This isn’t the life Cole dreamt of, but what choice does he have?
With his twenty-third birthday behind him, Cole Moreton now faces the shifter compatibility test which will decide his future. Testing positive means joining a pack and eventually taking the bite. Unfortunately, with enviable skills in self-defence and hand-to-hand combat, the kind of packs interested in him aren’t any he’d want to join.
Logan has been a member of the McKillan pack for most of his life. Pack is family and loyalty is everything, but when the shifter government turns out to be no better than the oppressive humans before them, he questions everything.
Right from their first meeting, Logan knows that a life with the McKillan pack isn’t right for Cole, but with his alpha taking a keen interest in Cole’s skills, Logan’s hands are tied. Mutual attraction builds between them, but acting on it is futile—helping Cole will put their lives at risk and an end to any future they could’ve had.
Annabelle Jacobs lives in the South West of England with her three rowdy children, and two cats.
An avid reader of fantasy herself for many years, Annabelle now spends her days writing her own stories. They're usually either fantasy or paranormal fiction, because she loves building worlds filled with magical creatures, and creating stories full of action and adventure. Her characters may have a tough time of it—fighting enemies and adversity—but they always find love in the end.
I very much enjoyed Annabelle's previous shifter series, The Regent's Park Pack series, so of course, I had to read this new series as well. It's a bit different...but just as wonderful.
Now when I started this book, I figured it was gonna be like the Regent's Park books, each book a different couple. That's where I was wrong. This one ends on an open ending, with no HEA in sight for our heroes just yet....there is some promise though
I also wouldn't say this first book was very romantic, even though it is chock full of sexual tension The steam was also fairly low, but I am sure there will be some major explosions in the future !!
There is no question about Cole and Logan ending up together...I am pretty sure they are made for one another, and they know it too. It is just that there are some other present matters that took the front seat in this first novel. And what a ride it was !!!
I was completely drawn into the worldbuilding and spent most of my time reading biting my nails and trying not to fall off my seat.
This was a wonderful introduction into a new series and I for one am already hooked. I can't wait to see what will be next and I just hope the wait won't be too long.
I highly recommend this new series !!

When I first started reading this I thought: Ahhh, another Regent's Park Pack story (I’m a big fan of the series)! But well I was so wrong! It was so different from that series but nearly as good as them! In this new world AJ has created, all positions of power were held by shifters or humans affiliated to a pack. This new world she has created wasn’t really pleasant and the Alpha was a bit shady in my eye! I didn’t like the way they treated the humans but well you can see it through the title! Told in dual POV, 3rd person, it’s the first installment in the "Rebellion" series and it’s a bit cliffy. I was on the edge of my seat during reading it. It’s a bit angsty, slow-paced and well-written. Overall, I enjoyed this and hope you like it as well!
I’m a bit of a paranormal romance freak and I am over the moon with all the new shifter releases lately. Can’t deny I was super stoked to see Jacobs was starting a new series. If you’re expecting something similar to her most recent and famous Regent’s Park Pack series I’m sorry to say this is nothing close. However, there’s nothing sorry about this intriguing new world. If you’ve read her Altered series you might find this book comes across as a cousin. Which reminds me! I began that series way back when and never finished. I’m feeling the urge to wander back and correct that mistake. Looking forward to completing that series too! Back on track…this story wasn’t romance-centric and it was rather lofty with the world-building. I believe this was necessary to lay a solid foundation for what’s to come. Jacobs also left the door hanging open while I gapped like a fish out of water as I read the last page. So if cliffy’s aren’t your thing, you might want to wait until the next book is released and tackle them back to back. Yet, I was thrilled to kick things off and if she was looking for my attention, she’s got it. When’s book two coming?? Ha. I never said patience was a strong suit of mine.
What's to like: Interesting shifter world, unlike anything I’ve ever read! When children 'come of age’ they are tested to determine if they are solid potential for the shifting community. Politics and power were abused and consequently were transferred from the humans to the shifters….and the shifters intend to keep it that way. Unfortunately, not all of the shifters of power continue to lead with justice and equality; and corruption is spreading like wildfire. Cole is terrified that his test will highlight his gifts and that every pack wants to secure him. His greatest fear is one pack in particular and it’s not a grand surprise that they send someone to observe him on the big day. He would be kidding himself if he claimed ignorance of the results of his test. He’s a solid hit. He’d be the perfect shifter. A fine-tuned fighter that any pack would be eager to claim. But it’s not a life he wants. He may fight like a skilled warrior but his heart is tender and taking lives would destroy his. Worst of all, he can’t fight the draw he feels for Logan. A shifter. What? He doesn’t want to be one, how could he have feelings for one? But soon Cole will discover that this is much bigger than just him. He knew change was coming but he never anticipated everything was going to change.
What's to love: As always, I love Annabelle’s guys. Cole is young and stubborn but deeply afraid. He wants to throw up a shield and ignore the unpredictability of his future. He doesn’t trust anyone. Especially not the sexy shifter that keeps coming into his space. Logan is older and perhaps wiser but far from happy. He loves his pack but he does not love the direction they have been headed lately. He has witnessed the destruction forced claiming can do and he can’t sit by and watch anymore. Risking everything, he has joined secret forces to help humans escape the bite. Partaking in an underground railroad of sorts, he is a key component in selecting humans desperate enough to leave their lives behind. He knows in his heart Cole is one of the few willing to make such a sacrifice. He just never expected Cole to consume him and take over his heart. They have no chance. None. Best to just accept and admit it wasn’t meant to be. That is until Jacobs throws a curveball and a heart-racing ending. Not sure what we will see when the dust finally settles…but I cannot wait!
Beware of: Forbidden and undesired love. Hair-raising battles in a world run by wolves. And an ending that might make you cuss but will certainly leave you…craving more.
This book is for: If paranormal is your thing and you don’t mind the focus on the story rather than the romance, I have a feeling this Escape is exactly what you need!
I feel pretty much the same about this as on my first read. The plot is great, but the declarations of love towards the end still hit me quite 'unexpectedly'. Very engaging all in all!
original review
What a great start to this series! I was captivated from word go and totally sucked into the thriller type plot unfolding in the second half of the book.
Annabelle Jacobs has created yet another very captivating shifter alternative universe. In this one, shifters took the power from humans who used to treat them abominably and like animals. They are the ones who run the country now, and (isn’t it inevitable?) make exactly the same mistakes as their former oppressors.
Humans are forced to test whether they might be compatible to become shifters at the age of 23 and Cole is just about to take the test. However, gaining greater powers and senses doesn’t exactly cause a lot of enthusiasm on his part. Basically, Cole is a peaceful guy and knows that his natural talent for fighting and using weapons is going to be exploited if he is put into the McKillan pack (one infamous for these skills in particular).
Ms. Jacobs did a really good job describing Cole’s dilemma, his feelings and horror. I ached for him because there seems to be no way out his situation, and it looks like his whole life is going down the drain.
Until Logan, the shifter trying to recruit him to the McKillan pack gives him another option. Albeit a very dangerous one. Logan is a real hero in my eyes, doing the right thing under very difficult circumstances, while putting his life on the line. I really liked his empathy and sensitivity and the all encompassing kindness of his heart.
In this first book the author sets very much the scene for what is no doubt to follow – the fight of shifters and humans who believe in equality of both against the dictatorial shifter government. And by the looks of it, Cole and Logan are going to be right in the middle of it.
If you are wondering about the romance part … It probably is over shadowed a little bit by everything else going on, but we do get lots of attraction and sparks between our two guys, more on Logan’s part to start with, but Cole catches up pretty soon. There is a lot of ‘I know I shouldn’t, I can’t, there is no point’ but, of course, things happen anyway. Even if they are pretty tame in this first book (and strangely that didn't bother me too much here) there are tons of feelings which I appreciated. However, for me the ILYs at the end came too soon.
A super start to a series I’m definitely going to go for!
I'm going to state from the off that I think this is the best shifter story Annabelle's written and, as I've pretty much five-starred nearly all her shifter novels, that's saying something.
However, I will say this book falls more on the paranormal than the romance - at this point in the series - although I have no doubt the passion which connects between Cole and Logan will end up being just as steamy and emotionally satisfying as everything from this writer.
The malevolent tensions overhanging the plot of this book are felt from the off, this is not a fluffy shifter world. This is a UK where the once persecuted became the perpetrators of even greater injustices and where those with the wolf compatability gene are forced to join a pack and take the bite.
I loved everything, absolutely everything, about this book, including some surprising geographical stops on the way which reminded me of a holiday I once took in that particular part of England and anything like that always gives me an even deeper connection to a book.
There is such great world-building, and so different to Annabelle's Regents Park Series. This London and these shifters are nothing like Alpha Cam Harly's pack. There is a sense of foreboding the minute the McKillan name is mentioned.
A bit road trip, a bit thriller, a bit romance, a bit suspense, all the elements combine perfectly into a plot which drives the reader through the dangerous world we're being introduced to and some of the people trying to make things just a little bit better.
Book two can't come soon enough for me!
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review
Unashamed gushing is all my work and I totally own it 😁😉
Okay, that ending both pissed me off and is gonna keep me anxiously awaiting the next book in this series. Because I felt like it was a slap in the face to all those who risked their lives to help Cole...but then again I'm always up for a good political revolution.
At first I was a little confused because it doesn't seem like 10 or so years was nearly enough time to completely upend the government that way, but then I got to thinking about history and realized, no it's quite possible. Especially when promises are made and then ignored once the power shifted. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It's an old, oft-repeated saying, and it applies here to those in charge, from the very top to the middle management.
So many parallels (metaphors? I'm never good with figuring that out) to events past and present that, if you look underneath the hood of this story, really resonated. I kept wondering why people would stick around London if there was even a chance of this forced affiliation/biting for their children, but in retrospect it's kind of a war zone. No, there's no bombs...but people shouldn't have to leave their homes to find safety. They do, and no doubt it's a more logical route for some (thus the CED, here) - but I'm glad there's a resistance and that while it might take a while, that maybe a balance between the shifters and humans can be obtained.
It doesn't have that high of a cumulative rating here at GR but maybe for me it was the right book at the right time.
I enjoyed this, even though it would’ve been the last book I’d picked at the present time, if I’d known in advance what it was about. Despite my initial misgivings about the setting and premise of the book, I found the turn of the story—with the characters —oddly comforting. The romance wasn’t quite as convincing, though. At first it seemed like this would be the rare exception to the rule and the MCs would take it slow, also given that the next book in the series seems to be about them. Even then, I wasn’t sold on how quickly they trusted and seemed to have grown to care for each other in such a short time, especially given their circumstances, but I was ready to close an eye because the relationship itself wasn’t the main focus. Then came , for no reason that I can discern except that apparently authors think it’s required by law. Too bad, I would’ve appreciated the novelty of letting things progress at a more natural pace.
This wasn’t the right book at the right time for me. I struggled through the first half when I should have loved it. It was totally me, I’ve been a bit weird book wise recently.
But I’m so glad I stuck with it. I really enjoyed the second half and loved the world building. So it’s straight onto the next book Defiance for me now.
I thought this was a solid and enjoyable shifter book! Kind of a dystopia feel, which I enjoyed, though I felt like some aspects of the world building didn't quite fell believable to me, particularly given the timeline. I really enjoyed the characters and their connection, and the stakes kept me on my toes. I could see the ending coming from the start, and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about where we're going for book two, but I'm keeping an open mind. Relatively low heat here, which felt okay given the slow burn and the fact that this couple will be featured in the next book, but I'm really hoping we get a bit more steam in that one.
With the release of Escape, Annabelle Jacobs has started a new paranormal series featuring a carefully created world that has humans being tested for compatibility with wolves and potentially taking the bite that will transform them into shifters. For some, the idea is very appealing, but for many, it is a form of enslavement that leaves them filled with dread and fear. Cole is one such human. Logan understands Cole’s reluctance and despises the idea that he must be the envoy who will be responsible for bringing Cole in and also moving him to a branch of the pack known for its savagery and delight in hunting humans. But there is nothing Logan can do—unless Cole is willing to give up everyone and everything and simply disappear.
The world building by this author was really incredible. The reader is immersed in a world turned upside down where it’s the humans who are hunted and controlled as opposed to the shifters. With just a touch of background before we are thrust into this new way of life, it isn’t clear how the wolves were initially forced into subjugation or how they managed to rise up and take back their lives.
This was awesome! Though it does not tie up at all - it's not a cliffhanger but def. there is more to come as this is in no way finished. I loved the world building and the great sense of place you get here. Little bit of politicking - it's fine and I can deal.
I really cannot wait until the Rebellion starts (given the series title, I believe that is an accurate statement) as I can see how fun and action based it is going to be.
P.S. I purchased this - not a review of an ARC or anything.
4.5 stars - I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Wolf 🐺 shifter stories are my favorite paranormal/fantasy stories. There are so many books out there with different kinds of shifter, but wolves are where it’s at for me. I tend to avoid all the other dragon/panther/bear shifter stuff.
This was different from other shifter books I’ve read. It starts with humans in governmental power. The humans know about shifters, but they’re kept under close watch. They have all kinds of restrictions. Apparently there was an uprising that changed the power over to the shifters. But it’s very clear that the wolves are now the oppressors and some wolves don’t like that. Now it’s the wolves who are imposing all these new rules and regulations upon humans and other wolves. “You’re as bad as the government you fought so hard to replace.”
I liked the characters and the pacing. Nothing ever got boring. I would have liked a little bit more romance here, but I can see why it didn’t get more involved. My only complaint is that we don’t know how old Logan is. We know Cole is 23 since that is when the humans are tested for “shifter compatibility.” There are times when he seems much younger than 23. Perhaps he’s just naïve. Logan is definitely more mature and I like the way he guides Cole.
The ending is somewhat of a cliffhanger. Some things are resolved, but there’s still a long way to go. I’m happy that the next two books are already available and I can jump right into the next one. I’d definitely recommend this series if you’re into shifters and action. Hopefully there’s more sexy times in the next book. 😉🐺♥️🐺🥰
I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
This is a creepy, action packed dystopian thriller set in London. In the not too distant future, humans are ruled and controlled by shifter packs. When 25 yr old Cole takes his mandatory Shifter Compatibility Tests, he is faced with terrifying options for his future. To escape,Cole is forced to place his trust in Logan, the shifter tasked with easing him into the McKillan Pack. The result is a terrifying game of cat and mouse as Logan attempts to help Cole to safety.
This is an exciting read. I’m not always a fan of dystopian writing but I really loved the world building here. I also love the familiar UK setting. I’m not sure if this is futuristic of set in a parallel now but I enjoyed the nods to current and historic events. Some scenes made me reflect on current politics while others reminded me of the Resistance in WW2 or the Underground Railway in America.
It took time for me to warm to the characters in this book, mostly because they all need to work hard to blend in to survive their oppressive shifter government. At the start, Cole and Logan are both deliberately bland and beige and it isn’t until they start taking risks that they begin to feel more like individuals. By the end, I really loved them both and they are both interesting enough characters to carry the series. While this is marketed as m/m romance, there really isn’t much romance in the book. It’s a dystopian thriller. I really enjoyed this first book and I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series.
ESCAPE is the first book in the Rebellion series, and we are introduced to a world where shifters rule over the humans, including the how's and why's of how it happened. Now, if you have read any of the Regents Park series, prepare yourself - because this is completely different!
At age 23, all humans have to be tested. If positive, they join a pack, either as a shifter or as a human affiliate 'usually'. If negative, they can carry on with their human life as before. Two of Cole's siblings tested negative, but he is the 'unlucky' one. Because of his skillset, there is only one Pack who wants him, and it's the one with the worse reputation. Not only that, but he would be put into the group he likes least of all. Logan does what he can, but that's not much. Or maybe there's more...
This world has some harsh realities and Annabelle Jacobs has built it up perfectly! The difference between Packs is made completely obvious, as well as the differences between the humans and shifters. The main characters are Logan and Cole (obviously) but they are ably supported by a whole host of others, including one of my favourites - Max.
This is not a complete story. In fact, it has one helluva ending that will leave you biting your nails as you wait for the next instalment. There is no light at the end of the tunnel so far, just a whole load of hardship.
A brilliant start to a new series I can't wait to continue, I have no hesitation in absolutely recommending this fantastic story.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *
I read through my possible ARC lost and saw this series ... but was not quite sure about it as this is my first book by Ms. Jacobs , so I just asked for this one at first .... but after the first half it was clear, I had to get the others as well.
The world building in this book is very interesting and I liked the way both shifters and humans made mistakes and commit not only real horrors but also real great actions as well.
At the beginning I had some troubles with Cole although I could understand him. Ms. Jacobs does a great job in portraying his character and why his possible choices are so absolutely awful for him. Login was a great character and I admired him and his steadfastness.
The story and its development was quite a surprise as I had more or less two possible scenarios in my head how this would play out but I was really wrong.
I was fascinated by this book and can't wait to read the next one
i loved this.. it was amazing and wonderful.. sexy and curious.. kept me on edge wondering what was next... sweet and interesting. action packed and good. i liked it a lot

Escape is the debut in a new series by Annabelle Jacobs, Rebellion.
With a mix of dystopian and urban fantasy, Escape had a dark, hopeless vibe, which had me turning the pages at a rapid pace.
At the start, we get a small prologue showing the events that led to the current administration. Shifters were the minority, held under what was essentially a police state. With an uprising to even the balance, it pitched the opposite direction, with the humans being held under a police state, with the shifters in power. Opposite ends of the same atrocity.
23-year-olds are forced to be tested to see if they're compatible to be changed into a shifter. Bitten. Then they are affiliated with packs, which hold varying amounts of power, as well as contribute to different parts of the governmental structure.
Cole is terrified, as it's a one-in-four chance of having the gene, with his parents and two siblings testing negative. The odds weren't on his side, as he was terrified of becoming a monster. Having tested high in the martial arts and weaponry, Cole knew he would be enlisted into the most cruel sector, where they patrolled/controlled the humans, and if the rumors were correct, he would be forced to take the bite.
Logan is a recruiter, the one who touches base with those who test positive, making sure they're placed where they best fit, signing the contract.
Cole and Logan's lives collide, showcasing how dark and hopeless their lives are on each side, both human and shifter.
What I want to applaud Annabelle Jacobs for is the world building. Solid, easy to understand, a fully formed world, with structures explained in a non-info-dump fashion, unfolding organically as the story was told.
Dark and depressive, a hopeless air that lent perfectly to a rebellion. The pacing was swift, unraveling all the reader needed to know, ending on a slight cliffhanger as the setup for the sequel.
The reason I couldn't pass out a 5-Star rating is simply because the character development and the romantic entanglement suffered with how thorough the world building was presented. Honestly, I preferred the world building being explained to the character building.
While I adore slow-burn, I wouldn't call it slow-burn between Logan and Cole, because of how very little they share page-time together. So that connection for me was missing. Lust, I could understand. But even though it was near the end of the novel, declarations of love felt out of place and too soon, because of how very little they interacted with one another prior to that to build the foundation necessary.
Highly recommend to fans of the author and those looking for something different, with a solid world building structure, bridging the gap between dystopian and urban fantasy.
Having read Jacobs’ books set in Regent’s Park Pack universe, I dearly hoped the timeline of this new series was way WAY ahead of the RPP ones. Because, what a gloom world it turned into, and I just couldn’t bear it!
ESCAPE is the first installment in Jacobs’ yet new paranormal romance series “Rebellion” - set in a world where shifters (as in wolf shifters) took over the power in AU UK. ESCAPE raised issue about power imbalance where the majority (almost) always oppressed the minority, glimpsing at the repression experienced by both groups at the hand of the other’s.
This rather gloom and slow pacing tale accounted the personal battles the leading men face. Mediator shifter Logan met candidate Cole Moreton when Cole went through the compatibility test and despite their opposing interests they struck up some sort of friendship - and later on, Logan offered a way out if Cole didn’t want to become a shifter and joining his pack.
While the pack’s ruthlessness wasn’t explicitly shown at the earlier part of the story it was heavily implied and set the course for a rather dim undertone throughout. Rather than a series of standalones, “Rebellion” is likely going to be the kind of series that needed to be followed sequentially with ESCAPE opening the path (to potential rebellion in the future) for the following sequels. The alternate POVs between Cole and Logan lent insight into the men’s turmoil over the the whole situation and of the unexpected attraction they felt toward each each other. It made the book interesting enough to follow, waiting for when axe would fall.
On the romance front, this is the least hot and graphic romance of Jacobs’ I’ve read so far. Although that didn’t make it less engaging. With the way the story concluded - not exactly cliff-hanging but yet to fully completed - it agonized me what fate waiting for these pair on the next installment, moreover the battle the following sequels would bring. I certainly could not wait for them to be released!
Copy of this book is kindly given by the author in exchange for an honest review.
There are so many shifter books out there, so I truly appreciate when an author starts a new shifter series with some new, unique points that I haven’t encountered previously. It keeps the genre fresh for me (though I can’t really picture myself tiring of it regardless), and lets me think about shifters in a previously unseen way. Annabelle Jacobs has done that here for me in Escape, and in doing so now has me hooked for this new series.
The idea of shifters being a case of the oppressed becoming the oppressors, as well as the testing and pack affiliations that happen once people reach a certain age was something I found intriguing. Though at first I was just a tiny bit unsure about the McMillan pack and Michael McMillan’s way of ruling, the lure of what is essentially a shifter underground railroad combating the system drew me in quite easily to this world.
The relationship between Logan and Cole is more of a secondary focus to the threat presented by humans being forced to join packs and be bitten to become shifters. Though there are people who are definitely okay with that, there’s also those who are clearly NOT (like Cole), and that discord erupts spectacularly in this story. There’s plenty of action, suspense, and drama as Logan and Cole try to navigate their way to a safer solution, and Escape turns out to be the spark to something even bigger.
I’m intrigued by the premise of this series, and Escape was a great was to draw me in. I can’t wait to read more to see how Logan and Cole’s relationship will develop from here, since saying there are obstacles in their way might be a bit of an understatement. Escape was a solid 4-star read for me, and if your a fan of M/M shifter romance/romantic suspense, you’ll definitely want to check this story out. This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and some sexual content.
Based on the first book alone, this new series is bound to be absolutely amazing. Shifters, action, romance, it has it all and more! I love it, and can't wait for the next book to come!!! Reread in 2021: Still hold on to the idea that this is a really good one. It'd been a good distance between book 1 and 2 and I didn't remember all details clearly, so I decided to do a reread. I still felt excited over the plot and the events, which says a lot.
Escape by Annabelle Jacobs is the first book in the Rebellion series. London is now governed by the shifters and ruled according to pack law. Cole Moreton has reached the age where he must test for shifter compatibility. He is highly skilled in hand to hand combat as well as weapons and is afraid of what his test results may lead to. His fears are realized when Logan McKillan comes around letting him know he’s been chosen by the McKillan pack and will be under a particularly ruthless leader, Paul. But there is more to Logan than just a liaison to the pack and as he and Cole grow closer every choice they make leads to an uncertain future.
Cole Moreton is stuck in a position he never thought he’d be in. He’s being courted by a pack that is known for their strictness and penchant for violence but the shifter sent to inform him is comforting yet confusing. Cole immediately feels a connection with Logan that is only strengthened as they begin their journey towards his escape. Although never too hot and heavy the intimate moments are more about comforting each other even when they can’t have a future.
“They didn’t have time for this, should’ve been on their way already, but wrapped up in Logan like this, Cole felt truly safe for the first time since they left his home.”
Logan McKillan is split between pack loyalty and what’s right. He understands that not everyone is meant for pack life and wants to give people the choice. While he continues his role in the underground escape process, he struggles not to be swayed towards leaving with Cole. He is drawn to Cole’s strength and wants to continue being around him even when it’s not safe.
“Can you um… do your thing?” “My thing?” “Yeah… your wolf thing.” He then patted the spot next to him. Logan grinned. “You want me to shift into my wolf and keep you warm?” “Please.”
I always appreciate a book that provides you with a new and unique perspective on shifters. This world ruled by a shifter government is definitely that for me and I appreciated the world building that took place. I found myself becoming quite attached to Cole and Logan and felt the romance aspect of the story was well paced giving them a few weeks to become involved rather than the few hours instalove I was fearful of. I look forward to seeing where their story goes.
First of all, I've enjoyed Annabelle Jacob's previous work. Between that and the great reviews, and I ended up giving this one a try without reading the blurb too carefully. That was a mistake. Look, I think that the book itself was quite good in a lot of ways. The writing is good and the novel is suspenseful. Now, I wouldn't say this one is a romance. That's too bad, because if it was, I would be more inclined to forgive what I saw as a limited scope in the worldbuilding. The premise is that the main characters live in a regime where shifters oppress humans. However, that world doesn't seem to extend farther than the UK. The few times when the outside is mentioned, it was mostly to emphasize how they're not really helping too much other than offering asylum to a very select group of people--surely other countries would have some reaction? And what are the other countries? There are English landmarks but it isn't explicitly spelled out what this place is. Normally I wouldn't care much about world-building, but the focus was on the paranormal elements and the suspense plot rather than the romance, so a fuller understanding of the dictatorship and the world surrounding the dictatorship (as well as the history of this paranormal world) would have gone a long way to alleviating my frustration with the book's other elements. However, if I missed something a sincerely apologize. The two main characters are Cole, a human, and Logan, the werewolf tasked with bringing Cole into his pack. I liked Cole, but I was frustrated by the injustice of his situation. I felt like I wasn't able to enjoy reading about him because I was so caught up in how hopeless his future felt. The werewolf, Logan, frustrated me to no end because, even though he was not 100% contributing to the status quo, he still wasn't doing enough in my opinion. In fact, I passionately hated almost every single shifter we encounter in the book thanks to the situation with shifters oppressing humans. This was too bad, because normally I love books about wolf shifters!!! But no. Instead, my fun was ruined. Look, this is maybe just a me thing, but I want to enjoy what I read. People who love suspense and characters that face an unjust system will love this one, but it just wasn't for me. **I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review**
This shifter universe flipped many of my expectations upside down, starting with the idea that shifters are always the ones oppressed when humans and wolves collide. Cole and Logan lived in the aftermath of a shifter power takeover, and it was both fascinating and upsetting to see how those in power used their influence to keep humans subdued. As the star fighter in his class, Cole was under harsh scrutiny to join one of the most notoriously violent packs--the same one Logan belonged to. Their romance seemed doomed from the start, and even after I found out about the undercover operation Logan was involved in to save humans who didn't want to take the bite, I couldn't see a path for them to be together. That doesn't mean I got any less attached to their secret kisses and stolen moments. As Cole wrestled with the difficult decision in front of him-- abandon his friends and family or compromise his personal values--I found myself searching for any loophole to keep Cole and Logan together. Their romance felt like more of a prequel than a fully-fledged relationship, but I could still sense how deeply they cared for each other. When their carefully planned escape turned into a heart pounding and violent run for their lives, I was right there rooting for the two of them to make it out in one piece. With an unexpected and thrilling set of twists and turns, I can honestly say that I never knew where Cole and Logan's journey would take them next. I'll admit that I don't really understand why Cole made the choices he did about continuing to run vs. returning to fight, but it made for an exciting launching point for the rest of this series.
**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
Cole Moreton knows what will happen when he takes his shifter capability test. If he is positive, he will be forced to join a pack and eventually to take the bite. He has skills in defense and combat and knows the packs who will want him are not ones he will want. Logan is a member of the McKillan pack and is tasked with helping Cole become a member of the pack. He knows that the pack is not a good fit for Cole but his alpha is quite interested in him and Logan has no choice. While the two find themselves attracted to each other, Logan helping Cole to avoid his fate will not allow them to act on that desire.
Anabelle Jacobs has another winner with this series. Humans had abused shifters and shifters rebelled but now with the tables turned, the shifters are no better than the humans were. It is very intriguing as now shifters control everything and rather harshly. Testing positive means being forced to join a pack. Logan had more scruples than his pack but he had to be very careful. Cole did not want that life but had no choice. What happens next is amazing and makes for excellent reading. The plot is fantastic and the heroes are to die for. What more could you want in a book?
Excellent tale! I haven't had a nice, exciting read that kept me up most of the night in a while.
On the down side, though: I don't think I've ever seen so many misused apostrophes in one story. Toss in a few other grammatical booboos, and I'm wondering why this author doesn't believe in proofreaders, or perhaps just in English lessons. (I recommend Lynne Truss's Eats, Shoots & Leaves for an absolute hoot of a punctuation lesson.) Can't really complain that much; I can't tell a story to save myself, but grammar is my jam. I'll allow for some of the oddities of British writers, with their "he was stood" or "they were sat", making the character or characters involved sound like chess pieces being moved about. This author uses this a lot, as do a number of other British authors; it bothers me, but I'm able to write it off as a quirk. Misusing apostrophes, failing to match subject to predicate, and other similar mangling of the English language, on the other hand, will get my urge to red-pencil all over the pages of a book going in full swing. Yes. I am a pedant. I will dock stars, even on a lovely story, for improper grammar. For a less enjoyable book, there will be a one-star Did Not Finish.
I found this book to be enjoyable, though I wish that we got more of the attraction and buildup of the relationship between Logan and Cole. We were told that they fancied each other, but there wasn’t much real evidence of it until they were declaring their love for one another. I wasn’t abrupt, per se, but it did feel like there wasn’t enough of a foundation behind their words, at that point.
Also, this can’t be happening in a vacuum. How are shifters living in the rest of the world? Has this takeover of the government, and abuse of power, caused other nations to respond even more violently against shifters? Is the UK subject to sanctions of any kind? What happened to the Royal Family? Honestly, this may happen, but I find it hard to imagine that a vast amount of political, economic, and social pressure wouldn’t be imposed on the UK by the international community as a reaction to their new version of apartheid.
