You know the old saying... If you can't beat 'em, taunt 'em until they mess up because they want to tear your bleeping head off so bad they can't see straight.
Or something like that.
Our planet got sucker-punched by the undead and their leader, Set. There's not much to laugh about. But don't tell Kane and Rebel that. The duo is back in fine form, globetrotting a desolate planet to try and bring it back to life with magic, Glocks and snark. Sure, their battles with the vampires have gone well, so far. But how long can that last? Kane's memories keep slipping away. Rebel's past comes back to haunt her. And the gods are just enjoying the show, waiting for their chance to strike. Which gods? Well, all of them...

Ben's storytelling adventures started as a Production Assistant on the set of the film, A River Runs Throught It. After forgetting to bring the crew's walkie talkies, losing Robert Redford's jacket and asking Brad Pitt if he was related to Paul Newman (in front of Paul Newman) he decided that film production didn't "speak" to him. Since no one else on the set would speak to him either he knew he needed to find work that required minimal human contact.
Writing. That did the trick.
His three series, Shirley Link, The Camelot Kids and Relics appeal to young and old alike. Emily Neuburger of Parents.com says, "[Shirley Link] is an amazing series!" and Julie Ann Grasso (author of the Adventure of Caramel Cardamom books) says The Camelot Kids will "leave you clutching onto your Kindle." Stephen King says, "I'm not providing blurbs at this time," but Ben is chipping away at King's resolve.

Kane and rebel are back! From the beginning of this book, you are thrust back into an action packed search for a new relic. Expect fighting scenes so well described, you can imagine it in your head. Lots of laughs from the banter between the awesome main characters. Meet lots of new characters which will have you belly laughing until its sore. Ben Zackheim brings you a whole new level to the kane and rebel series. You would be mad not to read it.
What's a little Armageddon between friends? Where do you target when the entire planet is a mess? Where do you go when your latest relic quest comes up a dud? Kane & Rebel try to follow the clues for the next piece of assistance to turn back the tide of the world's end, running concurrent with a sort of side quest. This is made problematic with their growing tension, baddies at every turn, Kane's powers doing strange things, being whisked away elsewhere against their will, some supposedly impossible thievery, and Kane's fading memory. Allies are scarce &/or untrustworthy, everything is going wrong, and the only constant is their continued survival. But how long can that last? It all leads to an extremely unexpected ending. One hell of a great read.
This is my first time reading anything in this series or from this author. I know that’s strange—to start a series with the latest installment rather than the first. But that’s also how I went into the 2004 reboot of Doctor Who. It works for me!
So, anyway, I thought I’d check out book 7. See how I like Zackheim’s writing. This unorthodox method gives me a glimpse at how well an author writes and builds a story and all that jazz.
Did not disappoint.
I’m glad to report that little fact, and add that I might have a crush on both Kane and Rebel. At first I thought I’d just get massively jealous of Rebel (that happens—strange, I know), but then I ended up finding their dynamic absolutely awesome. And adorable. And something . . .
Book 7 references loads of stuff that happened in previous books, as you would expect, but it was fine for me. It might bother some readers who start in middle (or end) of a series, but this is a series, so not a huge surprise. That’s on me . . . I still grasped the overarching story and really got a kick out of the characters, especially (eventually) being in Kane’s head throughout.
Sometimes being locked into the POV of SOME guys (you know who you are) as a female just isn’t ideal. But Kane kicks ass. He’s tough and funny and never gross or offensive despite the banter and humor, which can be bawdy. He respects the strengths of the women he’s around but manages to also muster up some kind of chivalry. I don’t know what I mean, exactly, but the author obviously does and he’s doing it fabulously (don’t stop).
Rebel does her own thing, but she’s more than just a sidekick or a foil for Kane or a hot piece decorating his arm. She’s interesting and entertaining and she holds her own against the bad guys. Right here right now, I’m thinking of them like a very balanced duo, a yin-yang (oh yes I did) and I have no idea where this is going, because I don’t have the previous 6 books directing me, but eventually they’ve got to get together, right?
If not, I’m fine with that. The truth is, Kane should be alone forever, because all his female fans want him for their own. I’m obviously not talking about myself, because I know the difference between a book character and real life, and besides, I’m still saving myself for Darcy or Rochester (i.e. I also like the silent, brooding type). Basically, whatever Zackheim chooses, I’m on board with, as long as it’s continuing the series for at least eight more books.
Seems only fair that I mention that at some point during my reading, I started highlighting places that made me laugh out loud because it was happening so often. Some of the verbal repartee is almost too good. The pacing of the story was excellent and the build to the final ten percent of the book was satisfying and the ending was fairly epic, a real gut-wrenching WTF (can I say that here?)!
Great series and an amazing book. The story just keeps getting better and better. What a fantastic world the author has created. Characters evolve. Dark and twisty. Secrets lies and surprises.
The dynamic duo are back! Kane and Rebel are doing everything they can to win the world back for humanity. As always things go sideways fast as allies become traitors, the whims of gods turn against them, and the 2 powers Kane has always counted on slowly deteriorate. Add to that, more and more of Kane’s memories are slipping away as he struggles to find out who he really is. Losing a memory or two might not sound so bad—unless you forget who your friends and are...and then, that loss can prove deadly. Can our favorite duo come out if this in tact? Grab a copy and find out!!
This book will knock your socks off! It's very exciting and addicting!
Holy moly Batman, this book is amazing! It's addicting and very compelling. Relic Mask continues the story of partners, Kane and Rebel. I love the fact that these two characters continue to evolve and grow stronger and always entertain. I devoured this book! There are many twists and turns and quite a few surprises. This series is awesome! This whole series is like potato chips, you can't read just one...you have to devour them all. Relic Mask is the best one to date!
Another fantastic read from Ben Zackheim. Kane is on a rollercoaster of a ride, trying to contend with all the normal hurdles that come his way, but this time he's got a bigger problem to contend with. Kane is slowly losing his memory and along with that he is losing control of his swap portal and his vault portal has been looted. Read today to find out the answers as to who and why, but beware of the cliffhanger it's a doozy that you wont see coming.
Another great book that once started, you have to finish in one sitting!I couldn’t stop laughing at the dialogue and then cursing Ben for the diabolical twists in the plot.....this series just gets better and better....if you love the books of Orlando Sanchez,John P Logsdon and Shayne Silvers, you’ll love this series....snarky and so entertaining... can’t wait for the next one!
The end of the world? Not if Rebel and Kane have anything to do with it! But Kane is contending with more than just Set and his cohorts. A real page -turner of a story.
Make time to read the whole book, because once you pick it up you will not want to put it down. Rebel and Kane are at it again in a story that starts fast and keeps going strong to the end.
