July 10, 2020There's an inconsistent sweetness here, in a story about a kid dealing with anxiety by turning into animals. And there are some great moments. But mostly, I am disappointed.
The reason for my disappointment is the strangely aggressive narrator. The narration really got in the way for me, to the point where I sometimes questioned whether I should be reading this to my kid. I understand there's a certain joking British male comedy voice that many people apparently find hilarious, but to me it felt more like a book that refused to take itself seriously and was constantly negging me and my kid. I'm sure others will disagree, and I hope they have a much better experience. This one felt like it had a ton of potential but got lost in a thousand unnecessary little barbs that were supposed to be funny.

O Charlie tem um problema: está a transformar-se em animais nos momentos mais inconvenientes de sempre! (como se houvesse momentos convenientes para uma pessoa se transformar em animal, não é?) E se isso lhe acontece no dia da peça de teatro em que tem de se apresentar perante toda a escola como Batata Triste 1?!
Um livro cheio de humor, que me fez dar umas boas gargalhadas (sabiam que as aranhas têm oito rabos? Pois ficam a saber!) e que me deixa muito contente por os autores de livros juvenis estarem a escrever livros para explicarem o que é a ansiedade e de que forma podemos lutar contra ela!
Num mundo em que a ansiedade atinge cada vez mais pessoas, é de louvar a existência de livros como este que, com muito humor e non-sense, explicam o que é, o que provoca e como podemos tentar dar a volta às situações ;)

Gloriously silly, gleefully naughty and totally entertaining. So good, in fact, that I HAD to finish it once my son was asleep! Sam Copeland is clearly mad, just like all the best ones - even the author biography is pure comedy. Sarah Horne’s quirky illustrations are the perfect match in this wonderful book for young readers.

Ik heb dit boek reeds mogen lezen voor de Hebbanbuzz. Het boek verschijnt op 7/02/2019 in het Nederlands in de boekhandels.
Ik las dit boek samen met mijn zevenjarige zoon. Al onmiddellijk werd er met grapjes gegooid. En ze waren nog grappig ook! Zelfs voor mij, toch wel een vijfentwintig jaar ouder dan de doelgroep..
Ook mijn zoon vond het een leuk boek en hij ging stiekem al vooruit kijken naar de tekeningen om te zien wat er nog stond te gebeuren. We lazen het boek samen omdat het toch best een dik boek was voor een zevenjarige en ik de grapjes soms nog moest uitleggen. Maar het is vast en zeker een aanrader voor pakweg 8-9-jarigen
Het hilarische verhaal van Kasper, die te pas en te onpas (eigenlijk altijd te onpas) in een die verandert en samen met zijn vrienden plannen bedenkt om toch maar gewoon zichzelf te kunnen zijn. Want Kasper moet binnenkort optreden in een musical en wil zeker niet voor aap staan als hij TIJDENS dat optreden in een dier zou veranderen.
Én er zit zelfs een serieuzere boodschap achter. Daarvoor moet je dan wel heel het boek lezen.
Weetje: wist jij dat spinnen 8 paar billen hebben? Nee? Dan moet je toch wel eens dit boek lezen want het staat vol met wetenschappelijke dingen die echt waar zijn. Of misschien toch niet? Of misschien toch wel. Wie zal het zeggen.

3.5 really. This is a great book for middle grade kids to open up a discussion about anxiety and how to handle difficult situations. It was the right length for the target audience, great illustrations, and it captured my kids imagination.
There are a couple of reasons I couldn’t go higher than 3.5.
The first is there was a lot of repetition. I know this is a book for MG kids, that’s who I was reading it to, but reading it aloud I picked up loads of repetition of words (not just bum and poo) which could have been changed for other, just as uncomplicated words. Just because it’s for kids doesn’t mean we can’t vary our language.
The second is (SPOILER ALERT) Charlie doesn’t actually turn into a chicken. My kids wanted me to read because they were so excited to find out when Charlie actually turned into one that when he didn’t, they were disappointed. And they weren’t impressed by the “letter” at the end by the publishing company apologising for the lack of chickens. My kids reaction to the ending (but why call it that if he never turns into a chicken?) over shadowed the message. It’s a silly thing really, but I can only report the impact it had on the target audience.

Jos pylly, pieru, kakka ja pissa jaksavat huvittaa, tämä kirja on sinulle. Toisaalta omassa sarjassaan tää oli yllättävän sujuvaa luettavaa. Pohjavire oli harvinaisen vakava, mikä tuli kaiken sekoilun keskellä tarpeeseen.

In Charlie Changes Into a Chicken we follow Charlie's day to day as he changes into animals. We have his loyal group of friends coming together and trying to understand why is this happening and what can they do to prevent Charlie from changing into animals in this not-so-marvel way.
It's a fun narrative exploring stress and anxiety.
Illustrations by Sarah Horne are an absolute delight and I enjoyed this read from the first chapter.
Witty, silly, fun - Charlie Changes Into a Chicken can be read by kids, adults and all in the between. I for sure want to read it to my little sister.

Sam Copelandin esikoiskirja Sami muuttuu kanaksi asettuu kuivanhumoristisen ja nonsensella ilottelevan brittiläisen lastenkirjallisuuden perinteeseen heti Andy Stantonin ja David Walliamsin väliin: Walliamsin tavoin mukana on myös vakavampia teemoja, mutta usein pitkälle polveilevat metavitsit lähestyvät Herra Gummi -kirjoja. Parhaiten kirja sopii hiekkalaatikkotason pierukakkahuumoria arvostaville tokaluokkalaisille, mutta toimii myös erinomaisesti pienemmille ääneen luettavaksi ja isommille 3-4 -luokkalaisille tirskuttavaksi.
Päähenkilö Sami muuttuilee satunnaisesti eläimiksi (ei kuitenkaan kertaakaan kanaksi, niin kuin otsikossa sanotaan; tämäkin on yksi kirjan kieroutuneista metavitseistä). Samin veli on sairaalassa, vanhemmat hermostuneita ja tulossa on tärkeä koulunäytelmä, jossa Samin pitäisi esittää tärkeä rooli Surullinen Peruna Numero 1. Mitä jos hän muuttuu joksikin noloksi eläimeksi kesken esityksen kaikkien nähden? Jotenkin outo kyky pitäisi saada hallintaan.
Parhaiten Copelandin humoristisesta kertojanäänestä saa käsityksen lukemalla tekstikatkelman:

Waar kom je een boek tegen waarin de hoofdpersoon het in zijn hoofd haalt om een paar bladzijden na het begin, het verhaal opnieuw te vertellen? De lezer moet dan gewoon net doen alsof hij of zij het eerste stuk niet gelezen heeft. Ik vond het hilarisch en dat was nog maar het begin!
Deze Kasper Verhoeven is inderdaad uniek te noemen.
Kasper maakt zich erg druk om de gezondheid van zijn oudere broer, SuperMove. Zo heet hij natuurlijk niet, maar zo noemen we hem in de rest van deze recensie. SuperMove ligt al een hele tijd in het ziekenhuis en de uitslag van een bepaalde scan is heel erg belangrijk! Kasper mist hem enorm en is bang voor wat er misschien gaat gebeuren.
De auteur heeft een actueel thema heel knap onder de aandacht gebracht.
Op deze manier kunnen we het boek lezen, over het probleem praten en toch lachen. Maar ondertussen is de storing wel ter sprake gebracht; iets dat misschien anders niet zo snel zou gebeuren. Ook de reden waarom iemand zich eenzaam kan gaan voelen wordt prachtig verwoord in dit verhaal. Zowel kinderen, ouders, grootouders en andere mensen kunnen hier hun voordeel mee doen.
Wat enorm goed gedaan is: regelmatig zie je een voetnoot, waarna onder aan de bladzijde op een komische toon een verklaring volgt. Deze verklaringen zorgen er wel voor dat het wat langer duurt voordat het boek helemaal uitgelezen is, maar dat maakt niet uit want je hebt weer een heleboel opgestoken en kunnen gniffelen van plezier!

What an amazing book.ok I know it's aimed at children and I know my grandchildren will love it but it is a great read even for us mature people. Beautifully written and illustrated.

Charlie Changes Into A Chicken is the hilarious, calamitous story of a week in the life of a schoolboy and his close friends. School is hard at the best of times, but it's even tougher when your big brother is very ill, the school play looms, your arch enemy has your downfall in his sights, and you've suddenly, inexplicably, uncontrollably, started changing into random animals…
Sam Copeland packs in the sniggers at a fearsome pace, and clearly has a keen tickle finger on the funny bone of his audience, who will absolutely will adore the copious bum and poo jokes. There's wonderful asides where the author talks directly to the reader, and that sense that Copeland creates that it's the reader and him 'in it together' makes the slightly more serious undertone of this book all the more poignant.
You see, between the butt-ropes and amorous French pigeons (can the amorous French pigeons get their own book, please?), the rhino manure and the sad potatoes, there is a message about how to survive your biggest worries. There's genuine coping strategies that anxious children can use, and messages about the benefits of smart, supportive friends who'll have your back when you're in the thick of it, and even the wisdom that those who are mean are usually terribly unhappy people underneath their bravado.
Any child is going to roar with laughter reading this, but it's going to be a particularly good choice for the fact that - given the increasing stress and pressure young people face through school, social media, and the world at large - this funny book doubles as a tool to help them handle those pressures with increased confidence. This book is an absolute winner.

איזה ספר מקסים!
צ'רלי מגלה יום אחד שהוא יכול להפוך לכל מיני חיות, אבל הבעיה העיקרית שלו זה שהוא לא ממש שולט בזה.
החברה הכי טובה שלו עוזרת לו להבין (בסדרה של ניסויים "מדעיים" מקוריים מאוד) שזה קורה לו כשהוא מודאג.
ולצ'רלי יש המון סיבות להיות מודאג.
ספר קורע מצחוק (הרבה בדיחות פיפי קקי, ופלוצים, אבל זה באמת מצחיק ואם אתם לא חושבים שפלוץ של עכביש הוא לא מצחיק, אז לפי דעתי הבעיה היא אצלכם), שנוגע במשהו שקשה מאוד לדבר עליו, מה עושים עם התקף חרדה.
מומלץ בחום לגילאי 8 ומעלה.

Vähän päälleliimatun hauska juttu, joka olisi toiminut paljon vähemmälläkin alaviittaamisella ja itsetehostuksella. Itse tarina oli kiva, Pieni poika joka yritti yksin selvitä vähän liian suurien tunteiden kanssa (syöpää sairastava isoveli yms.) mutta jonka kaverit "auttoivat" vaikeitten aikojen yli. Tekstin sisäinen vitsailu ja selittämisen selittäminen teki kirjasta paikottain sekavan, jopa hankalalukuisen. Ei siis ihan heikolla lukutaidolla varustetulle.

Huumoritutkani ei juurikaan värähtänyt Sami muuttuu kanaksi -kirjan kohdalla. Ehkä minulla ei juuri nyt ollut kaistaa kuivakalle brittihuumorille. Sen verran lupsakka kuitenkin, että luin loppuun.

DIT IS GENIAAL GRAPPIG EN GEWELDIG
Oh, zo zo zó heerlijk dit soort kinderboeken. Daarom zou iedereen kinderboeken moeten lezen. Je kúnt niet anders dan hier dolgelukkig van worden. HET IS ZO GRAPPIG!!!
Met dank aan het niet-aflatende enthousiasme van Evelyn voor deze serie dat ik hem oppakte en nu ben ik net zo betoverd met de geniale humor. Deel 2 en 3 zullen zeer binnenkort ook verslonden worden ;)

Det var länge sedan jag skrattade så mycket åt en bok. Jag älskar sättet den är skriven på och kommer tvinga alla mina små kusinbarn att läsa den. SÅ KUL!

When I first picked up Charlie Changes Into A Chicken I had a quick flick through but half an hour later I was fifty pages through the book, I couldn't put it down! I may not have been the intended audience as I am not a child but the story was so brilliantly written and so funny that I couldn't help but read it and see what happened to Charlie. The book follows a young boy called Charlie who keeps changing into animals and he can't quite work out why until his friends try to help him to deal with it. I loved this book for so many reasons! Firstly Sam's writing style is so brilliant, it is told as if he's personally telling you the story which is a really lovely way for it to be read as it's a friendly approach to the story for children and really engaging to read. The book is also full of fun and different additions to the writing throughout like the footnotes which are used to share a funny fact or extend a joke or the Q and As with 'real' people which take you out of the story for a moment and give a bit of fun perspective on what's going on. The way it tackles explaining anxiety to children through the book is incredible, it is very rarely named as Charlie being anxious but more described with the feelings and effects Charlie is experiencing which I think is so much more understandable for children and by doing it in this way it's not forced upon the children, it just allows them to work it out in their own time. The hilarious way the story is told is a great way to keep it engaging for children in a way that they mightn't even notice the important lessons they are learning from Charlie's troubles of becoming anxious. The characters in this book are brilliant and so well thought through, as a whole it's nice to see that Charlie has a diverse range of friends and they all have brilliant but different personalities. My favourite was Flora as she is someone Charlie can always rely on and even if she did get some things wrong she never gave up in helping her friend. Charlie himself as a character is fantastic and so relatable for children and it's great how we get to know the full story of hows he's feeling the way he is and his thoughts before and after each time he changes. Although the fact Charlie changes into animals sounds very silly and unrealistic, the way the book is written and how we know this is because he has become anxious it doesn't seem unrealistic at all and it comes across as a very real story and a problem that you could actually have which I guess is all down to the brilliant way the book is written. There are frequently funny and entertaining black and white illustrations throughout the book of varying sizes and they really help show what is happening in the story and give a visual representation of how Charlie is feeling. Some of the best illustrations and ones I'm sure children will love the most are the ones relating to toilet humour! I don't have a bad thing to say about this book, it's incredible and one I think all children should read. Such a fantastic way to help children learn a bit more about anxiety without it feeling forced on them and in a hilarious book I'm sure they'd love to read. I can't wait for the next book to come out!

Nappasin kirjan sattumalta mukaan ja se oli yllättävän mukavaa luettavaa. Kirjailija on taitava ja onnistuu käyttämään tällaista "minä selitän tarinaa sinulle juuri nyt" -kirjoitustyyliä kymmenien alaviitteiden kanssa erittäin hyvin. Monet yrittävät tätä tyyliä käyttää, mutta tavallisesti vain sotkevat kertomistyylinsä. Copeland taas onnistuu tässä hyvin.
Kirja on lämminhenkinen ja helposti luettava, tietyllä tavalla jopa sarjakuvamainen. Siitä tulee monella tavalla mieleen Roald Dahlin kirjat ilman ilkeyttä tai "väärin" meneviä moraalisia asioita. Kirjan taustalla olevat vakavammat aiheet tekevät kirjasta tietyllä tavalla myös opettavaisen. Kuvitus on hyvää ja sopii kirjaan erinomaisesti.

Read this to my year 3/4 class and it was a huge success. Children who often don’t enthuse about books went home and looked online to see when the next one would be out - alas not till August, but there’ll be a queue come September! It was hilarious - for me as well as them, which is not always the case. It reads aloud brilliantly, has lots of excitement and suspense, and also manages to raise important issues about family, friendship and fears in a thought-provoking way. The plot is zany, as the title suggests, but its appeal was universal, in my class at least. Two copies are now doing the rounds, and are borrowed as soon as they are returned. Looking forward to the next one!

Absolutely loved this book! Full of laugh out loud moments and those lump in the throat ones that both leave the reader with tears in their eyes. Deals with a hugely important issue of a child's anxiety and worry in such a gloriously positive and upbeat manner . From the hilarious footnotes,to the chatty narrating style,to the fabulous foursome that Charlie and his friends make (not forgetting the flirty French pigeons and a HUGE amount of poo) this book captured my heart and was a joy to read!

I’d heard a lot of talk about this book and how funny it was but also how it was a great representation of what it’s like to have anxiety. I’m sometimes a bit wary of hype but I’m particularly interested in children’s books that deal with mental health or emotional wellbeing so I decided that this was a book that I really needed to read, I’m so glad that I did.
First of all, the book is genuinely laugh out loud funny. I often inwardly smile at books but it takes a lot to make me guffaw and properly laugh at a book. Copeland’s writing is so funny. I think good funny footnotes are really hard to do and he really managed it! The illustrations by Sarah Horne capture the characters perfectly. Her illustration of Charlie as a spider was so perfect I tried to highlight it on my kindle in the same way that I collect my favourite sentences.
As an anxiety sufferer, I really identified with Charlie’s problem. I mean, I’ve never turned into an animal but I have had debilitating panic attacks. I loved how the book highlights ways to help stave off panic attacks or slow them down.
I can’t wait to read more about Charlie and his friends!

Superleuk boekje. Heel knap beschreven. Vriendschap die op de proef wordt gesteld. Kunnen de vrienden Kasper geloven als ze het niet met hun eigen ogen hebben gezien? Want Kasper verandert als hij stress heeft in een dier. Welk dier dat weet hij niet, want dit is elke keer opnieuw een verrassing. Alleen niemand heeft het ooit gezien ... of toch ... net die jongen die Kasper altijd pest is er getuige van dat Kasper uit de lucht viel, toen hij een duif was ...
Tussen de hoofdstukken in heeft Kasper ook veel stress voor zijn broer die hij Supermove noemt. Die ligt in het ziekenhuis en wacht op de grote scan om te zien of hij genezen is ... oh ja nog een stressfactor is het schooltoneel. Zal Kasper dan ook veranderen?

My class LOVE this book. It took twice as long to read as it should have, because both I and they could not stop laughing. It touches on important topics (illness, anxiety) in an authentic, non-patronising way, making it a good book to start discussions with children. However, the number one reason you should buy this book is because it’s just too funny. Plus Sarah Horne’s illustrations are a delight and only add to the laughs!

Copeland osaa riemastuttavasti kuvata kolmasluokkalaisen elämää sekä ennen kaikkea elämää eläinten nahoissa. Kissa Mao hämähäkin kimpussa - hulvaton jännitysnäytelmä. Entäs kun ei ole muuta vaihtoehtoa kuin pissata rehtorin kukkaruukkuun? Suomeksi kolahti paremmin kuin englanniksi. Velmu kuvitus. Lopussa synkähköjä lupaava koukku seuraavaan osaan. Suomennos toimii, asialla loistava Harry Potterin kääntäjä.

Hullunhauskalla huumorilla höystetty tarina Samista, joka muuttuu milloin miksikin eläimeksi aina silloin, kun hän on kovasti huolissaan jostakin asiasta.
Kirjailijan tapa kommentoida joka välissä milloin mitäkin asiaa teki tästä todella omalaatuisen teoksen. Omanlaisensa erikoisuus oli myös runsas alaviitteiden käyttö, joiden toimivuudesta en ole täysin vakuuttunut. Muuten aivan loistava huumoripläjäys, joka uppoaa takuulla varhaisnuoriin lukijoihin. (Huom. Pieru- ja kakkahuumorivaroitus!)

Reason 1 is that it was so hilarious. Charlie turns into a snake and goes into a vent. Then he goes into the girl’s bathroom and went down the toilet.
Reason 2 is that he had good friends. Flora helped Charlie control his power a little bit. She also saved Charlie at the end.
This was the best and funniest book on the planet!
