Charles Soule is a #1 New York Times-bestselling novelist, comics author, screenwriter, musician, and lapsed attorney. He has written some of the most prominent stories of the last decade for Marvel, DC and Lucasfilm in addition to his own work, such as his comics Curse Words, Letter 44 and Undiscovered Country, and his original novels Light of the Jedi, The Endless Vessel, The Oracle Year and Anyone. He lives in New York.
This is the big, huge, world changing end. People die; the worlds are changed. Mysteries are solved. Questions are answered. I don't know that I buy all the resolutions, but I've had a good time with this series, so I'm giving it a generous 4 stars.
Curse Words has certainly had some ups and downs, this volume being no exception. But I will say I felt some sadness when the story ends knowing there will be no more.
The story here is quite fast paced which it needed to resolve some long standing questions, however some of the ‘reveals’ Required me to re read pages 5+ times and still be confused as to what the heck is going on.
I wasn’t very happy at the ending, but perhaps more in the sense of it’s not what I wanted to happen, rather than it’s not what SHOULD happen. As Wizord says in the end “This is ok, this is how it should be” - and he’s probably right.
I hope Charles Soule revisits this book, but something tells me it’s finished at 25 issues, which is a shame, but all things must come to and end (even if it’s far sooner than we’d like)
A great ending to a great series. I had a lot of fun with this series overall and it was a really great mix of humor and more serious moments. This one maybe skewed a bit more towards the serious size but that is to be expected with wrapping up all the various story lines. Team Margaret!
Review is for the remainder of the series (vols 2-5)
It picks up speed after a confusing and muddled start, dips badly in the middle, but roars to a ridiculous conclusion. Just don't think about the inexplicably circular plot to hard and enjoy the ride.
This volume offers a solid conclusion to what has consistently been a great comic. It’s so absurd and over the top and I loved every minute of it. 5 out of 5!
SHAZOOM! This volume wraps up the tale of Wizord and his escapades on Earth, the Hole World, and eleswehere.
It's nice to see a story that ends all square after a (presumably) planned 25 issues (plus the odd special), and while I'm sad to see the bearded bastard go I know that the creator is moving on to bigger/better/other things.
(A Margaret miniseries some time in the future wouldn't be the worst, though...)
It ends well. These have always been fun read. Nothing really amazing or original but always fun to read. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Almost dropped a tear during this one. 4 stars for the book and 4 more for the series.
When this opened with a Spring Special I thought I might have timed my reading poorly, but before long Wizord is powering up by draining the world's belief in Santa so no, perfect for Christmas 2020. The secret origin of Margaret, the final battle for the Hole World, the battle after that (poor Canada) - it's all here. And if the conclusion sacrifices some of the amorality that made the series so entertaining, it compensates by taking the usual level of weirdness to even more cosmic places.
Kudos to Soule and Browne! They stuck the landing and ended this series firing on all cylinders!
The loose ends are wrapped up, there are some truly epic moments (rendered in loving, colorful detail by Browne) and great dialogue by Soule. If you are interested in a complete series with a definite endpoint, and want hilarity and absurdity alongside characters that you can both hate and love (sometimes at the same time), Curse Words is definitely worth reading!
More like a 4.5, but I'm rounding up because overall this series exceeded my expectations. It's a super fun romp, but with a more cohesive plot than I expected.
I had a lot of fun with this final novel and thought the connection that was revealed between Sizzajee and the Wizord was spectacular. . It added so much more to reflecting back on their conflict from the first novel and the hole world dynamics. All of the magic and the way that it was portrayed in the artwork in this graphic novel continued to be fantastic, and something that drew me into the world. As always, I loved the flashbacks to the past, especially as it explained more of the Nine and how they interacted with each other, Ruby and Wizard's relationship, and Margaret's storyline. Favorite quotes:
I picked this up right before the pandemic hit and then just didn't read any comics for over a year as part of some kind of routine shake-up I guess. So once I got vaccinated, I was clear to dive back in!(?)
The ending-ending was more of a fizzle than a "ZORP!" or what have you, but true to form this book was on the whole very fun. Ryan Browne is on point as always. There's a single joke pretty early on that justifies the cost of the book alone as far as I'm concerned. All in all it was a very enjoyable series to read, and this last trade was good enough that I went out and bought a bunch more comics for the first time in 14 months, so there's your endorsement.
A good ending to match an exceptional story is a harder thing to write than one might think. This was big and exciting and fun but I was left with so many questions, despite the huge chunk of exposition detailing Margaret's backstory. It kinda felt like they crammed a bit too much into those last issues. Nevertheless, I read the entire series in one night, so I enjoyed it very much!
Content warnings: Adult content, language, explicit sexual content, death in the family, thematic violence
The art and humor really delivers in this series and this final chapter is no exception. The creators played to their strengths and it absolutely shows on each page. I would not hesitate to revisit the world or Curse Words.
