4.5, so I’ll round up. While Haven and Fated weren’t as exciting as the previous two, Jordan’s book had the same action, drama, and suspense that we have come to know and love from Karen Lynch.
Plot:
Jordan, who always refused to be tied down, accidentally becomes mated to someone she can’t stand. To make matters worse, the two are forced to work side by side to prevent a demon invasion from destroying the world.
Characters:
One of the things that I always loved about Sara was that she was a strong, kind, and caring heroine, but she didn’t have to resort to snarkiness or sarcasm. Jordan, on the other hand, uses sarcasm (and often sex) as a way of communicating. It can be kind of abrasive at times, but Hellion showed us a deeper, much more vulnerable side to Jordan that kept her from being too over the top. I had totally forgotten about Jordan’s new mate, so it was great to see how they interacted with each other. A few reviewers were bothered by the fact that he was controlling and critical, and yes, I would have problems with that in real life. But this is a completely different world (a fictional one to be fair), and he is technically charged with ensuring the safety of all warriors, so I think it’s understandable that he goes from critical to bossy to worried. I think, in the end, Jordan became a little more responsible like him, and he became a little more laid back like her.
The supporting characters just made the book even better. Sara and Nikolas are still my absolute favorites, and their part of the book was to die for. Plus, it was nice to see so many people from the previous books. Side note: I would really like to read about Tristan. Hint, hint.
Writing:
I really like Lynch’s writing. Her books are also well-edited (very few typos compared to most of the YA fiction these days). I’m an English major, so that is always a joy for me. Readers should note that there is a lot of cursing and a little bit of violence. Jordan’s book is a little more risqué than most of the series, but it is Jordan’s book, so I would expect that. There is one scene that bothered me. You will know it when you read it, so I won’t spoil it. I think Lynch could have come up with something better to and achieved the same result.
The Bottom Line:
This is one of my favorite series; in fact, I just recommended it my daughter. If you love Jordan, you’ll probably love this book. Hellion goes back to the things that made the previous books so exciting. And if you love Sara and Nikolas, you will adore the end. I can’t wait to see what’s next!
