JUSTIN SLOAN wrote video games before becoming a full-time author, with credits on such games as Game of Thrones, Tales from the Borderlands, Walking Dead, and Marvel and mobile games. Now you can find his military science fiction and space superheroes books on Amazon, KU, and Audible.com. He taught Muay Thai kickboxing and Marine Corps Martial Arts, and can play three songs on the bagpipes. Justin holds advanced degrees in international relations/economics and creative writing. Oh, and he acted in movies for a bit - all small roles though.
This is a political propaganda piece, rather than a book series. Starring a female child soldier, this is a horrible series. Had an effort to write a novel been made, this might have been an interesting story. It wasn't and it wasn't.
Before going further, please read my review of either "Dark Horse" a good first contact story by Diener or Powers of the Earth (a ridiculous story) and comments from a Claes Rees, Jr/cgr710 (a self-identified NeoNazi). Claes Rees, Jr. claims he represents all american patriotic racists and who am I to dispute the claim.

To the book. The story lacks world building. I do not mean that it is insufficient or poorly presented. It does not exist. You are plopped down into a weird combat scene with no context and unconvincing characters. The background universe became more vague as the chapters proceeded.
The characters were not translucent but it might have been better if they were. Cardboard cutouts are opaque but usually not very lifelike. That describes the cast of characters fairly well. The interactions are as realistic as you might expect, given the above. The first character who is identified as a major player (for reasons unknown, at least by the time that I put the book down) has less personality than most background characters in anime. I had no connection to her and could hardly have cared less about her fate by the point, where it is stated that she is so very important.
What was disturbing to me about the main character (?) was that she is sixteen. I am not a big fan of child soldiers in military fiction. Stories that rely on that gimmick are horribly written teen adventures in space or something else (?). War is neither fun nor cool. It is interesting, it should be studied (or portrayed in fiction) but it is not Cool. Was this written for teenage boys? The only thing I knew about her was that she was a sixteen year old, blond (bombshell ?), with a severe sexual fixation on a mid twenty year old and that she is a sharpshooter with mental or possibly magical powers.
The other mysterious character is some energy being who is collecting a super squad to save the universe. Again I wonder if this is supposed to be a teen adventure. With the tired super squad theme, no world building and empty characters the book reads like a computer first person shooter. HALO is an example of that same type of storytelling. All the books written about and for most science fiction film and games are all attempts to backfill their sad universes. Examples are Star Wars, Star Trek and all console games.
Lastly, the dialogue fills the empty story space with profanity. Profanity indicates toughness. These super candidates are soldiers. All tough beings can only communicate by profanity. Obviously then all their conversations will be profanity laden. It's very logical.
It is the worst and most shallow scaffolding for character interaction possible. Implausible interactions, characters lacking convincing emotions, a world lacking context and many explosions. That is a summary for all low effort science fiction that I have attempted in the last few years.
Some may find it entertaining but I did not.
Books like these are what moved me to watching science fiction rather than reading it. Netflix has the biggest collection of film and TV, so I was not surprised that it has such a large selection of science fiction. All the other services seem to offer some science fiction and the films are generally much better written than their distant print cousins.
I stumbled upon Curiosity Stream/Nebula because of educational channels on YouTube. Their collection of documentaries is growing monthly and only cost $15 USD for a yearly subscription. Not a bad price, if you like that kind of content. After my experiences with Amazon/Goodreads, I began to use YouTube for my bibliophilic needs, as well as videos about my current and new interests. The communities of readers are so much more thoughtful and sophisticated than Goodreads. Some of my favorite channels are.

Amazing, realistic characters you come to know & love. Action across our universe & beyond. Battles with an array of enemies with a huge variety of weapons & skills. Fun reading about how Sam, the main character on the side of truth & justice grows & develops. A great read.
This was a really really long set of books. I think it was way deeper than I like to read but if you like this type of book I highly recommend reading this set.
From the synopsis of this boxed set, I was really excited to read it. The premise sounded interesting and the worldbuilding had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, the actual execution left a lot to be desired. The exposition was clumsy, the protagonist just kind of suddenly stumbles into this elite task force without any fanfare or setup and payoff, and the story felt like it was off and running without ever getting its legs under it. The author does know how to write a great action sequence, but it read a lot like a typical action movie... the scenes and moments between the action sequences left a lot to be desired.
This was an enjoyable romp through a well-developed storyline, we watch Sam, a young girl grow into a woman and become a Warrior without equal. Along the way she falls in love with an alien that's neither man nor woman, or perhaps both, and Masters the greatest powers in the universe. At the end of the fourth book I found myself still wanting to know what happened next, which is perhaps the best recommendation one can give.

Action packed with battles, bad guys and heroes. A great storyline that flows from one amazing scene to another. A fantastic adventure that I enjoyed reading and would recommend to all sci-fi action fans.😀
A wonderful story weaves into some awesome sci-fi. I for one would love to see This adventure continue! Great storyteller weaving an amazing galaxy weaving adventure!!
I really enjoyed the characters, and the growth and development of them. It was cool reading the back story of Sam as she became the woman she was destined to be.
