it leads to an important part of the story, but Nic being thrown in was random and personally I didn’t find the scene all that interesting. With so much of the story being unique and entertaining, this part fell flat.
Oh, and what’s up with Douglass? Hopefully, he gets what he deserves.
Overall, this story has a lot of new things for me when it comes to fated mates and shifters. I enjoyed it all and cant wait for the next in the series.
I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author.
J.J. Masters is a new-to-me author, but they aren't any longer! I adore shifter stories that have the fated mate trope, and this book had both. While I wasn't pleased by how the omegas and betas get treated in this setting, I still really enjoyed the book.
Kai.. At times I wasn't sure how I felt about his character, at first I liked him cause he wanted things to change. But then even his views of how omegas should be treated and how he kept warning Luka that he'd be 'put in his place' irked me. But throughout the whole story one thing was certain, Kai loved his stubborn and persuasive fated mate.
Luka... I really liked his character, he didn't just bow down and submit to anyone and that really gave him personality and made him different from the other characters. He really challenged Kai, and they were great together.
I haven't read very many shifter stories about Selkie shifters, so this world and the characters were very unique. The idea of the shifters having a skin to put on before they could shift was very interesting to me, I haven't read anything that had that component before.
I was constantly amused by Kai's brothers, they were all great. Each brother had their own personalities and quirks, but above all they stood behind Kai and accepted Luka.
I'm really looking forward to reading more of this series, I hope all of the brothers get their own stories. And that Douglas guy? Kai's right, what a pest!
Good beginning to a new mpreg shifter series. It’s the first one that I’ve read to feature Selkies. The way they shift was interesting to me, and nothing like I’ve read before. The plot is the typical royal prince must beget an heir, and omegas have basically no rights, and the King is a royal douche canoe plot. And it’s done very well, so I’m happy because I love that trope. I love that love trumps all the royal b.s. and that the new generation will forge new paths. The setup for the rest of the series is well done and very intriguing. I loved the two main characters, their connection, and the fact that they aren’t your typical perfect characters. Kai has some of his father’s traits (he can be a jerk) and Luca was not your typical chaste omega. He’s quirky and fun, but you can get a sense of his underlying vulnerability. The narration by John Solo was as outstanding as ever. I love his voice especially when he is acting the part of the omega type roles. They just suit him very well. I get so lost in his narration because he IS the characters. I can really get a mental picture of his characters as I am listening because he brings them to life. I am very definitely looking forward to reading and listening to the rest of the series, and I definitely recommend this new adventure.
This book mainly focuses on Kai and Luca getting pregnant and conceiving an alpha heir. The sex was abundant and added some fun to this book but other than that there wasn't a lot of substance to this story, which was a little disappointing. For me personally, I enjoy when a book (especially the first of the series) gives more details rather than leaving breadcrumbs that tie into the rest of the series. If this series wasn't available as the full set then I'm not sure I'd have the patience to wait and listen to the rest when they eventually came out. I decided to listen to part of the series before I came back to leave a review and I'm on book 3 with questions still unanswered. The pace is killing me, I want to know more about why King Solomon is the way he is and why Douglas is such a callous little tool... but their stories are just a bunch of teasers, each book we get to find out more but I'm still missing details. If you can't read/listen to this series back to back and you're like me, then wait to get the full series before you take on these books. I really do love the brothers and all of the extra characters from the beta servants, to the omegas. The characters and narration make this series very enjoyable. So if you get frustrated with this first book giving very little plot just keep going it does get better!
For adult readers only due to sexual content. Kai is the first born son of King Solomon of the Selkies. The king wants to assure his bloodline lives in to hold the throne, so has "showings" for Kai to find his mate and produce an alpha heir. Kai finds his mate in Luca after a few showings and the king gives them six months to become pregnant and it has to be an alpha or the child and the omega (Luca) will be banished. No pressure. The king is a hard add and seems to care nothing for no one other than his royal bloodline keeping the throne, but other than him, most of these characters are extremely likeable. Luca is quirky and funny at times. Kai is a dominate alpha, but not an unfeeling ass. The brothers are in the background, but the little bit they are mentioned, they seemed to be good characters as well (mostly). I wasn't sure what to expect with this make on make story, because it's not something I usually read, but this was really quite good. The story did not focus on the sexuality, it gave a plausible reason for why and how this species is this way and I liked that. The Luca character made the story have some funny parts with his attitude even though he wasn't "alpha". I will watching for book two in Oct. 2018
Selkie 101 Wow what an amazing surprise I got when I asked a question on the Facebook site Begging for Mpreg and MM. I said I never read anything about selkies and if someone could recommend a good book. Well did they ever. I wasn't sure what to expect. I didn't read any descriptions just downloaded the three book bundle and I am so glad that I did. Since I'm already halfway through the Second book in the series.
This First book had so much I never expected. I love reading about Omegas, mpreg, situations that reveal the strength of an Omega, and how a fated mate can change their life. I got so much more in this book. First, I finally learned about Selkies. Second, I met a great royal family of brothers actually princes with a father who adhered to archaic principles / laws. Third, I met an Alpha determined to help his Omega and make life better for future Omegas when he ascended to the throne. Fourth, the Omega MC had to be strong to not be ground down by the tyranny of the North Country Selkie King. And fifth, J. J. Masters is a wonderful writer. I am so happy I read this book and look forward to future titles by this author.
This is a new a twist to shifter romance and a new author for me. Kai is not happy he has to pick a mate from a line of omegas life for him as he knows it is over but the fates have a better plan for him. Luca is on display again and this time he knows his mate is in the room what he thinks will be the happiest time for him gets even better when he sees who he will spend the rest of his life with. Not everyone is happy with the couple king who is jackass I'm mean really you will not like him are that little weasel Douglas. The king put so much pressure on them until you want to jump in the book kill him. I love the the fact that Kai treats Lucas as his equal and how down to earth he is even though he is next in line to be the king. The twist I like was how they have to put on their seal skin to shift. My favorite part is when Lucas makes the Royal Pain in the butt speechless. This is a sweet story that's well written and interesting I can't wait to read the next book. Rain story will be interesting because he is just like the king. I voluntarily read a arc copy.
More like 2.5, I was not impressed with the world building since it seems obvious to me that the author is pointing out that this is an alternate universe. Other authors that have done this in the omegaverse have noted that the previous civilization has either failed, or that it still exists beside the shifter world but doesn't really interact with it. This author seems to try to straddle that line and it leads to some stutters in understanding for me. Aren't selkies an Irish legend? Then why are they praying to Poseidon and Neptune? If this is essentially current North America, why don't they mention the geopolitical setup in North America? Cascadia is essentially the Pacific Northwest of the US/Canada. Where is this Northern Kingdom? Finlandia? It all seems mashed together and confusing. This was enough to keep pulling me out of the story. I also found King Solomon to be without a single redeeming quality. Hard to understand why his sons don't want to be in exile if they have to live with this monster.
Well, it was not good !!! The first sentence is about Kai going hard because he found his fated mate. Talk about an abrupt start !!!! No chemistry between the MCs !! They basically fell in love one day after they met !! Worl record instalove ever ! There was a lot of repetition but, at the same time, no explanation on essential elements. Like, they are selkies that are a kind of seal I guess. When they go in the sea, they have to wear their skin ??? So weird ! Usually, in shifters stories, characters just "shift". But here, they have to go in a cave and put on their skin !!! Ewww !!! No clue why it is this way. We are told over and over again that whelping is very dangerous for the pregnant omegas. But, Luca just whelps and there's nothing worth mentioning.
I was annoyed by Luca always craving sex and whining for it ! And Kai refused to bottom ! WTF !! because he is the alpha ! What a bunch of crap !
I'm gonna read the next book about Rian because he's a royal dick and hope he's gonna meet his match !!
I really love the storyline of this book, and both the main characters were amazing. This book is about Kai and his ability to find a mate, and a mega to bear his pup. As you can tell by the title of this book is about selkes or seals shifters. It’s different than anything I have ever read, and it had a really good storyline. Nature has taken all the female selkes , and in the last 300 years evolution has changed the Omega‘s to be able to carry in bear their pups. Like I said, very unusual. But the storyline was very good and there was a lot of sex in the book. This book of course is M/M, so know what you’re getting into. But I think in the case of this book I think it was a little obsessive. The storyline was so good but it was overtaken. I probably will continue to read the series, because the author had a very unique idea and I do like the storyline. And of course there’s always a happily ever after with a baby.
